I'd love to hear your general thoughts on the new gn! I personally think Wonderland was a little rushed, but I loved reunion tour.
was fun in some ways and fell short in others! i overall i agree with you on that as well. more specific thoughts, in no particular order:
some really really cool visuals in this book. lucretia in the hourglass at the start, some awesome panels with space and the hunger and stuff... barry regaining his memories on page 212 is probably my favorite page in the whole book
the choice to make the Chug & Squeeze be painting instead of pottery is baffling to me. the title of the place made sense with the original… the choice to change it so that it doesn't fit, and then also make fun of that, feels a bit like i am being made fun of as a fan/audience member, regardless of whatever the original intent was
(compounded with the total loss of the original depth in this scene… no vulnerability from taako, just a good 'ol fanservice kiss…)
similarly bizarre, the choice to make lucretia lose 30 years instead of 20...? 20 not bad enough? she needed to be 60 instead of 50? what's happening lol
i feel vindicated on a spiritual level for being the only person i can remember drawing mullet ponytail barry - like 95% of fanart i see draws him either short haired or with long hair free n out like in HTBG graphic novel... never ponytails. im winning
more bafflement with magnus even THINKING on the question of forgetting julia... the kalen thing is a much more interesting conflict to me given (a) it makes sense to be uncertain about and (b) relates directly back to his love for julia. and they established AND NAMED kalen in eleventh hour, why not use that...
feels like they swing back and forth on how much they trust the audience to pick up subtext... being hit over the head with magnus continuing the "id hate it shut the fuck up" thing to rly look at the camera and wink and tell us how much he loves julia, but then the comic version of the "love barry trust barry" was VERY dependent on picking up cues and seeing taako's attitude change
speaking of, i did really love the "love barry trust barry" scene. and both times lup jumps into barry's arms is so cute ugh
i know it's a product of how rushed everything has to be putting 10+ hours of audio into a singular COMIC book, but for fuck's sake, removing KEATS..........?????? so now lydia & edward have no depth??? & no parallel/foreshadowing for the way liches work??? OKAY???
mannequin magnus design and the way they enabled him to do expressions was preddy good. enjoyed it. also the whole possession + wonderland final fight action is cool and fun
while i am disappointed the bell is all fancy and weird instead of being a very plain and small thing as it was described in canon (which felt more in character for barry), i DO really really really like the flower on top... the wither-and-bloom motif... tasty
oh yeah griffin disappearing is such a great way to foreshadow a thing beyond planes coming down to consume... ahh i love playing with meta stuff
so so much good barry content man. so much. thank god we got so much good fun reunion tour stuff. hes so dumb as rocks i love him
actually pretty cool they more explicitly canonized the explanation for barry physically attacking davenport. also barry/lucretia interaction so so so so good
as cute as the original scene is with them planning and writing the note for magnus' body, i think the way they split the party in this version was smart
i dont need to contribute more to the pool on fan feelings on blue twins, BUT given there was no choice but to have her be blue, lup is very cute
taako falling to his knees instead of like pointing the staff at lucretia... :/ eh
given how much literally this entire series has suffered from being so scrunched up, i'm also not SUPER looking forward to stolen century and S&S being condensed into one book, but ohhhh wellllll
TL;DR i don't really read these books because i have a lot of faith in the way they Tell The Story, but it still had a lot of fun moments and scenes and visuals that got my heart! fun to see thorough visual takes on my fave podcast.

all jokes aside, i honestly do have way too many wishes when it comes to what i want to see from GMMTV and most of them are very hyperspecific, so instead of giving you just an endless list of whatever random ideas or pairings i’d like to get (which is maybe more appropriate for a bingo card or something like that), i kinda condensed it all into some more general categories (sort of. a couple fo these are still pretty specific ;;;;;;;;)
anyway, here we go!!!!
1. WOMEN. literally my top wish after anything jimmysea related is MORE. WOMEN. like srsly give me viewjune as the main pairing in a GL!!!!!!!! give me sizzy in any combination!!!!!!!! give me women centring shows where the women actually get treated as the main characters!!!!!!!! give me the GL version of series like only friends and we are where the women get to be silly and nasty!!!!!!!!! give me jamie kissing women as a treat to me specifically!!!!!!!!! GIVE. ME. WOMEN.
2. historical QL. after the success of i feel you linger in the air and with both idolfactory and domundi working on releasing historical QLs in the near future, i think it’s about time GMMTV also gives us a proper one. possibly with no time travel or reincarnation involved, for once
3. plot driven QL. this is kinda tied to my wish for an actual slow burn and partly to the following point as well, but i do desperately wish we could get a QL series where the romance is obviously still there, but it’s not the main focus of the show, or at least not the only one. something like manner of death or triage, where the romance just happens along the way as the story unfolds. i think the closest GMMTV got to it was with not me, but it would be nice to get more, even if i know this is not everyone’s cup of tea
4. some variety please for the love of god. look, i know we’re never gonna get rid of school settings and office romances, so it’s pointless to wish to have none of those, but i do desperately need a bit more diversity. of the fifteen series announced in part 1, seven of them are set in school. SEVEN. that’s basically half of the offer they’re giving. and okay, if we consider only the QL shows then the ratio is better (3 out of 9), but still. give me thriller shows, give me horror shows, give me fantasy shows, give me sci-fi shows, give me jobs that aren’t just office workers or chefs, give me mystery, give me crime, give me cashiers and doctors and detectives and firefighters and taxi drivers and teachers and librarians and waiters and bartenders and mechanics and lawyers and flight attendants and therapists and farmers and hairdressers and reporters, JUST!!!!!!!!! explore something new!!!!!!!! take some risks!!!!!!!! i know GMMTV as a company is not as big as we think it is and that it focuses on teens and new generation audiences, but i don’t think younger people want to see students and office workers exclusively……
5. QL exploring other sexualities and gender identities. just give me ace main characters, trans main characters, non-binary main characters, ALL THE DIFFERENT QUEER MAIN CHARACTERS!!!!!!!
6. pepper/papang/guy/podd in any combination as a main pairing in a QL. love and light to all the rookies but if GMMTV doesn’t give these men some main roles im gonna start committing grand scale larceny to cope

A familiar book on the shelf caught Riddle's eye and went to get it for Yuuna.

Despite the implication of choosing this book for them, Yuuna still smiled sweetly at Riddle.

Their hands brushed against one another as Riddle handed the book over to Yuuna. Even if they both wore gloves for their school uniforms, that fleeting touch caused a slight jolting sensation throughout Riddle.
On top of that incredibly kind smile on the prefect's face, Riddle felt emotions that felt very new. Was it embarrassment? Awkwardness? Whatever it was, it felt unbecoming of him. He tried to shake it off, but the feeling persisted.
As his cheeks started to turn warm. Riddle couldn't help but wonder if he was coming down with something, but deep down, he knew that wasn't the case.
🌹: Ahem. In any case, finish reading the book as soon as possible and don't delay it any further.

Finally figured out (part of) why Lev wanted to get me to play No Man's Sky and Reka (Baba Yaga apprentice game. It's a cute and funky indie game) despite the fact that I don't buy or play games lmfao
I was playing Reka... Weirdly had the thought "this feels like it's a new home". Odd because. I was not feeling at home in the game. Anyway. Yeah. Moving fucking house
There was an issue I was running up against irt the construction of ANVD where it exists outside of linear time. I tried for a few days there if piercing the veil of time so to speak which... the major issue was just I have not been taking care of myself lmfao and ignoring my own needs for ages now and my self pushes back against that, but.. I know theres a version of my house in a "future" (ANVD time) place... I couldn't get through the. what im just going to call the white veil. more so its the colour i associate with Grey, a really light, spring rain cloud grey, grey matter of the brain, but anyway. The time thing... I kept coming across the branching tree (metaphorical) holding periods of time like clumps of dirt between roots, and navigating it, or rather being put in front of it was a little... uh. it made existing pointless. i had no ties to any one time, I felt like entering one or the other(s) would just be an arbitrary choice to denounce most times in favour of one time and. yeah. no. I have shit to do wrt looking after myself, so Im stepping back from looking at the tree
I feel like ANVD where I live now is sort of. in-between the cracks of lived-in ANVD, which isn't a thing yet... I sort of live in this Void-mirroring - not Void-like - or more so Perceptual between-the-cracks.... I dont know how to put it in English. i live in a specific version of ANVD thats very much a thing, but its hollow and sterile as I have designed. I live I guess in a "part" of it that is within the snail shell, it is the snail. Point being that i attempt to keep myself away from whats coming, and like to keep it that way, hence why the Sky between the waters has in itself something that separates sky from sky and thats where i live. or. not? I dont get it, admittedly. I get it, but I've been chasing my own thoughts about this for months now lmfao
anyway. There was this sort of inference that the house should exist outside of time, or. look. I'll get to the point: A moving house is exactly what the fuck I've needed for so long now. It solves the problem of roaming, of moving through times, of being detached from the world, and so. In my mind it works like this: There's the house proper and the house that roams the world, sort of like the outside of the house exists in movement (probably a room of the house proper since the house is, as ive seen through time, becoming a fucking huge but neat fortress), pulled by mechanical animals. The house proper exists in this timeless spaceless sort of pocket in ANVD - probably existing like that with the windows leading out into ANVD. Im not entirely sure on it, because some part of me thinks i need to course-correct future me's decision to isolate the house from reality itself - but also. i dont. the black sea of RTG exists in ANVD and the house is within/across it which was planned, thanks very much past me, ugh. Ill figure it out.
Either way, it also solves the problem arising from Black and Red being absolutely nomadic by nature, and. i. look. my heart longs for nomadic life in a way i cannot describe. its Bliss, Ananda, it's blooming, it's my purpose, it's (etc emotions that are condensed to a mockery of their actual depths by putting them into words), so Im guessing this is just how it needs to be

ISHIZU & KAIBA
i think the moment she met him she went into older sister mode. not out of like, a need to baby him or whatever its actually the opposite he is so machiavellian and uppity and willing to escalate a situation that she was just like right yeah this is exactly how marik is. hes at that age, where boys like to blow up buildings in death matches.
for the aforementioned reason i think thats also why he gets to see a slightly more impish side to her she doesnt really share often. the banter is dry and fast she has said "skill issue" to him at least once and she absolutely does stunt on him whenever she manages to even slightly best him in anything. shes rambling about predynastic art and taking forever to get to her point on purpose. and when i think he and her are an absolute menace to joey like his va and her va did a duel once in character and she was murdering him verbally. at one point they were talking about the north american tournament and joey was like "yeah they wouldnt let me enter cuz my decks got banned cards in it" and shes like "joey if you entered even with your current deck you wouldnt win" and he was like "what? why do you say that? did your necklace tell you that?" and she said "no, I just used common sense." . i could feel her and kaiba high fiving on that one i saw it so clearly
also i really like how in battle city we see that like, especially after their duel and as the marik v yugi fight looms ever closer that she and kaiba genuinely talk strategy on the side. she and him are standing on opposite sides of the ring than yugis gang, like, given her whole thing you think shed be kicking it with them but now she and kaiba are gossiping and speculating and i think that shows that he genuinely respects her skill as a duelist even if he thought the fate stuff was bullshit. he knows her meta game was crazy real recognizes real.
theyre gonna have a really, really long talk after dsod.
MARIK & KAIBA
as above i think the two of them are very similar and i think that pisses them both off. they absolutely refuse to acknowledge it like if you said that theyd snort with derision and be like im nothing like him [insert snide remark here] but thats exactly what i mean. for that reason you cannot just leave them to their own devices together its going to get ugly, or if they have a mutual enemy, felonious. both of them designed Saw Games for yugi.
that being said i do think they should be on a podcast together to talk about like, duel monsters news and commentate on tournaments and stuff like the one-liners would be VICIOUSSSSSSSS . it would be like a frenemies situation i think.
he still feels. REALLY bad about the whole "maiming if not murdering" some of the medical staff on the battle city blimp and he has like, no idea how to broach that topic like if he should send a gift basket or apology text or what so like, hes pretty awkward around kaiba at least at first and is kinda just waiting for the day he brings it up. u said kaibas keeping that as an iou in his back pocket and i agree.
i think the ishtars sometimes hang out with (babysit) mokuba and whenever ishizu and rishid wont let him do something he goes to marik because marik 100% enables younger brother behavior . hes taken him on motorcycle rides. he probably showed him how to forge papers at some point. its really educational
MONOMA & KIRISHIMA
so like. ok hear me out. im about to grab manga panels you know this shit is about to be so for real serious. so like i talk a lot about the team up mission chapter where class a is nice to monoma and he freaks it but id like to bring up that kirishima is one of the main three actors of this plan, esp during the phase where they're trying to gather info on what monomas "secret message" is. deku asks monoma how hes feeling, and monomas like....im not fucking telling you that. so,
(condensed version for time and space). but the important part here is that while deku and Iida fail to engage Monoma in normal conversation because Monoma doesn't have normal conversations with Class A, when Kirishima is like "dude just fucking punch me" Monoma is vaguely confused but goes all in, despite the fact that fist fighting Kirishima is probably more of an immediate threat to his health and safety than talking about his feelings.
so what I'm getting at here is that like, I think Kirishima is fundamentally more capable of communicating with Monoma than maybe other members of Class A not despite the sourness between them but because of it. While Kirishima is kind enough at his core to do this because they think Monoma's in danger (and because they think figuring it out will make him...stop. the things he does.), he also has picked up on the fact that communication with Monoma, even well-meaning, has to be delivered in an antagonistic manner, because he has already done the back-and-forth bickering with Monoma that makes his world go round, unlike Iida and Midoriya.
So I think even though they dislike each other, ironically, Kirishima's better at getting a read on him than a lot of other people.
um. I'm just gonna keep going till it loosely approximates four ideas im in too deep. anyways. It's also important to remember that the remedial classes in the forest training camp were fucking LONG. They were four hours a night. That is.a LOT of acute Monoma exposure for the Class A flunkies late into the evening and we know from the light novels that during that time, he was getting up to mischief and frequently taking "restroom breaks" in which he went and cheated in games on behalf of his classmates who did not know he was doing this. but again anyway the point is that kirishima was. very early on introduced to and spent extended periods with monoma's particular brand of crazy and this would only be even more relevant if hes friends with tetsutetsu, who monoma is also fairly close with. i think thats kinda why we see a willingness for kirishima to get up in his personal space more:
which like, watch out kirishima you may be roped into the monoma handler crew. but like i think a lot about that and like, how kirishima actually tries to explain it to monoma even though as someone who has acute monoma toxicity poisoning he knows this is a very futile effort because kirishima is someone who, actively, is trying to be the manly guy he idolizes, but god, this motherfucker does make it really hard sometimes. most of the time. every time. he is trying to give him the benefit of the doubt because maybe one day it will be different but he does not have his hopes up and he does not know what is wrong with this dude.
which leads me into the next thing i think, sort of along the same lines as bakugou although not as much, monoma does both envy and admire kirishima for being one of the "strong". naturally he'd rather chew his own hands off than say it, but i also dont think he's picked up on the fact that kirishima is the way he is in a very deliberate manner, like that, he worked to be the person he is today and continues to do so. i think if he did know, monoma would respect him a lot more, because he really admires that kind of self-determination and deeply wishes he, too, could form that strong of a personal identity. again, he probably really wouldnt.... express it that well? like i think maybe monoma admiring your strong traits more is kind of a fast track to him being even more annoying because he is truly instinctively a little hater . but he doesnt actually dislike kirishima for any personal reason, like, he has no qualms with kirishima as a person-- he himself is good friends with tetsutetsu. it's solely the class a thing, and the fact that monoma cant really detangle those feelings of jealousy and admiration. he doesnt really care what kirishima thinks of him, but he does make more of an effort when he engages in his antagonism with kirishima, because hes feeling like "look, i want to stand on ground with you as an equal, i see you as strong enough to be worth putting the energy into this rivalry, youre so cool that i feel like im strong if i can keep up with you" except even he doesnt know this is what hes thinking and nobody really wants this. but i dont think he could even really bring himself to HATE hate kirishima or even match his pure dislike as an individual because monoma has no reason to. hes just an awful little man.
also monoma pesters him a lot because he really really likes his quirk. you should be honored kirishima , really. its really fun to him. naturally he does use it for mischief but even non mischief reasons he just thinks its neattttt hes probably got him some deku-style notes about it. its also probably why monoma would tag along on any training tetsutetsu invites him to do with kirishima around bc otherwise he would be like . why would i want to be sweaty and around those despicable clowns when i dont even have to be. <- knows he has no chance of winning a sparring match and is not even going to try

i love taylor swift since i was little, which is why it pains me to say this but the most recent albums (ttpd n midnights) feel like money grabs, like i wishe she would've take more time with it and think it through instead of just using phrases that are now popularized then putting it in a song
her album doesnt feel authentic to me anymore... some of the songs are kinda good. but (to me) after evermore she just stops caring about her craft.
although knowing that Taylor cares so much about sales (ex. her doing a lot of versions of one song with barely anything added to it) i mean get that bag girl! and it shouldn't be that surprising :/ since the beginning of her career (ex. she needs to always have no.1s and must get grammys each album/year or she'll be devastated n cry. overachiever things 😋 shes so me)

hiii dear, yea ty for sharing your opinions <3 i totally agree w you i wish she took more time with ttpd and maybe condensed it more so it wasn't...so long and i feel like some of the songs are just "filler" songs?? like she just came up w a bunch of random lyrics and was like, ok well i need to put these in a song, so she just cut copy pasted from her notes app and then jack antanoff put a beat behind it n they called it a day LOL. the only songs on ttpd i enjoyed were the ones that actually had a cohesive story that was being told (ex loml, but daddy i love him, the black dog, clara bow, peter, a few others i can't think of but most of them were in the second half). i saw someone say on tiktok that she needs to let her lyrics breathe a little bit, and i agree w that and also what you said ab using popularized phrases n stuff. like i wish she would just...write sometimes w/out having sort of weirdly cryptic ways of putting things? it's okay to have a simple lyric if it comes off the way you want it to? hahaha
as for whether or not it's a cashgrab, possibly. i mean i noticed this w midnights too, but her advertising team goes CRAZYY w repping her new albums so a lot of it does feel very manufactured. i still think her songwriting is genius and she's an amazing lyricist, but idk yeah i think it's just she needs to spend more time on her albums and she should be ok w trashing songs if they don't work LOOOL quality over quantity always imo in any EP release. also lowkey i think jackie boy gotta go...his production is soooo fucking boring to me idk. he has prod for a lot of amazing tswift classics n im grateful to him for that but i'm so tired of his production at this point. she needs some new. i don't feel the same of aaron dessner though. i will never get tired of aaron's tracks, he never fails her imo. but also yea haha she's def an overachiever

The more general version of this question is: how has optiministDuelist been involved in the writing of godfeels 3.1? (or even the future parts you're working on, if you can do so without spoilers)
The more specific version that makes this a question better suited towards you rather than shooting the question towards optimisticDuelist, and is rather a series of questions extrapolating on the first one is: why did you involve them? are they helping you write dirk or jake? are they providing input/advice? and that goes towards other people you've had help with the project too, if they're comfortable with being spoken about - i was just a fan of od's analyses and was surprised to see his name attached to godfeels! in fact im so curious about the nature/process of collaboration in godfeels it seems reductive to even try to condense it into questions that would be easier/faster to answer, in that i fear that what i put in will be what i get out, and that logically it's silly of me to bank on the fact that you might go more in depth than how these questions may imply on first glance. i fear my words make no sense and rather instill anxiety into the reader. anyway these are more like guidelines for something i was hoping you could talk about

but you want more, so here's more.
to start with, taz and i have been friends for some years now! back in early 2019 i was on the hbomberguy donkey kong 64 stream where i (briefly) tried to defend homestuck, which i guess gained me some form of notoriety/infamy. i can't remember if it was taz or kate who reached out to me first but i know taz liked my stuff (and i liked his!). then kate had me on pgen, i joined the pgen server, we all started gaming together and talking about homestuck in group chats. this period, pretty much through the entirety of 2019, is when i went from feeling like i had zero grasp on homestuck to becoming cohost of an at-the-time popular homestuck theory podcast! it's funny going back to my first appearance on pgen because you can tell i was so in over my head. i couldn't remember the names of the hiveswap trolls and still didn't even really know all the homestuck trolls by name. AND I OPTED OUT OF TALKING ABOUT VRISREZI LMAO. oh how turned the tables did the tables did turn

anyway, i actually talked to taz a bunch when i was first writing godfeels 1!
shortly after this we all did a stream for the launch of the epilogues with folks from the pgen server as well as hiveswap writer/director aysha u farah. i played gamzee lmao i still have the clown horn app on my phone from that
i guess i don't really know to what extent any of this is common knowledge anymore now that i think about it! this feels sort of superfluous to me but i guess this was FOUR YEARS AGO lmao
early godfeels straight up would not have existed without all these people. i cannot stress enough that literary obsession is a social contagion. i was not born a homestuck, i was made. and i think maybe some of the extremities of gf2 especially feel a little weird or dated these days, because on top of everything else godfeels was responding to it was also responding to the particularly toxic 2019-era vriscourse. so a big part of june's confrontational nature came from me being fucking sick of the baby's-first-conservatism that took root in the wider fandom when us cancelable queers had the audacity to like problematic womens and not apologize for it. i won't say anymore about that because like, whatever, it's all dead and buried now even if the ghost lingers. that ghost will have its day eventually! but not anytime soon.
ANYWAY, so, going back to the beginning even though i wrote godfeels alone, it came about in a context of lengthy conversations with other homestuck theorists. so when gf3 started to blow up in scale and become less about my trauma specifically, it made a lot of sense to broaden my horizons and get some new blood into the mix. the posts i linked at the start will fill in a bunch of gaps for you there, i think. it’s worth noting that a bunch of us already had a history of at least attempting to collaborate. we had a thing building for a while like a visual novel with one choice that was basically, what if we wrote every possible version of “transgender john” and just had them all together as branching paths. this was before some of the broader fandom really dug their heels in on the reactionary transphobia, after which point i at least lost some of my taste for that project. maybe we could come back to it someday, we wrote some cool stuff for that...
as far as my collaborative philosophy goes, idk. i first started writing fiction on the zeldapower forums in the early 2000s and developed a thick skin for critique pretty fast as a result. i wrote and rewrote constantly, shared what i could with friends and talked about plot/story/character ideas with them. when i realized in year two that writing school had nothing to offer me, i transferred to film. but i did so explicitly not wanting to be a director or writer or anyone above the line, really, because i didn't know what i wanted to make or even if i wanted to make something of my own. what i wanted was to help other people realize their own visions and see how they did it. so that's how i ended up working grip/electric in the oklahoma film industry, because it turns out all it really takes to get your foot in the door is to lose the ego and make yourself useful. it helps that i am cursed with constant psychological awareness of absolutely everything in my vicinity at all times, so i gained a reputation for being practically psychic the way i could know exactly what my bosses wanted lighting-wise before they even said anything.
i miss that job tbh. i loved the people, i felt more physically and psychologically fulfilled than at any job i've ever had. oklahoma has a relatively small film scene so it wasn't long before i was on a first name basis with most everyone working on my side of the state. when a crew is all on the same page, man, there's nothing like it. not every set can or should be like this, but some of my favorite experiences were on sets where it felt like everyone was the director. the director had their own vision but they knew how to adapt it to the location, to the ideas of technicians and craftspeople who had their own insights. a good director knows how to let their collaborators take ownership of the work, even when they reject their suggestions! i loved film work and i think about getting back to it sometimes. problem is it's extraordinarily physically demanding work and it leaves no time for anything else. 12 hour days five days a week minimum. i quit because i wanted to focus on video essays, one thing led to another, now we're here and homestuck changed my life lmao
so that's where i come from as writer. i have very strong opinions about my work and what it means and what it needs to do, but i try very hard not to have an ego about it.
the way we work together is pretty simple. when i finish the first draft of a chapter i’ll post it to the work server, and then folks will leave comments. but also, every member of the team has their own little corner of godfeels that they’ve adopted. taz is the dirkjake whisperer, julia is the queen of dana and the upsilons, etc. so when i write these characters i’ll ask for their insight, and invite them to modify or add to the scene as they see fit. sometimes this means prose, sometimes this means dialogue. our understanding is that nothing goes in the final published work without my approval, but that also that nothing is entirely off the table until we’ve had a conversation about it.
i get a lot of my storytelling philosophy from the tv show LOST, where every question was introduced with an explanation in mind but with the caveat that those explanations only remained true until the writers came up with something better. this gets back to something i said yesterday about needing a story to be dynamic and not planning things out too much in advance. for more detailed explanations, here’s a post i wrote about my hooks & hats philosophy, and then here’s another post about my process in general. but basically, i have this massive web of interconnected plotpoints going out very far into the future right? so when someone makes a suggestion i know exactly how possible it is to fit within that framework. i know how much information about any given hook has been introduced, so i know whether one explanation has been seeded too thoroughly to be changed.
but the flipside of that is that now my collaborators are inventing OCs! taz created a fantastic character named xifus that i can’t wait to write more of in 3.2A. we talk about this setting all the time, we talk about what makes sense for it, what would be cool, what mistakes would absolutely RUIN IT, how we can avoid the mistakes of our predecessors, all that fun stuff.
collaboration is all about honesty. godfeels has become what it is because we’re all fans both of homestuck, of anime, of broader culture... and of godfeels. my dirty secret is that i love writing godfeels because i’m its biggest fan. it frequently does not FEEL like i am composing this story, but rather that it is just happening to me. always i am wrangling cats in this petting zoo. i don’t want to be making this thing for the rest of my life but also this story is SO COOL and we are all chomping at the fucking bit to get to the upsilons and so much other shit besides. is that egomaniacal? idk. i think the idea that you’re supposed to be neutral leaning negative on your own work is kinda bullshit. but also, i don’t see the creation of art as bound to suffering or even being a process that requires much expertise. writing isn’t magic, even if it can feel that way sometimes.
i talk a lot about my work and how i write because i want to help demystify the process and try to show that it’s a learnable craft same as anything else. imo the preponderance of mediocre-to-great artists is not proof of Exceptional People but rather that it’s actually dirt simple to become a mediocre-to-great artist. all you need is time and money and access to the right tools! which is why so many mediocre artists are the rich failsons of killfactory millionaires. which is why every artist should be pro student debt relief, pro public transit, pro affordable housing, pro welfare, pro socialized medicine, pro deprivatizing mass media, and pro wide-ranging government arts funding. our nightmare neoliberal media landscape is the result of decades of making the creation of art & culture economically inaccessible to the working class, hence everything being set in rich suburbs with giant houses, hence the inescapability of pro-capitalist pro-nationalist messaging, hence the refusal of all national media to talk to trans people about trans issues, because only the middle and upper classes get to touch the levers of public perception and they have a direct economic incentive to convince the working class that they are middle class.
the notion that this stuff is at all mysterious or naturally the purview of those who can afford expensive degrees is just the narrative they sell to working people to cover up the fact that once you ascend past a certain income bracket, absolutely everything is just nepotism. it’s all just rich guys giving their rich friends and their rich friends’ stupid fucking libertarian manchildren high paying jobs forever. that’s why they never go away, that’s why they always fail up, that’s why trans women and queer people can get bullied off the face of the internet for half-joking that a fictional woman who did a murder was blameless in her crimes while grifters who moonlight at raytheon can weather blow after blow and stir the pot and solicit donations they don’t need and never disappear no matter how hated they are, because they HAVE money and they HAVE security so none of this shit is a real threat to anything besides their shallow fucking egos. which, you know, to be fair, threatening a rich person’s ego is basically the same thing as killing a man in cold blood, so who can say what is wrong or right?
there’s obviously a lot of complicating factors to the anticapitalist yarn i’ve spun here, but that’s how i see it. the rich want to own culture, they commodify it through copyright and box it up and insist that we are trespassers if we try to reflect those “““properties”““ through ourselves. that is, in part, a big reason why i haven’t given up on godfeels or tried to “file the serial numbers off.” i love this story and i am treating it with as much care as i would something original, because i believe this is art that stands up even with its imperfections and it’s insulting to me that “fanwork” is considered naturally lesser than “original” work when literally everything around us that is owned by disney et al was stolen from what was once an open culture. i reject the enclosure of the commons of our imagination, and andrew hussie themself quite famously said that postcanon homestuck belongs to the most conscientious and invested members of the fandom.
and frankly, even as i wish i COULD make a living off of godfeels alone, i like that my art isn’t particularly monetizable. i like that it is considered low art. i like that many people see it as shameful or a waste of time. i do not want to create a commodity. i do not want to run a business. i do not want to be famous. i want to make art that is freely available that maybe, just maybe, can help a handful of queer people deal with the shit going on in their life and have a good time in the process.
in short: we have no choice but to revolutionize the world.

Reviewing every song on the Dinosaurs Big Songs album
I was originally just gonna talk about my favs but I have something to say about all of them apparently lol to condense it to a solid number, so I just wanted to talk about the album as a whole before I started ranking them. Disclaimer, I’m not like a music man, I don’t study music or know the fancy words, I’m just a Dinosaurs fan. Oh yeah. Spoilers for Dinosaurs if you care I guess lol.
Im a Dinosaur (I can do whatever I want) - yknow when you listen to a song and you’re like “yeah i would’ve eaten this up as a kid”. This feels less specific to Baby and more for the children that loved dinosaurs, like the actual animals, and wanted to be one. That was me. So I can rock with that. It’s a little boring and repetitive lyrically but it’s an alright opener, even if it doesn’t really match the vibe of the rest of the album super great imo.
In a Perfect World - Charlene slays. This is so Perfect Day from Legally Blonde core. It’s Charlene singing about how a perfect world for her would be if she could just go shopping all day and date infinitey amount of cute boys and honestly I respect that, love her.
I Wanna Be King - They won me over with the first lines of this song “if I was king of the world, I’d solve everything with mindless teenage enthusiasm and rock n roll”. This is basically the edgy teenage boy version of In a Perfect World sang by Robbie and Spike but I think I like this one a smidge better because I kinda just like rock music more. It’s pretty decent. I find it kinda sad how both of the teenager characters have songs like “if I was in charge, things would be like this!” Highlighting their naivety, enthusiasm for making the world a better place (when I say better place, I mean better place from the perspective of a teenage dinosaur im being lenient) and their optimism, when you pair it with how the show ended and another song later on this list.
Grandma’s Comin - it’s okay. Idk no real feelings about this one tbh. While I’m ambivalent about the song itself, I’ve actually always been a fan of Earl’s singing voice when you get to hear it in the main show and it really shines through here. I like the choice they made to give him a more bluesy song since his voice has almost a Screamin Jay Hawkins quality to it so that was a pretty smart choice to give him this song.
Stone Age Bayou - The more I think about this song, the more annoyed I get. On one hand I really love the vibe here, Monica brings almost a Jimmy Buffet vibe to the table with this, very relaxing and very fun. But the lyrics are what I’m upset with. Monica would never sing about this! I could be wrong, but I thought one of the biggest parts of Monica’s character was how they handled her divorce and how she realized she didn’t need a relationship to be happy and she actively criticizes the misogyny in the dinosaurverse in several episodes. So why is she singing about how she wishes she had a man to live with on the shore and play it all completely serious?? Rubs me wrong in the worst way. So I liked the harmonies and beat n stuff, but also I hate the Monica character assassination here. That’s her one song too, no other cameos or nothing. Idk it’s on the lower end of the tier list for me. This could be fixed if with a few lyrical tweaks, like it could be her singing about her real estate business, since she sings about how cool her fantasy home is in this a lot.
I’m the Baby (gotta love me) - no doubt the breakout of this album and the one everyone remembers the most of these. This song is also shorter than I remember it, since they took out most of the interjections from other characters on the album version. I think this is the only song here that actually appears in the show (80% sure the episode in question in Little Boy Boo at the very end) and yeah it’s pretty good, if I’m comparing it to the other Baby song on here, it’s a lot better to me than I’m a Dinosaur and captures his character a little better. One of my favs here.
Coldblooded Guy - I love Richfield more than anything but I’m not completely sold that his voice sounds super great carrying a song all by himself. Nothing super special imo it’s just him singing about comically evil things he’s done. It’s alright.
He’s a Lizard - Not a massive fan tbh, Fran’s voice is incredible but the song itself ehh. Ethyl’s interjections are pretty funny though lol. Fran and Earl’s relationship is in the same vein as Marge and Homer to me. There’s moments in there that you can tell they genuinely care for eachother. They have a lot of disagreements and rough patches and miscommunication, but they stick together. I like these relationships but these two examples and their execution in their respective shows mostly fall flat for me. The combination of how Earl’s character arc is and also how his more iffy traits are more on display in this song, just makes me sorta sad for Fran. I think it’s great that Fran loves her mediocre husband and sees him no matter what anyone says, but more than anything I just wish Earl’s growth was more obvious by the end of the series or they tries marriage counseling or something idk. But also it’s a sitcom from the 90s so whatever. It could be a bad sign that in my head I started imagining a Squilf and Bramble amv to this lol.
Poor Slobs with Terrible Jobs - my top favorite from the album! How do I start oh man. First things first, it has some great foreshadowing to how the show ends (climate change and mass extinction) as well as noting how absolutely stupid and monotonous their jobs are as tree pushers. Pretty dark melody, I almost got a little bit of a Worthless from Brave Little Toaster in this. Not a lot but a little bit, pointing at the sense of hopelessness and how Roy has a bit here where he dreams of having an actual job he can be proud of but can’t because of his lack of education. I also like how the parts of the song where Richfield interjects, it feels more like an army chant than an actual song. I love Richfield more in this kind of role. Something something about how ceos are more unabashedly evil than ever and Richfield literally causes the ice age that killed them all because of his own greed, folly, and how none of the characters had either the bravery or power to stop him. I love how Earl clearly knows that what he does is wrong even if he doesn’t have all the knowledge to why it is, and still does it because he’s worked for the company 20 years and it’s all he knows. Scream. Prime example of one of the many reasons why I love Dinosaurs, baby!
Eon after Eon - I like how literally no actual character in specific sings this, it’s just a dinosaur themed love song. Pretty good actually I like the 80s synth in this and I feel like if you put this in an actual legit love song playlist, it would fit in pretty well, with a few small changes (feeling 40 feet tall. Lol.) it’s not even like. A romantic love song, it’s just two dinosaurs uplifting eachother and they use the word friendship multiple times. I choose to believe this is a spotlight on how platonic love is just as important and beautiful as romantic love.
Be a Herbivore - Pretty damn short, it’s more skit than actual song but the song parts were pretty okay. Before listening to it I was sorta thinking that there would be a Robbie interjection in here since in the show he actually had an herbivore identity crisis (I’m a bisexual Robbie truther) but it’s just Earl being shamed by his refrigerator. It’s nothing special, just whatever.
Snoozin Time - I love you dinosaur lullaby. I love how it slowly drifts from normal lullaby with a slight prehistoric angle, to a desperate plea of “you destroyed the entire house and ate our neighbors please sleep I’m begging”. Fran sings this and again, I love her voice. I also love the choice they made of putting this song at the very end lmao, shout out to parents of the 90s that had to stick it out to their horrible kids blasting this on loop probably.
Overall a pretty fun time! Bummed out the Earl and Pearl episode came out two years after Big Songs because I would’ve lovveddd some of Pearl’s songs on here (im a country fan I can’t help it). Sorta a shame it’s not on Spotify but if you wanna check it out, it’s easy to find on YouTube, only a half hour long.

some time after chapter 3: "ok i get that he has a crush on sonia but like. he's becoming a simp about it. hope that doesn't last"
chapter 4 onwards to the end of the game basically: "???what the fuck have they done to you you annoying little shit"
and my opinion of him now? he's my scrunkly, he's a dumb little bitch baby, he's my little meow meow, a wet tissue paper boy (all said with affection) <3 his design still slaps and i lov him. feels like im doing this 👇🏼 to him in my brain:

genuinely what is trigun
my biggest current hyperfixation, its like two and half mangas/two animes/a movie
it started as just the manga "Trigun", then was adapted into the 1998 anime, then the manga CONTINUED in the form of "Trigun Maximum" which has 14 volumes plus a little addon anthology book called "Multiple Bullets" (but I don't know much about it specifically). im on volume 11 and it is KILLING ME [positive]!! there was a movie, Badlands Rumble, in 2010, most people have kinda mixed feelings about it cause the characterization is questionable but I still like it. the latest rendition of it is Trigun Stampede, made by the same studio that made Beastars. you might also hear about "trigun omnibus"-- thats just a reprint of the manga condensed into 7 books instead of 14. Trigun Stampede was the first one I watched and its my personal favorite but I love all versions of it truly madly deeply. it's my absolute favorite kind of story: the kind that slow boils you like a frog, gradually getting more and more difficult to explain as it goes on, but that also makes it more and more difficult to get more people into it
the main character, Vash The Stampede, is a wanted gunman with a varying amount of money on his head depending on the rendition / point in time but usually 60 billion double dollars, except hes actually a pacifist who avoids violence if he can and refuses to kill. his designs vary between renditions (I think he wears like 7 different coats in the manga?) but generally, blonde spiky hair, orange glasses, prosthetic arm, red coat. trigun stampede is the most different design from the previous renditions, a lot simpler mostly (except for his arm, bane of many fanartists though I honestly really like drawing it) but basically hes my biggest blorbo I both love him and want to be him. people call him a twink but hes not hes built like a brick shithouse under the coat
hes usually accompanied by Wolfwood, religious trauma personified whos hard to describe because his personality varies the most between renditions-- though his design is pretty consistent across the board, wears a suit and carries a big wrapped-up cross thats actually a gun called "The Punisher". he's usually a priest, but in Stampede he's an undertaker. also before I knew what Trigun was when I saw people at a convention cosplaying him I thought he was a supernatural character
and Meryl and Milly (though Milly isn't in Trigun Stampede yet), who in most renditions are insurance agents assigned to follow Vash but then get attached to him like the sad pathetic wet cat he is
then theres Vash's fuckass twin brother who I hate, Millions Knives, edgelord supreme that, depending on the version, I either couldnt care less about or just flat out dislike. I'd probably see his appeal more if I didn't have sibling trauma but a lot of people are capital f Freaks about him and Vash's relationship the fandom has an incest ship problem worse than Homestuck its fucking dire out here and thats one of the contributing reasons I do not like him. its kindof hard to explain his motivations without spoiling pretty much the whole plot but hes the main antagonist of the story and basically just. a grown ass man consistently and obsessively trying to get his brother to side with him even though he wants to Kill and Vash does Not
theres a bunch more characters but ive already been typing for an hour about this and if I dont quit while im ahead ill be here all night and forget to eat. I will frantically half-explain Trigun to anyone who will listen because im DESPERATE to get more people into it without spoiling too much right out the gate (though usually I get way too ahead of myself and end up spoiling it anyway). my trigun hyperfixation probably borders on unhealthy but fuck it we ball

"The Return of Midnight Sparkle" - a review
so uh hi, and um im doing this thing because my interest in this has me excited like pinkie pie on too much fucking cupcakes and I really wanted to share my entire whole thoughts of what I thought of the story for "the return of midnight sparkle" and I wanna sure them all here! Prolouge: a very lovely opening to see what kind of story we are getting into, it sets the tone pretty well in my opinion, shining a light on the many things, thoughts of the main character, and the reasons behind their future actions and thoughts, very much enjoying the idea of how sunset is used here Chapter 1: getting to see and hear your versions of the mane 7 in a sense like this, really set the scene for how things are a lil different or much of the same in some cases, love the setting of the table itself and it was amazing to see all the characters like this! Chapter 2: when you said that this was gonna be like an entire season condensed into writing, I was pleasantly surprised to truly feel like I just spaced out in an afternoon with treehugger to watch time pass by, each character showing different mini-friendship lessons to sunset (at least in my mind) that she may have to use later on in her life or have to take into consideration, especially with how the way it ended, it felt like the climax of a season and the culmination of all the lil lessons learned, and if the mane 7 were allowed to cuss or do talk about stuff more adult themes, I'd see it being pretty much like this, sure its your interpretation but I personally really enjoyed those interpretations! Chapter 3: ohohhoohoho yesssssssssssss, I love all of this, the way twilight and sunset interact, the way pinkie pie reacts (even in this version that you ended up on) is still funny, and it really feels like you elevated her clueless nature to a level that I relate to, just the interactions and emotions were so good, twilight by the end giving in and such, one last push, always the overdetermined gal Chapter 4: I love this, I love the factor of how midnight taunts and prods at everyone but sunset to a degree, how the feelings there are not only in twilight but also in midnight and that theme continues as she tries to coax sunset into becoming the other evil ruler with her, a show that deep down she is still just a crazed version of the same twilight Chapter 5: OHOHOHHOHOHOHOHOOHOHO I love this prison break scene, I love the tension as sunset does her things, giving something for everyone to do, and I actually giggled a little at the factor of pinkie's line when she was given her task, the sequence is beautiful, love midnight also having to try and desperately follow sunset, desperately as the inner battle of twilight and midnight happens, but then sunset going on, and ohhhh I swear some parts I imagined midnight and twlights worried overlapped, harmony between the two of them over the love of sunset shimmer, they did not want her to be hurt, and yet in the end, that was midnights downfall, a simple bit of the unexpected love sparked and stopped both minds in their tracks, long enough for sunset to be a badass and end it off epicly Chapter 6: and I gotta say with keeping it semi-spoiler free for the sneaky sneaks who didn't read the story and just tried to skip here for a summary or something, the ending, the way sunset and twilight interact, everything sunset gains and everything that happens, it's a beautiful way to close it all off for a official chapter, such a nice delicate ending, also mach 5 twilight inbound was not something I was expecting but the visual in my brain that I got from the description was an awesome one

new ff7r trailer got me fucked up in the club, they designed it to be as confusing as humanly possible so here are my condensed and digested thoughts on whatever the hell happened in it
as the #1 She Will Live truther it took me a minute to like wade through all of the misdirection in the trailer and i feel like im still not shaken on everything. especially with stuff like the whispers behind her? shes also like, just casting holy. and we have no idea why yet. there's nothing so far that would really insinuate that she would need to do that, but she's doing it. and if i wanted to really pick apart what we're looking at, the scene is paced very differently from the original? it might just be the trailer cut, but she opens her eyes, looks at cloud(?), there's immediately black feathers, and before she can even smile at him it's panning up to show sephiroth. so like... obviously something's super up, and i have a couple guesses as to what
the one im leaning the hardest on right now is that it's straight up not real. whatever we're looking at it's not the real, present aerith in cloud's timeline. i dont really know exactly what this means, if it's a vision sephiroth is inducing into cloud as a "this will happen because you're a fuckup" trick to get cloud on his side, or if it's jenova-related, i have no idea.
but like, there's fucking whispers in the background! which makes no sense! in cloud's timeline, the whispers are super dead. we spent a whole game destroying the thread of fate, so if they're actually back something crazy has to be happening. BUT, they are still around in zack's timeline, so maybe what we're seeing is somehow HIS aerith?
my last guess is that it's a vision of the original aerith, from the original game. this doesn't align with those minor differences i mentioned earlier (which, in a game as anal about that as ff7remake, might actually mean something important), but i could see it still serving the purpose of "sephiroth showing cloud a vision", or maybe this is what marlene somehow shows zack, now that we know this is what she was shown in remake (!!!). i dont know! i think it's a safe bet that we will see aerith die in this game, but that doesn't mean The aerith who is with us the entire game will actually end up dying.
poking around i'm still seeing a lot of people expecting her to die, which leaves me to continue thinking that her living is an unexpected enough subversion that doing it would be worthwhile. especially with how they're bracing us for it in the marketing, it feels perfect for a rug-pull, and i think the lyrics of the new song (stated to be aerith's response to cloud in hollow, the main theme song of ff7remake that was cloud calling out to aerith) drill that in. the full version of the song from the performance has lyrics that suggest aerith wanting to be saved in a pointed way that hasn't really happened before, or at least not this overtly, whereas the lyrics as they're presented in the trailer itself make it seem like it's a goodbye song.
but by that measure, i feel way more sure that the most tragic thing that could happen is not aerith dying- it's the opposite, it's cloud being torn away from her, specifically. i still feel pretty confident that cloud will be sephiroth's vessel in his titular rebirth, and that might be how they go about it all, but it feels a little weird to undercut things in that way? aerith is already still alive somehow in zack's timeline, despite everyone else being confirmed(?) dead, so i don't know what to think about that.
there's also one line from tifa that's really making me wonder how thigns are going to go in this game- she tells cloud to let her help him, which evokes cloud and tifa in the lifestream for me. we already saw a shot of tifa seemingly in the lifestream, so like, are we going to try and get to that early? are we doing that prematurely with a cloud who doesn't trust tifa, preventing her from being able to help piece his memories back together? that sounds like it would be fucking crazy, this also leads me to believe tifa is going to die somehow by the end of the game, which i still think would be more pointed than killing aerith again (as much as i dont want it to happen, for gay reasons)
right now i think the two most likely possibilities are:
aerith will live in the main timeline, she'll be the lone protagonist of the third game and figuring out how she can even begin to put the pieces back together is a major driving factor
aerith will live in zacks timeline. now, zack and aerith are entirely localized to a separate reality from the rest of the party, setting up for a faux-reunion in the third game, while giving them a way to back out into advent children, verbatim, once everything is over
i'll be honest: unless you're a purist who is here just for the preservation of the original story as-is, option 2 sucks. it's fuckin awful. it makes everything that these games are trying to do feel totally unimportant, and it makes me wonder why they bothered with the theme of changing fate if things are just going to go back to normal at the end. it's really bad. ever since they mentioned that everything will still line back up with AC, it's given me a bad vibe. like, what makes advent children happen is just the presence of the sephiroth remnants and geostigma, which can still happen. but it's also important to remember that like, remake sephiroth! is post AC sephiroth! this dude has already been through all that! it doesn't make any sense why he would want to go back to that again, it arguably makes a weird ass timeloop which kind of sucks. dont like that!
this is all of the most important stuff i've been dwelling on. this trailer was a lot, and it was definitely designed to be confusing, with biggs alive, jessie (fake) alive, barret red and bugenhagen in either the cave of the gi or the temple of the ancients?, basically everything that happens with zack, the fact that the play they do in the gold saucer is straight up just loveless now, it's all fucked. this is me coping with how fucked this trailer was

i couldnt agree more with you! i really dont understand why everyone is so hyped over seven. i have to admit it kind of disappointed me with its shallow lyrics. and i dont understand the purpose of the explicit version? i really hate it. and i think its okay not to like every single song they put out, being an army definitely doesnt mean you have to agree with everything they say, do… but i really hope that the rest of the songs in his album wont be so shallow and i really want them to be more unique like the rest of their songs… i feel like with songs like seven you can listen to them a couple of times and then get bored (but maybe thats just my opinion idk). tbh i think jk is just trying to show us something different than what he showed us previously and i dont blame him for that. but im definitely more looking forward to the songs that he will actually write because im sure that he is capable of writing deeper and more meaningful lyrics. and even if the whole album is in english it doesnt necessarilly mean its going to be completely westernized, right? he did say he wants to try new genres… i think he just wants to challenge himself to try something new and i think a fully-english album is a part of that.
either way, i really wish him all the best because i genuinely believe he’s a bit lost and lonely without other members. to me, it seems that the hiatus definitely had the biggest impact on him? but at the end on the day, 2025 is not THAT far away and im excited for when we can see them as a group again💜 jk even said (recently) that after hiatus they will come back even stronger and i think these words are definitely worth lookig forward to💜

if Watt wanted a no brainer song then he succeeded 😂 and yeah i don't like the explicit ver lol someone i follow here said it sounds like they only did it for shock value, which i kinda agree with. the explicit ver cheapened a song that barely had any meaning to begin with (y'all do not come after me for this. you know it's true) but i guess people really wanted to hear him say fuck 😂
true. jk is definitely trying to show a different side of him and good for him, honestly. but i don't think it necessarily reflects in the quality of the songs yk? i think this is more about presenting a new image rather than exploring the sound.
when you say just bc it's in english doesn't mean it's completely westernized, that is also true. but then considering the people he's working with, i'm not holding out much hope for that 😔
the hiatus... yeah :( they raised him, he literally spent half of his life with them and this is the first time he has to be apart from them in like 13 years. also i feel like there's this kinda pressure for them to all release a solo album before enl*sting, so idk if this also plays a part in him not taking the time to focus on His sound himself but yeah just putting this out there

Guess who just wrote a really long and detailed post in my notes app that I accidentally managed to delete. meeeeeeeee <3
So yeah, for better or for worse, heres a more condensed version of a very long post where I complain about 2000!Judas again that Ive written in like, two hours probably (I know that sounds like a lot but trust me, it isnt for me)
Basically, when I watched this version for the first time I thought the reason I didnt like this portrayal of Judas and thought he was really unsympathetic was because of the actor and some of the directorial choices made for his scenes. But then I rewatched it, paid closer attention and even made pretty detailed notes as I was watching like the nerd I am, and I realized that no, the direction is consistantly really good and does a great job at putting you in the characters head, which is a good way to get an audience to sympathize with a character, even for Judas' scenes. Heaven On Their Minds is a great example of this, here are the notes I took during the scene bc it took me days to write that original post that I deleted and I dont feel like rewriting stuff:
• At the start of Heaven On Their Minds: Judas singing directly at Jesus while theyre engulfed in blue but glowing orange before the apostles show up and the lighting changes to something more orange-y golden (signaling Judas snapping out of his thoughts about Jesus and back into reality) • At the end of Heaven On Their Minds: Judas stepping out of the warm golden light with Jesus and his apostles back into a cooler, blue-ish light to signify his disconnect with the others, wavering trust in Jesus
So, if its not the direction thats the issue, what is it? The actor? Well yeah, I think the actor is definitely the bigger issue for me here. idk if thats a hot take, I certainly dont think it should be. However, there are two big directorial choices that I have issues with, one thats very obvious and mostly concentrated in one scene and one thats a bit more 'spread out' so to speak and that I initially had some trouble pinpointing
The first and more obvious one is the Superstar scene. This song already has some tonal issues by virtue of being a funky disco song sandwiched between The Scene Where They Brutally Beat Jesus and The Scene Where They Brutally Crucify Jesus and having Judas be all smiley during it like hes happy about Jesus dying a slow and painful death only to get all sad at the very end when they actually start crucifying him does not help. Like at all. Its like they didnt get that Judas was meant to be like, frustrated during this song because it acts as an extension of his character throughout the musical, who was very frustrated with Jesus because he didnt understand him or why he did the things he did. Its also meant to be an expression of the audience's presumed feelings, since we, like Judas, just spent a long time with this guy and thought we kinda understood what his deal was only to then realize that no, we did not, actually.
Thats pretty much it, there is a similar weird kind of smugness and almost schadenfreude permeating the rest of this guy's performance as well, its just the most noticeable in that song
Now, Im gonna change the topic here for just a second because I think its necessary to talk about the costuming, specifically the colors of the clothes, to properly explain myself. Unlike the 2012 version, which did its own thing when it came to assigning colors to these characters, the 2000s version takes pretty much all the notable character colors from the 1973 movie. That means Jesus wears white, Herod also wears white which could be a way to visually connect them since Herod is referred to as king and seems to have some kind of special authority over jewish people even though he apparently doesnt have a lot of actual state power, kind of how Jesus is also hailed as king of sorts even though he obviously doesnt have any kind of stately power either ? idk, Im not analysing this further bc thats not what the post is about, Caiaphas, Annas and their three guys all wear black, Pilate wears purple (albeit a cooler tone than the 70s version thats closer to the purple the roman guards wore), Judas wears red and Mary wears red... in the 2000s version. She wears orange in the 70s movie
So, why would they change that when they otherwise changed very little about the costumes' colors? Im not gonna beat around the bush here, they were trying to emphasize the idea of Judas and Mary as foils and romantic rivals with Judas being the dark 'incorrect' "option" and Mary being totally morally good as a contrast. Think about it, Judas wears mostly black in this version with the red being closer to an accent color while Mary wears mostly red with black as an accent color, theyre wearing the same color scheme but inverted and Judas ended up with the darker and more menacing version of it (although I would argue its kinda hard to style the red-black combo as anything but edgy, vaguely threatening, vaguely sexy and seductive or a combination of any of those), Judas is a lot more physically aggressive towards Mary in this film which wasnt the case in the 1973 version (I havent rewatched the 2012 one yet and I dont remember a lot of the details but Im pretty sure he wasnt as physical in that version either), theres that weird bit right after I Dont Know How To Love Him where he inecplicably shows up to, idk, intimidate Mary? which then leads directly into Damned For All Time/Blood Money and the way its framed makes it seem like his betrayal was motivated by jealousy and some weird yandere-esque "If I cant have him, no one can" line of logic which is just weird. Like, I dont dislike this concept on the face of it, but they had no idea how to pull it off well
Actually, now that I think about it I feel like they work well enough as foils without any attempts to emphasize them as romantic rivals. Like, obviously Judas sings that little reprise of I Dont Know How To Love Him before his death but also his whole thing at the start of the musical was that he was turning away from Jesus while Mary's thing was that she was very close and loyal to him from beginning to end, like thats one of the things that Peter's Denial demonstrates right
Whatever, thats kind of it. I feel like thats a pretty abrupt ending to this but I dont care that much lol. In conclusion, although I love this movie for the direction and lighting I have a lot of shit to complain about, mostly relating to Judas and also this post ended up being a lot longer than expected, hope you enjoyed
