On 6/28 Iām hoping to do a new mini series on my little channel called The Thirty Dollar Laundry Club.Ā
Iām a little nervous, because several people on TikTok already do stuff like this and theyāre waaay better at it than I am but hey, this is my tiny little slice of something weird to try so try it I shall.Ā
I was in the salon one afternoon, desperately missing my friends because weāve all been separated in the pandemic. I was wearing the uniform- all black- and as much as I tried to keep it within my aesthetic I was struggling because itās so easy to ruin things with bleach in the hair industry. I just wasnāt feeling very gender validated in my style, and Iām a passionate Autumn/Fall lover so I almost always forget to buy summer clothes. Not to mention the huge style RUT I was in.Ā
Then I just started wondering... how would my costume designer friends dress me if they could style an outfit for me? Not a character in a play, not an image Iām portraying, but Me? How would my close friend, the Swamp Witch, style me? What do their choices say about how Iām perceived as I move through the world? Would my non-binary friends or queer friends be better at picking something for me than my cis friends?Ā
In episode two, I work with my friend Gemma to style me for a day and they were entirely charming and engaged the shop employees in helping us along on our mission.Ā āItās a social experiment theyāre doing on their channel,ā they told the manager of the shop.Ā āTheyāre doing a social experiment!ā And I realized that it kind of was. My intentions had originally beenĀ ācool shopping date with friendsā and it had turned into some really interesting and thoughtful outings with people I love.Ā
Iām having a maudlin day. Itās been raining for a week and the threats that inspired me/drove me to write [redacted] are haunting me once more. But even if it isnāt the most professional quality set of episodes, even if itās just silly people shopping - I was not able to film in any of the stores- Iām pretty proud of myself for at least trying something new.Ā
The Rules of the #thirtydollarlaundryclub:Ā
1. You have 30$ to purchase the entire outfit. (Except shoes- I have a billion shoes) --- I provide the cash to my friends
2. It must be whatever YOU perceive aĀ ānon binaryā outfit would beĀ
3. Must be season-relevant. Currently weāre shopping for summer.
4. I, the subject, cannot give you any feedback. YOU pick the outfit.
5. I have to wear the outfit for at least one day, no matter what. (the exception being if it doesnāt fit my body).Ā

Episode 2 of the #thirtydollarlaundryclub is on my channel and Iām pretty pleased with how these are evolving. Iām not a great video creator, Iām not the best YouTuber, but Iām definitely having fun making these and my wardrobe is looking really cute.
The premise of this if you are a new follower- Iām a 30 something non-binary queer who is 1. Not *quite* out but also out? and 2. I feel as though non-binary people are expected to be androgynous but I was born into a very feminine shaped body and, letās face it, dresses are really breezy when it feels like youāre living inside a blowdryer. In this weekās episode, my non-binary friend Gemma finds me a great outfit for the office.Ā
