do you like Greek myth in general or just epic?
I'd say in general,
My grandmother's family traveled from greece to turkey when she was just a baby so i really dont have any ties to greece at all. Not the language nor the culture. And i won't stand here and claim to be greek in any way because I'm really not. But it is what got me interested in learning about the history which in turn lead me down the rabbit hole of learning about ancient greece. (And with it parts of the mythology)
A couple years ago i took a trip to Ephesus (Efes, izmir) and in the future if given the opportunity I'd love to go see the remains of Troy next. (Truva, Hissarlik)
(The obsession with -) Epic kind of came out of nowhere (cough Jay's tiktok) and now I'm scrambling to get my hands on a translation of the Odyssee and the iliad.
When posting about Epic i don't really bother with historical accuracy because i consider it it's own thing that's undeniably modern so i just have fun with it.
#Sorry for the super long answer#epic the musical#epic musical#epic odysseus#epic#greek mythology#ancient greece#ancient greek mythology#odysee#the iliad#Nyssa#jorge rivera herrans#Troy#ephesus#efes#Truva

Ianto:
Wears suits, looks like an English gentleman, or rather tea boy, tries to be as normal and boring as one could to not gain to much attention. Is the coffee maker/barista of his team (but he does the best one, so it's good he is doing that). He is the receptionist at a tourist information office
That's what everyone sees. A suit wearing polite unassuming restrained teaboy.
Now, behind the quiet facade:
The tourist office is actually a cover, as behind that office an alien hunting institute is located for which he actually works as assistant/butler, cleaner, driver, catologust and researcher and is good on field missions. He is the boy for everything. In the basement of that institute, he has hidden his girlfriend who had been modified by cybermen to turn into a cyberwoman as well. He hoped, he will find a cure. Unfortunately there was none before she escaped and tried to kill him and his team. His pet pterodactyl and his boss killed her.
At one point, Ianto allowed a slave trader to take his boss. Ianto later rescued him from this after all.
Eventually he fell in love and got together with his boss and they can be broken together forever. (Unfortunately not, but we are disillusioned and don't want to know that one of them dies permanently at one point.)
+ improper usage of a stopwatch
+ he bought pet insurance for his pterodactyl while he tried to land a spaceship (he is no pilot, he knows shit about landing a flying vehicle, he tried to land that thing with the help of a lady from a call center in Izmir, Turkey)
+ he shot his boss (yes, the one he is in love with) in the head to check if he is the real one and not someone/something else pretending to be the boss (don't worry, boss is unable to stay dead)
And I think I was just scratching on the surface. There is definitely a not normal person behind that normal wall he had build as his appearance.
Pete:
starts off as the comic relief side character. gets kidnapped and tortured. laughs in the face of the man electrocuting his dick. ends up sleeping with him later (by choice. like he wants him), decides he's in love witht he single most crazy unhinged character in the show and reduces him to like crying in his noodles because Pete escaped the safe house torture/sex dungeon where he was kinda a prisoner. shoots his man in the arm (to keep from being killed by other people), beats the shit out of him (that one is for personal reasons), the man confesses his undying love and kisses him before running off, pete chases after him, has to point a gun at him again, the man runs off, pete quits his job and chases after him again, pete stops the man from killing himself and is like "I'm your pet, you're my owner, you have to feed me" (it's a callback from their days in the safehouse torture/sex dungeon), the man gets shot by someone else, and pete goes crazy kills the guy who shot him. so yeah he's totally just a silly comic relief character
youtube
(^little video that shows how not normal he is lol. cw for torture and violence)

- is OMER CELIK late to class again? how does the 24 year old SENIOR expect to get their degree in PSYCHOLOGY? professors say that they are LIVELY but i heard that they are CYNICAL. hopefully they’ll make it to graduation! - SPORTS & CLUBS: ice hockey (center)
STATS
full name: omer celik.
age: twenty-four.
gender & pronouns: cismale. he/him.
zodiac sign: libra.
date of birth: oct 1st.
place of birth: izmir, turkey.
sexuality: bisexual.
BACKSTORY
omer celik grew up in izmir, turkey. the middle child of 5 siblings. there was always something happening in the celik household.
his parents wanted nothing more than to cultivate a proper life for the celik siblings and never once pressured them into/out of anything. they were the most supportive pair but also the most overworked. the small age gap between the siblings never made things easy whether it was financially or not.
when omer was old enough to understand this, he started helping around the house and picking up his own slack.
though omer was a bit of a dreamer. he was constantly imagining what he wanted out of life and was the type to put action plans in place to try and get there.
hockey has always been one of his biggest goals but also generally being able to take care of his family and pay back his parents for all they put into raising them and putting their kids first.
omer worked hard and earned a hockey scholarship to tcu and that's when he made the big decision to move away from his home and his family. it wasn't an easy one because he's so naturally attached to them and he's such a family guy in general but he has a vision!!
failure isn't really an option for him at this point and hockey is everything. he wants to go pro after college and eventually do the whole buy his family a big house and surprise them with gifts and spoil the hell out of them.
so while he's fun company at parties, he'll refrain from drinking or going hard, specifically if he has practice the next day or something because it's always health first!!
PERSONALITY
big family guy as established already
gift giving is his love language he loves to spoil people even just simple things like making them playlists is fun to him
he also really loves cooking and is slowly learning how to because living away from home has made him miss nice home cooked meals
he's really hard on himself sometimes especially after a loss but he doesn't let himself get too hung up on things and moves on. his motto is i didn't come this far just to come this far.
hes slightly struggling with his grades because he doesn't know balance tbh.. he's so hyperfocused on sports and succeeding there that it's a bit difficult to just sit down and focus sometimes. he's trying his best tho.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
childhood friends (if ur chara grew up in turkey this would be cool!!)
best friends, ride or dies, confidants (he's friends w everyone most of the time but these people are his inner circle, core bffs)
ex friends (miscommunication trope perhaps? we love that..)
unrequited crush
friends w benefits (bc he doesn't have time for relationships lowkey doesn't let himself date)
awkward one night stand
tutor perhaps bc he will not sit down and study unless its last minute so he needs someone to hold him accountable
#∘*₊˚♡ intro ↷ omer.#i formatted this differently than my other one pls ignorekdjkjsd#anyway working on my third then i'll post :)#tcuintro

So you said Turkey is one of your top 4 places? Can you tell me something about your time there?
(I've never been but I've got a special reason why it's close to my heart and I'm curious about it)
yes! i loved turkey, which is saying a lot given the time i went there.
i just happened to end up in turkey the day before the airport got bombed in 2016 and i left about four days before the attempted coup, so it was not a very safe time to travel but oh well!
firstly, istanbul was really quiet. the hagia sophia, the blue mosque, the grand bazaar etc., everything was pretty quiet, which meant that we got a really personalised view of things despite the amazing weather. istanbul is stunning. the architecture is amazing, the food is so tasty (everywhere we went in turkey, actually), the locals we met were really friendly and wanted to chat! we had great convos with people at restaurants, tourist spots, shisha bars, the supermarket...you name it. THE BREAD. turkish bread is next level. divine. baba ganoush. TURKISH COFFEE. the strongest coffee ever i love it. they also had some absolutely banging iced black coffee. i remember we took bottles of it to the coast with us!
we also went down to fethiye and did some of the turquoise coast. that is the most beautiful ocean i have ever swum in. crystal clear, deep blue, perfection. all the islands are stunning, the sunsets are out of this world. sleeping out on the deck of a boat in the summer heat under the stars is heaven to me. we would only wake up in the morning when we got too hot and then just jump straight into the ocean to cool off.
i also went to izmir but not for long enough to really comment! i want to go back to turkey so badly, mostly because i wanted to do pamukkale and cappadocia! but i'd also love to go back to istanbul when it's thriving!
i'm curious about your interest (although no pressure to tell me!)

❝ ...some nights when only the moon is out for light, he feels more like a greek tragedy.
Name: Ibrahim Bağcı Age: 29 Species: werewolf Lives in: Mystic grove, Amy Baxter's neighbor Occupation: firefighter Affiliation: part of the pack
Family:
Father and 3 brothers who live in Turkey
Powers: Aside from the usual werewolf powers that include heightened senses and strength, Ibrahim has learned to use his smell sense a lot better due to younger years where he needed to be able to track a person. Since coming into Greywood he can get a sense of people’s emotions. When he is rested he can do so without too much effort, gathering whether someone is angry or sad or happy, but when tired he needs to push himself a lot to do so. However, when unintentional the opposite is in effect. When he is tired he finds it harder to block out emotions and when he is rested he can do so easily with an imaginary wall between them Hobbies: Abe has little hobbies. When he needs to get a pick-me-up he usually goes camping in the middle of nowhere and would stay there for a few days. He likes hunting, but mainly when in wolf form. He likes running and training. He enjoys drinking but this is mostly to hide from emotions. Something that doubtfully anyone knows is that he sits alone at home he sometimes carves things from small blocks of wood with a knife. He's not good and rarely keeps the figures.
Born in Emre, Turkey, Ibrahim was the first son of a young couple. His father was a stonemason at Çeçen Mermer, just 30 minutes away with a bus that took them from around the area every morning at 5am and returned them close to dark. They lived in a home along with the parents of his father and his uncle that had not yet married. Growing up Ibrahim was taught to love the earth as his grandfather was a farmer, retired from stonemacing himself long ago due to injury.
By the age of eleven Ibrahim knew that he wanted to someday leave his hometown and pursue education in the university in İzmir and so he strived for that throughout his school years, studying hard while also following his parent’s lessons at home and preparing for a pilgrimage. During the years there were victories and losses. He did get into the school’s football team for a short while until he had to start staying home more due to his mother falling ill a year after his grandmother had died. As the only child it fell to him to look after her while his grandfather was out and his father worked. His father tried to arrange a marriage a few times but with no success as their family seemed to have a bad reputation in the bigger cities due to an uncle of Ibrahim’s being caught into bad dealings… When he turned seventeen, after his mother had passed for a year and his father had remarried, he was happy to take a bus and go off to find his place in İzmir, finish his school there and build his own family.
This all seemed set in stone, in his head, a pilgrimage plan to Mecca after his graduation and before his university would start, having been accepted in Dokuz Eylül with finance. He worked two jobs to be able to pay for himself, wanting to make his father proud and not needing to ask for money. A janitor at a local store and for a nightclub that was opposite the building in which he rented a small room from an old friend of his uncle’s. At first he was just a promoter, stacks of flyers in his backpack for whenever he had a chance to walk around. Before school started he had already managed to get inside the club as a waiter and help around the back with heavy loads. He quickly bulked up and started growing out of his childish body and face.
His grades fell during the school year and he slowly turned away from the very traditional values that his father had instilled in him as he saw tourists and their behavior. After he had kissed a woman for the first time he did feel guilty about it for a long time and promised himself to not sin. As time went on he was being approached by people he worked with to dabble into different dealings he declined to adamantly at first. But as he started going out more with new friends he made he also realized he needed more money and having quit his second job in order to have time to study he was quickly depleting his income. After he turned eighteen the man he rented from told him he could now find a real place for himself and so due to desperation Ibrahim began taking offers and selling drugs to customers and partygoers. If only he hadn’t made that decision, perhaps his life would have turned different, but only Allah knew that for him.
Soon his grades were so low the prospect of going to university had disappeared. By the time he graduated he had fully converted into a nightly routine, living a life most frowned upon and the only friends he had were drug dealers and addicts, the bouncer at the club he trained with and the bartender who taught him how to drink like a sailor. A year and a half passed in this way when one night he was approached by a man, surrounded by two massive guards, an offer he didn’t even consider refusing. Joining a group of people which were “like minded” seemed the correct thing. Until it turned out that Beyaz Kurtlar (“White Wolves”) was not just a name but a way of life. One under the moon that destroyed your body every full moon and made you roam like a beast outside the city.
At first Ibrahim felt empowered once he was turned, his demeanor changing to one of cockiness and menace, deals happening easier than before, travelling to buy better stock, being hired as a bodyguard and riches slowly filling his wallet. In this company he met Zeynep, a beautiful girl, daughter of a man who hired him for a few weeks. And like a dog in love, he followed her for months, moving his life to Istanbul where she lived and studied. When he wasn’t around her he worked more, easier with the higher population of the city and the higher demand, taking jobs he wouldn’t have before, wanting to buy a place and ask her father to marry her. She seemed to love him back, sharing secrets with him, inviting him to gatherings with her, as a date to an event from her university, though never to places her father was. He realized that but ignored it, falling more and more in love until a year later… when he read in the paper that her wedding to the son of a rich businessman was in two weeks’ time. And like wind, she was gone from his life faster than he could say her name. Or so she thought.
For the past five years he had learned to take what he wanted and that not much could be denied to him. His wolf nature made him even stronger than what his muscles showed him to be, his connections throughout the night world were spreading like a web and despite the rare dabbles with more dubious things than drugs and beatings, Büyük İbo always preceded him. And so he asked Zeynep to meet him and talk, her refusing to leave with him and abandon the engagement, saying that she always had used him for free protection against men and free drugs for her and her friends. Having a pretty face just hadn’t hurt when he had been whispering affectionate words. It had been quite some time since he had been turned and he did have a good control of his emotions at most times… but in that moment he couldn’t contain himself and lashed out, baring his teeth. He remembered her scream and then felt blood on his tongue before letting her go, his animal side happy with the action that would make her his because of what he would pass to her. Little did he know that on the next full moon she would attack him. Little did he know that after it his father would try to get him shot as she would lie that he had tried to take her against her will. He knew nothing at that time and could not predict that he would need to run.
So that is how he found himself on a flight to England, needing to escape as far away as possible. But it wasn’t far enough, as he came to find out just a month later. And so he applied for a visa and in a few months of hiding he had it and flew to America, an ocean separating him from the woman who had broken his heart and her father who wanted to break his skull.
Ibrahim has been in the United States for six years now. He found Greywood two years ago after trying to dabble in the underground of Phoenix unsuccessfully, being saved by a guy who turned out to be a witch and was heading to the city anyway. He got a small house in Mystic Grove and left it as it was at the front, fixing only the insides so that no one would ask questions as to where his money came from. He kept mostly to himself and applied in the fire station, needing to rebuild his life in a better way and try and use his skills for something good for a change. He sometimes leaves the city if he feels as if he is getting too close to someone, afraid his past may come and haunt him.

The Presocratics: Xenophanes
Intro
Our series started with the Milesians and their wonderment at existence. Criticized for having their heads stuck in the clouds, philosophers slowly started to move their gazes from the sky back down to earth. Whether we ultimately know what the universe is made of or not, the pressing concern for philosophy became the urge to know what is wise a life. This was a concern for Xenophanes of Colophon who became an influence for later Greek philosophers.
Xenophanes of Colophon
South of port Izmir, lies the scant remnants of the ancient city of Colophon. There began the life of the traveling philosopher, Xenophanes (570 – c. 475 BC). The Milesian school in our prior episodes ushered in for the West an attitude that demanded people explain the phenomena of the world with rational thought coming from one's own reasoning, not from inherited tradition. Like with those philosophers Xenophanes had to collect worldly knowledge from many people and sources. He traveled for most of his life and fortunately his text fragments that were left behind survived a little bit better than his predecessors, and they continued the focus on challenging myths, but they also allowed themselves the opportunity to speculate with a child-like wonder. From what we know Xenophanes lived a long life. "Already there are sixty-seven years tossing my speculation throughout the land of Greece, and from my birth there were twenty-five in addition to these..." When the Median General Harpagus conquered Colophon in 546 BC, who was famous for using earthwork ramps to surmount city walls, many Ionians escaped to areas of southern Italy and Sicily already occupied by Greek colonists. Xenophanes moved to many settlements in those areas including Elea, modern day Velia, which became famous for Eleatic philosophers Parmenides, Zeno, and Melissus. He also lived in Zancle, the modern day Sicilian port Messina, and Catana, modern day Catania, south of Mt. Etna. Throughout his travels Xenophanes would be able to compare local cultures and develop a philosophy of his own, and like his predecessors, traditional beliefs were criticized.
Limits of Human Knowledge
Like Anaximander's problem of positing an origin for all things Xenophanes looked for the answer to the question, similar to Homer ironically, "who is the God on whom hang all the other Gods, Goddesses, lands and oceans?" He aimed this question at the Greek belief that Gods could be born and live in a hierarchy like humans do. It made no sense to him. "Mortals believe that the gods are born and have human clothing, voice, and bodily form...beliefs that gods physically resemble humans are questionable...It is unholy for any of the gods to have a master...He always remains in the same place, moving not at all, nor is it fitting for him to come and go to different places at different times...God is one, greatest among gods and men, not at all like mortals in bodily form or thought...All of him sees, all of him thinks, all of him hears...But without effort he shakes all things by the thought of his mind." His monotheism was more efficient, but still hard to define. God moves with what's "fitting" but it's hard to say if this is a causal point of view of God acting in all movements in the universe with his thought, or something else. It didn't help that he also interchanged the singular God with the plural Gods in different texts. The advantage of not defining God with particular attributes is that one can study the phenomenon themselves and watch how they operate. It also allows one to avoid having to explain gaps in knowledge, and Xenophanes was okay with that. "No man has seen nor will there be anyone who knows the clear truth about the gods and about all the things I speak of. For even if a person should in fact say what has come to pass, nevertheless he himself does not know, but in all cases it is opinion that has been wrought." Truth is independent of our experience and imagination. Truth can be counterintuitive so human truths are always tentative. "Let these things be believed as resembling the truth...By no means did the gods intimate all things to mortals from the beginning, but in time, by searching, they discover better." This attitude towards knowledge and discovery opened up features of human perception that Heraclitus developed further. We can only perceive when we have something to compare to, and with scientific discoveries, they reshuffle the perception of everything else already known. "If god had not created yellow honey, they would say that figs are far sweeter."
The Importance of Wonder
With all this skepticism, the limitations of human knowledge couldn't stop the natural curiosity of philosophers, and Xenophanes was no different. He also had theories of the composition of the universe. “The upper limit of earth is seen here at our feet, in contact with air; below it stretches on and on...Everything that is born and growing is earth and water...For all things are from earth and into earth all things come to their end...The sea is the source of water and the source of wind; for without the great sea there would be no wind nor flowing rivers nor rain from the sky, but the great sea is the father of clouds and winds and rivers...stars come to be from burning clouds; being quenched every day they catch fire at night, like coals; their risings and settings are kindlings and quenchings...The sun comes from burning clouds...is composed of tiny sparks being gathered together from the moist evaporation, and gathering together the sun...There are many suns and moons according to the regions, sections, and zones of the earth, and at a certain time the disk falls into a section of the earth not inhabited by us, and just as if it were 'walking on nothing' it produces an eclipse...The sun goes on without end but it seems to circle around because of its distance."
The mind continues its curiosity, trying to figure out existence, each philosopher at a time. For many people, it is agitating to always question theories, so it takes a particular mind that agrees to the challenge. The fuel that propels the curiosity is the pleasure of wonder. Aristotle perceived how to maintain that sense of wonder. "People both now start and in the beginning started to do philosophy out of wonder. At first they wondered about the obvious difficulties, and then they gradually progressed to puzzle about the greater ones, for example, the behavior of the moon and sun and stars and the coming to be of the universe. Whoever is puzzled and in a state of wonder believes he is ignorant."
This is important, because wonder is the basis of development. The Romans conquered Greek civilization but were intellectually conquered. Horace said "Captive Greece captured her rude conqueror." The problem with predatory behaviours of conquering empires are that once you run out of stocks to exploit, all you are left with is the knowledge of how these goods were produced. You either drain resources or you learn from your defeated foe how they developed such amazing skills in the first place.
Anthropomorphism and projection
For religious people today, Freud's atheism appears dangerous, but in truth his insights are not new. When investigating transference with Freud, there is a therapeutic result when one catches yearning for a parental God figure to save us from our problems. We see the wasted energy and realize that we have to rely on ourselves much more in order to solve our problems. This increases self-esteem and reduces debasement. There's an inherent human tendency for insecurity, and to demand that society invent institutions of safety, including religions, and expect social cooperation. Some of this can't be avoided, for example medical care, but transference can go into extremes where flawed humans are worshiped, and they endlessly disappoint when they abuse their power position. Our worship can turn into rivalry when our need for help turns into a need to replace who we worship when our imitation of them increases. If we can't be God, we can represent God. Gods are a projection of powerful caregivers that we wish would exist to help us, and also are deities in positions we would like to occupy, but as with many Greek Gods, the projections includes human flaws. If we imitate the Gods, we may unconsciously be imitating their bad qualities as well. "Both Homer and Hesiod have ascribed to the gods all deeds which among men are matters of reproach and blame: thieving, adultery, and deceiving one another." Xenophanes deplored the Greek Gods who sometimes had less morals than many humans did. For him, God must move beyond the human form.
Freud - Love: https://rumble.com/v1gv5pd-love-freud-and-beyond.html
Violence and the Sacred - René Girard: https://rumble.com/v1gsnwv-the-origin-of-envy-and-narcissism-ren-girard.html
Historically we needed the Gods to look like us to feel that we were being taken care of, and our human concerns can only be believably supported if our caregivers resembled us. The fear of people who are different is similar to the fear of other predatory animals. If an entity is not cooperating with us, they must be competing with us. Even in politics, there is a temptation to vote on lines of human identity instead of policies and the reasons behind them. There is also a narcissistic pressure to force religious figures to appear in the same ethnicity of worshipers. Familiarity is comfortable and difference uncomfortable. Like a sports team where the members wear the same jersey, we naturally cooperate with those who look like us. "Ethiopians say that their gods are snub-nosed and black, Thracians that theirs are blue eyed and red haired...But if oxen or horses or lions had hands or were able to draw with their hands and accomplish the same works as men, horses would draw the figures of gods as resembling horses and oxen as resembling oxen, and each would make the gods’ bodies have the same bodily form as they themselves had."
The social aspect of religion and the worry of how to maintain individual happiness while conserving social harmony is intimated by Xenophanes. Around his time, the Lydians developed coinage and gained efficiencies of a monetary economy compared to the old barter economy. The results could be seen in increased wealth, but also envy, jealousy, rivalry and tyranny. When the people of Colophon, who normally lived an austere lifestyle, started imitating the Lydians, with their perfume and beautiful purple robes, Xenophanes looked at these luxuries as "unprofitable." He pointed out the danger of imitation in a way Plato would later say that "we should be justified in not admitting the mimetic poet into a well-ordered city..." The stories of the Gods that many poets would tell would be about desire, riches, lust, pride, envy and rivalry. These of course could be good lessons for the audience to learn, but many others would prefer to imitate those tempting behaviours. What Xenophanes valued was public harmony, order and wisdom. The competition for wealth was also mirrored in sports. He criticized athletic games for being over-rewarded, since the public good wasn't really developed. Winners in these games could sow envy and resentment. This hinted at the problem of wealth that Plato later explained of how a lavish city would need a large army to defend it's goods. The prideful "haves" and envious "have nots" are involved in "furious conflicts," as Xenophanes decribed in his first fragment.
On one hand there is a benefit of acquiring and saving money because of the obvious good results, but it can easily be that saving money becomes a way of gaining attention from others to feel superior. That kind of boasting attracts the wrong attention, resentment. Plato's Republic described Socrates' annoyance with the rich, their tunnel vision and how they were fond of money as "fathers of their children...They are hard..to be with because they are willing to praise nothing but wealth." The difficulty of this conundrum is still with us today. How are rewards to be distributed in a society? How much individual self-interest is too much?
Of course there are two sides to the argument. There are those who abuse their financial power, but having public officers lavished with rewards, instead of private citizens, has its own hypocrisy. Criticizing private wealth, and prescribing that it should be public wealth, has the possibility of corruption with those individuals working for the public good who are on the receiving end of this wealth. When people criticize the wealth of others, how can we be sure that they are they not unconsciously envious in some instances? In those cases, they are the predatory ones, as can be seen in kleptocracies where power literally equals consumption. The leaders end up with their hands in all of the cookie jars. All humans are individuals, and have the same temptations. Can a person truly be a public individual? Plato wanted a non-appetitive leader, or a leader who doesn't give into craving, to run his ideal state, but failed in every attempt to make it happen in real life. Leaders of the public have the same difficulty in letting go of their craving, and maybe even more temptation because of their powerful position and access to consumption. Plato and Xenophanes were trying to describe an alternate kind of pleasure for people to enjoy, that almost no one can maintain on a consistent basis. These leaders would have to enjoy doing things for the public good at the same level or more than for themselves. With Fragment 1, Xenophanes attempts to describe the proper balance between individual and society.
If you want to get drunk, do it properly!
"For now the floor is clean as are the cups and hands of all.
One puts on the woven garlands;
another passes along a fragrant ointment in a bowl.
The mixing bowl stands full of cheer
and another wine, flower fragrant in the jars, is at hand -
which says it never will give out.
In the midst frankincense gives forth its sacred scent,
and there is cold water, sweet and pure.
Golden loaves lie near at hand and the noble table
is loaded down with cheese and rich honey.
An altar in the centre is covered all about with flowers
while song and festive spirit enfold the house.
But first glad-hearted men must hymn the god
with reverent words and pure speech.
And having poured a libation and prayed to be able to do
what is right - for these are obvious -
it is not wrong to drink as much as allows any but an aged man
to reach his home without a servant's aid.
Praise the man who when he has taken drink brings noble deeds to light,
as memory and a striving for virtue bring to him.
He deals neither with the battles of Titans nor Giants
nor Centaurs, fictions of old,
nor furious conflicts - for there is no use in these.
But it is good always to hold the gods in high regard."
Fragment 1 of Xenophanes' banquet is a vivid meditation on how one has to balance both private enjoyment and appreciation of others. Here, the reverence of Gods can easily be seen as reverence for the community, since for Xenophanes, we are not to recount the "fictions of old" with all their squabbles. His banquet requires a clean floor, clean hands, sweet and pure water. There is fragrant ointment and frankincense. The alter is covered with flowers, and people speak with "reverent words and pure speech." After the appropriate praise, guests are allowed to drink enough to be influenced, but not so much that they become lame with drink. It's similar to Plato's Symposium where Socrates drank his companions under the table, maintained his composure and "spent the rest of the day in his ordinary fashion."

The message is consistent in that it's good to enjoy bread, cheese, wine and honey, but the conversation among the party goers should be devoid of envy, rivalry, and violence, imitated from the tales of the Greek Gods for example. We must be sensitive to the needs of others, instead of only focusing on our own. Our happiness is best protected when it does not conflict with another's happiness. Another way of looking at it, is that if you are around someone very happy, that person is more likely to leave you alone with your happiness. This then would extend to as many people as possible surrounding you. The more people surrounding you that are happy, the more peaceful your enjoyment will be in a human group. Rewards that are not fought over are divine, and a sign that one is following what is divine and proper in the universe.

(Small warning that this post contains swearing and mentions of death)
I wanted to write a page from Berat's journal as a coping mechanism for losing that drabble :'}
March 1, 2549
Haven't written in this old thing for quite a while now.
Today, they gave me a A.I, A.I Program Mint.
Why the hell did they do that?
I'm an ODST, I don't think ODST's are supposed to be given a A.I.
They told me that I need her because my mental state will go downhill.
No, I know myself well enough.
Enaya's only in a coma, thank the divines. She didn't lose her life unlike Mohana.
Poor Caveh, he didn't handle the news well when it was revealed Mohana would never wake up.
Those damn insurrectionists.
Then again, that group of insurrectionist isn't like the other insurrectionists I fought.
Their main goal?
Turmoil, despair, destruction... Basically anything negative.
Mohana was a medic, one doesn't kill a medic.
Except for those bastards...
I was relieved that Izmir and Enaya were both fine, except Enaya is in a coma.
Yekatrina told me that the chances of Enaya waking up are pretty good, but I should be prepared for when those chances drop.
I normally trust Yekatrina because she's the best damn medic I have ever met, but I won't this time. Enaya's a fighter. Even though she's a civilian, she's got that fire in her to keep going against all odds. The chances of her dying won't go up.
I'm going to have to stop writing now, Mint's pestering me about how I have a mission in one hour.
