Dunes & Waters, part 44
PART 1 • PREVIOUS PART • NEXT PART
They get the water.
Remus fills a glass bottle he steamed clean before leaving, corks it and puts a charm on it so it doesn’t spill. Sirius is already Padfoot, running in and out of the Nile, accosting passers-by’s and making children laugh. A little one gets prompted by his parents to ask Remus permission, then spends half an hour throwing a stick which Padfoot fetches each and every time. It’s a lovely day. They’re just north of Aswan, where the Nile historically began to flood before promanades were built and agriculture evolved into no longer needing the natures’ assistance.
There’s something sad about it, even while it’s amazing, how the people living there moved forward and harnessed what before was out of their control. Still, Remus can’t help but look at the water with a nostalgia for things which came and went before his time: for five thousand years, people came to the river for help with their crops. Prayed to it, made up gods for it. Now, the river is just that. Beautiful, but not much but a geological attraction.
“Your dog is very well behaved,” the family says when the child has had enough of running around with Padfoot. “What did you use to train him?”
“He came to me like that,” Remus tells them because anything else that springs to mind is not appropriate for polite conversation.
He sits on the grass. Padfoot lays at his feet, head resting on his thigh, eyes closed. The Nile is in front of them, the New Aswan City Amphitheater behind.
“The Nile was a way into the afterlife, you know?” Remus tells the dog. It focuses on him. “A causeway from life to death. Where Osiris drowned, but also where all life comes from.”
A soft huff from the dog, and Remus knows Sirius well enough to know it means keep going. Tell me more.
“I think I know what the potion does,” Remus pets through the dark mane on the dogs head, “I’ve got the translation… not fully, but I’ve got the gist of it. She wrote about control, and regaining it. When the moon is full, before you are made into beast, drink. The gods will speak to Osiris for you. If he’s so willing, forever the night will be yours to command.”
The dog pushes its mouth into Remus.
“I don’t know why I didn’t tell you. No, that’s a lie. You can always tell anyway. We should write to Kingsley. You’re done with what you were supposed to do. And I’ve been keeping you here, pointlessly. Keeping you from going home. Just… well, the translation was something I could still pretend I needed your help with, but it’s just unfair on you, and I’m sorry. I really, I am, Sirius -”
He’s cut off. The dog becomes a man. There is no one around them, but Remus still panics.
Hands on his face, Sirius stops him from talking.
“I’m not done with you yet,” he says. “You think I didn’t realise we were almost finished? Remus, you’re not keeping me here. I’m staying here, whatever my conditions of release were, because I want to be.” Sirius kisses so softly like it could show he’s honest and Remus breaks, just a little bit, because he fretted for nothing. They still have time. Not much of it, but it’s there. Sirius isn’t leaving.
“The translation. Tell me.”
“Follow in the footsteps of Osiris, beloved one, but beware. There is a price to be paid for chance of freedom - the price of rebirth is wading through death. If gods do not favour in your way, the path of return will be lost.”
They sit in silence, Sirius with the frown between his eyebrows he always gets when deep in thought. “So it is about the transformation.”
“It is. I think… well, I think it’s meant to make it so the werewolf doesn’t lose control. It sounds like once you drink, you stay in your mind forever.”
“It sounds like it’s warning you of something. The price of rebirth is death,” Sirius speaks cautiously. Moves himself away to get a better look at Remus. “And I checked, red lotus and acacia both symbolise rebirth. You weren’t planning on drinking it, were you?”
And Remus knows better than to lie, so he stays quiet.
“Remus. My love. Darling. You can’t be… this is an ancient potion we got the recipe for out of an artefact. It’s not tested. Surely you know I wouldn’t let you.”
“You can’t be surprised that I would be tempted.”
“Tempted is one thing,” Sirius runs frustrated fingers through his hair. “But to actually consider it? It’s not worth it. Even if it wasn’t for the fact that it could be a very old practical joke a couple thousand years in the making, it literally has a warning on the label. The path to return will be lost, you said.”
“That could mean anything.”
“Or it could mean that you die, Remus.”
They both sit with the words. The sun softly sets over the Nile.
“I won’t make it if it’s for anything else than research,” Sirius says. “You can’t make me contribute to you hurting yourself.”
Remus lays his head on Sirius’ shoulder, half expecting to be pushed off. Instead, a hand cradles through his hair, fingers get lost in curls frizzy from the day spent by a late body of water.
“Fine,” he agrees, because he can’t imagine a world in which he’d willingly push Sirius away.
There will be ways to test it, he thinks. To check whether it works, what it does, what the warning really means. If death is, in fact, a condition of the potion and rebirth just the optional outcome.

We only have a few hours, so listen carefully.
If you're hearing this, you're already in danger. Sadie, Helen and I might be your only chance.
Go to the school.
Find the locker.
I won't tell you which school, or which locker, because if you're the right person, you'll find it.
The combination is 13/32/ 33. By the time you finish listening, you'll know what the numbers mean.
Just know that the story we're about to tell you isn't completely yet.
How it ends depends on you.
Tme most important thing: when you open the package and find what's inside, don't keep longer than a week. Sure, it'll be tempting.
I mean, it will grant you almost unlimited power. But if you possess it too long, it will consume you. Learn its secrets quickly and pass it on.
Hide it for the next person, the way we did for you.
Then be prepared for your life to get very interesting.
Okay, Sadie and Helen are telling me to stop stalling and get on with the story. Fine. I guess it started in London, the night our dad blew up the British museum.
My name is Carter kane. I'm fourteen and my home is a suitcase.
You think I'm kidding? Since I was eight years old, my dad and I have travelled the world. I was born in LA but my dad's an archaeologist, so his work takes him all over.
Mostly we go to Egypt, since that's his speciality. Go to a bookstore, find a book about Egypt; there's a pretty good chance it was written by Dr. Julius kane.
You want to know how the Egyptians pulled the brains out of mummies, or built the pyramids, or cursed king tuts tomb? My dad is your man.
Of course, there are other reasons why my dad moved around so much, but i didn't know hso secret back then.
I didn't go to school, my dad home-schooled me, if you can even call it 'home'-schooling when you don't even have a home. He sort of taught me whatever he thought was important, so I learnt a lot about Egypt and basketball stats and my dad's favourite musicians.
I read alot too -pretty much anything I could get my hands on, from dad's history books to fantasy novels- because I spent alot of time sitting around in hotels and proportions and dig sites in foreign countries where i didn't know anybody.
My dad was always telling me to put the book down and play some ball. You ever try to start a game of pick up basketball in Aswan, Egypt? It's not easy.
Anyway, my dad trained me early to keep all my possessions in a single suitcase that fits in an aeroplanes overhead compartment. My dad packed the same, exept he was allowed an extra working bag for his archaeology tools.
Rule number one: I was not allowed to look into his workbag. That's a rule I never broke until the day of the explosion.
It happened on Christmas Eve. We were in London for visitation day with sadie. Well, her, and her friend helen, but more on her later.
See, dads only allowed two days of the year with sadie - one in the winter, one in the summer - because our grandparents hate him.
After our mom died, her parents (our grandparents) had this big court battle with dad. After six lawyers, two fistfights and a near attack with a spatula (don't ask), they won the right to keep sadie with them in England.
She was only six, two years younger than me, and they couldn't keep us both -at least that was their excuse for not taking me.
So sadie was raised as a British schoolkid, and I travelled around with my dad.
We only saw sadie twice a year, which was fine by me.
[Shut up Sadie- yes, im getting to that part, where was I?]
Right, Helen. She usually tagged along on visitation day.
Helen was Sadie's best friend and neighbour who usualy hung out with her. Anywhere, anytime, those two were connected by the hip.
the first time in met her, it was visitation day when I was ten, and she was nine.
Helen nervously asked our grandparents if she could tag along because her mother was working late that day, to which they and my father agreed.
I dont remember where exactly we went, but i do remember us talking about mythology and the gods, which was fun back then.
Now, it was just awful foreshadowing.
She was still my favourite part of the visitation day, and sometimes it felt like we were the siblings, not me and sadie.
So, anyway, my dad and I had just flown into Hearthrow after a couple delays. It was a drizzly, cold afternoon. The whole taxi ride into the city, my dad seemed kind of nervous.
Now, my dad is a big guy. You wouldn't think anything could make him nervous. He has dark brown skin like mine, piercing brown eyes, a bald head and a goatee, so he looks like a buff evil scientist.
That afternoon he worse his cashmere winter coat and his best brown suit, the one he used for public lectures.
Usually, he exudes so much confidence that he dominated any room he walked into, but sometimes -like that afternoon - I saw another side to that I didn't really understand.
He kept looking over his shoulder like we were being hunted.
'Dad?' I said as we were getting off the A40. 'What's wrong?'
'No sign of them,' he muttered. Then he must've realised he'd spoken aloud, because he looked at me kinda startled. 'Nothing Carter, everything is fine.'
Which bothered me because my dads a terrible liar. I always knew when he was hiding something, but i also knew no amount of pestering would get the truth out of him.
He was probrably trying to protect me, though from what I didnt know. Sometimes I wondered if he had some dark secret in his past, some old enemy following him, maybe; but the idea seemed ridiculous. Dad was just an archaeologist.
The other thing that troubled me: Dad was clutching his workbag. Usually when he does that, it means we're in danger.
Like the time gunmen stormed out hotel in Cairo. I heard shots coming from the lobby and ran downstairs to check up on my dad. By the time I got there, he was just calmly zipping up his workbag while three unconscious gunmen hung by their feet from the chandelier, their robes falling over their heads so you could see their boxershorys.
Dad claimed not to have witnessed anything, and in the end the police blamed a freak chandelier malfunction.
Another time, we got caught in a riot in Paris.
My dad found the nearest parked car, pushed me into the back seat and told me to stay down. I pressed myself against the floorboards and kept my eyes shut tight.
I could hear my dad in the driver's seat, rummaging in his bag, mumbling to himself as the mob yelled and destroyed things outside.
A few minutes later he told me it was safe to get up. Every other car had been overturned and set on fire. Our car had been freshly washed and had several twenty-euro notes had been tucked under the windshield wipers.
Anyway, I've come to respect the bag. It was our good luck charm. But when my dad kept it close, it usually meant we were going to need good luck.
We drove through the city centre, headling east towards my grandparents flat. We passed the golden gates of Buckingham palace, the big stone column in Trafalgar square. London is a pretty cool place but after you've travelled for so long, all cities start to blend together.
Other kids i meet sometimes say 'wow, you're so lucky you get to travel so much.' But it's not like we spend out time sightseeing or have a lot of money to travel in style. We've stayed in some pretty rough places, and we hardly stay anywhere longer than a few days.
Most of the time it feels like we're fugitives rather than tourists.
I mean, you wouldn't think my dads work was dangerous. He does lectured on topics like 'can egyptian magic really kill you?' and 'favorite punishments in the egyptian underworld' and other stuff that most people wouldn't care about. But, like I said, there's that other side to him.
He's always very cautious, checking every hotel room before he lets me walk into it. He'll dart into a museum, take a few notes and rush back out again as if he's afraid to be caught on the security cameras.
One time, when I was younger, we raced across the Charles de Gaulle airport to catch a last minute flight, and dad didn't relax until the plane left off the ground. I asked him point blank what he was running from, and he looked at me like I just pulled the pin out of a grenade.
For a second i was scared he might actually tell me the truth.
Then he said : 'Carter, it's nothing.' As if 'nothing' were the most terrible thing in the world.
After that, I decided maybe it was better not to ask questions.
My grandparents, the fausts, live in a housing development near canary wharf, right on the banks of the river Thames.
The taxi let us off at the curb, and my dad asked the driver to wait.
We were halfway up the walk when das frozen. He turned and looked behind us.
'What?' I asked.
Then I saw the man in the trenchcoat.
He was across the street, leaning against a big red tree. He was barrel shaped, with skin the colour of roasted coffee. His coat and black pinstriped suit looked expensive. He had long braided hair and wore a black fedora pulled down low over his dark brown glasses.
He reminded me of a jazz musician, one that dad would always drag me to in a concert.
Even though I couldn't see his eyes, I got the impression he was watching us. He might have been an old friend or colleague of dad's. No matter where we went, dad was always running into people he knew.
But it did seem strange that he was waiting here, outside my grandparents'.
And he didn't look happy.
'Carter,' my dad said 'go on ahead
'But-'
'Get your sister and Helen. I'll meet you back at the taxi.'
He crossed the street towards the man in the trenchcoat, which left me with two choices: follow my dad, and see what happens, or do what I was told.
I decided on the less dangerous path.
I went to retrieve my sister.
Before I could even knock, sadie opened the door for her and Helen.
'Late as usual,' she said.
She was holding her cat, muffin, who'd been a "going away gift" from dad six years ago.
Muffin never seemed to get older or bigger. She had fuzzy yellow and black fur like a miniature leopard, alert yellow eyes and ears that were too tall for her head. A silver egyptian pendant dangled from her collar.
She didn't look anything like a muffin, but said had been lttle when she named her, so I guess you had to cut her some slack.
They both hadn't changed much since last summer.
[As I'm recording this, Sadie's standing next to me, glaring, while helen is looking at me expectantly, so I better be careful how I describe them]
You'd never guess sadie was my sister. First of all, she'd been living in england so long, she has a British accent. Second, she takes after our mom, who was white, so sadies skin is much lighter than mine.
She has straight, caramel coloured hair, not exactly blonde but not brown, which she usualy dyes with steaks of bright colours. That day it had red streaks down the left side.
Her eyes are blue. Im serious. Blue eyes, just like our moms'.
Shes only twelve, but she's exactly as tall as me, which is really annoying. She was chewing gum as usual, dressed for her day out with dad in battered jeans, a leather jacket and combat books, like she was going to a concert and wanted to stomp on some people. She had headphones dangling from her neck just in case we bored her.
Helen however, looked so drastically the same and yet so dissimilar to my sister.
She had the same caramel hair as sadie, but her hair was curly. Only the roots and tips of her hair were dyed red. Her eyes were a shrinking prismarine green, that seemed to hypnotise anyone who stared at them too long.
Her tanned skin looked a few shades lighter in winter, but whatever season it was, she always kept that , rare, warm smile that always made people make her want to laugh, just to see it.
From what I'd heard, before her father passed, she always wore that bright smile that made her teachers awe until she was five. Her father passed, and it took several months of trust and friendship for one to see it.
I remembered her having freckles the last time we visited, but now in the winter they turned faint. Her nose was already red from the cold, and her hands were buried in the pockets of her grey hoodie.
She was thirteen , just a year younger than me, but she was just a bit shorter than me and sadie.
She smiled and waved at me, her hair shielding her face like a curtain: 'hi Carter...'
[Okay, none of them hit me, so I guess i did an okay job at describing them]
'Our plane was late' I told sadie, and nodded to helen as a greeting.
She popped a bubble, rubbed muffins head and tossed the cat inside: 'gran, were going out!'
'See you later Mrs. Faust!' Helen added.
From somewhere in the house, grandma Faust said something i couldn't make out, probably 'don't let them in!'
Sadie closed the door and regarded me as if I was a dead mouse her cat just dragged in: 'so, here you are again.'
'Yep.'
'Come on then,' she sighed. 'Let's get on with it, me and helen have a sleepover planned after this.'
That's the way she was. No "hi, how you been the last six months? So glad to see you!" or anything. But that was okay with me.
When you only see eachother twice a year, it's like you're distant cousins rather than siblings. We had absolutely nothing in common exept our parents.
'Sadie, you should be nicer to your brother...i mean, it's just one day-' I heard Helen whisper quietly to Sadie as we trudged down the steps.
Sadie cut her off with a scoff and an eye roll, gently nudging her: 'I could, but i don't have too, and If I don't have to, I won't.'
From then on, I ignored their conversation. I was thinking how sadie smelled like a combination of old people's house and bubblegum when she stopped so abruptly I ran into her.
'Who's that?' She asked.
I'd almost forgotten about the dude in the trenchcoat. He and my dad were standing across the street next to the big tree, having what looked like a serious argument. Dads back was turned, so i couldn't see his face, but he gestured with his hands like he does when he's agitated.
'Dunno,' I said. 'He was there when we pulled up.'
'He looks familiar.' Sadie frowned Luke she was trying to remember. 'Come on.'
'I think we should wait in the cab, sadie. It's probably safer' Helen gestured to my dad and the trenchcoat guy and how their argument looked like it was about to get violent.
But her words had no use. Sadie was already on the move. Instead of going straight across the street, she dashed across the sidewalk for half a block, ducking behind cars, then crossed to the opposite street and crouched under a low stone wall.
She started sneaking towards our dad. I didn't have much choice but to follow her example, even though it made me feel kind of stupid.
'Six years in England,' I muttered 'and she already thinks she's James bond'
Sadie swatted me without looking back and kept on creeping forward.
Helen followed her with a hint of reluctance and annoyance, seemingly not wanting to get into trouble.
A couple more steps and we were right behind the big dead tree. I could hear my dad on the other side , saying, '-have to, Amos. You know it's the right thing.'
'No,' said the other man, who must've been Amos. His voice was deep and even -very insistent. His accent was american. 'If I don't stop you, Julius, they will. The Per Ankh is is shadowing you.
Sadie turned to me and mouthed the words 'Per what?' while Helen counted on her fingers, trying to list all the languages she knew that could have been used.
[What do you mean you didn't do that, I literally saw you count!?- yeahh now you remember, of course... anyway-]
I shook my head, mystified. 'Let's get out of here,' I whispered, because I figured we'd be spotted any minute and get get in serious trouble. Sadie, of course, ignored me.
'They don't know my plan,' my father was saying. 'By the time they figure it out-'
'And the children?' Amos asked. The hairs stood up on the back of my neck. 'What about them?'
'I've made arrangements to protect them,' my dad said. 'Besides, if i don't do this, we're all in danger. Now, back off'
'i can't, Julius.'
'Then it's a duel you want?' Dads tone turned deadly serious. 'You could never beat me, Amos.'

Where Danger Finds me, it Follows with Tides - 4

Likes doves in the wind ch4
Word count: 1.1k
Relationships: Wednesday Addams x Reader (she/they)
Warnings: threats (duh)
A/N: I've been waiting to make that Jersey joke, BTW this is slow burn, cat and mouse type stuff, so you gonna wait for a kiss like after confession. Thank yall for the support

"You know there’s a thing called the internet; you remind me of my uncle, always resorting to a damn book." You groaned. The sound of a squeaky chair spinning was starting to annoy Wednesday.
"Your uncle seems like a highly ingenious person. You wouldn’t be able to acquire factual information about such beast online." Wednesday educated.
The library was empty since it was past curfew; there was only a dim yellowish light illuminating a small radius, and it flickered constantly. The book in front of her was decrepit, with curses written in it, names of older holders marked on the corners of its pages, pages ripped, and half of the information in the book was crossed off. This was no help. The raven closed the book with vigor.
"Get up; we need something different," Wednesday commanded. You complied like a dog, she was curious why.
"Like the internet?" You asked while following her.
"No, a diary."
"Oh, my gods, we don’t have time to write about your hatred for the world." I want to get this A as much as you do."
Wednesday's face softened in confusion, plural? She brushed it off. The two of you paused at a statue of the beloved patron, Mr. Poe.
"Wednesday, what is this?"
"Be silent for once." She really didn’t mean that. The sound of two snaps and gears maneuvering echoed throughout the hall. The statue revealed its secrets.
"You learn new things every day." You followed the evil-thinking girl down a stairway.
Wednesday rummaged in her black leather satchel for a flashlight. When she acquired the gadget and flipped it on, you complained.
"Geez, now I can’t see."
"How? It was dark."
"My," you emphasized the word, "eyes adjusted."
She nodded for a second, and you two finally hit the floor.
"What the heck is this?" you asked.
"The nightshade’s hideout."
"Nightshades?"
"Your incompetence for knowledge is appalling." Wednesday walked to a photograph of a man covered head to toe in silky brown hair. She removed the photo, revealing a safe, and began to work on the code."
"I’ve only been here for a year, and during that year I was working."
"Are you not 16?"
"I am." You reassured
"That tattoo on your maxillary bone said otherwise." Wednesday was stalling with this safe on purpose. You noticed.
"It’s not a tattoo; it's, uh, a birthmark."
"A perfect eye of Ra is a birthmark."
"How’d you know?"
"Where are you from?" She avoided the simple question.
"Wow, Addams, you actually want to get to know me. I’m surprised." You teased.
"Forget I said anything then."
"Fine, fine, Egypt, a couple of miles off Aswan. You?"
"Jersey."
You chuckled "That makes a lot of sense now."
She rolled her eyes. Finally, she cracked the code. On opening the safe, there were a small variety of books. She pulled out a brown, beaten-up leather one.
"Is that it?" You inspected the book behind her shoulder, maybe six inches away from her. Why didn’t she feel disdain? She flipped through the pages, which contained information on mounds of different creatures. You stopped her for a second.
"Let’s do black dogs; they're native and easier things to find. They eat sheep, don’t they?"
She hummed, "Death omens, you have taste."
"Ooo, we’re on compliments now?"
"Quit." she snapped.
You walked Wednesday back to her dorm room and barely spoke a word to each other. You enjoyed it—quietude even. Once you reached her dorm, you said goodnight to each other. Oh, if you could replay such a moment, you’d do it over and over.
──────
Wednesday on the other hand, was caught in her somewhat vulnerable moments; the last person she wanted to be caught by was Enid and that ludicrous hand.
"Was that who I think—" The blonde girl piqued
"Shut up."
"You still think of them as rivals?"
"What are you doing here? You said you’d be at Yoko’s."
"Ms. Fisher caught us sneaking around and sent us back to our dorms." Enid complained, "Lucky you that you got to sneak around with Y/n to have a little reading date."
"It wasn’t a date, and don’t say that again." Wednesday's dander thickened.
"Oh, I wait to hear what Bianca would say about this." Enid performed an English accent. "The backstabber, that wrenched Addams, betrayal!"
"Go to sleep, Enid, or I’m going to declaw you right this instant."
──────
Bianca practically threw her tray on the table.
"Geez B, are you still mad about Ms. Fishy Fish?" Yoko jabbed
Bianca avoided the question to interrogate Wednesday. "I heard you had fun the other night, Wens."
Wednesday turned to Enid with dagger eyes and stabbed her food. "It was mandatory, Barclay."
"I told you to stay away from them Wednesday." Bianca reprimanded
"I wasn't informed I took orders from you, but you sound like Xavier."
Bianca grimaced, almost the whole table did.
"Don't speak about that bossy stalker," Enid said.
Wednesday's attention was on something new. This bird has been staring at her since she entered the quad, it looked like a hawk. Like some madman, the black-haired girl left the group and started to head to the tall walkways where the bird was located. She ignored the calls of her friends and trekked on. only to be greeted by the bird flying away and by you. There you sat, unbothered, feeding birds. She couldn't take her eyes off you; you looked so peaceful and surrounded by the life of different varieties, the sun shining on your face practically kissing you gently. Finally, you gave her attention instead of the birds.
"You spooked me." You chuckled
"Why are you here?"
You laughed again; she loved the way your sharp teeth showed when you laughed. "I could ask the same thing."
"Well, I asked first."
"Okay, that's fair; I'm feeding the birds in peace."
She noted the way you said 'in peace'. Were you still happy and at peace even though she broke it?
"Now you, why are you here?"
Why couldn't she speak? Of course, the truth is that she's chasing a bird, but a lie would be that she's looking for you, and that's worse.
"I was strolling around."
"Wednesday Addams strolling around never thought you went places without a purpose."
"I have free will."
"I admire that."
Why did she warm up to the praise from you?
"But I know that's a lie."
Why do you have to make everything difficult for her?
"I came to see you about the project."
You knew that was a lie, too.
"Get up and let's go; I want to get this done already," she commanded.
"Don't you have class? I didn't know you were that devious." Again, you got up quickly to follow her.
"I repeat, I have free will. Didn't you hear?"
You laughed, realizing that this girl had just quoted you.

This is something that I made last week but didn't bother finishing because I was lazy or doing other drawings.
Anyways, this drawing is of my Jojo OC's Stand [Flogging Molly] having special abilities and skills similar to [Star Platinum], I wanted to focus on other things besides "Drunken Lullaby" and limb blades.
Abilities:
- Gut feelings A unique trait they possessed since birth but has tragically been ignored by Medea for the majority of Part 3. They have a decent enough intuition that helps them detect something wrong or right, as such they become defensive and hostile towards anything or anyone posing as a threat to Medea's well-being but becomes friendly and calm when around someone they trust or have good vibes. I.e. They fully trust Polnareff due to sensing his good vibes and for getting rid of J. Geil: Link - X Ray Goggles An ability they also possessed since birth, while not used quite as often as they should, it's a very convenient ability used for spying and eavesdropping. The "goggles" takes on the form of [Flogging Molly]'s hands in a "eye goggle" gesture. I.e. it was once used to spy on the Crusaders in an Egyptian hospital in Aswan: Link
- Retractable arm blades A physical trait they've gained post-Arrow piercing, it allows them to summon blades from out their arms and use them to maim, cut, hack, and slash opponents and/or obstacles, they also summon blades with their legs for extra damage. Of course, they can be used for other things such as chopping fruit, the splattering in the image above isn't blood, it's strawberry jell-o lol
- Drunken Lullaby Their main ability and element they also gained post-Arrow piercing, it's a corrosive poison that's discharged from their aforementioned limb blades, which could scar enemies at best or kill them at worst, they also use it for the purpose of dosing people's food, drinks, and/or medication for assassination attempts, but can be called back to cancel it out. It is named after the song "Drunken Lullabies" by Flogging Molly.
- Seven Deadly Sins This is a bit of a small spoiler to my fanfic, but "Seven Deadly Sins" is a secret ability they gained during the events of "The Hierophant and Sinner". It reflects the cardinal vices Medea's committed in DIO's name and takes a lot of energy out of her and her Stand, hence why it's sparsely used. But when it is used, it lays devastation to their foe which powers up each time a Sin is chanted, from the least deadly to worst deadly sin. It is named after the song "Seven Deadly Sins" by Flogging Molly.
Medea King and her Stand belongs to me

🥰 anka and i are sharing a prion disease right now so we're rewatching the JJBA OVA. and okay. maybe it was the weed but i think it might be... i think it's my favourite thing ever made. that's ever existed. for all time. it's my favourite thing that exists. my favourite thing that Is. it really does makes me feel exactly like the ending of HEAT... LOL and i'm serious about this. it's like a stun gun or like being sandblasted where i'm shot outside of my body helpless to what's happening. horrible feeling and i love it very much.
and i feel soooooooo fucking VINDICATED because i dug deep into japanese forums + blogs and found people celebrating it ;__; there are discussions from this year (2024) even! people agree that it's gorgeous and that if you're going to watch (or even read) any version, it should be this one. that it rewards you on rewatches... which is true. every time i see it, i find something new, some extra bit of care that goes toward the structure of the mood. so many subtle movements in the acting, so much elegance to the balance of exposition in the dialogue. mainly in the japanese version, but it's not like it's lost in the english dub, just different. the voice actors did an amazing job with tone— notably there's this shaky tightness in Jotaro's voice during moments of fear/stress that enhances his expressions, actions.
i found people talking about the tension, acting, a wonderful review on the use of shifting, dynamic lighting throughout the OVA, the way the sound design— engineered by Skywalker Sound with score by a very young (~19) Marco D'Ambrosio— fills in SO MUCH for the animation with tasteful specificity in implying things like unique weight for footsteps, for Avdol's rings, or how the sound of Geb is like a strange layered scream. and fortunately found many people talking about being in awe of n'doul's humanity and how he has serious rizz lol and that he, in any version, is the only serious sobering moment of the glory gods... WAAAAH then i come on twitter or whatever and people are like "looks like shit, worst fight in the thing," and it's like jesus h. christ get a LIFE. i'm sorry you were tricked and lied to, but bad taste can be fixed if you just open your heart a little.
i do not feel moved whatsoever to watch the rest of the TV series (i made it up to the hunting episode of DIU.) something can be faithful and also a major downgrade, by intending to be as faithful as possible, misses the elements that make it what it is. besides, modern anime looks like real shit right now and i won't force myself through it solely because it exists. but i love this adaptation. i would rather see a beautiful interpretation that prioritises an effective, effecting mood, that tries to compromise with purpose and synthesise the source into what an animated version— the short film that this is— can do for it. what the form can heighten. there are little movements, upticks in speed or anxious stillness. the breathless timing and gravity of jotaro touching down and star platinum ripping right out of him like a major leaguer performing another major league hit. n'doul reacting to iggy, jumping slightly while kneeling. jotaro wiping off his fingers with a hanky and then rubbing them together. the entire scene with polnareff on the crates. oh GOD and the opening with the inverted sun... the cane... the cane scene cannot Not destroy you, be honest.
why did they include the red granite obelisk, notably from aswan, one of which was at one time commissioned by hadrian for his boyfriend antinous who drowned in the nile? that didn't have to be there, but isn't it beautiful? (and they put the eye hieroglyph right where we can see it... uuugh.) never mind the actual canonical content, with jotaro and n'doul mutually captivated, delighted, by each other's skill until the end. it's so painful knowing the inevitable outcome but it still somehow sneaks up on you with the way it's paced and i love to be rocked by it every time. the only guy ever to be spared on purpose— respecting him that much! and the respect is mutual! jesus, his monologue! he's the only one to be mourned. THE only one to be buried. by hand. alone. the fight begins under high noon sun and the burial completes at dusk. he's 17. fuck me.
i love when a story is never allowed to fully wrap up into the typical "and it was all worth it!" sort of vibe, which, in a way, is what happens, but it never rises to the point where... where that positivity matches the intensity of what was shown to you previously, or that those losses are meant to be forgotten in the wake of righteousness. and as far as i can recall, this is something araki has perfected over time. i'm thinking about the brutal bit in DIU with josuke carrying? dragging? okuyasu, and the particulars of kira's fate. but i'm REALLY thinking of VA, with giorno &co. in the office, and the epilogue. and then obviously SO. and then SBR. and JJL. this approach, the bittersweet heartache or outright mourning, has become a precise weapon and i can see the through-line from SDC. now that i've watched HEAT i can see why araki said that he cries every time he watches it. it's wrenching. and a big part of that is that you don't necessarily expect it because of genre or style flourishes, and that's really special. to be caught unawares, because you were already caught, you've been caught this whole time and now you have to take it.
i now know that yeah. yes. this is The definition of a special interest. because i have to, must, rotate this object in my head compulsively and purposefully so i can see every angle and crevice. i intuitively understand that i shouldn't be so bowled over and bitchy about it after so many years, sooo many years, but i can't help it! you like what you like and this is the benchmark. it pains me that it is so finite. that i've confusingly hung my heart on something that no one on earth could give one (1) solitary fuck about, and therefor there is an abrupt end to material. so i AM left rotating shapes in my head sussing out indentations in the form. kinda crazy. but fighting against it is maybe more punishing in a way.
this fight was chosen as the opening to the OVA because it's one where everyone is present. this fight was also going to be the entirety of the OVA, but araki liked it so much he requested more episodes 🥰💕

Hola, a friend and I are thinking about doing a sightseeing trip to Madrid in the middle of november. Do you have some insider tips what we should see? :)
hi anon, yes of course !!!
so, one thing about madrid, it isn't a monument city but a walking city. i'd say walking through the city center, centered around the two main squares, puerta del sol and plaza mayor (both also massive tourist hotspots so expect a ton of people). just walking around that area, around arenal street, calle mayor (main street), carretas street and others is enough to get a feel of the oldest part of the city (also called 'madrid the los austrias' or 'austrian madrid', when spain was ruled by the habsburgs). it's my favourite area honestly, alongside the barrio de las letras, which you can get to walking or in a few metro stops. its name translates to 'neighborhood of the letters' because a ton of writers lived here, and you can find phrases from spanish literary classics engraved on the streets, it's lovely.
apart from that central area, other cool spots i would really recommend you should check out is gran vía (busiest street in the city, it literally translates to 'broadway', it has a ton of theatres as well), malasaña (hip arts district, love the vibe, also it's so beautiful and there's always stuff going on, really nice place to go out at night as well), chueca (next to malasaña, it's the queer district!!! also very beautiful), debod (my actual favourite place in the city!!!!!! it's this hill that holds an egyptian temple - the temple of debod - that was gifted to spain after the aswan campaign, you can visit it and also the views from the city from here are lovely, you can find the best sunset here), el rastro (the largest flea market in the country, you can visit it every sunday, you can find anything here. also nearby, in the cuesta de moyano, there's a book fair also open only on sundays), retiro park (our main park, really pretty, it's very nice to just chill; it also has a lake you can row on, and cool statues and stuff), and the royal palace (it's open to the public if that's your thing, but the area around it is very very nice, i always end up here when i hang out with my friends).
now let's talk museums!!!! madrid has a ton of museums, i'll tell you the ones i recommend but depending on what you're looking for there's probably something for you. important to note is that at least the prado and the reina sofía museums are free everyday one hour before they close !!!!!! important !!!!!! check in case there's other museums that do this, but i'm unsure, i think it's those two and maybe the thyssen?
so. the main three art museums in madrid are the prado museum (the counterpart of the louvre, that sorta vibe), the reina sofía museum (our modern art museum, only stuff from picasso onwards), and the thyssen museum (ngl i haven't been here, it's a private museum made out of the collection of this one countess). all of them (more or less) are in the prado boulevard, which is also very nice to walk by so it's always lovely to go there even if you don't enter the museums. nearby there's also the national archaeological museum, my personal favourite one.
other smaller but also cool museums that i love are the madrid history museum (the facade is insane, also has tons of cool maps of the city), romanticism museum (an old romanticism-era palace with romanticism-era paintings and other stuff), cerralbo museum (underrated af; it is the personal collection of this one noble, the building itself is absolutely insane), and the sorolla museum (if you like sorolla this is your place!).
(i'm nearly done i swear)
if you have time and want to visit a nearby city, my recommendations are: alcalá de henares (really close to madrid, it has the second oldest university in spain, with a medieval feel to it, it also has the madrid archaeological museum - it was a roman foundation under the name of complutum - and most importantly, it's known for being the birthplace of miguel de cervantes, writer of don quijote!!!! you can visit his house, it's now a museum :), el escorial (deep in the mountains, it has the monastery of el escorial, maximum icon of spanish renaissance, it was the winter palace of the monarchy and holds the royal crypt, where most of spanish monarchs have been buried), toledo (oh if you love medieval cities you'll love this one. it was the first capital of spain, and it is most known for being the city that during the medieval times had christians, muslims and jews living peacefully. there's tons of churches, mosques and synagogues to visit, and it is very well preserved, with narrow steep cobblestone streets, cannot recommend it enough), and segovia (toledo is to the south of madrid, and segovia to the north! it is most famous for its roman aqueduct, the best preserved and highest in the country, and it also has a ton of historical buildings, including its alcázar, a palace that inspired the sleeping beauty castle !!!!!). also it's not a city but there's a national park in madrid, the sierra de guadarrama national park and it's super beautiful, it's this lovely mountainous area perfect for hiking or just chilling, and depending on when in november you come, you might see snow!
as a final warning!! i don't know where you're from but in november madrid is probably colder than you are expecting so make sure to pack some extra layers just in case !!!
#ask#madrid#sorry for the long post anon. but you asked for it#(but again. sorry)#hope this is helpful!#and if you have something in particular in mind of some kind of activity or a kind of place of visit#let me know so i can further help#also about guadarrama !!!#the national park is just part of the mountain range of the guadarrama mountains#and personally i haven't been to the park but i've been to other places in the guadarrama mountains and i can't recommend them enough#just going anywhere in the mountains is <3333#i would recommend the hayedo de montejo (the southernmost beech forest in europe!)#the boca del asno which is a popular picnic spot#navacerrada is the most famous ski town. maybe it will be opened in november but i'm unsure? there's cool trekking paths tho and it's easy#to get to via public transport#also !!!! la pedriza !!! which is this cool mountain (?) group of mountains (?) with these big rock formations that look funny#and there's a ton of mountain goats there as well.#anddd in the town where la pedriza is located (manzanares el real) is a really cool castle used by the templars#one of the best preserved medieval castles i've been to#definitely the best one in madrid#i almost added manzanares el real to the list of places to see next to madrid but it didn't feel important enough#there's also other places as well like again. if you want more info about specific stuff feel free to let me know!!!#also with public transport you should be able to get everywhere. the metro is (maybe a bit confusing) pretty reliable

I was tagged by @counterwiddershins, for this meme game where I tell you a bit about me so that you can get to know me better. Thanks, friend! :-)
favorite color: green, almost all shades, from olive to darkest pine. I don't love yellow-greens, though. They need to have some blue in them.
song stuck in my head: Dragula by Rob Zombie (I think?). I saw a tiktok this morning where the "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat" scene in The Aristocats was replaced with "Dragula" and it's been stuck in my head ever since.
last song I listened to: see: "The Aristocats" as scored by Rob Zombie. (I was trying to ease the earworm. It didn't work.) And then "Thunderstruck" by ACDC, "Mary on a Cross" by Ghost, and then the Act One Finale of Don Giovanni (criminally overshadowed by the Act Two Finale; this is one of the most baller ensembles in opera, period). I've still got Dragula stuck in my head, though.
three favorite foods: just three? I am She Who Eats All the Things. Hmm...I love bulgogi meatballs with rice and salad; I love taco bowls with good salsa and guacamole; I love fresh brioche slathered with salted butter and red plum jam, a cup of milky coffee on the side. I am also appallingly delighted these days by a plain bowl of Cheerios with very cold milk, a fact which made a teenage friend of mine put her hand on my arm and ask, in all earnestness, if I was okay.
"Something terrible has happened," I replied. "I like Cheerios now. I don't understand it but I cannot stop."
"Do you need to be smoke cleansed?" she asked. "Holy water might work."
Last thing I googled: "bookstores near San Francisco International Airport". I have to go up there tomorrow to pick up my mom and want to at least get my money's worth.
Dream trip: a Nile Cruise from Aswan to Cairo on a small private boat, like they did a hundred years ago. Do I realize that my fascination with the history of archaeology/Egyptology can be considered Problematic? Yes. But people have been cruising the Nile for millenia and I am a woman of science*, damnit, and I just want to see the panolpy of Egyptian history unfolding before my eyes like a goddamn Romantic, so that I can marvel at the wondrousness of the human condition and ponder mankind's infinite smallness in the face of the relentless march of history, yada yada yada. I am a simple woman. I want to stand in awe at the beauty and greatness of mankind and I want to do it from a small ship in the middle of the river.
I would also really like to visit Italy, particularly Venice and Rome.
*in my heart of hearts. I tried to be an academic, I truly did. I was not made for that world. But so help me, I can be an interested amateur!

As an African and an architecture nerd I'm unbelievably happy this post is doing as well as it is...here are some bonus examples!

(Afro-Contemporary style: Abrehot Library, Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. Fun fact: the second photo is too zoomed-out to see, but each of those main pillars is carved with the word "art" in dozens of languages!)

(Afrofuturist style: National Museum, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, which, despite seeming small from the outside, actually has a 500-seat theatre and a full 295-seat cinema inside.)

(Technically Nubian style but also kind of its own thing: Anakato Old House, Aswan, Egypt. Fun fact: This is actually a hotel!)

(Not a listed style but instead a cool little postcolonial fusion action: Asmara, Eritrea. A lot of stuff you'll see on Asmara and Eritrean architecture in general is leftover European modernist architecture from the colonial period, but I do believe the city has its own unique style that's worth appreciating along with that :) )
Finally, here's a bonus interior architecture thing that I think is really cool:

(Alliance franco-sénégalaise, Ziguinchor, Senegal. Photo credit: @_ccil_ on Instagram)
i feel like we don’t talk about things like this enough

Dunes & Waters, part 41
PART 1 • PREVIOUS PART • NEXT PART
NOTE: A bit NSFW, not explicit but tread with caution
The Box’s spells keep the lotus flower afloat in the days Remus works on the translation. Sirius isn’t needed for this part, there are no charms to break and no more curses to find, but he comes to the library every day anyway. Buys a record player and charms it to play their favourite songs, pesters Remus to take breaks for lunch.
It’s to the chorus of Golden Years that Remus cracks the list of ingredients.
“It says Osiris’ gift of life, the water of Nile in flood,” he tells Sirius.
His flower, the lotus, red as your blood the mornings I find you after the change.
A lock of your hair, wolf-kind, to bind the potion to you only.
The tree of rebirth: wood of Acacia, it’s leaves, it’s sap.
“Good thing we already have a werewolf to use for the hair,” Sirius says, affectionately pulling on a stubborn curl behind Remus’ ear, “and the Nile is in flood.”
“Seems too lucky.”
“Seems like fate.”
It’s the kind of thing Sirius has been saying more. It tugs on Remus’ insides and on the part of him that wants to keep them just like this, forever, in the heat of Aswan and in library offices and in their lovely apartment.
The part that occludes the other, smaller one that says “Sirius did his job. There’s nothing left for him. You have to let him go.”
Because that was the deal. Sirius breaks the curse, Sirius is a free man.
Relatively free, anyway. Not allowed back in Egypt, ever, but able to go home to England and to the Potters. Given by the length of letters James has been sending, he’s sorely missed.
But Remus stands in his way. Selfishly, greedily. Doesn’t say let’s let Kingsley know you’re finished. Doesn’t say thank you for your help, you did a great job. Doesn’t ask will you miss me?
He says nothing, and the guilt grows each day he watches Sirius wake up by his side.
It’s a week until the new moon, when the potion has to be brewed and they agree to get the water two days before it. Remus works on the rest of the translation. Peter comes to see them on the weekends, on some evenings they aren’t working. Remus gives them privacy. Locks himself in his bedroom with a book and falls asleep early, wakes up to Sirius pressing warm lips into the back of his neck. Arms around his waist, hands that drag him backwards and into the tightness of his embrace. Thinks this, please, every day in the soft delirium between sleep and waking as Sirius asks yes? and, always, he answers yes; the hand on his hip turning into fingers pulling him open then Sirius filling him up, closed, full.
Falling asleep like this, with nothing but a lazy spell Sirius used to clean them up after, with legs boneless and mind emptied but for the need to give. To offer at an altar, like ancient prayers, like: your goat is brought to you, its head is cut; your goose is brought to you, its head is cut.
Like Remus is Osiris and Sirius is Isis, stitching him together, flesh to flesh.

Hang 'Em High Mashup
A drawing of a street in Soba, capital city of Nubia, showcasing apartment buildings built out of dried mud and a street crowded with people walking about, driving carts, and riding whatever steeds they have available. Boy howdy, this was a struggle just to fucking research and get started on, as there is scant information on actual Nubian city and architectural ruins so I had to make due with whatever I could find, as well as with photos of Nubian buildings in and around Aswan. I got distracted the first few days last week playing the shit out of Morrowind after downloading it for free off of Bethesda's launcher, before I decided to double down and actually work on this damn drawing. And boy, it was exhausting work but I think it paid off for the most part. The colorful nature of the building references the Nubian Village in Aswan and the assortment of bright colors the houses there were, with an added burnt sienna to give a texture to show that these buildings are made out of mud (or whatever stones the Nubians could cut for construction).
Drawing the little figures in the streets, I got the idea to incorporate some weird little gags with the people in the apartment, doing such things like opening a window on a random passerby, pouring water on a pedestrian, and an avian getting ready to fly from his balcony. It was inspired by reading/looking through Richard Scarry and Where's Waldo? books where there's just so much activity going on in the page images with multitudes of people going about their day with a lot of weird and quirky shit happens. I incorporated two of those on the far-left building but I gave up incorporating them on any of the others, simply because there were so many windows to draw and so many colors to try to add. In the skyline, one can see the dome spires of an Orthodox cathedral, as Coptic Christianity is the predominate religion in Nubia, while there is also the steeple of a Catholic church and the towering minaret of a mosque. Islam is the second-largest religion in the Kingdom, as it's the majority faith of the Funj who live in the country's west. Catholicism, on the other hand, is a significant majority and is mostly followed by Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Italians who had settled in Nubia, descendants of traders, missionaries, and craftssars who came here to spread European knowledge and ways of thinking to the isolated African kingdom. Indeed, two of the apartments present showcase hints of European Renaissance architectural design, as seen by their balconies and ground floor arches in front of the main entrance.
As for the folks on the street, I first went with the idea of a bunch of people riding a giant lizard as a bus of-sorts, then I added in various donkey carts. The donkeys themselves are based off of Hippidion, an extinct horse genus and is part of my general thought process of what the mammals of this world look like. There's also two Nqwebasaurus, meant to be Ostrich steeds owned either by the wealthy or by the government, as well as a Crocodylomorph ridden by a soldier clad in yellow. Unfortunately, much like the buildings, I stopped adding folks and animals in the lower-right corner simply because I was tired of drawing and simply desired to get this damn thing done with.

This is loosely inspired by one of the incorrect quotes I did a month ago: https://tomboyjessie13.tumblr.com/post/713898214997278720/the-nile-river-egypt-a-few-miles-from-kom-ombo
Basically this drawing takes place during the 2nd half of "Stardust Crusaders" where our heroes finally made it to Egypt, Iggy joins the trip(albeit against his will), and my Jojo OC Medea, who was a agent of DIO, got caught and became their mole.
During their trip to Cairo, we witness Iggy being a jerk to the Crusaders and everyone around them, Medea being no exception as he raids her backpack of her personal belongings.
Her pajamas, her underwear, her toiletries, her game, her...."lady things", all just to mess with her and get his little paws on the ham sandwiches that she packed for her trip to Aswan.
Fun fact: Yesterday while I was still coloring this, one of my three uncles(my Dad's younger brothers) was visiting my house and actually saw what I was doing and thought the colors looked great.
That really puts a smile on my face.
Medea King belongs to me
