a finnick odair fic where reader is a capitolite, aged somewhere around 18 where finnick is still a forced pr0stitute
reader buys his time but as it turns out they’re looking to overthrow snow, and so asks that finnick gather secrets for them that would aid them
this is what initiates finnick’s love for secrets in the actual trilogy bc 1) he sees their worth as opposed to money and 2) they remind him of reader
and then reader dies at the end womp womp

Modern AU where Katniss is a forest ranger that patrols the local woods until one day she comes across some guy cooking up a fucking 5 Michelin star meal in the wilderness and filming it for TikTok.
Peeta falls in love at first sight cause he think looks like some she’s some forest nymph with a voice of an Angel.
After that, they have weekly cookout where Peeta’s meals get even more elaborate and delicious because Katniss brings him fresh game.

also as i reread the books i really want to examine the idea of Peeta and Gale as representations of "peace and war" because I think that that is an extreme oversimplification for both of them. Peeta being "peace" is not right because he's not afraid to be disruptive and disobey when necessary. In his first real scene he literally throws Haymitch's glass away from him. Hell, "peace" in stories isn't presented as a good thing. There's the uneasy peace that is literally the purpose of the games to ensure. It's not a good thing. The only reason Katniss is able to settle down and live the life she wanted to is because of rebellion and war.
Peeta is not a metaphor for choosing peace. He is just radically kind and empathetic in a world where selfishness and apathy are the best way to ensure survival. And this is something Katniss cannot comprehend at the beginning. She is confused when Peeta cleans Haymitch up alone, instead of asking a Capitol aide to help him because that would be good revenge. She cannot understand that he is just a kind person.
Gale, on the other hand, is extremely vengeful. And as much as I dislike him for the way he behaved towards Katniss after her games, his anger is justified and sympathetic. But it leads no where. In the end, his line of thinking parallels that to the Capitol, who created the Games as revenge for their peace and comfort being destroyed by the rebels. Obviously, Gale has many more reasons to be angry than the Capitol ever would, but using his rage and anger to lead the rebellion instead of the empathetic and kind view of Peeta, which seeks to create a better world for the oppressed, is what ultimately will crush the rebellion and destroy its root cause.
and the story is about Katniss coming to accept Peeta's outlook on the world is better grounds for a rebellion than Gale's. In the beginning of book 1 she literally tries her best to distance herself from Peeta because she is quite literally afraid of kindness and sees it as a way that he is exposing her weakness. In the end she realizes that the only world safe enough to settle down in is one that prioritizes kindness and its citizens. It's not about "peace versus war" because by choosing "peace" the cause leads to nowhere. But by choosing to create a safer and better society, there is always a greater reason to fight.

finnick x reader except it takes place during the quarter quell
president snow realized you two are a couple and promptly begins manipulating you, trying to get you two to sway the capitol’s preference from katniss and peeta
this way, he can more readily get rid of katniss
so either you and finnick sabotage it and hide in district 13 or you succeed and have to force katniss to third wheel you two for her own safety; snow won’t kill panem’s favorite couple’s friend

I know I've talked about this before, but I keep seeing the take that Katniss having a daydream about Peeta's child in the Quarter Quell somehow means that she already wanted to have a child with him at that point, and that she pictured herself as the mother of his child, and that that was the reason why she felt "deliciously happy" the next morning... And this take always bothers me, because I don't think it's supported by the text (and context).
I've talked about this in more detail in this post, but basically, Katniss was NOT expecting to be in that future with Peeta. When she imagined a future where "Peeta's child could be safe" (look how she referred to the child as his, and not as hers, or theirs), she was imagining a future where her plan to sacrifice herself for him had succeded. At that point, she was certain that she would die, even though she was wrong. But she still had hopes that Peeta could live and inspire the rebels (she said that herself), and she wanted him to live and be happy, even if it wasn't with her. And Peeta wanted the same for her. They "knew" they couldn't both live and have a future together, but yet they wanted to sacrifice themselves so that the other could live and find happiness, even if that meant they would be with someone else (Katniss couldn't imagine anyone specifically in the way Peeta could imagine Gale, but she "knew" that his child couldn't be hers). And that just shows how unselfish their love for each other was.
As for the "delicious feeling of happiness that is somehow connected with Peeta" that Katniss had in the morning after the beach kiss: Have you all ever been in love? If you have, you know why she felt that way. Lol

botany major!katniss, who isn’t so good with her words, so she gifts you flowers that correlate with what she’s feeling. you walk hand in hand through the woods as she points out different plants, rambling on about how to recognize various species and their distribution patterns.
fine arts major!peeta, working tirelessly at his family’s bakery, making personalized latte art which leaves him with huge tips at the end of the day. all of his peers recognize you as the inspiration for all of his assignments, your features taking up every bit of his sketchbook.
mechanical engineering major!gale, his schedule so full and busy but always making time to see you daily. you’re always the first to hear about how he did on a particular exam, cuddled up as you watch nature documentaries.
aquatic biology major!finnick, known around campus as the university heartthrob. he spends most of his free time at the docks or the beach, feet always bare and buried underwater, occasionally splashing you playfully. suntanning and writing your initials in the sand is how your dates usually go.
athletic training major!johanna, who caresses your sleeping features and plants a small kiss on your forehead before leaving for her morning run. she teasingly flexes her muscles while you’re applying kinesiology tape on her body.

It's no coincidence that the 75th Games ended with the destruction of the forcefield. After all, what inspired Plutarch to focus on the arena as his central tool for rebellion was a young kid from District 12 using the forcefield to win the Games.

Nothing is as devastating to me as Peeta instantly recognizing the sound of Gale being beaten in Catching Fire, probably because his own childhood of abuse.

One of the things that amazes me the most about the trilogy is how subtly Collins molds Katniss' mindset to a softer and more understanding place. And how does she do it?
Through Peeta.
Peeta is the embodiment of empathy, love, and kindness, which is one of the first things Katniss notices about him. He is the first person to deciphers the main goal of the games: to pit the districts against one another, as mere pawns to the Capitol.
Katniss imitates Peeta more than we think.
In the first book, when her ally Rue is killed, she finally understands that Peeta had figured it out before tepping foot in the arena. She begins to rethink her animal instincts that made her kill Marvel without a second thought, wondering what the games had made of her.
She understands, what she and had Gale refused to at the beginning of the book, when he says that killing a human is no different. But it is different, and this is a point of epiphany for her. She covers Rue with flowers to show that she is not a piece in their games.
Ultimately, this change leads to the final move with the berries that sparks the rebellion. It is Peeta's ideology of non-conformity and rebellion through non-violence that saves them both and leads their country to freedom.
Additionally, in Catching her demeanour towards the other victors is amusing to say the least. It is obvious that she has let go of her survivalist mentality, she gives the victors a chance (even the most extreme ones such as Cashmere, Glass and Enobaria ) to view them as they really are, setting aside the Capitol created image.
Peeta’s empathy and moral integrity underpin her actions and decisions as she leads the rebellion, she conveys that true leadership involves compassion and understanding, and not just strategy and strength.
Through Peeta, she learns to love more and to have more understanding for the people around her, whether it be her prep team or a career tribute. Peeta's existence is what primarily helps her survive and prevents her from adopting Gale's extreme realist approach to war.
Katniss is the apex of the love triangle, representing the middle ground between Peeta and Gale's liberal and realist approaches. However, she is unsure of her stance at the beginning of the first book.
“Not people,” I say. “How different can it be, really?” says Gale grimly. The awful thing is that if I can forget they’re people, it will be no different at all.
Throughout Mockingjay, Katniss often finds herself at odds with Gale’s strategies, especially when they involve potential civilian casualties. And even then Peeta is physically absent, his voice rings at the back of her head. Even in his semi hijacked state he manages to guide Katniss in his propos.
"Is this really what we want to do? Kill ourselves off completely? In the hopes that — what? Some decent species will inherit the smoking remains of the earth?”
Peeta brings out this sympathetic side, and so she symbolically becomes a neutral ground between Gale and Peeta's mindsets. She embodies the balance between a liberal and realist approach to war.

I love the soulmate-ery element of Peeta tossing Katniss the burnt bread, but I also love the idea that Peeta would have done something similar for anyone in that kind of despair…
