years later when theyve moved far away from hawkins, have been together for a couple decades, married or something close to it, settled in their life, steve getting a call from nancy that her moms died, theres gonna be a funeral. doesnt formally invite steve but its heavily implied he's welcomed to come.
and of course steves gonna go. he's stayed close with nancy all these years and he knows she has jonathan and mike and holly and her own family to lean on but theyre friends so... not going doesnt even feel like an option
and its kind of just assumed billy will go with him back to hawkins, to the funeral as his plus one. because theres not a whole lot they dont do together and they certainly havent traveled without each other, so when billy tells him its a hard no on that one, steve doesnt get it.
steve still doesnt get it when billy gets an attitude whenever steve starts talking about how sad it is for nancy that she's lost her mom, how "at least karen went peacefully", when he keeps pushing how he wants billy to go with him and "fine you dont have to go to the funeral but just come to hawkins with me for a little getaway"
and its not until steves pushing for billy to go again, muttering about how hes an asshole under his breath when billys getting all pissy and steve says something along the lines of "i seem to recall a few rumors back in the day about you being real friendly with her so i dont understand this stick up your butt all of a sudden!"
its meant to be a joke, kind of. a little bitchy, a little teasing, but he definitely wasnt expecting for billy to go off like a bomb, laying out in black and white just exactly what was going on with him and karen back in the day. how its taken billy years and years of therapy to unpack all that shit and realize how fucking gross it was and how a grown adult woman was using him to fill some void in her marriage and how he was so desperate for someone to notice him, to like him, that he didnt think twice when the moms around town would fawn after him, a teenager. a kid. and when he thinks back on that time now it just leaves him feeling dirty so, no, he does not want to be around people mourning karen wheeler and what a great wife and mother she was. sorry for nancys loss or whatever but he's gonna pass.
and now that that particular secret has come to light, steve doesnt really feel like being there either. calls up nancy and makes up an excuse that he cant get any time out of work and he's so so sorry about it, but he'll try visiting hawkins when he can to make up for it.
the flight to indiana is already booked but steve calls up and changes it to any other place that he can, doesnt matter. adds on another ticket for billy. while everyone from hawkins is at the funeral theyre locked away in a hotel room forgetting about it all. billy healing in his own way.

Do you think that the Byers will ever move back to Hawkins? I know it's a popular theory that they will move back once they find Hopper, but I'm not sure how much sense that makes tbh. I mean, how many people can come back to life in this town? There's gonna be questions he can't answer, so it might be safer for him (& for El) to stay away. I don't like the idea of El & Will never being back with their friends but I'm just not sure how they would explain their return in a way that makes sense.
I really don’t know and I mean in terms of within the story I can give you a thousand reasons why Joyce would decide to move back and a thousand reasons why she wouldn’t, but at the end of the day, it’s not gonna come down to what makes the most sense within the story, but what the Duffers want to happen and how they want Joyce to feel about it all. And I rlly have no idea bc it really will come down to all stuff we don’t know yet like what s4’s plot is and whether or not there will be a s5 and how they’re gonna handle this arc in general. I can’t even really tell you if I think they will or won’t have them move back bc we just don’t know any of the relevant stuff that’s gonna determine that. In terms of fanon, that’s what I’m always gonna hc, the only thing that would change as new seasons come out is When they move back, but canonically no idea
#everything with hop complicates things too#bc we know he WANTS to live in hawkins and he wants joyce to live there#and hes never said ao canonically but im sure he thinks its good for El too to be there (for so many reasons i can unpack)#but like#opposed to what this fandom wants to rhink somwtimes#hes not gonna come back and immediately move in with the byers and marry joyce and be one big happy family#like hell prob stay in thwir house for a little while until he gets back on his feet#but even if they start dating when he comes back theyre still two separate families#and thats rllt gonna put el in a weird position and i think theyd both be aware of that#its like shes dealing with divorced parents without them ever even being together#bc we dk how long shell have veen with joyce but itll certainly be long enough to view her as a mother figure#so if hop comes back and he gets his own house and she goes to live with him again#hes not gonna want to separate her from joyce rlly bc hes gonna know thats her family now too#(not to mention his own feelings and i doubt hed wanna be far from joyce esp dhring whats obv gonna be a ROUGH time)#so i cant imagine a scenario where he and el go back to hawkins but leave the byers behind#so rlly theres hust a lot of factors at play and i do think its gonna ve a bit of an all or nothing situation#theyre either All gonna come back to hawkins or All stay away

Hi there 😊 if your asks are open, are you able to do some headcannons for room-mates Steve, Robin & Eddie?
anon i am kissing u gently on the forehead here’s some stuff i had in mind:
• first of all i declare these tags as canon:
(via @frogs-and-lilypads and @wynnyfryd )
• i was thinking theyre in an apartment but if house makes more sense to u then godspeed bc its a small town in 80s indiana that ppl think is cursed so i cant imagine property value is super high
• incomprehensible jean-marc explanation i posted at 4 am
• not a headcanon but while i’m at it, @lilshitwayne linked this fic where they move into the creel house by fivecenturiesverse: i finally got around to reading it last night and aaa it’s very cute!! thank u for the link!
• as drawn, no one wears their own clothes lmao. they’re always stealing each other’s shirts, sweatpants, they mostly lose track of whose socks are whose
• half their furniture is just . stuff they found in back alleys & the cheapest shit they could find at a furniture store, plus some hand-me-down things from the (actual) adults. after a few months, though, especially with eddie’s hoarding habits, the place becomes pretty cluttered
• everyone tagging the art as “steddie (kinda)” is correct of course they r pining for each other
• (the first time the kids show up unexpected they ask steve “is that eddie’s shirt????” & he’s just, *sweating* “yes and? it’s comfortable”)
• im thinking robin goes to community college? it’s a bit of a drive but she wants to stay in hawkins (or more specifically: with steve and eddie and the kids)
• steve teaches her to drive over the summer. while he and robin bicker and she almost takes out 4 mailboxes and a stop sign, eddie’s in the backseat also helping (read: adding to the chaos) but he’s a bit less stressed than steve is bc lets be real he does not drive much better than her
• nancy is at emmerson or whatever that college was in canon idk. shes living her best life & calls/visits here and there. i feel like out of all of them she’d want to get out of hawkins the most idk
• uncle wayne has his own place, paid for by either those lab people or the gov or insurance or something — he visits too (and they go to his place for thanksgivings)
• the kids r over all the time of course. steve isn’t even sure how they keep getting in
• for the most part, steve cooks. one time (maybe for steve’s birthday) eddie’s like “hey robs what if we cooked something fancy for him it’ll be a surprise he’ll love it” and it is indeed a surprise when steve comes home from his shift to find a firetruck in the parking lot & the whole building evacuated. when he gets out of the car he spots robin and eddie standing awkwardly to the side of the crowd and when they see him they simultaneously point at each other
• im not actually sure what eddie’s job wld be. still dealing? housewife? tattoo artist? working part time at some store? idk
• the neighbors file a noise complaint bc of eddie’s guitar playing [eddie: “can i smear butter on his doorstep. it’ll be hilarious i promise” steve: “dude he’s like 94 we are not making him break a hip. be reasonable. we’re gonna fill his mailbox with gravel for a month”]
• all the cuddle sessions!! especially angsty ones where one or more of them has a nightmare, quite often the wake-up-screaming kind & they help each other then end up piling up in one bed for the night
• just . the joy of living away from parents for the first time. them realizing they can set their own rules. them realizing no one is stopping them from making pasta at 3 am while high and eating it straight from the pot in a circle on the floor
• especially when it comes to stuff like robin having sensory issues, for example maybe the texture of the bathroom rug bothers her. and when she mentions it steve is just like “aight” and throws it out then & there. and she just has a moment of realizing “oh. no one’s going to yell at me for not liking something. no one’s going to roll their eyes and say i’m being stupid or dramatic.” & tears up a little bit
• eddie has the same issue, to a degree. (i headcanon him as having ADHD bc i love projecting) but they both really like the feel of steve’s sweaters so they steal them a lot & when steve does have a chance to wear one he has to deal w them petting his arms for like 20 mins (and pretends to be annoyed lmao)
• them just learning to b patient with each other for the things they can’t rlly help
• oh and. the jean-marc funeral procession involves eddie reading the plant its funeral rites (the religion changes each time) as robin plays the flute and steve — who needed a lot of convincing to play along — lowers it into a small grave they dug near the property (and keep having to dig up for the next unfortunate jean-marc)
ok i should probably stop here LMAO this post is already so long 😭😭 also sorry that i took forever to answer work was killing me and im a mess in general
#ask#seri.txt#roommate au#stranger things#this is. so long. and i thought i’d made it pretty short 😭😭#also of COURSE i’m drawing more of it dw
