They do mention in the books that the parents sent the kids out of the house that day, but it was implied to be for a secret meeting, and not because they knew there would be a fire. That is why Snicket says in Miserable Mill Beatrice ask “Where is Count Olaf” far too late, because he was supposed to be at the meeting but didn’t show up for the obvious reason.

also lol obviously i wrote these notes as i watched the episodes so 1) when i wrote that note i assumed (as we were supposed to) that “mother” and “father” were their parents, and with that assumption that they were alive, was like “ok so they knew there would be a fire and escaped?” but obviously knowing who “mother” and “father” are, that’s now a moot point, and obviously their parents wouldn’t have known there was a fire and chosen to die in it. so that note probably shouldn’t have even made it into my text post because there’s some clear logical gaps in it, lmao. whoops. i wasn’t really thinking as i transcribed my notes, apparently.
