Do you prefer ‘blank slate’ main characters you make yourself or otherwise project onto, or characters with a set personality and backstory?

i will take a character with a personality and backstory any day of the week over a create-your-own kind of deal. those games always play a little bit like a self-insert and that trope that doesn't appeal to me across any media

(though i will give developers a little kiss if the game has things like branching dialogue options or traits and skills trees that affect gameplay because you better believe i'm replaying to break down all facets of the main character in minute detail)

Someone has never played a video game before but is open to trying any genre. What game would you recommend as their first?

OH that question is so tricky but i'm gonna say telltale's the walking dead season 1 for the following reasons:

it's mechanics are so simple a blind monkey could probably get through it without too much bother

its fairly short from what i remember? and episodic so not a big commitment

it has an incredibly strong story, compelling and sympathetic characters, and your choices have tangible impact on their lives

i recruit another sucker to listen to me cry and wail and tear my hair out over lee and clementine's relationship (because it's been a decade and i am still HAUNTED by them.)
