Political bullshit under cut.
Man I just love it when I'm reading a story with an interesting enough premise then out of nowhere the protagonists go out to an Israeli cuisine restaurant just to bond over referring to the Diaspora as thieves and bastards and to be confused when someone speaks Hebrew.
... And then the author tried to justify it by saying that they're Jewish (but anti-zionist) and "in no way trying to make a political commentary" but the whole thing just reeks of internalized antisemitism because – believe it or not – they literally did not have to write any of that the way it was written.
Nobody sat them down and forced them to write a restaurant specializing in Israeli cuisine just to ramrod their own political opinions into the story. Nobody coerced them into writing two siblings speaking their native tongue as normal but a man speaking Hebrew as awkward and bizarre. Nobody made them write their characters laughing about calling Mizrahi refugees of Middle Eastern institutionalized antisemitism “thieves” for bringing the food they enjoyed from one home to another (or for moving to escape persecution in the first place).
And they can claim that they “weren’t trying” to make a political commentary, but that is very obviously bullshit; they just did such a poor job of it that they not only came across as anvilicious but also as suffering from internalized bigotry (or possibly just anti-Mizrahi sentiment) while also being wholly ignorant toward the issues faced by MENA Jews – both past and present.
#and this is why we don't read ygo fanfiction kids#my mom's side is mizrahi and the history of jewish ppl in arab-majority countries is a bit of a sore spot for me#anyway i'm off to make some (vegan) marak kubbeh out of spite#let me just end this as I usually do in these situations: by pointing out that anything that isn't a two-state solution is at best#hoping for displacement and at worst hoping for death#and if you honestly wish either of those on one group or the other you are a horrid and disgusting person
