Queer Movies/Books/TV Shows for Pride Month!
Happy Pride everyone!! For your viewing/reading pleasure I have made a (non-exhaustive) list of queer media that I have enjoyed!Â
Movies/Documentaries
Pride (2014): An old tried and true favorite, which meets at the intersection of queer and workersâ rights. A group of queer activists support the 1985 minersâ strike in Wales (complete with a sing-through of Bread and Roses + Power in a Union)
Portrait of a Lady on Fire:Â On an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman (or, two young lesbians fall in love by the sea, and you cry)
Godâs Own Country: Young farmer Johnny Saxby numbs his daily frustrations with binge drinking and casual sex, until the arrival of a Romanian migrant worker for lambing season ignites an intense relationship that sets Johnny on a new path (Seriously this movie is GREAT and doesnât get enough love, watch it! Itâs rough but ends happily)
The Half of It:Â When smart but cash-strapped teen Ellie Chu agrees to write a love letter for a jock, she doesn't expect to become his friend - or fall for his crush (as in she falls for his crush who is another girl. This movie was so good, and really friendship focused!)Â
Saving Face:Â A Chinese-American lesbian and her traditionalist mother are reluctant to go public with secret loves that clash against cultural expectations (this is an oldie and a goodie, with a happy ending!)
Moonlight:Â A young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood (featuring gay men of color!)
Carol:Â An aspiring photographer develops an intimate relationship with an older woman in 1950s New York (everyoneâs seen this I think, but I couldnât not have it here)
Milk: The story of Harvey Milk and his struggles as an American gay activist who fought for gay rights and became California's first openly gay elected official (the speech at the end of this made me cry. Warning, of course, for death, if you donât know about Harvey Milk)
Pride (Hulu Documentary):Â A six-part documentary series chronicling the fight for LGBTQ civil rights in America (they go by decade from the 50s-2000s, and there is a lot of great trans inclusion in this)
Paris is Burning (Documentary): A 1990s documentary about the African American and Latinx ballroom scene. Available on Youtube!
A New York Christmas Wedding:Â As her Christmas Eve wedding draws near, Jennifer is visited by an angel and shown what could have been if she hadn't denied her true feelings for her childhood best friend (this movie is SO CUTE. Itâs really only nominally a Christmas movie and easily watched anytime. Features an interracial sapphic couple!)Â
TV ShowsÂ
Love, Victor:Â Victor is a new student at Creekwood High School on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation (this is a spin-off of Love, Simon, and itâs very sweet and well done! Featuring a young gay man of color)
Sex Education:Â A teenage boy with a sex therapist mother teams up with a high school classmate to set up an underground sex therapy clinic at school (this has multiple queer characters, including a featured young Black gay man and also in season 2 there is a side ace character!)Â
Black Sails: I mean, do I even need to put a summary here? If you follow me you know that Black Sails is full of queer pirates, just queers everywhere.
Gentleman Jack: A dramatization of the life of LGBTQ+ trailblazer, voracious learner and cryptic diarist Anne Lister, who returns to Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1832, determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home Shibden Hall (Period drama lesbians!!! A title sequence that will make you gay just by watching!)Â
Tales of the City (2019):Â A middle-aged Mary Ann returns to San Francisco and reunites with the eccentric friends she left behind. "Tales of the City" focuses primarily on the people who live in a boardinghouse turned apartment complex owned by Anna Madrigal at 28 Barbary Lane, all of whom quickly become part of what Maupin coined a "logical family". It's no longer a secret that Mrs. Madrigal is transgender. Instead, she is haunted by something from her past that has long been too painful to share (this is based on a book series and itâs got lots of great inter-generational queer relationships!)Â
The Haunting of Bly Manor:Â After an au pairâs tragic death, Henry hires a young American nanny to care for his orphaned niece and nephew who reside at Bly Manor with the chef Owen, groundskeeper Jamie and housekeeper, Mrs. Grose (sweet, tender, wonderful lesbians. A bittersweet ending but this show is so so wonderful)
Sense8:Â A group of people around the world are suddenly linked mentally, and must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world's order (queers just EVERYWHERE in this show, of all kinds)
Books
Loveless by Alice Oseman:Â Georgia has never been in love, never kissed anyone, never even had a crush â but as a fanfic-obsessed romantic sheâs sure sheâll find her person one day. This wise, warm and witty story of identity and self-acceptance sees Alice Oseman on towering form as Georgia and her friends discover that true love isnât limited to romance (donât be turned off by this title, itâs tongue-in-cheek. This is a book about an aroace college girl discovering herself and centers the importance and power of platonic relationships! I have it on my TBR and have heard great things)
Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters:Â Reese almost had it all: a loving relationship with Amy, an apartment in New York City, a job she didn't hate. She had scraped together what previous generations of trans women could only dream of: a life of mundane, bourgeois comforts. The only thing missing was a child. But then her girlfriend, Amy, detransitioned and became Ames, and everything fell apart. Now Reese is caught in a self-destructive pattern: avoiding her loneliness by sleeping with married men.Ames isn't happy either. He thought detransitioning to live as a man would make life easier, but that decision cost him his relationship with Reeseâand losing her meant losing his only family. Even though their romance is over, he longs to find a way back to her. When Ames's boss and lover, Katrina, reveals that she's pregnant with his babyâand that she's not sure whether she wants to keep itâAmes wonders if this is the chance he's been waiting for. Could the three of them form some kind of unconventional familyâand raise the baby together? This provocative debut is about what happens at the emotional, messy, vulnerable corners of womanhood that platitudes and good intentions can't reach. Torrey Peters brilliantly and fearlessly navigates the most dangerous taboos around gender, sex, and relationships, gifting us a thrillingly original, witty, and deeply moving novel (again, donât be thrown off by the title, it too, is tongue-in-cheek. This book was GREAT, and written by a trans women with a queer-and especially trans--audience in mind)
A Tip for the Hangman by Allison Epstein: A gay Christopher Marlowe, at Cambridge and trying to become Englandâs best new playwright, finds himself wrapped up in royal espionage schemes while also falling in love (this book is by a Twitter friend of mine, and it is a wonderful historical thriller with a gay man at the center).
Creatures of Will and Temper by Molly Tanzer: a very very queer remix of The Picture of Dorian Gray (which was already quite queer), featuring amazing female characters, a gay Basil, and a much happier ending than the original.Â
Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston: The gay prince of England and the bisexual, biracial first son of the president fall in love (think an AU of 2016 where a woman becomes president). Featuring a fantastic discovery of bisexuality, ruminations on grief, and just a truly astonishing book. One of my favorites!
One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston:Â For cynical twenty-three-year-old August, moving to New York City is supposed to prove her right: that things like magic and cinematic love stories donât exist, and the only smart way to go through life is alone. She canât imagine how waiting tables at a 24-hour pancake diner and moving in with too many weird roommates could possibly change that. And thereâs certainly no chance of her subway commute being anything more than a daily trudge through boredom and electrical failures. But then, thereâs this gorgeous girl on the train (This is Casey McQuistonâs brand new novel featuring time-travel, queer women, and I absolutely cannot WAIT to read it)
The Heiress by Molly Greely: Set in the Pride and Prejudice universe, this takes on Anne de Bourg (Lady Catherineâs daughter), and makes her queer!Â
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters:Â Nan King, an oyster girl, is captivated by the music hall phenomenon Kitty Butler, a male impersonator extraordinaire treading the boards in Canterbury. Through a friend at the box office, Nan manages to visit all her shows and finally meet her heroine. Soon after, she becomes Kitty's dresser and the two head for the bright lights of Leicester Square where they begin a glittering career as music-hall stars in an all-singing and dancing double act. At the same time, behind closed doors, they admit their attraction to each other and their affair begins (Sarah Waters is the queen of historical lesbians. All of her books are good, and theyâre all gay! The Paying Guests is another great one)
(On a side note re: queer books, there are MANY, these are just ones Iâve read more recently. Also there are a lot of indie/self-published writers doing great work writing queer books, so definitely support your local indie authors!)Â

ALL OF THEM (someone asked me to do that so Iâm passing it along to you)
thank you!! Just managed to finish this before the kiddo woke up :)
1. favourite performance you ever attended
Iâve been to exactly 3 opera performances, and one was technically an intermezzo, and Iâd say that one because it was a surprise that my teeny tiny home town that doesnât even have an opera house despite being the third largest city in the state would do a production of a super obscure piece that I happened to love, AND it was in English with a hilarious translation, AND that translation happened to be by a friend of mine who worked at the theater that put it on (which is also the theater that turned me gay). The intermezzo in question was La serva padrona (which is fantastic look it up) and it was translated to Maid to Marry which I will never not get a kick out of.
2. a performance you wouldâve wanted to attend (present or past)
Literally anything Mentzer has done that hasnât been filmed which is unfortunately a lot (she was Idamante??? And Octavian?? And Adalgisa??? and Rosina?? and Prince Charmant with Frederica von Stade in Cendrillon??? seriously universe get your shit together she deserves more recognition)
3. a piece perfect for your commute
anytime I take a long walk I listen to Hoffmann, almost anytime I drive I listen to my mezzo boi playlist that consists of all my favorite trouser role arias/duets etc. (so, like, every one that Iâve heard)
4. do you have a go-to opera (and version)?
lately Hoffmann and Idomeneo (the latter of which I still think should be called Illia e Idamante or just Idamante but I digress). Versions would be: for Hoffmann, Sher (2009 & 2015), La Scala â95, and Brussels â85 and for Idomeneo Met 2017 and Salzburg 2006.
5. an opera you loved only on the second listening
as mentioned earlier, Idomeneo
5. a composer you have tried and failed to like
again not really sure bc Iâve liked most of what I heard, but I donât really vibe with Glass
6. a character you love and definitely never want to meet in real life
Possibly Elizabeth from Don Carlo(s); love her because sheâs wonderful and deserves so much better, but wouldnât want to meet her because we would probably just cry a lot.
7. following up on that: your guilty problematic favourite character
hmmmmmm maybe Eboli?
8. forget anatomy/physiology. which voice category/fach would you choose?
mezzo :D
9. a casting/singerâs voice youâll defend to the death. (now tell us why)
Nadine Sierra. Seriously people have been so mean to her in comments/reviews lately and itâs just rude because sheâs amazing and adorable and talented and definitely one of my favorite divas, reins in my heart as my second favorite Countess Almaviva and is my favorite Illia and I want to see her as everything. People donât even have anything specific about her to critique, they just say sheâs bad. Which, itâs okay to just not like a performer, but donât bash them because you personally donât like them. Erg. Her voice and expressions SLAY me and she deserves only positivity.
10. and a production youâll defend to the death
Sher Hoffmann. People are so mean to it in the reviews! I think itâs utter genius and the sets and costumes are so eccentric and fit the aesthetic of the opera so well, and the casts are amazing--anyone who wants to criticize Lindsey or Calleja can back off and never return. Also to all the critics who complain that itâs too risquĂ©, they have obviously never seen the Geneva 2008 one where the chorus spends a good part of the opera almost fully nude, as does Olympia. Sherâs Hoffmann is my favorite and as the question states I will defend it to the death.
11. something youâre a rigid traditionalist (or revolutionary) about?
Iâm kind of a traditionalist for ballet scenes in opera. I get it can be hard to stage those extended musical bits that arenât as welcome now as they were back in the day, but how is it helping to make the choreography weird and irrelevant? Iâd rather just have the ballet removed altogether than suffer through some weird staging. If a production retains the ballet, I would either like to just see some pretty dancing (actually, the Troyens that just streamed last night is a good example of that imo), or something related thatâs also kinda funny (like the Wiener 2020 Don Carlos, though Iâm not 100% okay with everything in it) or something that makes a statement about the opera (like the 2006 Salzburg Idomeneo, which I wrote a really long thing about earlier). My favorite choreography in any opera so far though is Mark Morrisâs super awesome genderfluid choreography for the Met 2009 Orfeo ed Euridice because itâs just some really pretty dancing and also very gay.Â
12. an opera that made you have an ~*awakening*~ of sorts (any sort)
Don Carlo(s), you probably know why by now đ
13. an opera/music debate do you know so much about that people will suspiciously ask âwhy...do you know this?â
Probably Hoffmann and its various edits
14. rant about a topic/an opera you love but havenât found a good time to do so on your blog.
Iâm not really a fan of countertenors in castrati roles. Iâve seen some countertenor performers that I like, and some productions with them that Iâve enjoyed, but I really need my mezzo bois. I know thereâs not really enough to justify one over the other, given the original voice type is now nonexistent, but I will take any opportunity to infuse more sapphic energy into operas. Plus, I just like the sound of the mezzo voice better. And a LOT of my favorite mezzos have played those roles and I seriously donât know what Iâd do without Alice Cooteâs Idamante or ElÄ«na GaranÄaâs Sesto. If a role was specifically written for a countertenorâI see this more in modern opera, AdĂšs in particularâthatâs a different story. I enjoy those. But for Baroque/opera seria, I wanna see mezzos.
