I like to imagine that historians don't usually go to the Nations for information not because their existence is secret/no one knows where they are, but because they're just not terribly reliable sources. Let's face it, most people can't tell you exactly what was going on in the world or what life was like for anyone outside of themselves and their immediate family when they were thirteen unless something really drastic happened.
The lone exception to this is Honda Kiku, who has been hoarding every text that crosses his desk, from important historical documents to grocery lists, ever since China taught him how to read.
