#I'd have to go back to watch the episode to compare#but I can definitely hear the part that would have been identified#as 'swing your razor high sweeny'#anyway#I know that WWX's death was changed in the drama#vs the book#but it's a change I really love#if this musical interpretation holds up I love it#wwx is the sacrifice and he dances himself to death#3000 men couldn't kill him he had to do it himself - reblogging my own tags from last time
@citrusandbergamot can you say more? I’m not actually familiar with Rite of Spring. I just thought it reminded me of Sweeney Todd (and my mom agreed and began swinging her imaginary razor high) and I thought maybe they were doing similar things with riffing on the Dies Irae as Sondheim did there?
Edit: @veliseraptor started playing me The Rite of Spring and I have actual heard this and forgotten its name and I see what you mean but also still want to hear more about your thoughts on this
#I think about this often#both the analysis post and just CQL's choice to do this in the first place#because the thing is that for the most part CQL is pretty committed to a classical chinese musical soundtrack#which is appropriate! it's a xianxia setting and music is an important plotline in it#but for this scene -- this incredibly important and hard-hitting scene --#they broke away from that and chose this -- a piece from a russian ballet -- instead#it's such a departure that the choice HAS to have been deliberate‚ and with some pretty heavy justification#and this is it. this is what it's about.#CQL is sometimes goofy and sometimes drops the ball#but when it is good#it's PHENOMENAL#long post#the untamed
