HOW DOES IT DEVELOP AFTER THAT THOUGH. HOW/WHEN DOES THE TRUTH GET REVEALED, AND/OR WHEN IS IT MADE CLEAR THAT PHOENIX IS *NOT* DATING LAMIROIR. WHEN (IF EVER) DO PHOENIX AND EDGEWORTH REALIZE THAT THE OTHER LIKES HIM BACK. (Misunderstanding-plot frustrate and annoy me as much as the next asshole, but with Phoenix and Edgeworth it is like. Not only is it par for the course, but it is also hardly anywhere near the WORST that has happened with them.)
I don’t consider “stupid dumbasses in love with each other and too insecure and self-conscious to admit it or realize the other likes him back” to be a misunderstanding plot, because I hate misunderstanding plots but eat that shit up and write it in like every fucking story I ever have which might be my cop-out to avoid having to write an actual romance. But for Phoenix and Edgeworth it’s also just canon and I love that.
I’m counting this as NaNo words and that helps catch me up a huge chunk back toward where I need to be.
-
The kids are just fucking weird, is something Phoenix has noticed, and the more of them are in one place, the weirder it gets. He works a case that Sebastian is prosecuting, Kay the detective, and there’s one point when they’re whispering together at the other side of the crime scene and Athena runs over, vaults the tape outline of the corpse, and joins in. And they all shut up when Phoenix approaches, which means they weren’t talking about the case, and honestly, guys, there’s time to chat later, talk about the fucking case. But Sebastian acts like, aggressively normal, way too normal, and Kay keeps giving Phoenix the I’m-watching-you look and he does not know what the hell’s going on, and when he asks Athena she shrugs and grunts noncommittally in a way to avoid triggering Psyche-Locks.
And it keeps happening, too. He comes to the office after-hours to find Athena, Trucy, Juniper, Blackquill, and Klavier hanging out and they all snap silent with guilty looks when he enters. It’s even worse when Sebastian and Kay are part: still all the guilty looks, except Kay, who’s still doing I’m-watching-you and Phoenix keeps shrugging in confusion in response to her because really he still doesn’t know what the hell is going on.
It’s contagious, whatever it is, and it spreads to the kids in Khura’in. They’re having some sort of video chat hangout one evening-morning (depending on time zone) and Phoenix wanders in to tell Trucy to put the knife down, I don’t CARE if Mr Arebal and Prosecutor Sahdmadhi are showing you proper throwing technique, and Nahyuta on screen smiles tightly and asks Phoenix how he’s doing, and when Phoenix simply says it’s all going good, same as ever, Nahyuta asks “Nothing new?” in a way that sounds like he’s hinting that there should be something new, but there isn’t as far as Phoenix knows and Phoenix figures he should probably know his own life best.
“Oh my god, have a spine, all of you,” Ema snaps from somewhere off-screen and her arms appear over Apollo’s head to upend the remains of a Snackoos bag onto Nahyuta. “Mr Wright, we’re all wondering if - ow - Apollo” - he seems to have elbowed her - “well I’m wondering if everyone else is a coward, but–”
“You got crumbs in my hair,” Nahyuta says, sounding half despairing and half like a petulant child, and Rayfa snickers from out of sight.
“That’s because you’re a coward,” Ema says, and Nahyuta carefully extracts himself from around Apollo and lunges off in Ema’s direction. “Mr Wright!” she yells over the sounds of a scuffle. “Do you have a girlfriend? The people demand answers! Ow! Hey! Give me–”
“Wh - what?” Phoenix asks. He looks away from the screen to the kids present, all of whom are watching him expectantly. “No, no I don’t. Why would you think that?”
“Give my my Snackoos!” Ema shrieks, and behind Apollo and Rayfa who has now entered view, Phoenix watches Nahyuta bound away, a bag of Snackoos held high above his head, while poor Ema, a full foot shorter than him, jumps up and down flailing her arms to reach. “I am older than you! Isn’t respecting your elders a key religious tenent–”
“Respecting our ancestors, and you aren’t dead yet, Detective.”
“You’re gonna be dead in a minute!”
There is a sound that seems to Phoenix like the very specific sound of a prince-regent/prosecutor and a forensics investigator tripping each other down some stairs. “I’m glad Nahyuta’s figuring out how to make friends,” Apollo deadpans, and the silence that follows breaks as Rayfa begins wheezing.
Phoenix decides he is not going to get answers as to why without Ema around, and wanders away to leave the kids to whateverthe fuck this is and wherever the hell they got that suspicion. Especially thepart where this collective of gay idiot children asked specifically girlfriendand not a neutral term.
-
He gets an answer out of, of all people,Edgeworth, one of the rare times they have time just the two of them to talkabout something that isn’t work. Of course they do talk about work, andthen there’s a long pause where Edgeworth looks like he’s working up thecourage to say something, and then he says, “I heard an interesting rumor fromMs Faraday the other day.”
Phoenix has a suspicion, and it’s not just thefact that Edgeworth finds this presumably so awkward that his speech siltstoward unnecessary formality in reference to Kay. And the fact that it’s Kay,who’s the one of the kids who’s been not just weird but almost unfriendly—“Should I guess?” Phoenix asks. “They’re thinking - or wondering if - I have agirlfriend.”
Edgeworth nods and coughs awkwardly. “I have noidea where they’ve gotten this idea,” Phoenix adds, and it feels dire toclear this up with Edgeworth first, most importantly, lest he think thatPhoenix is keeping secrets from him. “Did Kay say why?”
“Something involving Gavin,” Edgeworth says.“That he saw you or heard you mentioned or - something, from a woman heknows.” Phoenix blinks and tries to think of what mutual female friend he andKlavier have who isn’t half his age. He’s coming up empty. “The singer -Lamiror?”
“Lamiroir,” Phoenix corrects automatically, hismouth gone instantly dry. Edgeworth scrutinizes him like they’re in court,Phoenix on the stand, the accused. “She’s a friend - but I’m not dating her.I’d have told Trucy, I promised Trucy I’d tell her if I ever - I’d tell you.I mean, if nothing else, you need to know who to suspect if I go missing.”He forces a laugh, but it’s not a joke, and the frown lines on Edgeworth’sforehead deepen.
“You’re still acting very much like you’rehiding something,” Edgeworth says. Phoenix really is the accused, and this aninterrogation. “And you’re deflecting.”
Yeah, if he’s deflecting in a way that meansmaking jokes obliquely referencing Dahlia, he’s in really deep, and really bad.“Yeah, and it’s - it would be easy to say that I have a secret girlfriend, butI don’t, and it’s way more complicated than that but it’s not - she’s Trucy andApollo’s mother.”
God he was not supposed to say that, butEdgeworth’s eyes were narrowing suspiciously even further, and Phoenix ishonestly terrible under pressure, how has he ever won cases against Edgeworth, honestly, he had one job to do for Thalassa and that was to not tell anyoneuntil she was ready and he just fucking blurted it out because Edgeworth wasgiving him this mildly-betrayed look of you had a relationship you’re hidingfrom me.
And he couldn’t even just have said she’sTrucy’s mother, no, he had to go and get stupid and dump it all out rightthere, and Edgeworth recoils in shock but he doesn’t look hurt anymore sothat’s a little better even if Phoenix now has flung himself bodily out of thefrying pan and landed right in the gasoline that just got tossed on the fire.“Right, I’m gonna stop saying things and I’m just gonna call her and tell her Ifucked up and introduce the two of you.”
“Trucy and Apollo are - are related? You knew?”
Phoenix squeezes his eyes shut and hits thebutton set to speed-dial Thalassa.

They've been together nearly five years now, and Phoenix couldn't be happier than he is with Miles. Himself and Miles now function as surrogate fathers to two young adults together while also finally allowing themselves the freedom of a relationship at last. Trucy herself was the catalyst that finally nudged Phoenix into his confession, which spiralled quickly into quite the emotional spill between them, but the result was happy in the end. In the present, Miles returns home from a month long trip and Phoenix is quick to show him how much he missed him. Miles isn't complaining.
