Ness really loved butterflies and would often go hunting for caterpillars to keep them and watch them turn into one. But being…not the best at taking care of animals, she relied on Hilton to help her take care of them. Blue Morpho was her favorite to see, while Ulysses Butterfly was her second favorite.

Butterflies though !!! They are great, I find it silly that a lot of the Morpho butterflies are named after Greek myth. Like the Morpho menalaus, the Morpho achillies, and Morpho Telemachus.

HELL YESSSSSSS god all those games are iconic.... i'll be so honest i haven't played many nintendo games, i only got a switch this year LMAOOO and i've only played pokemon + splatoon 2.... i love kirby with all my heart though i have a little squeaky toy of him in my room and he is poyo poyoing all over the place

sea slugs are awesome too. look at those sluggos go eating sponges and becoming poisonous as a result. oh i also love sphinophores (hi portuguese man o' war) they're awesome

i rarely get to make things about my marine bio interest... but while playing webfishing i almost exclusively fish out at sea and i bother my friends about fun facts all the time

Other than the makeup color superficially invoking this butterfly, despite his efforts to change there’s actually no indication that young Moriarty has changed from what will later become his older self, and the absence of the overt butterfly imagery might be an attempt to throw you off. Like, when he talks about rot, he specifically says “the fruits of humanity’s labors,” which as a metaphor still aligns w the morphos which is said to particularly love rotten fruit. And also note, when I talk abt the correlated symbolism like pretty much any butterfly will eat rotten fruit or meat for hydration, it’s more that these particular butterflies are recorded as having an obvious preference for these things which it seems Moriarty’s symbolism obviously leans into cuz like his profile mentions his enjoyment of rot multiple times.

Morphos of course means change, and he talks about his ability to change/ seems to lash out at characters he sees as incapable of change. but even older Moriarty’s blue butterflies turn purple under certain conditions, and the one on his coffin in particular is turning purple, which invokes that it’s a change correlated to death imagery. So his older self implicitly still has him outsmarted in the metaphor department and isn’t any more or less leaning into this symbolism than he is. Old Moriarty’s cane has the chameleon on it which is an animal that can change color so again invoking that he’s just painting something to look different than it actually is. Although, the occasional purple of older Moriarty’s butterflies is inaccurate to purple emperor and a more fantastical color no natural butterfly has, young Moriarty’s makeup is the exact correct color to a perhaps uncanny degree but it’s also. Taking the form of. Literal clown makeup. Like there is Symbolism going on here but it’s hard to pinpoint as this solid identifiable thing bc there’s so many layers to it and at a certain point he’s just being silly.

Uuuuu its such a specific color. Moriarty’s makeup. It seems to be based on the purple emperor Apatura iris (likely not the smaller one ilia since the gold marks are more pronounced and striking on those) but since his older forms butterfly are some sort of morphos/emperor hybrid likely if we ever see his “butterfly of evil” it would be a unique creation using this base color, since for the most part none of the butterfly characters pull imagery from a singular butterfly but will often paint the outline of one butterfly with the colors of another

It’s purplish iridescence only shows when the light hits it right. Which is where the term apatura comes from, originally the word apaturia “deceiver” a very evil pun, “deceiving iris” both the goddess of the rainbow but the term for the colored part of the eye

It is known for being particularly attracted to rotten meat. Young Moriarty’s lines show a compounding obsession with rot as a concept

A possible fighting outfit for B in Magical School Girls! I want her to have an adaptation/metamorphosis-themed look, and I feel like butterflies are a really solid way to express that!

I also wanted her hair to slightly change (the size of the cast makes having alternate forms... inadvisable) but I’m worried it looks like twintails.

I really did it!!! I completed the first set this faebruary. I've been planning this because a set of comments in Discord inspired me to make a Fairy AU of Jak and Daxter.

It was hard to sort the characters based on the colors of their outfits or their personalities but I was able to prepare for it. I took inspiration from real-life insects for the wings and the flowers or plants for their outfits, I used flower language for reference. For Jak, he has the wings of a morpho butterfly, and the flower petals I use for his outfit are from the Gerbera Daisy. Gerbera Daisies or African Daisies symbolize innocence, purity, cheerfulness, and loyal love. The Ancient Egyptians believe that these daisies symbolize closeness to nature and devotion to the sun, whereas the Celts thought they lessened the sorrows and stresses of everyday life.

My OC, Jakleen is more of a gold color code type of girl so she gets to have marigolds on her outfit and a matching flower crown. Marigolds represent positive emotions, energy, beauty, warmth, creativity, a drive to succeed, and celebration of the dead, but they also symbolize darker emotions such as jealousy, grief, despair, and mourning. Because of their sun-like appearance, marigolds were often linked to the powerful strength of the sun and represent power, strength, and light that lives inside of a person. Her blue ulysses butterfly wings match Jak because they are twins.

Daxter's ottsel fur matches the color of the monarch butterfly so he can have wings based on it while his shirt was made from the petals of the tiger lily. Matching his loudmouthed and brash personality, tiger lilies symbolize confidence, pride, and wealth. He also wears accessories made out of precursor metal like the Mar twins because the fairy king, Damas adopted him.

Keira Hagai has the wings of a queen Alexandria birdwing butterfly and some parts of her ensemble were made out of violet flowers. Violets are most commonly associated with love but they can also symbolize honesty, protection, dreams, healing, remembrance, determination, and even the idea of setting goals. It really matches her because violets can also be associated with growth, expansion, and peace. They are often viewed as symbols of mental clarity.

Ashelin Praxis has been a flower among the thorns in the Krimzon Guard so her jacket is made from rose petals with a red rose and thorny prints to match her maroon dragonfly wings (Her father has cecropia moth wings). Red roses usually mean love and passion so it really matches her and her love for Torn.

Tess has a colorful but protective personality so she gets a pair of agrias butterfly wings and her outfit is made from the petals of the sunflower. Like her love for Daxter, sunflowers symbolize happiness, optimism, honesty, longevity, peace, admiration, and devotion.

Taryn is quite complicated but I am able to match her with a dahlia flower and her wings are based on a Mormon butterfly. Dahlias symbolize perseverance and the ability to overcome, just like Taryn's personality. They serve as a reminder of the inner strength everyone possesses, even in dark times. 

Torn, on the other hand, is very prickly like a cactus so I decided to match his wings to those of an Asian giant hornet while his outfit is made from the leaves of a flowering quince. Just like his role in the Underground (later, Freedom League), quince flowers are seen as a sign of perseverance in the face of adversity and the ability to cope with adversity. The plant reminds us even when things are difficult in one’s life, there is still great capability for greatness in everyone.

Jinx has an explosive personality so his wings are based on a painted jezebel butterfly and his outfit is made from the leaves of a thistle, which really matches him. Thistles symbolize aggressiveness, pain, protection, and pride.

Captain Phoenix had some demons of the past haunting him so I gave him the wings of a Mourning Cloak butterfly and his clothes are sewn from the leaves and petals of a hyacinth flower. By remembering how he failed to stop the Dark Warrior Program, the purple hyacinth specifically, represents sorrow, regret, and forgiveness.

Ximon is laid back and exceedingly friendly so I match him with the luna moth while his outfit is made from the leaves of a zinnia plant. Just like his friendship with Daxter, Zinnias are the flowers of friendship and they symbolize endurance and strong bonds.

My entomology cross stitch project, 3 years in the making! I started this project because I wanted to collect real specimens, but at the time it was too much money for the size of the collection I wanted! I had also just started cross stitching, my first project being a butterfly, so i kept at it and here we are! 

[The VW Beetle] was my husbands idea and at first I was like no that’s dumb but now I love it!

At the end, these past few months, I specifically looked for blue and purple insects to make the rainbow, not a ton of purple out there!

Not all pieces work out on the first try. . This is the female Ulysses butterfly, suggested by the lovely @rhicreations_by_rhi. It is one of several butterflies characterized by their iridescent blue wings. (The most commonly known is the Blue Morpho.) . I had to order in some new blue papers for this one, all ones that that I hadn't tried before, and when they finally arrived I was unfortunately disappointed. None of them had the right iridescent quality, and while this paper had the right hue of blue, it's still too dark. . As well, after I had already received this order of paper, I realized that the body has iridescent green on it as well, and I didn't have the right kind of green paper either. 🤦‍♀️ . Despite all that, I still decided to test out the cut. So while I need to keep looking for the right papers to use, at least I know this design is a keeper. . The butterfly which the wings of my fairy are based on is NOT the blue morpho 🦋, but actually the Ulysses Butterfly. The main differences appearance wise are the spots and the "tails" at the bottom of the wings which the blue morpho doesn't have. Can you tell the difference ?
