The World Series...

Baseball has been facing a bunch of problems lately, including longer than ever game times and a general lack of interest from many young people. The World Series has helped quell some  worries just because it was one of the most heart-attack inducing World Series of all time. 

However, I want to focus on the racist “slant-eye” gesture that the Astros’ Yuli Gurriel, a Cuban first baseman, did directed at the Dodgers’ Yu Darvish, a Japanese pitcher, during Game 3 of the WS. (I’m not going to post the photo of Gurriel doing the racist gesture, just look it up yourself.) Many websites have already done a really good job covering it. (The sources goes into further depth about problems the MLB has when it comes to issues of race and gender)

As an Asian American who was rooting for the Astros in this series because I am a Giants fan, I was really conflicted. I mean I didn’t actively feel offended by the gesture because I think most Asian Americans have had to deal with it and I for one am rather numb to it at this point, but I definitely felt something. It was some level of shock and some level of disgust and some other level of a feeling I can’t really describe. I think this quote kind of gets at it.

“In terms of immediate impact, Barbara Moon, an Asian-American Astros fan who typically holds up a Gurriel head during games, stopped doing so, saying her “heart kind of broke a little bit” due to Gurriel’s racist action.”

I think the most important issue is how Gurriel’s actions will and have already furthered the normalization of prejudices against Asian people. We should also be thinking about the kids; Gurriel’s gesture was broadcast on international TV. The one Asian kid who lives in Kentucky is gonna have to deal with this every day. 

Sports and sports fans in America have a lot of issues to deal with when it comes to not only prejudice against Asians, but all people of color.
