Partimos del campamento a las 3am sin visibilidad con esperanzas a que la nube fuera baja. Después de unas horitas sobrepasamos la nube y tuvimos un amanecer alucinante que nos dejo cargados con energía de la buena, para enfrentar la primera parte complicada, escalar una parte del glaciar que se había avalanchado hace algunos días y nos obligo a hacer un cambio a la ruta que teníamos pensada. A habit of mine is to carry a set of art supplies with me to keep my hands and mind curious if down time may arise when I’m traveling. I’m used to disappearing into my sketchbook while the world and its occupants spin around me in their own orbit. It’s not often I’m joined in the mark making. That solitude broke down this past spring at a long wooden table at @tamokhuset in Norway. . Our crew had been on a bender of weather days - I had finished my book, every yoga posture explored, and learning Norwegian was not coming together for me. So, I decided to take my jacket as a new canvas. I mapped out repeating patterns of ridges and clouds, and moved the sleeves around to imagine how the lines could connect when draped off my shoulders. Lost in thought, I didn’t notice the boys come to the table. . Soon, markers littered the liminal space between coffee mugs and splitboards - the new canvas for @harry_kearney , @timmytaussig , @bruhnsphoto , and @cedric.landry. Perhaps a bit hesitant at first, their hands placed a new story of their own upon their splits - maybe a memory of this trip, a fallen friend, or a playful pattern. We leaned them up on the wall and laughed as each board seemed a bit like a portrait of the rider; like a signature in the snow. . This was one of my favorite memories from that trip to Norway last spring. I’m so grateful to have gotten to travel with such a fun group to such a unique place… and even more thrilled to write (and illustrate) about it for the newest @thesnowboardersjournal issue 20.2. 😊 . Thank you to everyone who had a hand in this piece, in the making of the story and the sharing. 🙏 .
