The Sign Of Jonah

February 24, 2021, Wednesday  Wednesday of the First Week of Lent (Violet) CYCLE B - YEAR I RDGS: JON 3:1-10/ PS 51:3-4. 12-13. 18-19 GOSPEL: LK 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.  Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment  the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation  and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here.  At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here."

GOSPEL REFLECTION:

Jesus compares himself to Jonah, another sign, calling for conversion. Our reaction to this call to the conversion will be our own judgment. I ask for a listening heart, open to Jesus, and ready to change its ways.

The word of God can transform us. Jonah proclaimed God’s word and the people repented. Saint Teresa of Avila, a great mystic and reformer, drew her inspiration from the riches of Sacred Scripture. Do I allow the gospels to transform me?

PRAYER:

You, Lord Jesus, are the sign of signs. Those who go seeking further wonders have not truly seen you. In you, I find all that I need to be fully human and to find my destiny with God.

“The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.”...Luke 11:32

REFLECTION – “The conversion of a great city like Nineveh stuns us!   The message in any case is clear – collective choices are possible.   Today, however, unfortunately, a collective choice is clearly manifested only when a country declares war on another. Emmanuel Kant recognised the strength of a community that was eager to share the same values, Margaret Mead that of a small group determined to change the world.   The initiators of Congregations, of ecclesial movements, pious associations and social reforms shook the world with their community decisions.   Jesus’s pain at resistance to His teaching has a lesson for those who put on the helmet of ‘indifference’ or the blinkers of ‘apathy’ – the LUKEWARM!   Atheists and agnostics will rise from their graves to point to opportunities such people wasted.   AWAKE! Lukewarmness is SIN!”…Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil SDB

REFLECTION – “Am I attached to my things, to my ideas, closed?   Or am I open to the God of surprises?   Am I a stationary person or a person on a journey?….Do I believe in Jesus Christ and in what He has done?   He died, rose again… do I believe that the journey goes forth toward maturity, toward the manifestation of the glory of the Lord?   Am I capable of understanding the signs of the times and of being faithful to the voice of the Lord that is manifest in them?”…Pope Francis 13 October 2014 Better Your faithful love than life itself; my lips will praise You. PRAYER – Almighty God, our Father, You sent St Teresa of Jesus to be a witness in the Church to the way of perfection.   Sustain us by her spiritual doctrine and kindle in us, the longing for true holiness.   Through Christ, our Lord, in union with the Holy Spirit, God forever.   May the intercession of St Teresa be a source of strength, amen
