Happy 64th birthday to Ruby Bridges. Born on September 8, 1954, in Tylertown, Mississippi, Ruby Bridges was 6 when she became the first African-American child to integrate a white Southern elementary school, having to be escorted to class by her mother and U.S. marshals due to violent mobs. Bridges' bravery paved the way for continued Civil Rights action and she's shared her story with future generations in educational forums. #rubybridges #integration #southernhate #youngandbrave #greatblackwomen #blackhistory #blacklivesmatter #blackrevolutionaries #blackhistory #racismistaught #domesticterrorism #thesepeoplehadchildren #treasureourown https://www.instagram.com/p/BndEuMghZsZ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=guf4tumzfoms

On this date in 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered the National Guard to escort 9 black students into Little Rock Central High School. Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark,Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals also known as the "Little Rock Nine" faced massive resistance from the hate filled crowd. Elizabeth Eckford recounted her efforts that morning: “I walked up to the guard who had let the white students in.... When I tried to squeeze past him, he raised his bayonet and then the other guards closed in and they raised their bayonets. They glared at me with a mean look and I was very frightened and didn’t know what to do. I turned around and the crowd came toward me . . . . I tried to see a friendly face somewhere in the crowd—someone who maybe would help. I looked into the face of an old woman and it seemed a kind face, but when I looked at her again, she spat on me.” #littlerocknine #brownvsboardofeducation #centrallittlerockhighschool #makebeingblackinamericalegal #blackhistoryeveryday #racismistaught #thesepeoplehadchildren https://www.instagram.com/p/B2ynFRAlvqe/?igshid=1hg3sovsww6i4
