Low key this is embarrassing but I never learned a lot of normal people things. What sunblock do you use? How often is often enough to apply? How much SPF is good? Someone the other day told me I was supposed to wear it inside too and I can't tell if they were teasing me.

Is the sun really trying that hard to kill us? How tf did we even adapt to survive this long?

Im sorry this got LONG but I am giving you the info

Ok so I personally use soltan, its reasonably priced and broad spectrum. Whats best for you may depend where you are, be CAREFUL if you live in the US as many sunscreens lack broad spectrum protection or proper indicators to tell you if it has proper broad spectrum protection. At least last I checked it does not appear to be standardised like it is in other countries. (Someone pls let me know if this has changed or if there are any individual states that regulate this better)

You should reapply every 2-3 hours i think and after getting out of water if you go swimming. Yes its a lot. If you *have* to cheat, avoid direct sun, reduce how much you expose your skin. Also use mineral sunscreen if you are wearing makeup. Also grab yourself UV sunglasses and a big hat.

Aim for 50 spf AND 5 starts/whatever other indicators are relevant to where you live. Spf is sun protection factor, or in simple terms "how much extra time do I have before I burn". Stars are an indicator of how much UVA and UVB is absorbed in comparison with each other. This is important because not all sun damage is visible. If its got 5 stars you know that if you are applying sunscreen properly to avoid sunburn, that same level of protection applies to the unseen damage too.

Yes you should wear sunscreen indoors, and also year round. I understand this is quite demanding so again if you need to cheat: cover up in cooler weather, denim will block everything guaranteed. Do not be fooled by the season, if the sun is there it can still get you. When indoors, be mindful of how much sunlight is in your house and where you spend your time. If you want to spend a whole day lounging with the curtains open, consider doing it away from windows that get direct sunlight. Also consider your window coverings (also if its hot you may want to keep blinds and curtains closed anyway to reduce the heat indoors, so 2 birds one stone). If you are truly paranoid and also lazy like me, get yourself a sun lamp and never open your curtains 😂. But just closing curtain on the side the sun is on can do a lot to reduce how much sun is getting indoors. And again proper clothing can help you indoors.

If you wanna be super duper cheaty you can keep an eye on the UV index and also avoid peak sunshine between 10 am and 4 pm. Heres what the UV index can tell you:

Low, 0-2: At the low stage, experts advise you to wear sunglasses if the sun is bright. Use sunscreen and protective clothing if you burn easily.

Moderate, 3-5: At the moderate stage, you should cover up and use sunscreen. Avoid direct sunlight at midday, when the sun is most powerful. Stay in the shade.

High, 6-7: At the high stage, you should use all protection against sun damage (protective clothing, wearing a hat and sunglasses, using sunscreen). Limit time in the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Very high, 8-10: At the very high stage, you should be extra careful, using clothing, hats, sunscreen and sunglasses. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Your skin can burn quickly at this stage.

Extreme, 11+: At the extreme stage, you should use all methods of prevention. It will only take minutes of exposure to result in a burn. Don’t go out in the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wear protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. At this stage and all others, remember that snow, sand and water all increase UV exposure by reflecting the sun’s rays."

The sun IS a deadly lazer and the only reason we have survived as a species is because we only need to live long enough to reproduce and you can get that done before the skin cancer gets you. Its cumulative damage, so being lazy from time to time and cutting corners won't kill you on its own, but do it enough and it might catch up to you eventually, if you cut enough corners and live long enough. (And you don't have to be terribly old, the peak age is 85-89 but rates go up sharply at 20-24.)

But ANOTHER thing you can do to protect yourself is check your skin and learn the signs of skin cancer. Early detection is KEY and makes it very survivable (close to 100%!), especially for dark skinned people who tend to have lower rates of survival due to later detection! There is basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. The last is the most dangerous, accounting for 75% of skin cancer deaths and is caused by sun burn type damage.

"Basal cell carcinoma may appear as a small, smooth, pearly or waxy bump on your face or neck, or as a flat, pink/red- or brown-colored lesion.

Squamous cell carcinoma can appear as a firm, red nodule or as a rough, scaly, flat lesion that may itch, bleed and become crusty.

Melanoma usually appears as a pigmented patch or bump. It may resemble a normal mole, but usually has a more irregular appearance."

If in doubt, ask your doctor, also take pictures of any suspect moles so you can compare them over time. Very helpful if, like me, you are covered in hundreds of moles. Very tough to keep track of lmao.

Questions and Advices about Sunscreen

📷With the warmer weather, the sun is gradually increasing, and the clothes people wear are gradually reduced, and the topic of sun protection has once again become a hot topic.

This topic is both universal and always new, and every year new rumors and truths are revealed. The following is itechpanda's questions and answers about sun protection.

01 Is sunscreen for beauty? A: More than that.

The reason why many people don't pay attention to sun protection is that they think that "tanning is nothing at all", and even many men will think that doing sun protection is a matter of temperament. But first, you may not be clear about what UV rays may do to your appearance. In addition to the dark skin tone, the sun can also cause the skin to light age.

Ultraviolet light prompts premature aging changes in the skin. Manifested by rough skin, increased wrinkles and deep pigmentation, decreased skin elasticity, dilated or hyperplasia of capillaries, and erythema formation. In fact, more than 70% of people's skin aging is photoaging, rather than natural aging.

In addition, excessive sun exposure can not only lead to skin aging affecting the appearance, but also induce or exacerbate various light-related skin diseases.

Therefore, reducing excessive exposure to sunlight is necessary for anyone. Tanning is just the most intuitive indicator of whether a person knows how to effectively protect against suns: if you become tanned after every summer experience, then you certainly haven't learned how to effectively protect from the sun.

02 Do you need sun protection indoors? A: Yes.

The question is actually about whether ultraviolet light can penetrate glass. We know that the penetration ability of light is strengthened with the growth of wavelength in a certain range, the wavelength of UVC in ultraviolet light is only 100-280nm, and the ozone layer has been blocked and exhausted, and the UVB with a wavelength between 280-315 nanometers can reach the surface, but it cannot penetrate the glass, only the UVA with a wavelength of 315-400nm can penetrate the glass.

Although the intensity of ultraviolet rays has been much weaker than outdoors, the only UVA that penetrates the glass is the real culprit in causing skin photoaging. The reason is still related to the ability to penetrate.

UVB can only penetrate into the epidermis, in addition to excessive doses caused by sunburn, rarely lead to tanning or skin photoaging, can penetrate to the epidermal basal melanocytes, and even the dermis layer of collagen at the UVA, is the culprit that causes your skin darkening and sagging skin. It can penetrate glass, so if your indoor workstation is exposed to direct sunlight or less than 1.5 meters from the window, you still need to take sun protection measures, but SPF15/PA+ sunscreen or barrier cream is enough.

📷03 Do you need sun protection on cloudy days? A: Don't look at the weather, look at UVI.

Rainy weather is greatly weakened by the barrier of clouds, and the intensity of ultraviolet rays reaching the surface is greatly weakened. How do we tell if it's weak enough to require sun protection? Sunny days in Northern Europe and Australia are not the same, and cloudy days in the Sichuan Basin and cloudy days on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are not the same thing. Don't just look at the weather, the UV index (UVI) in the weather forecast can help you make a good decision.

UVI refers to the degree of possible damage to human skin by ultraviolet radiation when the position of the sun in the sky is the highest, the larger the value, the greater the damage, such as 0 at night, most parts of China are not often more than 10.

According to the WHO's recommendation, when UVI < 2, the impact on the human body is very small, you can not have sun protection, if the UVI ≥ 3, you need to take some sun protection measures.

📷04 Can sunscreen be applied once for a day?

A: Absolutely not.

Whether it is lotion, gel or spray, waterproof or not waterproof, there is no sunscreen can ensure that after hours of sun, wind, sweat mixing, still maintain a perfect protective film on the skin surface, so it can not guarantee such a long-term sunscreen effect. According to the Recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), when exposed to daylight, it is recommended to use:

1. At least SPF 15 or above 2. Broad-spectrum sunscreen 3. Reapply every 2 hours

Moreover, the way of application is also very exquisite, in addition to timely reapplying, the thickness of the application requires 2 mg per square centimeter, that is, the texture of the emulsion is about 1 cent of a coin face, and the thin texture of the shake may require more.

A: No.

The full name of SPF is the sun protection factor, rather than being a numerical value related to folding filter efficiency, SPF had a clear marginal effect, such that sunscreens from SPF15 presumably filtered 94% of UVB, whereas sunscreens from SPF30 filtered 97%. Sunscreen at extremely high SPF values may cost you double your money, but the protection that brings you is not double.

And, SPF is a value for UVB protection and PA for UVA protection ability is a value for true protection against tanning. Because UVA is the culprit that truly penetrates to the basal and dermal layers of the epidermis, causing increased melanogenesis and dermal collagen collapse.

Because the majority of photodermatosis is associated with both UVB and UVA, the intensity can be picked on demand, but the broad spectrum is a high priority and we neither want to be sun-exposed nor Tan, get older or want skin cancer, then we should try to choose a total sun protection product that blocks both UVB and UVA.

The Beast in The Cave: uh a guy goes on a cave tour and finds a creature that was like a human that got lost and adapted to its surroundings. 0/10 just because im pretty sure there was another one with this exact premise and neither of them were memorable at all.

The Alchemist: dude achieves immortality and lives in the narrators basement and has pledged to murder his entire lineage or something. 4/10 the alchemy stuff was actually kind of interesting

The Tomb: im pretty sure this is the one where a guy starts hanging out in a tomb and like travels back in time/becomes one of his ancestors? 5/10 if its the one im thinking of i did enjoy reading it

Dagon: guy lands on a mysterious island with signs of a long dead civilization. 1/10 i do not remember what happened in it

A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson: 0/10 i have no memory of this

Polaris: also 0/10 i forgot all about it

Beyond the Wall of Sleep: could be any of the dream focused ones. if its the one about the dude sailing into the void or whatever than 4/10 not too bad

The Strange High House in the Mist: if this is the one im thinking of, dude does a dangerous climb to find a mysterious house and meet the inhabitant who is kind of interdimensional and also being hunted by interdimensional things. also maybe the house eats people? 2/10

The Silver Key: another Randolph Carter one, and i think this is actually the one about him travelling back in time so idk what the other one was. 3/10

The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath: randolph carter goes on a quest in the dream world to find the gods of humanity and ask why they wont let him check out this cool city he can see from his window. lots of action and very wordy and went a lot of different places. 4/10 good read but extremely xenophobic

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward: guy investigates his ancestor who looks disturbingly like him, ancestor comes back to life and kills him and takes his place and a bunch of other stuff happens. mostly a dramatized genealogical study. 3/10 not bad, very suspenseful

The Colour Out Of Space: meteor lands on a farm, scientists get weirded out by it, everything in the area gets weird then dead, alien thing gets enough power from draining nearby life-forms to escape earth. fun twist ending. 4/10 bonus for being one of the better ones, detraction for writing out a 'rural accent'

The Descendant: nope, 0/10

The Very Old Folk: nope again, 0/10

History of the Necronomicon: very dry. fake history of lovecraft's fake book thats super important to a lot of the stories. 0/10

The Dunwich Horror: isolated witchy family has a kid who no one likes that grows up real fast. graphic descriptions of renovation. a horror gets unleashed on the area and the local folklore scholars have to deal with it. 1/10 nothing good enough to counter the xenophobia

Ibid: i remember this one. no idea what it's deal was. pseudo-bibliography? it was weird. 0/10

The Whisperer in Darkness: guy has a correspondance with another guy about local folk legends based on evil crab things. other guy gets straight up replaced by an evil crab thing and first guy doesnt even notice. imagine if you followed up on a scam email and didnt realize anything was up until you saw that the face of the dude you were talking to in person was a mask. 4/10 for the comedy this guy would not last in the internet age at all

At The Mountains of Madness: guy whines about penguins and how awful it would be if there were civilizations that predated humanity. also commits grave desecration. i get hit by the realization that if lovecraft was less of a racist coward he wouldve made a great speculative sci fi author. 3/10 i would love to watch that old asshole get absolutely torn to shreds by the monster fucker community

The Shadow over Innsmouth: Fish People! Leave Them Alone! Or Else! 5/10 the protagonist gets to live the dream by escaping human society and becoming an immortal fish person

The Dreams in the Witch House: dude rents an objectively haunted room, doesnt listen to people trying to help him, gets murdered by a weird rat. later they find a shit ton of bones in the attic. 2/10 meh

Through The Gates of the Silver Key: Randolph Carter transcends time and space, then de-transcends time and space and immediately gets stuck on another planet in the distant past, makes a long and difficult journey back to earth to find that his estate is being divided amongst his heirs. the comedy potential of a man stuck in an alien body dealing with a legal system that has declared him dead is not examined. 2/10

The Thing on the Doorstep: narrator's good friend marries a fish person witch who steals his body. thats basically it. 3/10. at this point im like wow these narrators really refuse to believe the heavily foreshadowed supernatural explanations that turn out to be correct huh.

The Evil Clergyman: dude is in a room. some ghosts (?) show up. dude has a UV light for some reason. Gets his face stolen i guess and just has to live with it. 5/10 for being absolutely buck wild and refusing to explain anything

The Book: nope 0/10

The Shadow Out Of Time: dude gets his body stolen by ancient scholar species. agonizes about it for a while. finds archaeological evidence of said species. finds a book he wrote while living with said species. almost gets eaten by something. 3/10 more cool speculative sci fi but lame protagonist

The Haunter of the Dark: you'd think id remember it bc this was the last one and i read it last night. oh wait, nvm i do remember it. dude finds an old box in a run down culty church and unleashes a horror that then comes and fucks him up. 1/10 meh.

Meteor smashes into Jupiter - and NASA's Juno spotted the impact Jupiter plays a huge part in protecting all the other planets, especially the four inner rocky bodies – Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars – from deadly space rocks. Only the Sun has a greater gravitational pull than Jupiter in the solar system. The gas giant has such a strong gravitational pull that it helps to keep the asteroid belt – located between Mars and Jupiter– in place so space rocks are not flying around the solar system. Its immense gravity also pulls in loose comets, meteors and asteroids as they pass by. However, spotting a space rock colliding with Jupiter is extremely hard. Over the last decade, only six impacts have been seen on Jupiter as an impact can last just milliseconds. Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) astronomer Dr Rohini Giles, lead author of a new study, said: “Jupiter undergoes a huge number of impacts per year, much more than the Earth, so impacts themselves are not rare. “However, they are so short-lived that it is relatively unusual to see them. Only larger impacts can be seen from Earth, and you have to be lucky to be pointing a telescope at Jupiter at exactly the right time. “In the last decade, amateur astronomers have managed to capture six impacts on Jupiter.” However, last Spring, NASA’s Juno spacecraft spotted a bright flash in the clouds of Jupiter. Using the SwRI-led instrument, Ultraviolet Spectrograph (UVS), on Juno, the team were initially studying auroras on Jupiter.
