Highly recommended My curiosity piqued, I bought this on the merits of its great title alone. And subsequently was most glad that I did, as I found this book very very interesting. It was published approximately 11 years after the end of WWII, and bears a certain attitude unique to it being so relatively recent. The author was t-h-e-r-e and expertly describes his personal view of a window into time. Go to Amazon
A great book about submarine and antisubmarine warfare in WWII. This is a really excellent book about the U-boat and anti-U-boat war in the Atlantic in WWII. Although it's focus is on how the U-505 was captured by the antisubmarine Task Group under Adm. Gallery's command and his own direct decisions which culminated in the capture, the book encompasses a lot more. It discussed the broad context and history of the submarine war in the Atlantic from both the U.S. and german points of view; discusses submarine design, weapons and tactics; antisubmarine weapons and tactics; the history, personnel and war cruises of the U-505 leading up to its capture;and the history and actions of the Task Group. Throughout the book, the people are well discussed. Ultimately, the activities of the capture are described in great detail from the U.S. Navy's and the U-boat's perspectives. The writing is clear. Overall, the book is very well researched, organized, written and exciting to read. Go to Amazon
Liberty Ship veteran WW2 I sailed North Atlantic and Arctic waters, ultimatly as an American 2nd Mate on Liberty Ships, always in RN convoys and was never aware of my felow countrymens presence to our south until reading this most enlightening book, now nearing my final port of call in my mid 90’s. British ports, Murmansk, Archangel, Normandy (Twice before the Pattons break out at St. Lo), Antwerp November 28 until Christmas eve 1944 when we had to skedaddle because of the German break through in the Ardennes Forest December 16 in their atempt to retake this key allied port, later known as “The Battle Of The Bulge.” Antwerp suffered terribly from V bombs, mostly V2’s. In my mid 90’s I think that I can safely say that I am one of few still living who actualy saw not one but two make their supersonic approach and explosion in the blink of an eye. It was just by chance and you had to be looking in the dirrection of their apprach. I saw a movie in the Rex Theater a day before it took a dirrect hit by a V2 killing some 550 mostly Allied military personel. Being in the right place at the right time has served me well ‘or the years and here I am. Thank you Admiral Gallery for your “salty” saga. where 'er you rest may the winds be fair and the seas calm. A dramatic detailed story of US and German submarine forces from a naval insider. This story is one of the best world wwII books I have read. Having seen and been through the U505 in Chicago years ago I wished this book had reached me before I did so. It beats any military saga I've read thus far. Go to Amazon
Gallery is one heck of a writer ! An honest page turner of a book. More than a tale, an education of war at sea. I really enjoyed the rich Go to Amazon
Quite Good This is a very well told story. I'm a WW2 amateur history buff but this book is filled with facts of which I was completely unaware. The are a few places where the narrative gets a bit dry but that is a nit pick. I recommend it. Go to Amazon
A Different Look at WWII A very enjoyable as well as interesting and thought-provoking book. I visited the Museum as a child and remember walking through the submarine. I'd love to go back now after reading this book. I'd never read about the importance of the sea in war thought I've read a lot about WWII . Adm Gallery writes in an informative yet interesting style and includes a number of amusing anecdotes that add a lot to the book. He is also not afraid to give his personal feelings about the whole subject of war and how the U-505 is a fitting tribute to all submariners. Go to Amazon
Hind sight is usually 20/20. The allies could have captured more German submarines earlier in the war. I thought the information as seen from the U505's crew was quite good and filled in a lot of holes in what I had previously read about this incident. Go to Amazon
