More ideas for this one shot that I’m throwing around in the process of attempting to write:
(looking for context? all of my headcanons & updates for this fic are tagged under #in the dirt !)
House coping with his grief and leg pain by obsessively rotating between every hobby known to man (cooking again, home renovation, woodworking, raising chickens, astrophotography, canning his own jams and preserves, pastry making, et cetera). When Thirteen first comes, the house is in shambles more often than not because of this
Thirteen convincing House to show her how to drive his bike before her Huntington’s gets too bad
House teaching Thirteen how to play the piano
House and Thirteen watching a shitty medical drama together in the evenings and making corrections every five seconds
Thirteen dragging House on an impromptu trip somewhere exotic and far-away because she can tell he’s sad (missing Wilson) and needs to get out of the house
(Oh my god that just made me imagine the two of them in Vegas. They’d rob everyone blind w their poker skills)
Thirteen definitely broke up with Amy to save them both from the pain of her Huntington’s before House finds her alone. House makes it his personal mission to get them back together by whatever means necessary as soon as he realizes this. Shenanigans ensue.

Beloctober Day 11: Musical
This is short and kind of cracky but just roll with it.
---
“Sire?” Kikimora ventured tentatively. “Don’t you think perhaps it might be time for you to go to sleep?”
The emperor’s head snapped towards her, slightly manic look in his eye. “Nonsense, Kiki. I’m in the middle of something.”
Kikimora hummed pensively, trying to pick out the right words for the argument she was apparently going to have. The emperor was, in her humble-yet-entirely-correct opinion, the hardest working person on the entirety of the Boiling Isles. Quite often, unfortunately, to his own detriment. She wasn’t sure what he was working on specifically at the moment, only that he’d been at it for over thirty-six hours.
Usually, she would just leave him to it – he’d pass out eventually. And after that it was only a matter of letting him reach a deep enough sleep where when she woke him up to politely suggest he relocate himself to his bed, he’d be too disoriented and groggy to argue. Presently, however, whatever he was working on involved substances that she knew for a fact could be volatile. Which, when combined with someone suffering from severe sleep-depravation, did not a good situation make.
“My liege,” she tried again, gently. “Do you know what time it is?”
(Or what DAY it is?” she wondered privately.)
The emperor paused, looking distant and contemplative even from behind his mask. “Erm…” he said quietly, “I’m not sure… one moment…”
Absently, he wandered away from his workstation, and Kikimora, curious and a bit suspicious, trailed behind. He made a small motion with his left hand, and she jumped slightly as an opaque screen popped up between them. She was confused for a second or two until she saw the emperor’s silhouette removing his mask. She was then promptly confused for different reasons, but at least she understood why he’d erected a barrier between them – he was ensuring that his face remained obscured.
(He’s got a lovely profile, she mused, staring at the screen. This was the closest she’d ever gotten to seeing his face.)
He gestured again, and to her mounting befuddlement a new shape materialized behind the screen with him. It was large, bigger than she was, honestly, and the emperor needed two hands to even hold it. No sooner did she realize what it was she was looking at and she was nearly bowled over by a wall of sound.
It was a tuba. Emperor Belos, ruler of the Boiling Isles and messenger of the Titan, was presently shredding it on a Titan-damned tuba. She hadn’t realized that feat was even possible.
Served her right for assuming there was positively anything her emperor couldn’t do, she supposed. The question of ‘but WHY though??’ was still blaring in her head, but she could admit it was impressive to witness nonetheless.
Roughly forty-five seconds later, she got her answer as to “why”: From somewhere down the hall, deeper into the castle, she heard someone (that sounded like Lilith Clawthorne – Titan she sounded utterly bestial) bellow out a completely irate, “WHO’S PLAYING THE TUBA AT 2:41am??!”
Kikimora stared, astounded. For several weeks now, she’d been having coven scouts come to her with complaints of loud noises in the middle of the night. One particular scout (she wanted to say his name had been “Steven” or something like that, but she wasn’t sure), had postulated that it sounded like someone playing a brass of some sort, like a euphonium, maybe. Already in the habit of wearing earplugs to bed herself, she brushed off the complaints – and Steven’s nonsensical speculation – as unimportant and ridiculous.
…it would seem she’d just found the phantom brass-player. Looks like she owed Steven an apology.
The emperor sent his tuba back to wherever he’d summoned it from, replaced his mask, and dissipated the screen.
“It’s 2:41, Kiki,” he informed her assuredly.
“…I see,” she replied weakly. “Thank you, Sire.”
---
A/N: I’ve always lowkey headcanoned that the main nine covens are the main nine because they’re all tracks Bel is proficient in. Running with this, on top of being good using Bard magic, he can also play several instruments.
And that includes the tuba!

HEADCANON:
Nico saying "I smell like death and animals fear me for it" is incorrect. Here's reasons why:
1. It's really no secret at this point that Nico is the most powerful demigod alive in-canon. He's so powerful that he has enough reserve strength and vitality (after recovering as much as he possibly could from Tartarus, starvation, and using the seeds in the state he was in. You don't ever fully recover from things like those) to constantly have his fear aura and cryokinesis emanating low-key, kind of like his wavelength.
But, it's at its lowest when he's with Will/Jason/Hazel/Reyna/Gleeson/whoever you ship him with, but never fully off. The fact that he emanates an aura puts him one step closer to god than mortal by the way.
ANYWAY, the constant emanation of the fear aura definitely makes animals skittish, but as he doesn't really let it off when he's alone with animals, they crowd him and glomp him whenever he's alone with them.
2. A lot of the animals he interacts with are probably animals tied to gods who don't have the best of relationships with Hades.
This one should be pretty self-explanatory. When you make an enemy of a god, you make an enemy of practically everything they represent (imagine permanently pissing off Hygeia or Asclepius... yeah, let's not).
Think of Annabeth and cows. Her Bovine Majesty, Hera, that goat skin gal, Queen of the gods, doesn't like Annabeth, and cows, by extension, do not (why are there so many commas???). The difference here is that Hera actively does things to screw around with Annabeth, and the only thing stopping her from screwing up Annabeth's relationships and (eventual) marriage is Athena giving her the look. Enough about my Annabeth|Hera head-canons though.
So whenever Nico interacts with a horse and equine creatures, or an eagle, or a cow, they get skittish and violent because of the gods they're tied to not liking Hades, and by proxy, him (exception here is Zeus, who genuinely dislikes Nico and would kill him if that didn't mean dying at Hades' hands, quite literally btw).
3. Animals don't really fear death (itself), which Nico represents.
Here's an important distinction for you and a head-canon from me (one I might write a piece on): Hades' children are representations of death itself, while Thanatos' children, as children of the god of death, represent it's causes.
I don't want you to think of to confuse it with him repping death by old age (that would be children of Geras).
Anyway, all creatures seem to take comfort in death, and thus Nico. And when an animal is comfortable with you, it tends to either leave you to your business, or seek your attention.
This one is cracky and feels like something I'd write a piece for at 3AM when I can't sleep.
4. This one is about Artemis|Nico.
Basically, as a sort of apology to Nico cause she knew what it meant to take away the only person he had at the time (and for a long time, really), I head-canon that Artemis has marked Nico with one of her blessings (a boon for my Hades players out there).
This specific mark is the one that numbs wild animals'/animals with violent dispositions' instinct to attack creatures they perceive as "dangerous".
Animals aren't daft. They can tell a dangerous individual, and some attack on sight to get the upper hand. Of course, Nico is too powerful for a non-mythical beast to so much as scratch him (he wouldn't kill them, just scare them off).
Anyway, with the mark, wild animals basically act as their domestic counterparts would around Nico.
I head-canon that when he first started shadow-travelling and would wind up passed out on totally different continents or in different places, he woke up one day in Tsavo East National Park with man-eating lions (look it up, fairly interesting) curled up around him and purring.
Anyway, now that we've dived into my mind and swam steadily downwards, we've finally reached the bottom where one thing is left: SHITPOSTING. Let's do it.
Animals when nico's fear aura is on: I do not know this man. I could see him walking down the streets and I would not recognise him. Sorry to this m–
Animals when nico's fear aura is low: cuddle time. Time to cuddle. Yup. Did someone say snuggling? Come here, boyo *glomps said boyo*
Nico:
Nico: so do you like me or not???
Zeus [on mount olympus]: I think it's about time I sent an eagle to pluck his ey–
(ground rumbles)
Zeus [nervously]: *clears throat* –to pluck the twigs out of the boy's hair, why is he so bad with maintaining his hair?
(Will is doing some stuff for a Veterinarian son of kymopoleia. Nico accompanies him to the vet's like the supportive boyfriend he is)
Will: why are you covered in cats???
Nico [covered in cats and enjoying every second of it]: cause you're giving the dogs a check-up, doctor
(Will got turned on when nico said doctor, guys, don't blame me)
(Hades and Hera get into a cat fight. It's for a very petty reason; their pet peeves with each other's children)
Hades: time-out! Can't we just try to get along now that our boys are dating each other?
Hera [pensive; the expression looks fake]: *adjusts goat skin on shoulders*
Hera: . . . no
(Cat fighting continues)
(Snow-white!Nico AU with Reyna and Hazel as main supporting cast, Percy as prince, and Hera as misunderstood evil queen with her own character arc? Closer than you'd think)
Reyna: stop singing nico
Nico: why?
Hazel: You're covered in birds nico. BIRDS, PLURAL!
Nico: makes me even more fly :)
Percy: omg literally so hot *swoons*
Hera: *strokes cow behind ears* can we skip to the part where he eats the apple and gets trampled by my trusty cow?
(The story falls apart. Not even the Apollo kids can save it. Lesson is not to let the aphrodite cabin do storytime at the campfire).
Hazel: oh, I didn't know you had pets, Nico
Nico: I don't
Hazel: why all the random animals, then
Nico:
Nico: you're not trying to kick out my other visitors, are you
That's it, guys. Deuces. Yes, some of the head-canons here might feature in my next nico-centric (ooohhhhh, *interest sounds*).
I'd like to do more posts like these, but they're a bit time-consuming to write up. It's still so worth it though.
Should I do more like these? (The "head-canon/opinion dump-into-shitpost" format). You tell me. I mean, I'll still make them, just more frequently if yes is the answer.

Hi! A fan of your writing here. I just love the way you write Caroline. An Avoidable Heart is my comfort fic and I am constantly in awe with the way you write and craft the dynamics in that story. Caroline's inner monologue is just priceless and God! I just love that intro scene where Caroline is walking into the Mikaelson compound with vampires and hybrids in the surrounding ready to pounce on her.
I would love to hear how you would have visualized Caroline crossing over into TO or not? Like in what season and why? How it would have likely gone?
Thank you!
First of all lovely anon gimme a moment to breathe, asdfghjkl why are people so lovely 😭😭🥺✨ It means sooo much to me that you’d take the time to jump into my inbox and send these kind words, like please I’m not worthyyyyy, But you make me smile and feel really freaking warm so *handcuffs your hand to mine* you aint leaving 💖✨💞🙃
But OK ALSO oh my god dude THAT CAROLINE WALTZS INTO THE COMPOUND AND TAKES ON A COUPLE HUNDRED VAMPIRES BY HERSELF SCENE???? Ughhhhh I’m sorry but I have SUCH a boner for Caroline in that, like my badass -I admit kinda op- QUEEN IS HERE and she’s fucking shit up, I’m sorry but I love that scene so much it’s so dear to me I was killing myself over how self-indulgent and grossly Over powered Caroline is but like idgaf man it’s such a hot scene and Caroline is practically invincible and we just love to see that, so seriously lovely anon, you telling me you LOVE that scene??? Puts the biggest smile on my face and reassures me a LOT bc I was whining and cribbing over how absolutely unbalanced that scene is to literally everyone BUT LIKE YOU JUMPING OUT OF NOWHERE and pointing that exact scene UGHH…...meant to fucking be the both of us 💖💞✨
And ALSO Caroline’s monologue is quite honestly the easiest inner monologue out of the three voices I wrote for that work, Klaus’s is the real pain in the ass tbvh like it is NOT easy writing pretentious besotted losers with a Kardashian complex especially when you need to make them sound cool when they’re the lamest OP dude bros to ever exist - and no I don’t hate Klaus although I seem to try my darndest to convince ppl I do- I just personally believe that a feral fucker like that with a thousand years of existence under his belt can grow a pair and graduate from his kindergarten level of emotional maturity to adult sometime soon, But then on the flipside he’s so grossly adorkably smitten and feral for Caroline plus hella horny for her all the time that its usually easy to write the trashed and devoted idiot he is into something pretentious and powerful and potent when relating to his unflappable arrogance and his narcissism, but sometimes I also need him to be *deep* and ffs profound for the sake of the plot and jfc my muse just wont work with me on that, she’s like I’m sorry I’m not about to bust my ass to make this mongrel intelligible like no sir all I wanna do is make him uncomfortably horny for Caroline and leave him like that.
So smh yeah the struggle is real….but lmao Caroline is just so precious and fiercely protective and just so achingly lonely in that story, so desperate for connection and trust and intimacy yet so guarded and impervious to everyone like it hurts me to write her like that but it really challenges me as an author to balance out her inherent light with the “void” I create in her and through her, so yeah it’s a very fulfilling task and I wouldnt change it one bit, and also I had to balance out her physical op-ness w half a millennium of the ugliest emotional trauma lol so I guess that figures, but the point being….once again I am overjoyed knowing that you liked a facet of the story that I tried so hard to make as authentically Caroline and achingly real and moving as I can and I cannot possibly feel more accomplished than rn for it so ty ty ty ty for reaching out to me and telling me *tackle hugs* It makes me GIDDY knowing that you enjoyed that particular part of the story like ugh stab me please you're too sweet.
And ok NOW, coming to The Originals part of the ask, (also please note that when I say TO headcanon; Hope does not exist, Hayley is a dead in a ditch and ofc Klaus will stop being that lil bitch they tried to pawn off as Klaus in TO)
HEADCANON 1
Honestly my biggest headcanon when it comes to TO crossovers somehow always include non-humanity!Caroline like it’s just so perfect to me?? The opportunity to make shit BLOW UP b/w them like imagine the DEBAUCHERY, the heat, the SEXUAL TENSION, the repression of one Klaus Mikaelson, the EXPLORATIONS, and omg the role reversal when Klaus has to be the voice of moral reason between them and not bc he believes Caroline would not be able to stand herself if she does something heinous and monstrous but bc he wants her to be completely and utterly herself, and yk *aware*, when she DECIMATES ppl to the ground and is in full-on predator mode, like he wants her monster to come out and play with him when no part of Caroline is locked away or suppressed, so obviously when she is w/o her humanity KLAUS exercises restraint on her behalf, like can you imagine that, Klaus restraining himself and being the vague, extremely broken and just largely inaccurate moral compass between the two of them for ALL the wrong reasons- and the entirety of NOLA just standing there watching him herd this baby vampire who seems to be intent on riling him up and angering him when all she is doing is giving him a massive hybrid hard on, like IMAGINE THE GOODNESS of non-humanity Caroline wrecking NOLA and Klaus letting her wreck it bc he is helpless in the face of Caroline Forbes and also bc he is quite honestly *enjoying* the debauchery himself so why put a damper on the festivities.
-I might wanna add that I favour this headcanon a lot bc I genuinely do not even remotely *like* the idea of NOLA as Klaus's chosen place to set his roots so like I would love Caroline going to NOLA and destroying everything there just bc I detest NOLA and the storyline behind it in TO. (yes is it petty? Obvi, but like I am a petty soul and I make no apologies ma’am)
HEADCANON 2
So yeah that’s my main TO headcanon, but my other one being, one I talk about very frequently, scream about in tag rants to an obsessive level, and like this is a cracky one but still very valid, where Caroline rolls up to NOLA humanity intact and all, finds Hayley preggo and is just laughing her fucking ass off bc anybody ANYBODY, with half a brain and a two minute convo w klaus would know how UTTERLY stupid the entire baby shit is especially when it’s with an immemorable one night stand, and Caroline’s just losing her shit about how like an entire city is obssessed w this baby and she just straight up tells Klaus he’d SUCK as a dad (which he really does tho like he was a shitty fucking dad canonically too) and Klaus is just like *sigh* girl tell me about it. I mean basically he’s finally relieved that someone is on his side about the whole baby thing and how he definitely does not want his entire millennium of life to finally sum up to this one squalling leaking stinky infant/unicorn Hayley is apparently baking in her oven, and I say this headcanon is cracky bc klaus would never have put up w this mess long enough for Caroline to come in and sort it out, there’s this preferred method of disposal of his called heart ripping that would've been employed quite early on and honestly saved us all a lot of brain cells and minused years of life, bc let’s be real any Klaus who’s NOT a lil snivelling bitch wearing a Klaus skinsuit would’ve yeeted the baby and the mama first chance he got, and that’s just how I see it.
Lmao I really hope I didnt scare you away w my *strong* opinions Ik they can be a bit much but I enjoy having them so theyre not going anywhere, anyways this ask answer got WAYYYY too long but I’m hoping I answered your question well with this or atleast left you slightly confused and bemused over my feral screaming....either ways I’m really really really happy to have got your ask and the chance to rant so much bs, Twas cathartic and honestly I had nothing to do today so I was more than happy to dish this baby out for you. Thank you so much sweet anon for putting a smile on my face today I am absolutely HONOURED by your words you’sa cutie 💖💞✨🗣🗣

In twiffon, what are the exvengers reactions right now? Most are in prison, though I think romonoff is still in the wind, but they must be getting a reality check, at least some of them somewhat . Is Sword still guarding them? How did their court cases fall out, and were they still expecting to get out of them until verdicts were read? I'm sorry if I missed this in one of the chapters, but I am curious.
This is the sort of thing I prefer to leave up to the reader, friend.
TWiFFON’s meant to be shameless self-indulgence. Meant to be fun to both read and write, and…the original Avengers lineup is mostly exhausting to write for this AU. [Except for Thor, who’s great as an outsider alien POV and whose character is surprisingly fun to play with.]
There’s also the fact that they’re not actually relevant to the plot, after the Civil War arc. Add in how much energy it takes for me to write them as respectfully as I can while still sideyeing their decision-making skills, and all in all it’s the exact opposite of a fun thought exercise. What I mentioned in-story is the extent of what I’m willing to delve into.
As such, the ‘canon’ version of what’s going on with them is basically up to you.
That being said, I do have a few headcanons as to how they’d react to the whole ‘Thanos’ situation.
Remember how TWiFFON’s a cracky spitefic? How it’s meant to be a crack at the writers’ continuity issues between movies, and my attempt to try and add a tinge more real-world logic [even if only of the ‘actions have consequences’ thing that the MCU seems to forget] to this AU?
Because that’s a very large part of this what-if.
.
Remember how Tony’d tried to warn the Avengers of aliens before? And how they’d shrugged him off? How they thought they could take whatever came for them?
Yeah.
In this AU, Tony doesn’t get an “I told you so”.
In this AU, Tony’s vindication comes with the goddamn alien army knocking at their door and asking for him personally.
While Tony was kinda freaked out by the whole ‘oh shit Thanos knows my name’ thing, the rest of the world is just s c r e e c h i n g and that Thanos made a crack at the Avengers was just a twist of the knife for some of the original members of the team because this is being broadcast live around the world and what does it say that the Big Bad considers them as barely worth mentioning, apparently considered Tony the closest thing he had to an equal?
…and then
AND THEN things get real, talk’s wrapping up and Thanos is going “resistance is futile you guys are hilariously outnumbered and outclassed” because everyone finally see what they’re up against and things aren’t looking good because holy crap the entire planet’s surrounded by a force that makes New York look like a playground fight and no moment could have hammered the point Tony had been trying to make more than the reality of the situation that was now upon them
and Tony basically goes “well fuck you we’re going to fight anyway”
goes “you have an army? Funny. So do I.”
and here’s the thing that’s key to this scene: Tony’s a) a very unreliable narrator, and b) great at showmanship.
This whole time, the audience might not have picked up on it because he is blissfully oblivious to how many people have unironically compared him to comic book villains, but Tony is very very good at looking like he is in control of the situation. Like he knows what he’s doing, like he’s got some sort of master plan in the works [which, to be fair, he kinda does— it’s just that his plan begins and ends with ‘STOP ALIENS FROM INVADING MY HOME ALL THE DAMN TIME, PLEASE AND THANK’].
Which, combined with the last time they’ve dealt with him, paints an…interesting picture.
And a bit of a conundrum, because Team Cap’s not exactly a fan of Tony— but at this point, he’s literally the only one staring down the head honcho of the invading force, so.
Fun times.
tl;dr: nobody’s having a good day, but Team Cap’s also got an extra dash of salt of the “oh shit he was right” variety in this universe.

2, 4, 6, and 19?
askldfja thank u friend!
2. What’s next on your ‘to-read’ list? (Fan fiction or otherwise)
I’ve got a couple on the list as far as fanfic is concerned!
All for One, the newest in the Team Rebuilding series by LadyShelley
The latest chapters in Reprise IV by @elfpen
Remedial Jedi Theology  by MarbleGlove
For non-fanfic, I’d really like to get around to reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins at some point, as I’ve heard it’s quite good.
4. What fandom’s/ship’s fan fiction do you read the most?
That really depends on what my current hyperfixation is at any particular point in time haha. Currently, though, (to no one’s surprise) that would be Teen Wolf. I don’t usually seek out any particular ships for teen wolf, but I do have a soft spot for post-series (and post-war) future fic with some soft, supportive Scott/Malia. (And at least one kid! because dangit scott would be an absolutely wonderful dad, pls let him have chidren!!)
6. What’s the last thing you read that made you laugh?
“Iron-Clad Secret Identity” by @cattyk8fic! Very cracky batfamily fic, but gosh I cackled
19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?
Okay, so I don’t know about favorite, but I do have one about Mason from teen wolf that I’m particularly fond of...
SO, we’re introduced to Mason in “The Benefactor” -- he’s Liam’s friend, he’s vaguely concerned about Liam’s recent v weird behavior, and (as we learn later in the episode in his convo w/ Lydia) one of his major character traits is that he cares about people and wants to help. Elsewhere in the ep, Scott et al concoct a plan to keep Liam from hurting anyone during the full moon by luring him to fake party. Liam then tells Mason about the party invite, and Mason accidentally throws a wrench in the entire plan by inviting, according to the episode, “everyone,” and turning the fake party into a very real party.
The thing is, this doesn’t seem in line w/ Mason’s character that we see in the rest of the series -- while he does go to Sinema on occasion and seems to enjoy that sort of thing, he’s not really the guy who organizes all the parties. What he is is the guy who’s main defensive mechanism is to learn everything about everything, just in case.
So. What does he know? We know that he knows about what went down at Devenford Prep and why Liam was kicked out of school. It doesn’t seem too unlikely that he also knows about all the bullying that Liam was the target of after the incident. He might even know about the event that we see the flashback to in 6B, where Brett and a bunch of other lacrosse players apparently lured Liam to the abandoned zoo and beat him up in revenge.
It’s also reasonable to assume that Mason attended BHHS for the 1st semester of his freshman year, as there’s no indication that he’s a transfer like Liam. Which would mean that he was around for the events of 3A and B, and likely knows that Scott’s the captain of the lacrosse team, and that he has a clique of friends that are always hanging out with him. He’s also probably heard some rumors about them, b/c you cannot tell me that there isn’t an active rumor mill among BHHS students. So it’s not unreasonable to assume that, even if Mason doesn’t know that Kira is Scott’s girlfriend, he at least knows that she’s part of Scott’s friend group.
It’s also likely that Mason knows that Liam was injured because he “went up against two juniors” (incl Scott) during lacrosse practice. Maybe he heard it from Liam, maybe he heard it from someone else, but again -- rumor mill. Liam went to the hospital because of that, and news like that gets around.
Now, FINALLY, we get to the actual headcanon bit of this (and yikes I’ve been super longwinded, sorry about that!). Anywho. My headcanon is that Liam tells Mason that he’s been invited to a party that “everyone’s going to” by Kira. This sets off multiple alarm bells for Mason, who like I said, probably knows that Kira’s either the girlfriend or close friend of the upperclassman lacrosse star who apparently injured Liam during practice. This is feeling very familiar, and he starts to worry that this may end up being a repeat of the whole zoo incident.
So, he asks around. If “everyone’s” going to this party, then someone else will have heard of it, right? But no one has. Which is, uh. Concerning.
But Liam’s already on the way to the “party” when he figures this out, so he does the next best thing -- he invites everyone he knows and tells them to invite people too, and he turns the fake party into a real party to provide a buffer for his best friend. And then the first thing he does when he gets there is look for Liam, to make sure he’s okay.
(And this headcanon is even backed by the text a little with the vaguely suspicious way he acts towards Lydia at first, countering her “I can’t be bothered to keep track of one freshman” with “but you knew he was a freshman”)
Anywho this went REALLY long sorry, but also I love Mason a lot and he’s so smart and also a fantastic friend pass it on.

do you think it's open to interpretation whether dean and cas are in love with each other? Like is it just as valid an interpretation to say they're not? Whenever anyone calls destiel "one interpretation" or whatever, my hackles rise. And I know I'm overly sensitive about this stuff, being a gay and whatnot, but I mean, is it? Am I just insecure because my otp isn't canon, or is destiel really more valid than other readings or what? What do you think?
Hi there. :)
I’m gonna give you the diplomatic, academic answer, and then I’m gonna give you the grumpy-ass queer lady answer. Hold on to your horses. :)
Polite answer:
All media is open to interpretation. Of course, this doesn’t mean that all interpretations are equally valid, or equally supported by canon, especially when taken in context of the entire body of the work in question.
For example, I replied to a post the other day about 13.17, and that scene where Dean and Sam are-- on first glance-- rather disrespectful of the extremely rare and valuable books in the bunker... but in context of the rest of the episode and the rest of the season, that montage wasn’t about disrespecting those books at all. It had less than nothing to do with the books themselves as objects or as sources of knowledge that should be properly cared for and respected. But out of context it kinda looks that way. So, based on that one short gif set, it might seem like a perfectly legitimate interpretation to suggest that Sam and Dean were careless with the immense knowledge and invaluable books they’ve found themselves in possession of. But in the larger context of their entire history, of all their interactions with the bunker and the untold store of knowledge it holds,  and with the context of the specific reasons for their frustration in that particular scene, it seems obvious that there’s a lot more to the story, you know?
You could technically argue just about any weird headcanon can be supported by canon. I wrote this weird little post right after 12.11 aired, and it sat in my drafts for a good long time before I finally posted it. But there’s nothing in canon that legit quashes the possibility that endgame fish!Cas is where the story’s been headed all along. He’s positively swimming in fish metaphors. (sorry, I couldn’t resist) Does that abundance of fish, fishing imagery, and water imagery that have surrounded Cas for years lend itself to a literal interpretation? I mean, it’s definitely AN interpretation that is there if you want to see it, and if in your heart of hearts you believe it’s legitimately what the storytelling is attempting to convey here. But does that make it a valid interpretation that deserves serious consideration? Does it truly make sense when taking the larger story around Cas as a whole? Or is it obviously a literary theme that we’re supposed to consider through the themes traditionally associated with fish and fishing as used in countless other fictional works of the past? I suppose that sort of interpretation has been left open for us to take or leave as we see fit. It invites us to examine those references more closely, to help us understand Cas as a character and the journey his personal character arc is taking him through. It gives his experiences and growth a depth of context that is there to explore if we so choose.
(for more on Cas vs Fish, please see my tags regarding “The Fisher King.” I like to think there’s a more well-reasoned and logical line of thinking for pinning so much fish to Cas than my cracky example of fish!Cas would suggest.)
Now, looking at destiel specifically, if you take any single moment out of context, it’s absolutely possible to make an interpretation that their relationship is clearly more “brotherly,” or clearly more “familial,” or clearly one of “very close friends.” But it requires the same removal from the larger context to explain away what taken with the entirety of their history begins to look entirely undeniable.
I suppose, since Supernatural is an open canon and the story hasn’t been fully told yet, that it’s possible the writers could change course with the storytelling. It’s possible that something might prevent them from taking Dean and Cas and their story to the conclusion they’ve been building to for the last ten years. They could decide to leave this particular “interpretation” open-ended and unresolved.
Since that is always a possibility, and because I’m not psychic, nor do I have any top secret inside information from the writers and showrunners, I can’t say that my particular interpretation is more valid or correct or likely than anyone else’s. But I have yet to come up against a credible, coherent explanation for the entire body of extant canon that invalidates my particular interpretation, either.
The vast majority of arguments against boil down to logical fallacies-- cherry-picking scenes out of context as “proof,” straw man arguments, and ad hominem attacks. Because of this, I’m content to wait for canon to play out. I’ll happily watch the rest of the story unfold, and happily continue to interpret what I’m witnessing as a whole instead of attempting to dissect it out and explain away what I see as an entirely logical progression of storytelling.
As an aside here, I find it entirely fascinating that one of the most common complaints I read from people who deny Dean and Cas are in love is that the writing has become progressively more terrible, that the story of Supernatural as a whole makes less and less sense, and that the characters are behaving in increasingly “out of character” ways. And as someone in possession of rational capabilities, I wonder if their disconnect from the storytelling is simply their refusal to see and accept that perhaps their “interpretation” of the story is just... not correct.
When we attempt to deny or rationalize away certain interpretations of characterization, or certain progressions of events and how they relate to one another, the larger narrative just falls apart, you know? Of course it doesn’t make sense if you exclude large portions of it because you don’t want to see it or believe it’s happening, or important to the story.
Meanwhile, I’m over here loving every minute of it (okay... most minutes of it). So even if my interpretation isn’t absolutely 100% “correct” (and really, with any media, there’s always different ways to interpret everything, from what the color of the curtains might imply to who’s gonna get to fire Chekhov’s Gun in the third act), I’m content to continue to interpret it in a way that not only makes me personally happiest, but in a way that makes the story itself seem both logical and entertaining, as well.
Okay, that’s the end of the rational portion of this essay. Now on to the angry queer lady portion:
There’s more canon evidence for Dean and Cas being in love, or at the very least caring for one another to ridiculous, rather mind-numbing degrees, than there is for practically every canon heterosexual couple on television in the last fifty years. Think of any slow burn, will they-won’t they hetero couple, and do the point-by-point checklist of all the tropes they burned through before they got to the love declarations and the kissing and the happily ever afters (or worse, the dramatic breaking up and getting back together, or even worse, the tragically breaking up forever). I challenge anyone to name one hetero-presenting couple who required as many love tropes for audiences to recognize and acknowledge they were in love. Yeah, I’m thinking of that whole “they shared a pencil” post.
So yeah, there is likely a measure of heteronormativity to it, and a lot of the arguments against also devolve into rather gross denouncements that there’s no way Dean’s not straight, because he said so that one time... Mr. “I lie professionally” who also never actually said he was straight... gah... I’m not gonna dig up every ancient meta post on the subject. If anyone is legitimately interested in understanding why making those same tired arguments just doesn’t have any legitimacy in a reasoned discussion, they can damn well do their own digging. It’s not like any of the evidence is difficult to uncover, and it’s not my job to spoon feed it to every naysayer myself.
I feel like I’m standing on a Mt. Everest size pile of rational, reasonable, well-argued analysis supporting the claim that Dean and Cas are in love. *stands back and points at my whole entire blog again* If anyone would like to come back at me with something even remotely worth my time and attention to persuade me to alter my interpretation, I suggest they get busy. I’ll just be up here on top of my mountain enjoying the clean, destiel-scented air up here.
And finally, who says it’s not canon? Ah, right. Moving goalposts. At this point, I think it’s ridiculous to suggest that Dean and Cas don’t love one another. And profoundly, at that. I mean, you don’t give up an army for one guy if you don’t at least like him a lil bit. You don’t shout down God begging him to bring back that dude you’re kinda buddies with, or sink into a suicidal funk that reverses completely within minutes of finding out said buddy’s alive again. You don’t offer to march to your death with your chum because he’s such a nice guy and all. I mean... honestly. How far in denial does someone have to be to suggest they don’t love each other? At this point, when comparing Sam and Dean’s reactions far into s13 to Cas’s death in 12.23, either you accept that Dean has much stronger and far different feelings about the loss of someone that Sam does love and considers a brother, or else you kinda have to assume that Sam’s just kind of a dick for not being as broken up about Cas’s death as Dean is. So... which interpretation do you think is the one they’re trying to convey?
Bleh, whatever. I await the inevitable inbox full of nastiness that I will cheerfully delete while judging every anon who sends it as someone who really should find a better hobby than antagonizing strangers on the internet over a work of fiction.
Anon, basically, don’t let the bastards grind you down, okay?
Now for some reason I feel like listening to Achtung Baby. Imma go do that and feel the love.

Note
i love jack a lot but i don't get everyone's excitement about dean eventually adopting him. like why would you want to force him into another parental role with a kid with unstable powers JUST when he's escaping his role with sam? i'm not accusing you or anything i'm just really really frustrated at fandom's mentality
Yeah, there’s some good posts around discussing the various metaphorical and direct representations of the bad family dynamics going on here. I think it’s possible to enjoy and dislike the same thing from different angles. I LOVE Jack choosing Cas as his father and setting his personal compass by Cas. It’s perfect. But for Cas’s sake I’m genuinely skeeved out by it because of the way Jack(’s powers) latched onto him from the womb and that it is basically what I figured all along - that Jack himself is an innocent sweetie pie because he has a soul and he is therefore gifted free will and a blank slate to be what he wants and is at the very least not inherently evil…
But his powers still did something because of his increased awareness and powers in the womb that I don’t like, which is… convincing… Cas to be his guardian. Cas being forced into the dynamic is one of the metaphorical parallels to the brothers’ issues which I’ve enjoyed the meta about, because of course Cas can still love Jack and all and have meant it because I don’t think he wasn’t acting from the heart in 12x23 because have you met Cas, that was a classic example of his heart on display. And I’m actually hoping they do have a sweet dynamic when Cas gets back. But I still don’t like HOW it happened, in the exact same way I really dig sweet moments between Sam and Dean which don’t have the complicated baggage, but I can still be uncomfortable about romanticising other parts of their relationship, and critical of how Dean was forced to parent Sam…
So yeah. Anyway, I think the thing with Dean and Jack is that it’s the goal - Sam already likes Jack and wants to give him a chance. Cas has his connection to him already and it’s unlikely he’ll hate Jack on his return :P Dean is not wrong to be upset and critical based on the information he has like @k-vichan‘s post I just recently reblogged was explaining (Sam hasn’t even told him on camera that Jack said that Cas is his father which means until we get past the point of disbelief that he hasn’t said it off-camera that’s still something we might find out later from Dean’s POV to affect how he feels about him. Although I’m usually careful not to get over-attached to what hasn’t been said on camera in case the writers start assuming it’s obvious they shared it and leave an emotional gap… But this is such a big thing it might HAVE to be said on screen or else be a gap.)
Like… Obviously the emotional hook for “coming to like Jack” is something that falls on Dean to have while the others are already seeming to be clear on it. He’s the obstacle - the thing standing between Jack and a happy families thing (so it might be a long haul or Dean is just starting to warm up when things go bad either with Cas’s return or something that happens with Jack for what will be a frankly bizarre season if they don’t tease him ~going dark~ to test him at some point). It’s like a will they won’t they on Dean liking Jack :P
And I think that in this case it’s not forcing anything on Dean when he comes to NATURALLY adopt random youngins and other hapless friends (like Garth, tbh :P) but that he has to want to do it and it is something he does instinctively because he’s a nurturer and has a caring soul. Maybe because of the Sam stuff but it’s not weird when he does it to, like, Krissy or something. It’s one of his softer traits but in this case it has mytharc relevance, since Jack is, WE can tell, really sweet, but Dean is in no position to see him for what he is, which may compromise them looking after him, and even if Jack is sweet and squishy right now, he has cosmic powers and intentionally or not he’s going to be dangerous on a huge level even if it’s just for drawing attention. I think Dean coming to like him will play a big part in reconciling this whole situation just because he’s the one who instinctively doesn’t like Jack already. And that’s something where he’s messed up with grief and hasn’t seen anything to convince him Jack isn’t a problem, so it’s set up to be a bigger struggle for him.
And that probably also plays into Dean as the emotional centre of the show - that Sam is usually dealing with the plot stuff head on, while Dean is the filter we struggle with it through. I think Dean not trusting Jack is another way of drawing out uncertainty and tension about Jack in the narrative. Is Sam wrong to trust him? Is there still something hinky between Jack and Cas? Will Jack turn bad? Even if it’s seeming quite clear that Jack is not as bad as Dean thinks by far, and Sam’s made the right call here, to go with his confidence in leadership and standing up for himself arc, playing the reconciliation to Jack’s presence in their lives through Dean is giving us (or, well, the surface level read of the show, which I pay as much attention to as I can out of curiosity as a writer about stringing appearances and cheap drama out of more complex stories and I watch the episodes from the POV of “what is the show trying to tell us” before “what can I read into this”) a more drawn out exploration of who and what Jack is and the conclusion on what his character can be.
And I think that means Dean will be challenging Jack too, and always probably be more on the side of checking if he really is what he seems or second-guessing his actions etc. It will give Jack something to grow and fight against, especially since people HATE letting Dean down and Dean is the moral centre of the show when it comes to love, humanity, what is the right thing to do, the free will choice, just generally a beacon of these themes. If Jack has to win Dean’s approval, it’s going to be a complex and satisfying story and a good way of proving we can definitively trust him. Not because Sam makes bad choices or because Jack doesn’t already seem like a good guy, but just because Dean has Standards which are so high you can define and navigate the story by them. Like Cas rebelling in 4x22. Or on the flip side, 6x20.
This is all kinda wishy washy stuff for later in the season that what we already have, though, and I don’t know how thoroughly others have thought it through or if I am missing some really obvious lines of thought here myself, but I don’t think the instinctive reaction that people are wishing Dean adopts Jack is all just forcing a new child on him, or that people think Dean shouldn’t come to that choice himself, and approve of Jack for real reasons. One of the short posts out there about it that I like is a line of spec that Dean will start to like Jack after he does a Benny - does something to save or help Cas that Dean can’t deny Jack is good any more after seeing. That’s not just wishing another child to look after on Dean, that’s a complicated series of Dean recognising Jack’s potential to be good and understanding him better or now having a motivation to reach out to him.
And I do personally find it kind of creepy to be super gung ho about Jack as any of their children - Cas for the reasons I already said although I like it for Jack and would be open to Cas being cool with it :P But Sam and Dean as well because I think there’s a lot of point scoring going on with who gets to parent Jack like it’s a token or trophy for them, unlocking a whole bunch of parent headcanons and also, and I know it’s weird to say about a 1 day old baby, infantilising Jack. I think he’s already starting to get an idea of the more complex stuff and a lot of his literal born yesterday mannerisms will disappear as he gets older, since he has an adult intellect to deal with the world, so I’m very curious about his character growth.
I think it’s just a fandom thing to be eager for the main characters you care about to have fun relationships and the idea of just giving them a kid can be appealing to some people, but it kinda weirds me out. I saw a gifset of the father reveal to Sam captioned with “Sam realises he’s an uncle” and I like that a lot more because it emphasises his brother relationship to Cas, and puts Jack in that context to him. I think since Jack said Cas is his father, “parenting” just means “we are responsible for guiding this young soul” not “I will be his father” and Sam and Dean are basically his uncles, not surrogate fathers, and I’m pretty much just gonna treat it that way, personally, since it’s less skeevy to me. That’s a YMMV thing, though, so I’m not saying you can’t enjoy the dad TFW stuff, I just don’t wanna :P
(The Claire stuff was different since they didn’t have a whole bunch of responsibility over her and the episodes she was in never made it weird, and it was a side storyline… With this it’s all such high tension it sort of feels to me like I need to draw much stronger lines, especially since with all the fatherhood parallels some/all of TFW are going to be examined through being John at some point or another… There is a LOT more going on with Jack that makes it complicated and fraught :P)
So… uh… tl;dr… I have no idea if I’m even answering your original thought any more :P Idk about the wider fandom of crack posts and cracky art, but I think the meta folks I follow are not being too weird about it or will at least entertain all the posts being critical or introspective about these dynamics and I think some crack posts are just made in the spirit of fun, though it doesn’t help NOT give the impression everyone’s gaga for dad TFW and not being very considerate of the deep dark meta stuff and character angst going on… :P

Fandom Related Question I’m Going to Answer Although Nobody Asked Me Just Because I Want To
A: Your current OTP.
My all time OTP is by a landslide Zutara, but lately I’ve been on a Miraculous Ladybug kick and I’ve been especially passionate about the lovesquare (have you seen that dance seen? eek!). I know a lot of people prefer specific pairing within the square, but they’re all the same people so I don’t really care. I like all the interactions.
B: A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind.
Well the first one that comes to mind is Talisto (Talia and Mephisto) from LoliRock. It’s by far the most popular ship in the fandom and I certainly understand the appeal, but it wasn’t something that stood out to me. Personally my biggest ship in that fandom was Irisana (Iris and Auriana)
C: A pairing you wish you shipped, but just can't.
I can think of a few sitcoms where the main pairing was something I never really liked, such as Ross and Rachel on Friends or JD and Elliot on Scrubs.
D: What was the first thing you ever contributed to a fandom?
I wrote a Zutara fic and posted it on my Deviant Art long before I really knew what fandoms and shipping even were. Man was I naive.
E: Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what?
Have I added anything stupid to my fandom? Some of the stuff I’ve written is pretty stupid. And I sometimes make some really ridiculous headcannons. But nothing specific comes to mind.
F: What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? What fandom was it?
Probably the ATLA fandom. I didn’t get into HP until later on otherwise it’d probably be that. ATLA was sort of the first thing I became kinda obsessed about. I was livid about Zutara and Suki and Sokka are also so important to me. I was actually just reminded of how amazing Suki is on a post and it made me want to rewatch the series.
G: What was your first fandom?
Again, ATLA. My first fandom, which I am still a part of.
H: Do you prefer real-life TV shows or animated TV shows?
Normally real-life. Then I don’t feel like I have to hide it or make excuses for watching it. Because when I watch animated shows my brothers are always making fun of me for being a giant kid which doesn’t actually stop me from watching it, but I still prefer the option without the ridicule.
I: Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
I don’t think that’s ever happened to me. If I stop liking a fandom it’s normally because of me getting bored with it or upset about the writing.
J: Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr.
Supernatural. All the way. I don’t even really watch it. I’ve seen the first few seasons and a few random episodes but I haven’t watched the whole thing. Yet I have Destiel stuff on my dash all the time and I’m always reading Destiel fanfic that pops up.
K: How do you feel about the other people in your current fandom(s).
Well with my latest obsession, Miraculous Ladybug, I feel like there’s a lot of homophobia and a lot of unnecessary idealization of Chloe. I mean, Chloe is going to get a Miraculous and right now I hate that. I don’t think she deserves it and she would need to be written a Zuko-level redemption arc for me to be happy about it, but only a small number of people seem to care. It’s like they’re just excusing her behavior. I hate that.
L: Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for?
If I could have only one request I’d probably ask for something Zutara. Probably something to fix that horrible ending. Although, who knows, I might ask for something in my current obsession. I’d love to see some Broppy or Lovesquare work.
M: A person who got you into a fandom and what fandom they pulled you in to.
Actually, I didn’t get in to Miraculous Ladybug until after I got into LoliRock and one of the blogs I followed posted about how much of a great show it was. I respected and admired them enough for the LoliRock stuff that they posted, that I decided to check out Miraculous Ladybug. Now I’m obsessed.
N: Your favorite fandom (for the people; not the thing you fangirl over).
For the people? Probably HP fandom. It’s like the mothership of fandoms. Everybody knows HP and talks about HP. There are a few bad bugs but mostly everybody is just so awesome. They all just realize how special HP is to our generation.
O: Choose a song at random, what ship does it remind you of?
The only song I can think of under such pressure is Chore by Mark Forster and that’s because I just saw an amazing fan made animation for Broppy that had that song and it literally made me cry. It was beautiful.
P: Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
Au for Miraculous Ladybug: Uhm Girl Genius Au. Instead of having Miraculous, Marinette and Adrien have sparks and have to face off against another spark, the evil father of Adren who is most definitely not like Gil’s father.
Q: A ship you’ve abandoned and why.
Uhm let’s see. I shipped Eretria and Amberle in the first season of Shannara Chronicles. But seeing as how Amberle is now a tree I guess when I finally see season two that ship will be out the window.
R: A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships.
Uhm, I’m pretty passionate about Luna and Ginny in the HP fandom but I don’t really ever see anybody else ever shipping them. Which sucks.
S: What's a headcanon you have?
Well I have a lot of headcanons but since I’m assuming this question is about my current fandom, which is Miraculous Ladybug, I’d say that I headcanon Rose and Juleka as precious lesbians.
T: What are your favorite male/male ships or female/female ships?
I have plenty of gay/les ships but some of my favorites: Wolfstar, Supercorp, Destiel, Johnlock.
U: What are your favorite male/female ships?
Some all time favorite ships: Zutara, DoctorSong, Zenmasters, .
    * V: Do you have any 3-way ships? If so, what?
I am not opposed to the 3-way ship of the three main girls in LoliRock but otherwise I can’t really think of any others.
W: 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms.
from my five most recent obsessions
Harry Potter fandom: Luna is definitely my favorite character. I adore her.
ATLA fandom: Suki by far. I sometimes go through the series and just watch the episodes with her in it.
Miraculous Ladybug fandom: Alya. That scene where she flawlessly dances Adrien and Marinette closer to together and then goes back to her boyfriend who has an adorable little smirk. I just can’t handle it.
Trolls fandom: Aside from Branch who is sarcasm king, my favorite background character is Guy Diamond. He would make for an amazing best friend.
Brooklyn 99 fandom: Holt is my favorite character. When he pretends to be straight or when he acts especially gay are the best parts.
X: 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms.
From 3 random fandoms
OUAT fandom: Captainswan although I haven’t really been into OUAT lately.
MCU fandom: ScienceBros!
SW fandom: Stormpilot for TFA and Rebelcaptain for Rogue One
Y: A fandom you’re in but have no ships from.
Lord of the Rings. I support some of the ships (Frodo and Sam, Barduil, Gimli and Legolas) but mostly when I read/watch LOTR I don’t really ship anybody.
Z: What's a ship that you want to ship publicly, but everyone on tumblr hates it so you keep your mouth shut about it?
I don’t think I have any of those. Even when I ship unpopular pairings, I don’t really keep it to myself.
