Solas has such. Bad energy. When he asks questions it's like he's always looking (hoping) for his answer, not your answer. What a guy.

saying the only confirmed asexual character is the most likely to cheat on his wife is absolutely WILD. like Colin Bridgerton? THE Colin Bridgerton? Who just about couldn't have sex without an emotional connection to the other person? and when he WAS he was almost completely disassociating from the moment? That man would cheat on his wife Penelope, the woman he very obviously loves and has respected long before they were in a romantic relationship? The Colin Bridgerton who has the best track record for respecting the women around him regardless of whether they were providing something for him? The Colin Bridgerton who listens to women and wears his heart on his sleeve? Colin Bridgerton who's coping mechanism when he's dealing with heartbreak is literally abstinence? The Colin Bridgerton who chose to marry Penelope actively every step of the way and ends season 3 happy as can be smooching his wife? THAT Colin Bridgerton? Would take on a mistress? AHAHAHAHAHA
Whatever you're taking I want some of it, because that's a level of delusion I think would be very fun to experience.

idk shit about supernatural or gundam but it's so funny seeing all these tumblr misogynists get mad over their unseasoned chicken yaoi being outvoted by a yuri pairing. these man on about some "BBBBBUT NOBODY EVEN KNOWS WHO THEY ARE!!! THEY CAN'T BEAT DESTIEL!!!!!" like wow way to admit your knowledge of television consists exclusively of shows from the US and that you refuse to broaden your horizons enough to even ACKNOWLEDGE that shows from other countries are popular in circles that you're not in. get over yourselves. seriously.

Ryan did a bunch of interviews recently that I've been reading and I have some thoughts. You can find the interviews here and here.
There's a lot of terrible stuff in it but I don't have the time or inclination to bother with all that. I'm going to be focusing on two things he said in the interviews.
Starting with this from the House of the Dragon podcast which I've linked above.
Tumblr media
In it, Ryan talks about why he decided to contrast the lives of Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White with the lives of the privileged Targaryens. It was fascinating to get a peek into his head.
Ryan reads a rapist and thinks "this is a person worth deepening. We need an in-depth exploration of what goes on in this rapists head. We need the audience to sympathise with them."
Which wouldn't be so bad on its face, there's always room to analyse a fictional rapist. The problem is that he then reads about a little Black girl who raised herself on a tiny island rising up to become a dragon rider on her own merit. A little girl whose Valyrian heritage is constantly debated and discounted. He reads that and decides that there's nothing worth exploring there. Her story isn't unique. She isn't unique. In fact, she's so common that while we adapt and humanise not one but two rapists, we're going to erase one Black girl and turn the other into everyone's punching bag.
Then I read his puff piece from Big Think.
Tumblr media
This is a fascinating glimpse into his thought process. I read this and Ryan Condal's baffling decisions began to make a little more sense.
By his own admission, Ryan's ideal show is one where Black women are erased, flattened and ignored. He claims to write powerful women but we've not seen hide or hair of these women. In Ryan's show, nothing is ever deliberate and the women are largely passive participants in their own lives.
In Ryan's ideal show there's no room for a little black girl to claim a dragon with nothing but faith and her wits. In Ryan's ideal show we need all of the rapist men but the Black women are interchangeable AND replaceable.
In Ryan's ideal world, it is too much to ask that a Black girl be adored, have songs written about her and knights joust for her favour. In Ryan's ideal show, Black people aren't fully developed characters, they're props that he forgets about for episodes on end.
And that is why the show will continue to drop in ratings. When I saw the Nielsen numbers for the premiere, I laughed until I cried. The biggest streaming day ever for Max and they couldn't beat The Boys or Your Honour. The most recent numbers are even funnier.
But don't worry gang, House of the Dragon is doing great. It's now number three. It finally beat a four year old show! Everything is fine.

My fave type of kpop fan are the ones who think every single male idol is gay. But also they're all in monogamous relationships despite being like average early 20s and apparently surrounded by 1000 other hot gay guys. And this person also, somehow, simultaneously is very weird and hateful to any kpop girl or even female interviewer who talks to their favourite supposedly gay boy... despite them being Very certain he is gay.

lesbians who are terfs will never make any sense to me crying about the supposed exclusivity of the “female experience” like my brother in christ she experienced an othered, lonely, confusing childhood where she was made to feel inadequate in her gender, sexuality, or both just the same as you and instead of letting this unify you against patriarchy you just enforce it on other people to maintain the sliver of “power” you think you have. how do u not see how dumb this is oh my god

The useless slob husband has gotten out of fashion lately and I LOVE that for men as a whole. The Ludo guy in High Potential is such a good dad/ex, and Derek in shrinking is such a good partner and friend, and Ricken Severance is always 100% into his baby, Jay in Ghosts goes above and beyond to go with Sam's and the ghosts' shenanigans, and Jonah superstore was the dad that stepped up often, that one husband in pivoting loved his career mom wife so much... shows are giving their women such cool dudes! I find myself actively rooting for these straight guys to be on screen. That shit was NOT easy to come in the 2010s, it was either useless slob or possessive sexyman.

Every woman should have a friend like Grace at their party.
Tumblr media
Do Chris and his mommy and daddy really think that any woman he manages to date won't eventually find out about how he treated his ex and then his mistress?
Tumblr media
I hope she invites Grace to every party she holds in the future. And that she dumps Natasha.

The Hunger Games succeeds (and more so achieves sort of mythic effect) because it approaches dystopia through the timeless-- it (and Ballad) brings these universal ideas to a very personal lens and asks questions like "how do we begin to excuse evil in our lives" or "how do you hold on to goodness in the midst of oppression". And because it is so invested in the transcendent it lends itself to very powerful symbols, which give it that mythic feel.
Orwell's books (Animal Farm and 1984) both succeed through a very different approach to dystopia (Animal Farm isn't really a dystopia in the traditional sense but it has a lot of the elements). Orwell succeeds through real perceptive insight into the inner mechanisms of the subjects of his critiques. Orwell has vision that can cut deep into the way that things like propaganda or 'controlling the narrative' work and then, having dissected them, hold those tactics up for all to see.
And I think a lot of dystopias fall short because they get tangled up in the Idea of their story. The "what if" they've created. Either focused too much on the Issue-- too narrowly to be universal, too broadly to be revealing-- or too disconnected from anything genuine. And because they get stuck at that particular point they don't have much more to offer than "wouldn't this be bad?" And if you get a pretty good writer they can make that feel insightful but really it doesn't have much more to offer than whatever absurd YA book comes to mind first when you hear "bad dystopian novel".

Alastor would love to have a computer because while he still thinky vinyl is the superior medium for music he can't deny that it's more effective to have a digital music library.
He could also built a computer easily, the hardware is no problem for him.
Unfortunately he stopped keeping up with programming in the 60ies, there was just so much going on. And now he can't get any software that is not in some way connected to Vox he doesn't want to admit it, because he's the radio demon, this frivolous digital technology is beneath him, but there is a little part of him that is pissed about it.
Definitely pissed.
And in no way whatsoever melancholic, reminiscing of a past when he and Vox would build them together, Alastor working on the hardware and Vox doing the software.
A past where such actions were meant to be a pleasant hobby, a nice way to pass the time and not a commitment to an unreliable lifestyle that chained itself to whatever new trend arose.
No, he could never miss this old flight of fancy. But he can admit, that he misses the old Vox. His old chum used to be a nice company rather than a persistent annoyance.
