Paolini
When I was in high school, the fantasy world exploded. Everyone seemed to be writing it. That included Christopher Paolini, who finished writing the first book in his Inheritance series (comprised of Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance) when he was just a teenager. It tells the story of a youth named Eragon, who finds a unique-looking rock in the forest one day. He tries to sell it but no one wants it, so he decides to keep it for a while. And then it hatches, and suddenly Eragon is taking care of a baby dragon.
There’s a lot more to the story than that, but I'm not going to list out plot points for you. The truth is, there’s very little I could say about this series that critics haven’t already covered.
Though the series sold very well and won a bunch of awards, it’s received mainly negative reviews from critics. They claim that the story isn’t very original, that it’s too long, and that the ending is rushed.
I agree, but I also disagree.
Though Eragon takes major themes from popular shows and other books, I do think Paolini did an okay job presenting a new world for readers. I think it could have been a lot more predictable than it was.
I do agree that it’s way too long. It takes forever for things to happen, and then when they finally do, they are so drawn-out that they weren’t really worth waiting for.
It also bugs me that the main character is named Eragon, which is only one letter different from Dragon, and the story is about Eragon and his Dragon. I guess Aragon was too close to Aragorn, Bragon sounds too much like Dragon, and no one would have liked a main character named Cragon or Fragon.
I struggle with the characters, as well. For example, when Eragon loses his uncle in a horrible act of murder, naturally he wants revenge. And what do people say to that? “Oh, okay. Well be careful!” He’s never once taught to value life, even the lives of murderers, and that sort of goes against everything I believe in.
However, the main reason I disliked this series is because the world in which Eragon lives is a fantasy world, yet more than once, there are references to Nordic mythology and other elements from our world. That’s a rookie mistake.
I don’t think Paolini is a bad writer (although he’s announced that there will be a fifth Eragon book forthcoming, which is against my cardinal rule AND completely unnecessary, plus it’s been six years since the last one came out). I just think he could’ve come up with something better for his big debut.
These books are out.
They did make the first one into a movie, but it was so bad that I’m not even going to post a trailer for you.
