i mean, i dont think just because they smiled at each other it means that they Are In Love or smth, i think this scene just means like, attraction and nothing more, and I see this gifset more as like the moment the events that changed that were set in motion (not because that attraction in itself changed everything but just because well it starts somewhere) rather than a Point B they get to. and in magnus' case i think it's more complicated and i kind of dislike it when ppl use that "are you going to risk your life for a shadowhunter?" moment to do before/after thingies because this isn't like...... him being prejudiced and the fact that he ended up falling in love with alec doesn't mean Growth, he was right to be wary of shadowhunters and he still is. but i ignored that because the gifset is cute, tbh

but i'll bite anyway xD for alec i don't think that he like, genuinely believed that emotions were nothing but a distraction, i think this is the rethoric he adopted to avoid having to talk about/acknowledge his emotions to others, because he was in the closet and that was dangerous for him, and that phrasing worked because it resonates with shadowhunter logic. but he wasn't actually detached/off-tune/running from his emotions all that much, being in the closet aside. his whole motivation for everything has always been his love for his family, particularly izzy. im not gonna go too deep into the lightwood parents shit because the whole abusive dynamic is more complicated than that, but suffice to say that fearing his parents and wanting to impress them are emotions lmao. hating clary and being salty over her are emotions, even if he was right lmao but you can't deny that they are. so like. s1 alec was very much in touch with and to some extent ruled by his emotions, even if he was also logical, they were his fuel and his motivation and had always been. so i don't think we can take alec saying "emotions are nothing but a distraction" as a truth he lived by; i think it's something he tells others so he doesn't have to acknowledge what he feels to them, because if he does, he's going to have to lie to protect himself, and he's bad ar that, and he can't be allowed space to make mistakes or leave room for doubt

but he's never been as good at repressing his emotions as he liked to pretend. anyone can see how much he cared for izzy, or how much he hated clary, or how much he wanted respect from his parents from miles away. and with magnus, yeah, there was attraction (but i also dont like to take that as a determining factor because i dont really get that either and think its kinda cheap anyway, but also like, that's a canon fact that's happening there lol), and the fact that magnus' dumb joke was just plain endearing, plus no one else was there so he could allow himself to smile a little and enjoy the fact that 1- some cute guy was flirting with him; 2- he made a dumbass joke and it was funny. we can't forget that immediately after that he literally ran away so he could go into battle, so it's not like he immediately changed his mind completely or anything. i see that more as a moment of lapse where the real alec came through the cracks of the obvious lie that was "emotions are nothing but a distraction", and then he was back to repressing them, which is what that phrase means anyway. and i don't think he's like, in love there, not really. i just think it was a moment of lapse where he allowed his liking of being desired/flirted with and of a good dorky sense of humor to shine through. i hate love at first sight so call me biased but still, lmao

as for magnus i honestly don't think there's nothing but vague attraction in this scene, played up a lot so he can match the expectations of devil-may-care weird flirty lothario that shadowhunters have of him. also, that helps keep their distance, because shadowhunters get ew at the idea of being flirted with by a downworlder. i mean that backfired slightly because alec actually liked the attention and the fact that there was a world somewhere where ppl could display attraction for ppl of the same gender so uncaringly, but also didnt really backfire because the other shadowhunters were like "ew" (minus izzy i guess but still) and alec kept his distance from him because he couldn't afford to be seen engaging. you can see that that smile never pops up again, just very caricature-like frowns of confusion. im pretty sure alec is deliberately pretending not to get it in that scene, cuz while, yeah, what the fuck is magnus' over the top flirting didndidndi he also seems way too caricature, esp considering how he specifically makes those faces when jace is looking also the fact that his way of pretending not to get/be put off by something is by imitating an almost cartoonish facial expression to a T has very high autistic vibes but anyway I DIGRESS

my POINT is, i think magnus' flirting is more for his own sake than born out of some love at first sight shit, in 1×04 (that episode), which i think is supported by the fact that the way he flirted (privately as opposed to openly, emotional honesty instead of pickup lines, open communication about feelings instead of sexual innuendos) changed dramatically from 1×06 onwards. it's a completely different vibe. so, that tells me that 1×04 wasn't how magnus really flirted, not really

even that gifset supports this, really. there's a warmth in magnus' eyes, but it's mostly guarded. he barely smiles. he's holding himself with his spine straight, and he's still showing that over-the-top grace that tells us he's extremely aware of his body language and movements. magnus has learnt how to use his body, all of it, as a means to protect himself, and i think that's exactly what he's doing here. he is not being open and vulnerable, he is not trusting this shadowhunter at all. he's quickly collecting himself after almost being murdered, and having been seen showing a bit of his more dorky self, and yes, he thinks alec's hot, again that's canon lol but i think he's using that to collect himself and put his distance more than anything. so i actually don't even see "point B" as opposed to point A in magnus' case, i see that as a direct extension, really

what changed the way magnus saw alec was 1×06, aka the episode where they have to heal luke and alec lends magnus his force. i've gone feral over this before, so i'll try to be brief, but magnus had been in an intensely closed off moment and he was starved for affection, and when alec so openly took care of him, caring about his wellbeing and magic, supporting him, saying take what you need and just. openly showing that trust and availability, in a moment where magnus was kind of not expecting it and vulnerable, and, on the higher scheme of things, had been getting ready to open himself up for strangers again, he kind of. fell. and realized that, shit. he's missed this. and he's hopelessly drawn to it and wants to pursue it. i think that's the moment where a spark manages to get through the cracks in magnus' armor, not the moment when he first looks at alec. and magnus is drawn to at least try to pursue it, which leds to the drink scene, which cements that interest/attraction and allows some real feelings to be born. i also think that's kinda rushed (tho when is it not when it comes to sh lmao) and we could have had more time or at least more scenes to cement that before jumping straight to like, magnus pursuing him, but i do see where magnus' interest comes from, at least lol but while yeah it definitely deserved to be better explored at built, i also don't think it was just a "sudden attraction" thing. and i also don't think that magnus magically started trusting shs because he trusted this one shadowhunter, as i've already said, so i don't think magnus "abandoned" point A either
