Avacyn
Emeria
Call of the Void
Ghostly Warden // Ghostly Bindings
I had this idea for the longest time of a set (or likely, a couple of sets) in which Emrakul, as part of escaping innistrad's moon, pulls theros close to innistrad and the two planes start bleeding into each other. I never did do much with the set, cause I could never quite figure out what I wanted it to be. I knew I wanted to add a bit of an enchantment thing to the innistrad side of things to show the bleed through though, and these are a few cards that came out of that effort. Avacyn and Emeria are both the result of nyx bleeding through, and make for a fun mirrored pair. Curses just feel like a good, innistraddy way to add extra enchantments. And disturb returns since it already was an innistrad mechanic that kind of leaned into an enchantment thing (though this time, the spirits are gonna be enchantment creatures too).
Card transcriptions below
The first
Avacyn, the Golden Sun 7W Legendary Enchantment Creature- Angel [mythic] Flying, indestructible As long as your devotion to white is less than five, Avacyn isn’t a creature. At the beginning of your upkeep, return target creature or enchantment card from your graveyard to the battlefield. Put an indestructible counter on it. 8/8
The second
Emeria, the Silver Moon 7C Legendary Enchantment Creature- Angel [mythic] When you cast this spell, each player exiles their hand then draws that many cards. Flying, indestructible As long as you control fewer than five colorless nonland permanents, Emeria isn’t a creature. At the beginning of your upkeep, you may play a card exiled with Emeria without paying its mana cost. 8/8
The third
Call of the Void 1 Enchantment- Aura Curse [common] Enchant player 2, Sacrifice Call of the Void: Exile enchanted player’s graveyard. 7, Sacrifice Call of the Void: Exile target creature enchanted player controls.
The fourth
Ghostly Warden 2W Enchantment Creature- Spirit [uncommon] When Ghostly Warden enters the battlefield, exile target creature an opponent controls until Ghostly Warden leaves the battlefield. Disturb 2W (You may cast this card from your graveyard transformed for its disturb cost.) 2/3 Ghostly Bindings [W] Enchantment- Aura Enchant creature you control When Ghostly Bindings enters the battlefield, exile target creature an opponent controls until Ghostly Bindings leaves the battlefield. If Ghostly Bindings would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.
End transcription

Magic Set Editor, the program I use to make custom cards, has a frame option for the "nyx border" around enchantment creatures. However, you have to turn on that option manually for each card. Fortunately, enchantment creatures aren't super common, so it's not a big deal.
However, in the new Magic set Foundations, they're giving all enchantments the nxy border. This leaves me with 3 options. 1) Manually set every enchantment to nyx border. 2) Keep just setting enchantment creatures, or don't bother with nyx at all anymore. 3) Hope that the devs update the program to auto nyx all enchantment.
I chose option 4: Dig around in the program's files to see if I could do it myself. The program already has auto border treatments for things like vehicles and snow, so it's obviously possible. But how difficult will it be to modify the code?
Turns out that a whole lot of the code is plaintext files that can be modified with any text editor, and the code for auto-snow was easily copied and repurposed. I changed just 3 lines, and now all my enchantments are nyx-ified!

(p)Reconstructed: Fate and Fury and Fate and Fury
I feel like I’ve been a bit slack here recently, though in reality it’s probably fine. I purposely don’t really set a schedule, it’s an inspiration stikes and/or therapeutic type thing for me. Long story short: the usual work and family stuff, but my Magic time has been going to trying to better organise my collection, or organising Premodern events both in person and webcam. This post is going…

Twitter is uh...not having a good time. So I'm slowly uploading art from my Twitter and onto this here tumblr account of mine.
It is, indeed, another Dungeons & Dragon / Magic the Gathering character of mine: Eliana, a Hexblade Warlock I played in the Theros campaign setting (it was kind of a follow-up to our short-lived Ravnica campaign). We only had like...four sessions of Theros before the DM pulled the plug.
I'll redesign my bean and use her in my own D&D things since I don't see myself bringing her back to play with as a Player.

Hi Maro! As a Vorthos who loved Arabian Nights when I started in ‘95 but loathes planeswalkers-in-hats with Ghostbuster equipment, I’m trying to parse my own differing emotional response, and I think it comes down to AN being inspired by real world *mythology* while now we just get what feels like 80%+ on-the-nose pop culture tropes from the past century? Like, AN doesn’t have a “foul-talking parrot” nor a “mischievous monkey helper” nor other 1980s surface-level references; yes, it has Aladdin and Sindbad, but these are 800-year-old mythological characters (and I would argue those 5 or so literal names in the set are exceptions compared to most of AN’s evocative “worldbuilding”). I think most people loved Theros for the same reason, as it is inspired by myth and not just modern-day tropes and internet memes in a Mtg frame (well - plus ‘kraken’) so we are able to *escape* modernity rather than get suffocated by more of it. Arabian Nights would feel far worse if Will Smith’s mug was plastered on the face of Juzam Djinn. And e.g. I adore Goldbloom when I see him pop up on Portlandia or whatever, but seeing real world actors and modern tech in a “fantasy” game (big emphasis on “fantasy”) is just so completely immersion breaking. I’m curious if you have any thoughts on that “vibe divide” as someone who thinks about this stuff for a living?
I'm a big believer in resonance, and I personally don't feel the references have to have a certain date stamp on them to be okay to use.
Also, many modern references are actually tropes much older than that, but people assumes it comes from the source they know it from. For example, the Hulk is actually a tweak of the same trope used in Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde.

*still pick this even if your DM plays fast and loose with the setting lore as written; if your Eberron doesn’t look just like the Eberron Keith Baker wrote, that’s fine, as long as it’s not so far as to be an unrecognizable new setting, then I guess that would be the “other” category. I tend to discourage voting “other” vs voting for an option and then clarifying any nuances

The thing that frustrates me about the Great Wheel isn't that it's a cosmology based on the conflict between Good and Evil and Law and Chaos, it's that the way that cosmology is depicted feels... stiff, somehow.   Like, theoretically a setting where that's the case could raise a lot of interesting questions about how those forces would interact, what makes something or someone “Lawful Good” or “Lawful Evil”? What, in this setting, is the nature of Evil? Is Good the force that keeps the balance between Law and Chaos, making sure that authority can exist without becoming tyranny, that freedom can exist without devolving into anarchy, and Evil is constantly trying to upset that balance and create either a universe of harsh, merciless order where the strong oppress the weak and inalienable rights don’t exist, or a universe of pure lawlessness with no true safety or stability where not even the laws of physics are followed?   If entire species are inherently predisposed to one force or the other, how does that affect their psychology and culture? What does it mean that elves are “usually Chaotic”, and dwarves are “usually Lawful”? Is a Chaotic society one that greatly values individual rights and freedom of expression, or simply any nomadic society? Is a Lawful society one that greatly values tradition, conformity, and a fair legal system, or just any society that builds cities and has a degree of social stratification? What does a species being inherently Evil actually mean? If orcs are drawn towards Evil, why are they like that? Are they the result of a curse on some ancient civilization? Were they created when the blood of a monstrous war god fell from the heavens and mixed with clay? Were they created by some long-lost empire using forbidden alchemy to turn prisoners, slaves, or captured enemies into an army of merciless, easy to control soldiers, who turned against their masters and formed their own society, but their descendants still struggle with violent urges and the generational trauma such an atrocity would cause?   If a member of a species predisposed to one alignment follows another, what kind of person would they be? What would a Lawful Good orc be like, or a Chaotic Evil dwarf? Is human’s unique “thing” in this setting that they aren’t inherently tied to any alignment?    What, exactly, does it mean to be Neutral? Is there a difference between being Neutral between Law and Chaos, or being Neutral between Good and Evil (Is that even possible?)   That could be a fascinating setting, but the way the Great Wheel is presented in its default state doesn’t really tackle any of those questions. And that feels like a huge missed opportunity to me.
I have to say the validation of having a bunch of people ALSO admit their dislike for the great wheel is quite edifying. This has been one of my foremost gripes with d&d and to have a bunch of people write in saying "yeah I never liked this thanks for putting it into words" is just.....fuck I love you guys <3
