2020 Expo Dubai Entry Canopy: WonderCool
2020 Expo Dubai Entry Canopy Building, Architect, UAE Design Project Images
2020 Expo Dubai Entry Canopy Design
29 September 2021
Design: Woods Bagot UAE
Dubai Expo Entry Canopy : WonderCool
This is a beautiful installation among a host of amazing exhibits at one of the world’s best displays of the future of architecture and design.
Kaynemaile’s ‘WonderCool’ greets visitors at Dubai World Expo 2020
Canopy shields visitors from desert heat while providing calming sensory experience
NEW YORK SEPTEMBER, 2021. The first spectacle of architectural design to be encountered by the expected 25 million visitors to Dubai World Expo is the soaring kinetic shade canopy over the visitor arrivals hall.
The result of a collaborative design with Woods Bagot Architecture and Kaynemaile, the creators of architectural composite mesh systems, this 130,000 ft2 shade canopy acts as a passive heat management system for visitors waiting in 100-degree heat for security checks.
By day, the Kaynemaile canopy offers a cooling 70% shade protection for the visitors queuing to enter the World Expo, coupled with a calming sensory experience generated by the fluid movement of the 55 overhead screens running the length of the 60m long arrival hall.
This kinetic movement triggers not only air passage throughout the space, but also creates an interplay of shadow and light both on the ground and throughout the mesh layers overhead. Kaynemaile call this ‘the WonderCool Effect,’ bringing life and movement to static architectural spaces.
By night, an entirely different experience emerges as the canopy comes to life exhibiting dynamic light shows utilising the defusing and reflective qualities of the Kaynemaile mesh.
With 192 nations exhibiting in this once-in-five-year World Expo event, the leading architects, creatives, and constructors see this as “the Olympic Games of architecture and construction.”
“This is no ordinary shade canopy solution,” says Kaynemaile CEO and creative director Kayne Horsham. “As the ‘first impression’ installation at Dubai World Expo entrance, it needed to be visually dramatic and highly functional to reflect this international display of elite architectural creativity that is synonymous with this global exhibition.”
Kaynemaile was selected for this mammoth design, manufacturing, and installation task after 12 different traditional woven textiles and glass fibre materials failed in field testing for endurance in hot, dry, and windy conditions.
The New Zealand-based company has built and international reputation for its ‘can-do Kiwi’ approach to large-scale design challenges, coupled with an in-depth understanding of kinetic forces and how to maximize the unique flexural properties of its seamless material.
“The arc of our evolution over 15 years has been creating and patenting a manufacturing process through to delivering highly effective custom architectural solutions at scale throughout the world,” says Horsham.
Kaynemaile won ‘best new architectural product’ at the NYCxDesign Awards in 2019 and is installed on building exteriors as well as interiors in several U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Seattle, Detroit, Columbus, Atlanta, and New York. Internationally Kaynemaile has provided design solutions in Australia, China, Dubai, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and Vietnam.
Several U.S. installations are on car park building exteriors. A unique element of Kaynemaile is its solar reduction benefits to both the building it protects and indirectly the surrounding urban area (aka the Urban Heat Island). By protecting the building mass from direct sunlight and not restricting the cooling effects of air movement, Kaynemaile significantly reduces the total energy costs required to cool a building in hot climates.
The three-dimensional mesh structure means a high proportion of the mesh surface area is always in shade, giving a cooling effect as the air passes through the cross-sectional open area. It significantly reduces both radiant and thermal conductive heat from entering the building envelope by up to 70%. Unlike steel mesh products which act as conductive energy stores, Kaynemaile mesh remains at a near ambient temperature, thus protecting the building and surrounding environment from heat conduction.
In October 2019, only 12 months before the Covid-delayed Expo was scheduled to open, Kaynemaile was approached by Mace Group UAE, the technical consultants for the client Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). After validating their mesh as the only suitable material for this project, Kaynemaile then worked with Woods Bagot Architecture to co-develop and engineer a solution. After a four-month design process, the canopy was custom produced over three months in New Zealand at Kaynemaile’s precision manufacturing facility in the capital city Wellington in four high performance exterior colours to reflect the palette used throughout the space.
Kaynemaile mesh is crafted from lightweight engineering grade polycarbonate using their own patented injection moulding process. It is 100% recyclable and aligns with the circular economy approach to design and manufacturing. The inspiration for the innovative architectural product came from Kayne Horsham’s role as Weta Workshop Art Director for Creatures, Armor, and Weapons on the Academy Award-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy. Horsham was responsible for designing and prototyping all the armor systems used in making the films and became captivated by kinetic and visual effects of this ancient material.
For Dubai World Expo Kaynemaile have also conceptualised, designed, and created the living build façade of the New Zealand Pavilion located in the Sustainability District.
Unlike most of the 192 World Expo country pavilions which are destined for removal or redevelopment after the event closes, the DWTC arrival hall is considered a ‘legacy installation’ which means it will continue to create moments of wonder for many other events held at this massive convention centre and offer a cool space for those who pause and admire what is being called Kaynemaile’s ‘WonderCool’ canopy.

100 days of COVID-19: How a coronavirus changed the world
A transmission electron micrograph of a SARS-CoV-2 virus particle, also called novel coronavirus, the virus which causes COVID-19, remoted from a affected person. Picture Credit score: DailyKhaleej
Have a look at you. Go searching you. Have a look at the world. The whole lot has roughly come to a standstill. Solely important providers are functioning. We’re compelled to remain indoors. This isn’t the world we stay in. This isn’t how we had been. This isn’t how we need to be.
What occurred? Hundred days in the past, a microbe got here into our world. It sickened some of us. It replicated so quick that it raced into our lives from Wuhan in China in a matter of weeks. That’s the worth of residing in an interconnected world.
The worldwide village is a creation of our instances. Expertise is its enabler. It’s a reminder of the capabilities of people and their developments in science. Time and distance now not matter. Our lives are interlinked.
Marshall McLuhan was proper. The Canadian communications theorist was proper about the globalised group. “The medium is the message,” he had mentioned, about the applied sciences that join the world.
The coronaviruses that trigger extreme acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Center East respiratory syndrome (MERS) are genetically comparable. But we don’t have a treatment.
–
Science and expertise are driving our lives. We now have a digital world, too: a world the place lightning-fast communications put our lives on a freeway. We share information with ease. Buying and selling is spherical the clock, making the world a single market. That’s the energy of expertise.
The thirst for scientific information spurred us to discover the universe. Science gave us the expertise to make newer weapons of battle too. Drones and cruise missiles have changed navy methods and battlefields. Nuclear battle was a main risk.
The largest risk to people in trendy instances didn’t come using atomic weapons. It got here in the type of a germ: the new coronavirus. SARS-CoV2 spawned a pandemic, killing 1000’s. And it threatens to kill many extra.
A lot of the deaths have been in the developed world. International locations with wonderful healthcare amenities and extremely skilled medical professionals struggled to deal with the rising tide of infections. China, Italy, Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom: these are locations the place medical analysis thrives, bringing us newer therapies.
Some of these remedy strategies have been revolutionary. Most cancers and AIDS aren’t dying warrants anymore. Early detection helps treatment most cancers. Drugs has by no means been higher.
So why can’t we remove a virus: a microscopic organism that has sparked the greatest medical disaster in current historical past? It makes a mockery of our scientific developments.

Coronaviruses aren’t new to us. One of them provides people the widespread chilly. The coronaviruses that trigger extreme acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Center East respiratory syndrome (MERS) are genetically comparable. But we don’t have a treatment.
It’s troublesome to foretell a new illness or the arrival of a new pathogen. However the coronavirus has been studied throughout the time of SARS and MERS. There was a lot of analysis too. All of them had been discontinued when the threats pale.
Properly, that’s how Large Pharma works. Income matter the most. Analysis into therapies relies on profitability. If a drug or vaccine shouldn’t be more likely to fetch important revenues, why will personal pharmaceutical firms pour funds into analysis to develop it? These firms at all times prioritise vaccines and medicines that guarantee them earnings.
Persevering with the analysis even after the present pandemic ends will assist forestall future outbreaks, says Karla Satchell, professor of microbiology-immunology at Northwestern College’s Feinberg Faculty of Drugs in Chicago, Illinois.
Take into account the discontinued analysis into SARS and MERS. If that work had resulted in efficient medication, we’d have a remedy for COVID-19 at this time, Satchell says. The work on SARS-CoV-2 may very well be helpful in the occasion of future outbreaks, even when the pathogens inflicting them are barely completely different.
Pharmaceutical companies don’t see it that means. For them, there ought to be a return on investments. Personal firms fund a good majority of scientific trials as a result of they know they’re nearer to getting a drug into the market. A brand new drug in the market will increase their inventory.
International locations do fund analysis. It’s the taxpayers’ cash that helps develop remedies and medicines. However that’s not sufficient. Governments ought to be concerned in a a lot greater means. Extra money and higher amenities are required.
Have a look at our fashionable tradition. Who rakes in the large bucks? Actors, singers, footballers, fashions: celebrities all. Can they assist in a disaster like this? So we bought our priorities mistaken. Didn’t we?
How many of us know the way our scientists and researchers eke out a residing? Some are fortunate. Fortunate sufficient to be funded by large firms and foundations. However most of them spend their lifetime in college laboratories, closely depending on authorities grants to maintain their analysis alive. Their work must be sustained. Or else, we are going to see a repeat of COVID-19 pandemic.
Now we all know that a germ can convey the mighty world to its knees in 100 days. Let’s not give the microbes one other likelihood.

UAE takes motion to guard the economic system
Babu Das Augustine, Enterprise Editor
The UAE has been fast to provoke fiscal and financial insurance policies, extraordinary capital and liquidity help to the banking sector to climate the potential hostile affect of the coronavirus outbreak.
In February, Dubai introduced a Dh1.5 billion stimulus package deal, and that was adopted by a Dh100 billion package deal from the Central Financial institution of UAE to spice up liquidity in the banking system.
In current weeks the central financial institution has expanded its Focused Financial Help Scheme to Dh260 billion. That features Dh50 billion capital buffer aid, Dh50 billion zero-cost funding help to banks, Dh95 billion liquidity buffer aid, and Dh61 billion reduction-of-cash-reserves necessities.
For banks in the TESS programme, the central financial institution has prolonged the capital buffer aid (Dh50 billion in worth) until December subsequent 12 months. The banks and finance firms in the programme get zero-cost funding facility (Dh50 billion in worth) in opposition to collateral till December 31. Banks will even have the ability to use a third of their present regulatory liquidity buffers.
All elements of the programme are emergency measures are aimed toward serving to banks to supply aid to their particular person and enterprise prospects in phrases of rescheduling of mortgage repayments, waiver of charges and prices and in some instances restructuring of loans.
The regulatory aid measures resembling mortgage restructuring and deferrals will even assist banks to scale back the probabilities of a potential spike in non-performing loans (NPLs). This, in flip, will cut back the want for provisions in opposition to mortgage impairments and save banks from a sudden potential affect on profitability.
Financial coverage
The UAE and different GCC central banks generally monitor the US rates of interest as all besides Kuwait have their currencies pegged to the greenback. Though Kuwaiti dinar is pegged to a basket of currencies, the greenback dominates the foreign money basket with about 80 per cent weightage.
The UAE central financial institution in two tranches minimize lending charges final month following the Fed’s charge minimize lead. On March 4, the central financial institution of lowered rates of interest utilized to the issuance of its Certificates of Deposits (reverse repo) and repo charge (charge relevant to borrowing short-term liquidity from the central financial institution in opposition to Certificates of Deposits) additionally was decreased by 50 foundation factors. On March 16, the central financial institution trimmed its rate of interest on one-week certificates of deposit by 75 foundation factors.
Though the UAE doesn’t have a lot of financial coverage flexibility because of its foreign money’s peg to the greenback, the central financial institution was fast to chop charges to help the economic system in phrases of lowered funding prices for banks and companies.
Fiscal coverage measures
All the emirates have introduced help programmes in phrases of lowered authorities charges, fines, hire and lease reliefs to companies and people. Governments at each federal and particular person emirates-level have proven a dedication to help the economic system in these troublesome instances.
Proactive method retains UAE toll down
The UAE efforts to provoke steps swiftly to scale back the unfold of the coronavirus have helped maintain the casualties down. Whereas many developed nations like the US and the UK had been gradual to react to the virus, the UAE rolled out steps steadily with out spreading panic. Stimulus packages gave the economic system and the monetary system the a lot wanted help.
An early spring break to colleges was adopted by a number of different measures to encourage social distancing. Stimulus packages gave the economic system and the monetary system the a lot wanted help. Testing was ramped up and consciousness campaigns on hygiene had been launched.
The outcomes had been there to see. There are a number of instances daily, however the numbers are low. There was no large bounce. Which implies the UAE’s efforts to comprise the virus is working.
The medical fraternity in the nation deserves a large salute, so additionally the safety companies. The individuals in the nation — residents and residents — are in your debt.

Importance of thermal temperature camera beyond Covid
A thermal camera installed within the vicinity of a corporate building indicates that the business owners/leaders are aware of the body temperatures of the persons entering the building. This has been long since used for the purpose of security and check. Especially in corporate buildings where there's a small to large number of employees, a huge amount of data records stored, and high profile meetings etc taking place within that area range. In this case it is both a precautionary measure and an active security measure to make sure there’s a record check of every person going in and out of the premises.
Thermal imaging camera helps gauge the body temperature of every entrant, which is helpful for the company in many cases. Thermal temperature scanner was already famous among top companies as mentioned before for security reasons. And thermal screening being used for security reasons is not a new thing, covid might have paced up the sales for thermal screening equipment and helped increase awareness about the device and system, but it was not necessarily made an appearance after the pandemic. Although if you speak about the pros of the device and a system installed for it many companies have installed it to take a step towards taking preventive measures to contain the virus.
Companies are around to help you find the right device and camera/scanner for your business and buildings of importance but you have to choose a good enough option for yourself.
Alpha data
is one such company that is one of the top network and other types of security options company in the middle east. Dubai, Abu Dhabi etc are just some of the parts it covers in its UAE range to serve the market. It provides several options and a promise for a safer environment for your business and your employees, minimizing person to person contact and amnual operations to detect temperature.

15 ways air travel might be different in the future, from immunity passports to blood tests, Business Insider

Travel has essentially come to a standstill: The TSA reported 90% fewer passengers in the air than this time last year because of the coronavirus.
Airlines and airports are rethinking their health and safety regulations in order to get travelers flying again.
As is already the norm in many places, face coverings will likely become mandatory on flights.
Some experts predict the emergence of a social distance-friendly class, an in-flight janitor, and a document to prove immunity.
Visit Insider’s homepage for more stories.
While the coronavirus pandemic has all but devastated the travel industry, most experts agree that travel will rebound – it’s just a question of when.
It’s also a matter of how, as some experts predict a second, and even third wave of the coronavirus to hit, and don’t expect a return to relative normalcy until 2021.
Airlines are scrambling to get travelers flying again, and both airlines and airports are rethinking their safety and health regulations to earn passenger’s trust and avoid the virus’ spread.
A report by airline strategy firm SimpliFlying predicts a whopping 70 ways in which air travel might be different post-pandemic. “In total, over 70 different areas in the passenger journey are expected to either change or to be introduced from scratch to restore confidence in flying after COVID-19,” the report states.
Keep scrolling to see some of the most recent new procedures, as well as some potential future policies.
You might be required to take a blood test or nasal swab ahead of a flight, or upon arrival.

Emirates began administering COVID-19 blood tests to passengers departing from its hub in Dubai in April. The tests gave results within 10 minutes. While the test is not yet available for widespread use, Adel Al Redha, the airline’s chief operating officer, said in a statement that they are hoping to “scale up testing capabilities in the future.”
Hong Kong recently introduced mandatory COVID-19 testing for all arrivals, making it the first airport to do so, and Japan’s Tokyo Narita Airport requires testing for passengers arriving from high-risk countries such as Italy or the US, though results are said to take up to two days.
Temperature checks might become the norm.
Air Canada was the first North American airline to say it will introduce mandatory temperature checks ahead of flights. This comes as part of its new CleanCare+ program, which will go into effect on May 15, and will also include a required health questionnaire, and an amenity kit complete with hand sanitizer.
CEO Calin Rovinescu said in a statement: “We have been a leader in progressively introducing new measures in response to COVID-19, such as introducing personal protective equipment for our employees and being the first North American carrier to require face coverings for customers. We are now the first airline in the Americas to administer pre-flight temperature checks system-wide.”
Frontier Airlines followed suit, saying that it will require pre-boarding temperature checks for all passengers starting June 1, and London’s Heathrow Airport also said it will begin experimenting with widespread temperature checks.
Etihad is trialing kiosks in Abu Dhabi that will monitor passengers’ health, and in Puerto Rico, thermal-imaging cameras will sound an alarm should anyone with a temperature higher than 100.3 degrees pass through Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan.
In the US, there is debate as to whether the TSA should start making temperature checks on passengers and employees mandatory. Airlines for America, a trade group that represents American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest, spoke out in favor of these checks.
However, as Business Insider’s Aylin Woodward points out, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease says that between 25% and 50% of people who have contracted the virus are asymptomatic. That notwithstanding, even those who don’t show any symptoms can pass the illness on to others, so the effectiveness of temperature checks remains somewhat unclear.
You’ll probably have to cover your face throughout flights.
Since masks have become mandatory in public in many places, it comes as no surprise that most airlines are also making wearing them compulsory for passengers. In fact, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recommends mandatory face coverings for both passengers and crew.
Forget crowded lines — you could start getting texts telling you it’s time to board.

Heathrow’s chief executive John Holland-Kaye said that lines to board planes could be around half a mile long with social distancing measures in place and that airports don’t have enough space to implement this.
The New York Times reports that to combat crowded lines, “cellphone location data may cue your arrival to an airport, which can then check you in curbside and move you on to a security tunnel in which passengers continue moving – sci-fi style – as they are screened by TSA and health authorities.”
According to The Daily Mail, passengers may receive text messages when it’s their time to board, thereby eliminating the need to stand in line.
Flying could get more expensive.

While some experts predict lower fares as airlines try to entice flyers, a press release by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) anticipates fares rising by up to 54% in some places due to social-distancing measures with fewer seats available to sell. According to the IATA, social-distancing measures would reduce planes’ maximum load factors to 62%, when most airlines need their planes to be 77% full to break even.
Airplane design could fundamentally change.

Avio Interiors
Italian design firm Avio Interiors put forward renderings that posit a potential solution for keeping flights full while minimizing passengers’ exposure to each other. Its “Janus” design reverses the middle seat in each row of three, and includes transparent dividers that shield passengers from one another.
Instead of redesigning plane interiors entirely, Florian Barjot, an aeronautical engineer from France, created “PlanBay,” a removable shield that can be placed on middle seats that protect passengers both from behind and from neighboring seats.
A social distance-friendly class may emerge.

Emirates Airlines
Ross Dawson, author and futurist, previously told Insider that he believes that people will be “highly sensitized to the risk of a pandemic,” and foresees airlines having to step up their precautions, including possibly offering various degrees of distance between people. He even predicts the rise of a new kind of plane class that he somewhat jokingly refers to as an “isolation class,” which could be anything from seats with dividers between them to small rooms as we have seen in some airlines’ first-class cabins.
While short-lived, we’ve already seen the idea of paying extra for social distance when Frontier said it would begin charging $39 for a guaranteed empty seat next to your own. However, the initiative was dropped only days after being announced after drawing considerable criticism.
Full body disinfection booths could become commonplace, maybe even cleaning robots.

Hong Kong International Airport is already testing booths that are said to disinfect people from head to toe in 40 seconds thanks to an antimicrobial spray, as well as cleaning robots that use an ultraviolet light sterilizer as well as an air sterilizer to disinfect public spaces.
Bags may need to get sanitized separately.
caption
“Sanitagging” might become a thing.

Valerie Macon/Getty
SimpliFlying foresees luggage going through its own fogging or UV disinfection process prior to being loaded onto planes, which it dubs “sanitagging.”
Both terminals and plane cabins could become contactless.

Touchpoints will be reduced as much as possible.
source
Wolfgang Rattay/Ruters
In an effort to minimize touchpoints, SimpliFlying predicts that seat-back pockets, which they say have been found to be the second-most contaminated spots on planes, will be left empty, or could be removed entirely.
Touchscreen entertainment systems may be replaced with various ways to use your own devices to enjoy in-flight entertainment.
“To replace the in-flight entertainment system, airlines might just ensure that a USB and power-outlets are available at every seat and that some form of device holder or stand is available,” the report suggests.
At airport terminals, SimpliFlying sees a rise in touchless kiosks (similar to those being trialed by Etihad in Abu Dhabi) that can both check passengers in and test their health, or a fully biometric check-in and immigration process based on facial recognition, which is already widespread at terminals with international routes.
Hot meals may be a thing of the past.
caption
In-flight food and drinks have widely been cut to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Edward Wang/Reuters
Many airlines are currently either cutting food service entirely or switching to cold and pre-packaged meals. Instead of getting cups of water refilled, passengers will get their own bottle at the beginning of every flight to decrease touchpoints, according to SimpliFlying, which also suggests that passengers may begin buying their meals at touchless vending machines pre-flight.
In-flight janitors might become part of cabin crews.

SimpliFlying brings up the possibility of in-flight janitors whose job will entail regularly cleaning the lavatories and any other “high-touch” areas during flights.
Plexiglass shields might become ubiquitous.

Plexiglass shields between customer-facing airport employees and passengers have been recommended by the US Travel Association. These could become the norm everywhere, from check-in desks to shops and eateries.
You might need to show ID, as well as some sort of immunity document or health certificate.
caption
Some countries already have passports detailing vaccination records.
source
Juan Mabromata /Getty
Thailand is already requiring passengers flying in from certain countries to present health certificates that deem them COVID-19-free before they can board flights to the country, and the IATA has suggested something similar, proposing an “immunity passport.” SimpliFlying compares these to the Yellow Fever cards passengers must show ahead of traveling to certain regions.
You may have to get to the airport even earlier.
caption
People may be required to show up four hours prior to departure.
source
Reuters
As both bags and people may need to get sanitized, and health checks become the new normal, the process of checking in and boarding might start taking longer. “People may be required to show up four hours prior to departure depending on the specific airlines, airports, and procedures,” SimpliFlying predicts, adding that families with children and the elderly will likely be most inconvenienced, and that this may prompt business travelers to drive or take the train instead.

Air Travelers Can’t See All of It, but More Tech Is Moving Them Along
Airports, often hemmed in by neighborhoods, highways or water, already struggle to keep up with the rising number of air travelers. And the number is expected to keep going up — to more than seven billion globally by 2035, an airline trade association says, nearly doubling from 2016.So while airports are expanding their physical facilities where they can, governments and the travel industry are leaning more heavily on technology, especially artificial intelligence, to process more air travelers more quickly. The airports in Osaka, Japan, and Abu Dhabi have tested autonomous check-in kiosks that move themselves to help manage peaks of passenger flow.Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Miami International Airport are among those using visual sensors to monitor passenger line lengths and how quickly people are moving through security checkpoints. Managers can use the information to adjust where they need more workers and to send passengers to shorter lines. Passengers can see how long their wait will be on signs or on a phone app. The goal is to help reduce travelers’ worries about whether they are going to make their flight. For international flights, more airlines are installing what are known as self-boarding gates that use a photo station to take and compare a photo of the traveler with the picture in the person’s passport and other photos in Customs and Border Protection files. The gates, which are using facial recognition technology, replace agents who check boarding passes and identification cards.Seven percent of airlines have installed some self-boarding gates, and about a third of all airlines plan to use some type of this gate by the end of 2022, according to SITA, a technology company serving about 450 airports and airlines. Sherry Stein, head of technology strategy for SITA, said the goals are to reduce hassle for passengers, speed boarding and increase security.Still, there are privacy concerns over the use of the photos. The general public doesn’t receive much information about how the photos will be used or stored, said Oren Etzioni, the chief executive of the Allen Institute for AI in Seattle.“So even though we consciously give up our privacy, we still worry that these kinds of digital records can be used against us in unanticipated ways by the government, our employer, or criminals,” he said. A photo taken at the airport leaves another digital footprint that makes us more traceable, he added. The Department of Homeland Security said it did not retain photos of U.S. citizens once their identities were confirmed at airports.Technology similar to that used in self-boarding gates is being deployed for some foreign passengers arriving in the United States. Miami International Airport, for example, began using facial recognition screening at its facility for international passenger arrivals in 2018 and reported that it can screen as many as 10 passengers per minute using the technology. Travelers who have been to the United States previously step up to facial recognition stations, and a customs official checks their passports to make sure they are valid. First-time visitors still need to present a passport or visa and agree to have their fingerprints and photos taken. Some of the new technology is aimed at easing language difficulties. Kennedy International Airport in New York recently installed three A.I.-based real-time translation devices from Google at information stations around the airport. Travelers choose their language from a counter-mounted screen and ask their questions aloud to the device. The device repeats the question in English to the person at the station. That person responds in English, and the device translates that aloud to the travelers.Artificial intelligence is also being used behind the scenes to reduce the time airplanes spend at the gate between flights, which can mean shorter waiting time for passengers who have boarded and buckled up. London-Gatwick, Québec City and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airports are among about 30 around the world testing or installing a visual A.I. system made by the Swiss company Assaia. The system uses cameras pointed at a plane parked at the gate to track everything that happens after the aircraft lands: how long it takes for fuel and catering trucks to arrive, whether the cargo door is open, and even if employees on the ground are wearing their safety vests. While humans can do each of these tasks, monitoring and analyzing the operations of these various functions can speed the turnaround of the plane and prevent accidents, according to Assaia. After the same plane has, for instance, been filmed doing hundreds of turnarounds at a particular airport, the A.I. system can identify the elements or situations that most often cause delays, and managers can take corrective action. Accidents like ground crew injuries or service vehicle collisions can also be analyzed for their causes. The time an airplane spends waiting for a gate after landing or waiting in line to take off could also be reduced. A group at SITA focused on airport management systems is helping to design technology that can synthesize data from many sources, including changing aircraft arrival times, weather conditions at destination airports and logistical issues to improve runway schedules and gate assignments.Artificial intelligence software can also make a difference with rebooking algorithms, Mr. Etzioni said. When weather or mechanical issues disrupt travel, the airlines’ speed in recomputing, rerouting and rescheduling matters, he said. The data streams get even more complex when the whole airport is considered, Ms. Stein of SITA said. A number of airports are creating a “digital twin” of their operations — using central locations with banks of screens that show the systems, people and objects at the airport, including airplane locations and gate activity, line lengths at security checkpoints, and the heating, cooling and electrical systems — monitored by employees who can send help when needed. These digital systems can also be used to help with emergency planning. The same types of sensors that can be used to supply data to digital twins are also being used to reduce equipment breakdowns. Karen Panetta, the dean of graduate engineering at Tufts University and a fellow at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, said hand-held thermal imagers used before takeoff and after landing can alert maintenance crews if an area inside the airplane’s engine or electrical system is hotter than normal, a sign something may be amiss. The alert would help the crew schedule maintenance right away, rather than be forced to take the aircraft out of service at an unexpected time and inconvenience passengers. At the moment, people, rather than technology, evaluate most of the data collected, Dr. Panetta said. But eventually, with enough data accumulated and shared, more A.I. systems could be built and trained to analyze the data and recommend actions faster and more cost effectively, she said.Air travel isn’t the only segment of the transportation industry to begin using artificial intelligence and machine learning systems to reduce equipment failure. In the maritime industry, a Seattle company, ioCurrents, digitally monitors shipping vessel engines, generators, gauges, winches and a variety of other mechanical systems onboard. Their data is transmitted in real time to a cloud-based A.I. analytics platform, which flags potential mechanical issues for workers on the ship and on land.A.I. systems like these and others will continue to grow in importance as passenger volume increases, Ms. Stein said. “Airports can only scale so much, build so much and hire so many people.” Read the full article

Add Turbo Boost speeds up to 4.5GHz, and iMac Pro has the power and flexibility to balance multicore processing with single-thread performance. With new AVX-512 vector instructions and a new cache architecture, the processor handles even more data — even more quickly. Which means you can render images, edit up to 8K video, manipulate photos, create real-time audio effects or compile your next five-star app — all at lightning-fast speeds.
PARTICLE SIMULATION? ELEMENTARY. Billowing smoke. Torrential rain. A wheat field in the wind. With up to 18 cores and Hyper-Threading, iMac Pro lets you build and render particle systems of all kinds — static or animated, 2D or 3D — with ease.
8-, 10, 14 or 18-core Xeon processor Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz Up to 42MB cache Vega graphics. The beast behind the beauty. Featuring Radeon Pro Vega graphics, iMac Pro delivers the best workstation-class graphics of any Mac. The first Mac with Vega architecture features up to 16GB of High Bandwidth Memory, which helps deliver a major jump in performance — up to two times faster than any other iMac GPU and up to three times faster than the GPU in Mac Pro. This translates to higher frame rates for VR, real-time 3D rendering, more lifelike special effects and gameplay at maximum settings. It also supports both single- and half-precision computing, so operations that don’t require a full 32 bits of precision can be performed twice as fast. How fast? Up to 22 teraflops fast.
VIRTUAL REALITY GETS REAL. With the new Vega GPU, iMac Pro lets you do more than just immerse yourself in VR worlds. It lets you create them from scratch.
Strength in numbers. iMac Pro is optimised for performance across the board. Here’s how it compares to iMac and Mac Pro.
More memory for massive projects. With four channels of memory, iMac Pro can accommodate up to 128GB. So you can visualise, simulate and render huge 3D models. Create multiple test environments for cross-platform development. And keep numerous apps open at the same time. It’s all powerful. For all the things you want to do.
Up to 128GB 2666MHz DDR4 ECC High-performance storage. Load faster. Launch faster. Up to 4TB of all-flash storage lets you work on large 4K and HD projects regardless of codec. And with up to 3GB/s throughput, loading huge files and launching apps is faster than ever.
Up to 4TB SSD 3.3GB/s write performance 2.8GB/s read performance T2. Enhanced integration and security. Introducing the Apple T2 chip, our second-generation custom Mac silicon. By redesigning and integrating several controllers found in other Mac systems — like the system management controller, image signal processor, audio controller, and SSD controller — T2 delivers new capabilities to the Mac. For instance, the T2 image signal processor works with the FaceTime HD camera to enable enhanced tone mapping, improved exposure control, and face detection–based auto exposure and auto white balance. T2 also makes iMac Pro even more secure, thanks to a Secure Enclave coprocessor that provides the foundation for new encrypted storage and secure boot capabilities. The data on your SSD is encrypted using dedicated AES hardware with no effect on the SSD’s performance, while keeping the Intel Xeon processor free for your compute tasks. And secure boot ensures that the lowest levels of software aren’t tampered with and that only operating system software trusted by Apple loads at startup.
VIDEO PERFORMANCE ARTIST. iMac Pro has the bandwidth to effortlessly handle multiple streams of video. And with up to 4TB of all-flash storage, saving and loading enormous projects is all in a moment’s work.
Serious I/O. For serious work. As you’d expect from a pro machine, there are plenty of high-speed ports to create a high?performance workstation. Four Thunderbolt 3 ports let you connect two 5K monitors — for a total of 44 million pixels — and transfer data at a blazing-fast 40 Gbps. And there’s something you probably didn’t expect in an iMac: 10Gb Ethernet. So sharing files between desktops or working with high-performance network storage is up to 10 times faster.
SEE YOUR WORK ON THE BIG SCREENS. Create a powerful workstation by connecting two RAID systems and two 5K displays to the four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Then see your work on a 44 million pixel canvas.
40-Gbps Thunderbolt 3Four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Supports USB 3.1 and DisplayPort video output over USB-C. Up to 44 million pixels 5K display with the option to connect two additional 5K displays. 10Gb EthernetAlso supports NbaseT industry-standard 1Gb, 2.5Gb and 5Gb link speeds. RETINA 5K DISPLAY. DREAM IN A BILLION COLOURS. It almost goes without saying: if it’s an iMac, it will have a gorgeous display. And iMac Pro doesn’t disappoint. In fact, its 27-inch screen is our best ever, with 500 nits of brightness across its 14.7 million pixels. It’s as if the sleek, all-in-one design disappears behind the stunning screen — so you can focus on your content. Along with P3 colour and support for a billion colours, iMac Pro delivers spectacular, true-to-life images.
REVEAL YOUR TRUE COLOURS. A billion colours on your display means every photo appears just the way it was shot, with remarkably smooth gradients and vastly reduced banding.
500 nits 43% brighter 1 billion coloursSupports 10-bit spatial and temporal dithering. All-in-one design. More creative freedom. iMac Pro puts the power of a workstation behind a stunning Retina 5K display, in a sleek enclosure just 5 millimetres wide at its edge. With your whole system powered by a single cable, your workspace stays free of clutter. It’s a beautifully efficient design that lets you focus all your attention on what you’re creating — not what you’re creating with.
Advanced thermal management. Cool. Packing all that performance into such a slim all-in-one design required a new approach to cooling the system. We redesigned the thermal architecture of iMac Pro with innovative dual blowers, a high-capacity heat sink and extra venting. The result? Almost 75 per cent more airflow and an 80 per cent increase in system thermal capacity. Which lets iMac Pro handle 500 watts — 67 per cent more power than the 27-inch iMac.
All-new speakers. Make some noise. The enhanced stereo speakers in iMac Pro deliver broad frequency response, rich bass and more volume. So you’ll be able to hear that crashing cymbal, multilayered effect or sample-based sound, all with remarkable fidelity. And with four beamforming mics, your voice is heard loud and clear over any background noise.
Accessories with a dark side. Available exclusively at the time of your iMac Pro purchase, these new space grey accessories are wireless, rechargeable and beautiful to behold. The new Magic Keyboard includes a numeric keypad, and to go with it you can choose either the Magic Mouse 2 or the Magic Trackpad 2

Any object with a temperature above temperature emits a detectable amount of radiations. The higher an object’s temperature, the more radiations are is emitted. Taking advantage of the temperature differences between objects, thermal cameras make the invisible thermal radiation “visible” within the sort of heat zone images.
