James had always known he was in love with Lily. When he first saw her in the train, small, 11 year old James Potter knew. Knew that he was terribly, horrendously in love with her. Since then, he always has been. At first, just the sight of her smooth, silky hair was enough to flood his guts with butterflies. Then, when their elbows brushed against each other in Potions and James almost died right there. Or when they eventually grew close enough to cuddle together in the common room as they drowned themselves in stories of love and tragedy. James always knew that Lily Evans had a tight grip on the chunk of gold he called his heart. And he’d gladly let her pry it out from his chest.

Eventually, James had pulled himself together to inform her of his feelings. Of the deep and endless love he had for her, the love he believed would only grow deeper and deeper every day. Until he became a container for the ocean of love he had for her, until it was almost flooding out, almost drowning him. James always thought that he’d love Lily and only Lily.
