Marilyn Monore: Movie Ranking

I have always loved Marilyn Monroe. Over the years, I have gotten various themed gifts from Marilyn. One of them was a set of her films. I recently got into watching them and decided to rank them for fun! 

My Ranking: 

1) River of No Return: Classic opening, old school song accompanying a man chopping wood before riding away in amazing scenery. This is western, a different flavor for her, but oh man does she make me want to be able to be a woman of any time. Love the analogy of the whole movie, how love flows like the river (not unlike cups as relationships in Tarot), and I can buy the romance being played out. Based on my love of westerns from my childhood, I am ranking this #1. (1954)

2) Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: This is one of her more famous films, with so many iconic scenes. Funny, cute, musical-good looking guys and gals. Really there is not that much to hate on in this movie. This also shows her power in a group, a leading role but not the only leading role. I think this shows versatility in her acting ability. (1953)

3) Niagara: This was nothing like the description said it would be. One of the best hour and a halves of my life, and one of the best mysteries I have ever seen. Of course it takes place at one of the great and mysterious wonders of the world. Really good. Even when I was paying attention, I still did not see the twist coming. (1953)

4) How to Marry a Millionaire: Cute trio of girls just trying to get married, a big milestone in a gals life. I liked this for its cute ness, but in a sense of ranking-I liked Gentlemen Prefer Blondes more for the fact it had more elements going for it. Something I do love, is the opening and ending sequence making you feel like you are seeing a theatrical show. (1953)

5) Don’t Bother To Knock: Surprising movie. Really, no one wants to talk about how war affected a simpler society, when we lost so many young men-how did some women cope, if they did at all? Most people would not blame a family for tossing a problem they can’t solve around, but leave it to a stranger to teach a fellow stranger how to love and if you did not believe in Divine Orchestration before, this will make you a believer. (1952)

6) Seven Year Itch: It has cute credits, and opens up with an Indian bit but plays to a funny point that men have not changed, even in 1950′s (or even today for that sake). The husband, left alone for the summer, is so far very likable in trying to be different than other husbands who play hooky while their wives “go away for the summer”. He is the narrator, and its funny to hear the simplistic male view of things.  I appreciate the quick way you get the base story set up, and that Marilyn makes her appearance. Witty movie, feel good time. Few but iconic scenes. (1955)

7) Monkey Business: Now, I am not sure what I was expecting with such a title. I loved the scenes where the monkey was doing human things, and in the essence of “expect the unexpected” the humans were being hilariously youthful. I imagine this is Marilyn’s early years, where she was given a supporting role.  But this is a very good movie, and not like anything I had seen before. (1952)

8) Norma Jean and Marilyn: This is more like a documentary about the woman who recreated herself as an adult in Hollywood. It reads more like reenactment style documentary. Starting at the point where she is married to her first husband, when she got her first big break looking for work while husband #1 was deployed. (1996)

9) Bus Stop: Despite its title, it has the appearance of a western. I love that there are two in my bunch of movies. It is definitely range for Marilyn, as this feels like a completely different Marilyn from any other role she has played. The story is a bit strange and in some ways rushed, but it is ok I guess since it fits the title of the movie. It is not bad, but not highly ranked, in my opinion. (1956)

10) There’s no business like show business: I love all these musical like openings, but then again I could have everything I watch be a musical. It seems you follow a family of performers, starting from 1919. I know there is more to these movies than Marilyn, but for my bias that is why I am watching these movies. I kind of feel like it is taking a minute to see my gal, but I will keep an open mind. Nice, recognizable tunes. (1954)

Another movie I really like that is not included in the list, but worthy addition. It is: My Week With Marilyn (2011). Highly suggested watch. I am surprised by the last movie I watched, and realized if you watch it and My Week With Marilyn, then you can get an idea of her 36 year long life.
