OK
@zoeconstellation mentioned how no one shipped leoxpercy (lercy? peo?) and i said it was because they have like 2 canon interactions.
SO
this got me thinking that the two could actually be really good friends. which led to this (under the break):
- their relationship starts a bit strained because their first impressions of each other are not very ... good
- they obviously bitch about each other to their friends who can’t for the life of them understand why they hate each other
leo: i just feel like he’s not as good as everyone makes him out to be, you know? i mean, wow, he can control water. so what? i can control fire! tell me that’s not more badass.
hazel, who just spent 30 minutes listening to percy complain about how immature leo is: uh huh
- but they never say anything to each other’s face. it’s all very passive aggressive and it drives the other five and coach hedge CRAZY
percy: jason, can you pass the syrup please?
leo: the syrup is literally right in front of me--
percy, louder: jASON CAN YOU PASS THE SYRUP PLEASE--
- until one day annabeth has had enough of it and just locks them in a room together to talk it out with strict rules not to leave until they’re friends. or at the very least, not enemies.
- and annabeth is scary enough to make them agree
- so into the room they go
- it’s initially a bit awkward to suddenly be trapped in a room with someone you’ve just been talking shit about, so they sit in silence for a while before percy speaks first
percy: we weren’t ... that bad, right?
leo: ... nah. annabeth is probably just over reacting
percy: nice to see nothing’s changed. you should’ve seen her when she was 12
- and just like that, they agree on something.
- this leads to them talking more and percy realises that leo uses humour as a coping mechanism and has actually been through some shit while leo realises that percy is actually a really humble dude who tends to give the credit to other people, much to annabeth’s chagrin
leo: you ... killed a minotaur with your bare hands?
percy: yeah but only because my mom told me to use his horn
- that leads to them talking about their moms. another thing they bond over: their love for their moms. percy immediately invited leo over to see sally when the quest is over
- leo doeS NOT CRY HE JUST GETS A BIT OF HAYFEVER
- needless to say, when annabeth finally unlocks the door a couple hours later, leo and percy are on their way to becoming very close friends
- they start experimenting with their powers, trying to discover which is more powerful, water or fire
piper: leo, why are you wet
leo: i tried to set fire to the sea, but i fell in and percy had to rescue me
piper: you wHAT?
annabeth, who is absolutely done with everything: he tried to set fire to the sea but he fell in and percy had to rescue him
- they discover they share the same sense of humour that no one else on the team has. often percy will just whisper something under his breath which causes leo to have a laughing fit that none of the others understand
- I N S I D E  J O K E S
- they would 100% be the friend duo that have the most random inside jokes that no one else gets (jason is convinced there isn’t even a story behind half of them, they just say there is to piss him off)
piper, being a badass and fighting a monster with her cornucopia when a pineapple comes out:
leo, in the middle of trying to stop the ship from falling: PERCY, IT”S A PINEAPPLE
percy, on the other side of the ship fighting a monster while simultaneously preventing a storm from wrecking the ship: HAHAHAHAHHAHAH
jason, trying not to get killed and trying to not accidentally electrocute anything that isn’t a monster: what the fUCK
- then tartarus happens.
- percy keeps saying jokes under his breath before looking around and realising there is no one to laugh at them
- and leo keeps referencing random inside jokes before looking around and realising there is no one to understand them
- :(
- then ... calypso
- unlike in canon, leo doesn’t immediately hate percy. he understands that percy didn’t have a lot of time to make sure the gods were keeping good on his promise because he was busy having his memory wiped on the other side of america
- in the final battle, the two absolutely destroy any monsters in their path and when leo dies, percy takes it the hardest (he also hits leo the hardest when he returns)
- percy suffers from survivors guilt because of the line from the prophecy that says “from storm or fire the world must fall” and feels that if he tried a bit harder to kill gaia then leo wouldn’t be dead
- and they never tell annabeth that the reason they became friends was because they both thought she was over-reacting
