Months, this art project has been in the works for months. If I look back at the text logs, it was all the way back in May, this year, when I started trying to crack down on it. Part of why it took so long was because I felt so drained in a lot of different ways. But, hey better late than never, right?

Normally, I have more things to say in this section, but because this set was stretch out over months I don’t remember everything off the top of my head. So, I’ll just go with a few bullet points that come to mind: •I know I started out wanting to do something more abstract but that went out the window when I started drawing. What can I say, I prefer defined art. I did try there at the beginning, though, I promise. •Sam’s green because first of all he’s dreaming of the sewer he’s trapped in (and sewers to me mean green atmosphere) and it’s supposed to be otherworldly/strange because it’s a dream. I promise it had nothing to do with the Grinch or Kermit. Though that was a funny happenstance. •The heart was originally going to be red surrounded in flames, which was closer to what the text described, but then I saw a reference of a heart on fire that looked like it was lit up like the sun. Which I think still fits the dream’s description still. So, I switched tracks on that part because that was like bright sun heart. •Originally what the blue and orange flames description meant just a single flame with the blue color as a core and the orange flame at the tips. Think of the type of flame you’d see on the stove top. But I thought it meant separate orange and blue flames, and once I had that idea it was hard to accept in my head. Plus, a lot of references of things on fire didn’t incorporate that combination. So, that’s how I end up doing what I did. •The hardest part was probably trying to figure out the heart/fire, runner up or alternatively how to draw an open mouth Sam. Thank god for the many Jared/Sam pics easily accessible out there. •I’ve been listening to a lot of Doja Cat lately, the main song was the one I linked below but really it was the hour long vid version, several times. •I made the title card last because I completely forgot about it till the end. So, I quickly made it mostly within a day. My favorite part about the process for the title card was deciding the font with author. We tried out four, one was a joke font, but I said I was going to try them all out and I did.

Bonus:

These pieces just show a little bts of the art. I removed most of the fire and the blood and took away the black filter so you can see the foundation of the work that was built upon. RIIIIIIIIIGHT SO.

I just finished chapter 13 of Dog At The Door and holy hot cross buns batman if you're not reading this fic you NEED to. It's literally one of the best written fics I have ever read in my life and I've been reading fanfiction for over 15 years, lol.

I went back and reread the entire fic to lead up to chapter 13 and I decided to treat it like I used to treat things I had to read in college so I took notes as I went and please I am warning you this post is incredibly long. Almost 3k words. PLEASE do not hit that "read more" button unless you're good with having to scroll past it all and also spoilers ahead. Proceed with caution.

Rereading Dog at the Door reactions (spoilers, obviously):

· Doc finding Ren’s body to be cold and for a second thinking he’s actually dead—my heart

· “That’s Ren, alive and kicking.” Oh…no, Doc. No it’s not.

· The first “Where is my hand?” hits different the second time through

· Gah the ice and winter imagery ALL over the place—my English degree brain wants to watch and see if that shifts to warmth at any point as we go? Thoughts for future Red to think.

· It’s fascinating to me to see Doc constantly thrust into the prey role. This is a guy who is very much not that person normally, but something about the Red King is beyond anything he’s really encountered before—or at least not since Dinnerbone—and it pushes him into an entirely new role that he clearly chafes in

· “I should get back to work on your new arm soon,” he says, making a mental note to add claws to the fingertips. Honestly Doc why tho. XD

· “It feels like something Ren would want him to do.” </3

· Side note: I just watched Doc’s freaking hour long shulker farm vid, and that’s making it a lot easier to hear his voice in this fic

· I’m more curious about the hand.” New Ren laughs a bit at his own words, as though there’s something funny about that phrasing. I MISSED THIS LINE THE FIRST TIME THROUGH

· The fact that Doc just so quickly accepts that Ren is gone—maybe not permanently, but at least for now—is kind of heartbreaking. Because you know he hasn’t really accepted it, he’s just… deciding not to feel anything about it. Just nod and move on and pretend you don’t need to stop and cope with the possible/probable death of your best friend and the fact that Someone Else is wearing his skin. That’s so sad.

· “high-fiving the finished hand with his own metal hand.” Aww… Doccy.

· “He shoos away the images of New Ren holding him up by the throat supervillain-style and turns around.” Hmmmmmmm want that fanart. Scary New Ren/RK is good stuff. (post-chapter-13 Red popping in with a WHAT THE HECK)

· “that makes him seem like a ghost in Ren’s body.” YA KNOW. LIKE HE IS.

· Okay side note time: why is the Red King here? Ya know? Like – in 3rdLife the idea of a possessing spirit of bloodlust makes some sense. But why stick around? Was RK trying to escape the 3L server, or was this not deliberate? At what point did he take over from Ren—at Black Heart Altar? In which case, was the whole idea Ren’s to begin with, or was he influenced? Maybe it happened the first time Ren died? The Red King took over then—or at least started to? Thoughts, thoughts, thoughts, thoughts…

· Wait more theories—what if RK is connected to the ????? entity that spoke to Martyn when he died? In which case, cMartyn said he was considering making that canonically a Watcher (he ended up not doing it, but he also didn’t do anything that contradicted it either). I’m not saying RK is a Watcher… but boy he sure does stare a lot, don’t he.

· Holding the screwdriver like a dagger—mmmm

· Okay funny thought: all this frost, RK’s gonna need to be real careful about rust lol. And straining the metal, tbh, all that freezing and thawing is going to have an effect but the rust idea is making me laugh

· Until I realized it would look like blood and it’s not funny anymore

· “Renbob is in the beanbag stuffed next to the driver’s seat” right so is this where Renbob sleeps because I have been wondering—

· They both recover pretty quickly, though. Survivors, both of them.

· RK calls Renbob their “ferryman” and I’m not sure if I was supposed to get “crossing the river Styx” vibes from that But I Did. (does RK think he’s dead? That they’re all dead?) (post-chapter-13 Red here with a little bit of wordless screaming.) (and also a bit of pride that I picked up on this.)

· “And what a help you’ve been! Fixing me up, replacing my hand.” Hi yes, 911? there’s a dagger stabbed into my feels.

· “he’d rather remember rage than see another person’s heart break.” Dang that’s such a raw line. Oof.

· ”the Red King says, his voice hoarse with tears.” Really interesting that this blood deity can feel such emotions—like, anger or even fear, I can get. But to see this entity upset to the point of tears is fascinating.

· “There is a crown on Doc’s workbench.” Right, yeah so like—is RK unwillingly manifesting these artifacts? Because that’s wild, man. …how long before he manifests an “enchanter”?

· “I’ve never seen it [the crown] clean before.” Okay that definitely implies that maybe RK didn’t come around until after Black Heart Altar?

· “The Red King has the crown in his lap when Doc turns back around, claws gently tracing over the engravings, leaving frost patterns behind.” I really wish I had art skills because there’s this image in my head of a drawing of the crown held in RK’s hands, with his face (one eye glowing, one in shadow) reflected in the surface, and frost patterns following behind a claw that’s daintily tracing the surface. But I can’t draw so—

· RK asks for a change of clothes. What was he wearing when they rescued him, I wonder? The Red King outfit with the fur capelet? Or Ren’s Stargazer outfit? Which begs the question: where does Stargazer fit into all this? Was Ren’s return to Hermitcraft RK free, but when he came so close to dying to Sith, RK found that as a gateway to take over? (Post-13 Red here, Looking Intently at this note.)

· Awww… the image of a one-legged RK clutching new clothes to his chest and hopping down to change in the bathroom… That’s weirdly endearing. He’s less menacing when he stands up somehow. Less lurking, maybe.

· Oooohhhhh he messed up his back sleeping on the floor. Gotcha.

· Doc keeps telling himself (and RK) that saving him and working on these parts is “the right thing to do” and while he’s not WRONG I just want to see him realize that it’s not only the right thing, it’s realistically the only thing, because if he didn’t, then he’d have to deal with the fact that he’s lost his best friend and we can’t have that.

· “I don’t need to eat” ummmmmm no hold on this definitely implies that RK is possessing a dead body and I’m not okay with that where is Ren

· LOLOL “I can’t stand to see [you do] this” is such a raw line to be about watching Doc eat cereal with his hands

· “The voice doesn’t belong to who he thinks it does.” Ugh, Doc. This isn’t the first time he’s lost a close friend to Something Else, something otherworldly.

Also I’m looking forward to the moment when he says something and it’s not in italics because it’s REN and oh my lands please give this to me I beg you (post-13 Red here with a bit more mindless screaming)

· “watch your tongue with me, Atlas, because I’m the one person you can pass the sky to.” Okay okay okay—English studies brain coming out. This suggests that there is a burden RK and Doc can share: something Doc is currently struggling against that only RK can help him with. In the moment, I don’t know if this is really fair of RK to say—after all, Doc does technically have Renbob too, if we’re just talking about Doc’s unhealthy coping mechanisms. In fact, if that’s the context, then Renbob is a much better fellow-Atlas because he and Doc have known each other much longer and they’re both dealing with the loss of Ren. BUT, knowing about the upcoming conversation where Doc and RK both realize that they’ve lost someone (Ren for Doc, Martyn for RK) this line suddenly has a lot more weight. Again, I don’t think that in that moment RK quite has the right to pull this zinger. But in later context, it turns out to be true after all. They are the only two with this particular shared pain.

· Doc upset with himself because he can’t get over his “stupid hang-ups” DOC MY LAD. “I’ve lost my best friend, you’re in his body, and I don’t know how to process any of these emotions” is not a “stupid hang-up” PLEASE stop blaming yourself for everything!?

· “I’m so tired” in the middle of his nightmare—oh my gosh. That hurts so much for some reason.

· I also very much wish I had the ability to draw the image of Doc with tears on his face, staring dead-eyed down at his workbench while RK looms over from behind, pinning his wrists to the table with one metal arm and one frost-bitten one, a look of exasperation and concern on his face. Why can’t I draw the things

· “How do you know Etho” “I watched him die.” OW ow ow ow ow

· Doc takes this as calmly as only someone used to living in a world where death has low consequences can. Oh. Oh—that means… huh. Doc isn’t used to losing people permanently on any basis, especially not death. So no wonder he doesn’t know how to process Ren being gone (I can’t bear to write “dead” there). He literally doesn’t have context for it… and what context he DOES have is like—I mean, Etho and Bdubs came back. Ouch.

· “Twenty-five.” The Red King makes the number sound like a threat. Yet another banger line I missed the first time through. Imagine waking up and thinking you’re in 3rd Life again but instead of 14 players there’s almost twice that many and you think you don’t know any of them.

· I still don’t quite understand the “when was etho added/should have known there was something different” bit or why RK is so emotional about it… but I have trust that it’ll make sense at some point. (post-13 Red: ...is this something about the fact that he thinks he's dead...so he thinks Etho has died before? Like, that 3rd Life wasn't Etho's first hardcore? ...I feel like I'm almost grasping this but I'm missing an element somewhere.)

· And now a sword. RK. My man. You need to stop manifesting things—especially when they scare the ever-living daylights out of you.

· I absolutely adore the in-universe lore that Fire Aspect is a PvP enchantment because it threatens dropped loot, and yeah I very well might steal that. (Along with something I read at one point who-even-knows-where that Knockback is a coward’s enchantment, because I love that too.)

· He really shouldn’t. / Doc picks up the sword by the scabbard and hands it to him, hilt extended. Doc you already trust this guy so much and you don’t even know it—but is it just because you still subconsciously trust the face he wears? Or is it something deeper?

· Ugh, the “I was supposed to kill someone for him” conversation/scene is SO FREAKING GOOD

· “I don’t want it. Not like the crown.” Why, though? Why doesn’t he want it? Because it’s more to do with death than kingship? OH. Oh, I hadn’t even considered that. I’ve been thinking of RK as this like, god of blood and vengeance but maybe he’s not. Maybe he hates the bloodshed (“the blood! It’s drippin’ in me eyes… I’ve been blinded by the violence…”) just as much—more?—than Ren did/would have. Huh. That’s a new facet.

· Oh my heart the “have you ever lost someone and it was your fault” line. Dagger to the feels. Dagger to the feels.

· This like… “I’m on a roll and even though I know I should stop I really don’t want to” mode? Man. That’s relatable. Especially when you’re working to avoid dealing with something else.

· “Not making it for you—it’s for Ren” oh ouch ouch ouch the denial suddenly breaks through it’s okay, Doc I’m with you on this

· The second time reading through it’s far clearer that Doc has a blind panic attack here—when he starts rambling that Ren’s coming back, he’ll be there for season eight and RK goes to…do whatever he was going to do and Doc just blanks out. The manic productivity should have been a warning sign, the poor guy is crumbling.

· “Doctor” and “he’s not sure he deserves that title right now” UGH Doc needs a hug someone please hug him and tell him it’s all going to be okay. Someone please hug me and tell me it’s all going to be okay.

· “his hand on his throat” over the scar from the Red Winter axe? </3

· “I did do that. I have done that.” RK admitting to it actually having been him in Doc’s nightmares?

· Okay sorry the conversation about beating Dinnerbone will never not be funny to me

· RK mentions that people used to call him m’lord or Ren, and then mere minutes later you have “Ren. You couldn’t save him because of me, could you?” He knows exactly what’s going on here. Not maliciously, but he’s no dense-head, he’s put the pieces together. (post-13 Red: MOST of the pieces. Most of them.)

· Watching Doc slowly stop fighting his nightmares—like, the first time, he fights. The second time, he accepts it but still struggles. And this time… this time he gives up before it even starts. That hurts, man.

· Good grief the whole “get my head chopped off” / “you really don’t want that” bit. O.O I’m not sure what emotion I’m feeling but I’m Feeling An Emotion.

· “Snow’s new. Dream’s not.” </3

· …Doc’s not gonna be a fan of snowier-snow after this trip…

· "Dr. M77" Actually he’s Doc Monster, RK, but we’ll let it go. XD

· OKAY BUT THIS EXCHANGE? The “how are you feeling” / “better” / “you’re a bad liar” / “I said better not great” that’s such a good exchange and I don’t know why every other time I’ve ever seen it used they stop at the lying accusation? Doc with the snappy comebacks, man.

Jamil would have strong feelings about Mc. While their mental power is leagues above his, they can make his life much better: either by helping him protect Kalim (Mc can find any assassin around and make them leave) or just make the Scarabia dormleader quiet down (by calming his emotions). Seeing that Kalim also have the same dark desires, they both will plan of something to kidnap them.

Another one that will try to kidnap Mc will be Azul. Lord, the amount of contracts and info he would have if only Mc was by his side 😳

I think Rook would be obsessed too. Both because Mc can find the deepest secrets of people AND having an otherworldly diamond form is too BEAUTÉ for the hunter.

It is exhausting for MC to deal with not one but over 20 people. They need out but the mirror is the way of their home and they can’t just leave NRC because of it

They see Rook making diamond headed arrow to penetrate their skin in her diamond form. They see the hunt he plans. They see all the fantasies he has invoking them

Fighting individuals are easy and they can fend off a group but the constant defense is tiring and the tag teams are challenging. Not only they have magic but also most have monetary resources. Kalim and Jamil work together, using Kalim’s money to make MC’s life difficult. They can’t find in this many fronts, they will slip and when MC does, Kalim and Jamil will be there to secure them

i do think "i am hell's master" will be used in the show, but i could see it being said by big baddie vecna (since the super red-drenched otherworldly dimension max is in during the trailer looks a lot like pop culture depictions of hell, which ties into the idea of her grief & b*lly being there because he was so terrible).

on the other hand, it might have something to do with eddie. i could see him saying "i am hell's master" in a kind of smug way in response to accusations that he's leading a satanic cult. or maybe it's a dungeons and dragons campaign thing. who knows.

After recently announcing her debut album Flaw Flower is due June 25 via Illegal Data, London-based musician Harriet Zoe Pittard, aka Zoee, is sharing another slice of her multi-faceted art-pop sounds with her new single'Host'. Speaking about the track, Zoee said "‘Host’ describes the disconcertingly replicant-like nature of a once starry-eyed lover who becomes increasingly detached. The video is inspired by The Twilight Zone and was shot on location in a forest close to where I grew up in Berkshire."

Nashville-based songwriter Madi Diaz releases 'Nervous,' a new single about recognizing unhealthy coping mechanisms. The song’s frank lyrics are bellied by infectious guitar and Diaz’s buoyant voice: “I know why I lie to myself // I’m not really looking to get healthy // I have so many perspectives I’m losing perspective I make me nervous.” The accompanying video was shot in Nashville and directed by Jordan Bellamy. Buzzy duo XVOTO have announced that their eagerly-awaited debut EP will be arriving on June 4 on One Two Many. Sharing new single ‘Friends’ alongside the news, Jazz Alonso explains that the track is rooted in “the people who have irreversibly changed you and then having to pretend you’re unphased by them when you’re in the same room. Does there have to be a monster in the story/the artwork that is important for the plot/the piece of art? - Yes, definitely! The monster can be purely imaginary though, like in a dream, or maybe people only think there is a monster, but it turns out there is not. It must be a driving force of the plot/central element of the artwork, though.

Must the monster be evil and scary? - No, not necessarily. There are "good" monsters in the original Witcher books, like Dopplers or even a Higher Vampire. The monster could also just be a mischievous goblin that hides socks. Humour and fluff very welcome!

Must the monster die? - That is totally up to you. There are quite a few examples in the books where Geralt does not kill the monster, even cases where he befriends it.

Is sex with a monster allowed? - Sure, why not? Just tag it accordingly if it is nsfw or any warnings/triggers apply (like non-con etc.).

Beetlejuice Musical fantasy

So, I fell in love with Beetlejuice the musical, the musical, the musical ever since I saw the Tony performance the cast did. It was a random YouTube click that sent me on a whirlwind of inspiration and near obsessive fandom. I immediately became a fan of Alex Brightman and have since seen Red Hook, his episode of Good Fight and any YouTube vid, soundtrack and bootleg I could find! His energy, talent and love of his work really shines in anything he does.

But this post isn’t about Brightman. It’s about the Beetlejuice show itself. If you have not seen it yet, I suggest going to Broadway and getting tickets now if you can. If not, it is not difficult to find someone with a bootleg. It is a fantastic show made by many fantastic people, but I have a few ideas for it that are a bit…out there.

My imagination runs wild with things like this. ‘How can this be different? How can it be better, go further?’ and this show was no different. I have a character in my head. Fearless and strong, able to do what she wants because she always finds a way. She wanted to perform School of Rock, but is stuck in a second shift manufacturing job. So she was able to convince her boss that she could rock the floor, while still getting her work done. Realistic? No, but when are fantasies based in reality.

So what would she do for Beetlejuice? How do you take a show like that to another level to satisfy her adrenaline needs? There is an interview towards the beginning of the show’s run where Alex and Sophia Ann-Caruso are speaking about the work put into the show and Alex points out ‘It’s stunts!’ and this makes my fantasy self laugh.

‘I’ll show you stunts!’

The start of the show would begin as it does on the Great White Way, but as if Brightman had actually taken cocaine in the wings….and speed. My fantasy self would run and jump over and off anything she could at a whim! Physically fit enough for the stunts, and understanding her body to an extreme degree to avoid injury. What she can do really tests the limits of what a person can do.

She really kicks it into high gear for Say My Name. When I first saw the show my thought about the set was ‘that ‘roof’ is way to small…and so low to the ground!’ So the fantasy would perform the number on a high wire (The strange thing is? I thought of this BEFORE I saw Alex’s interview for Pizza Your Mind https://youtu.be/8jctcvwmykM in which he mentions a talent for wire walking!) The two actors would move and jump over one another high above the audience!

The show would have to keep that kind of energy up, though. So how do you top a high wire act?

I don’t know how Tesla coils work, so it is possible that the things I describe here are dangerous, perhaps even impossible, but, like I said, it’s a fantasy.

Beetlejuice has some impressive power that he uses in the show, depicted by flash paper, lighting, moving sets, and bangs on the Winter Garden stage. My idea would be to use lightning! Tesla coils backstage and a chain mail jacket would aid in this (‘Bitchin’ resistance training.’ Is what she’s say when someone comments on her performing in such a costume). Act 1 would end with bolts of lightning generated from the coils, striking the actor, and being directed to targets like the light fixture, walls, and the pig!

Now, this would obviously be rather painful for my fantasy self, so she would have a rather high pain tolerance and utilize the intermission to recover from the electricity coursing through her body.

Act 2 would be the real test. That Beautiful Sound would best be performed while the actor was wearing the chain mail jacket. Her strength and endurance would have to be increased in order for this to work. She’s dance the number out of the jacket, then on, to develop both to the level needed. Lightning would be used sporadically, and strike near the actors who become possessed for the ‘dance break’, also the ‘She’s in for a shock’ line! It would make for one hell of a show!

Beetlejuice could not be the only one with the stunts, though. My fantasy world is a little self-centered. I want to play BJ, so most of the dream is from that perspective, but there is one exception: Barbara 2.0. It never felt right that only a few things were broken during this number so I always wondered how cool it would be for their past projects to whirl around them as they find their power together, destroying the past as they faced their future!

The séance would need another one up, and Beetlejuice’s hair was and inspiration for another element used on stage. What if the ghoul rose from that stage lit on fire? This jacket would have some kind of fuel on it, maybe gas. Something providing as much control of the element as possible. Beetlejuice in his fury would throw flames on stage, directing his power to the chains and such as needed. The flames would dissipate when Lydia leaves and instead, BJ would opt for throwing knives hurled at various targets (this will continue later).

I am sure that some more effects can be used in the Netherworld, especially for Lydia’s search for her mother. I thought that doubles of the actress would run through, sometimes having mirror images of the girl running about, adding to the otherworldly look of this scene!

The Wheel of Death is where more knife work would be added. Otho would spin on the wheel while Beetlejuice would throw knives at his body, but they would miss! BJ would comment on why his aim is so shit as he pushes the wheel away, leaving room for Lydia to reappear.

Lydia takes control of the show from now on, so my fantasy reverts back to the default of the Broadway show. Sometimes Lydia is hovered in mid-air, with no possible way of doing it, but that’s about it.

I have so many ideas! So many outlines, half-coherent scribbles on random pieces of paper that I hope will one day be turned into full stories. Below, I will put my favorite half-baked ideas, hoping that this will spark an urge to write them. Also, if any of these strike your fancy please let me know! I may be more inclined to write it :)

James Bond

Untitled 004: Co-written with the amazing Opal. This story is keeping us on our toes, and we are just along for the ride. It keeps going in different directions than planned! But here’s what Opal wrote about it: “In which James Bond is grouchy and surly after QoS and in no mood to deal with his new partner, 004, who also goes by Q. 004, predictably, hates him right back.” I love working with Opal on this one, and am excited to see where it goes :)

Moon deity 00q: Based off this quote “If the moon were a person, they’d be one who knew a great many secrets. For how many nights have you paced your moonlit bedroom, whispering your regrets and your deepest, strangest fears for no one to hear but the night? “ James Bond is a lonely child on the moors of Scotland and just wants a friend. The moon hears his pleas. (Q/Ben is so otherworldly, I’m totally making him a moon deity).

Artist!Q: I have so much background for Q on this one. He is a free-spirited artist, traveling the world. James Bond is the world-weary agent that meets him. One life of color, one in shades of grey. Or: Bond and Q, two very different people, keep meeting in random countries. Strangers-friends-lovers, not necessarily in that order.

SugarDaddy!AU and LeverageXover: Alec Hardison and Q are uni friends, both skilled hackers, both struggling to make ends meet. Hardison has no qualms for hacking rich people to add to his own meager savings, but Q wants to earn his own money and make his own way in the world. He meets Bond, a 00 who is paid lavishly for the constant threats to his life, who is determined to wine and dine this lovely young man and give him a opulent life that he can enjoy.

Doctor Who

Like Real People Do: Inspired by the song of the same name by Hozier. ElevenxJack. 1342 AD. Cardiff, Wales. Jack- still buried in the ground thanks to his brother. 11th Doctor- in Wales to attend a bi-millennial faire for the travelers of the galaxy. Eleven rescues his good friend while Jack is rescued by a stranger.

Harry Potter

I have so many Bill WeasleyxHarry Potter feels right now… expect something with them. Most likely soulmate!AU. Probably increased age!difference too (10 years just isn’t enough sometimes).

Brideshead Revisited

Since I commissioned a BR fic (thanks Ray! I’m excited :)), I have all these ideas. Fix-it 20 years after Charles and Sebastian last see each other, maybe.

No judgement please ;). My newest fandom (it’s only been a month omg). And this fandom has so much drama, oh my god. I am only staying on the fringes, and reading a shit ton of ff. Yes, its RP, and I know there is a whole ton of baggage and hate attached to that, but i don’t give a fuck but honestly, it will probably be such an AU that it’s really only face and name claims. My current idea: soulmate, age!difference, 1 famous/ 1 non famous Zarry.

I have no idea if any of these will ever get written (except for 004, ‘cause Opal is amazing and more on top of things than me), but I will keep on hoping! And honestly, these ideas are only a fraction of what I have. So who knows :)

Queen Albums: Blind Reaction

Hello all! So, I’m a new a Queen fan, although I’ve been listening to their music more closely for a couple of months now. I’ve always been familiar with their greatest hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Under Pressure”, etc. I never really cared to listen closely until recently when I watched the movie and fell in love with the band. I listened to music a lot more recently, but haven’t dug into the albums really besides A Night at the Opera. So, without further delay, I’m gonna listen to their albums chronologically and react to them! We’re gonna begin first with their first album Queen. Let’s begin! (Disclaimer: this is probably not going to be professional in any sort of way.)

Keep Yourself Alive:

- Alright, right off the bat we have Brian playing guitar, and I’m digging it! It definitely is heavier than what I’ve heard in most of their later songs. If I remember right, this album had more heavy metal in it, so I’m not surprised. I love the sound of it though!

- Oh! I hear some stick and bass from Roger and John, very nice! I always love John’s bass work, his parts are so fun!

- Ah, here’s Freddie! So cool to hear him sing other songs besides the ones I know!

-Oh, is this song about chasing ambition? Or struggling with the chase for it? The lyrics are very interesting to me because they remind of Death On Two Legs.

- Okay, I should mention now that I’m watching the video of this song, and I love how glittery their outfits are. They all look so pretty lol.

- Hey, they’re all singing! Cool that they were doing stuff with the three’s voices from the start.

- Roger and Brian both get solos, and they sound so cool! Roger’s actually grabbed my attention more than Brian’s, but both were rad!

Okay, this was a good song! It definitely isn’t as crazy instrumentally, which makes sense since this is their first album and they’re trying to put themselves out there. I definitely can hear the heavy metal influence in this song and I’m curious as to how that shows in the rest of the album. Alright, next!

Doing Alright:

Oh! I recognize this title! Let’s see what it’s all about!

- Starts with some quiet piano playing, definitely different from the first song!

- Okay, so this is definitely a lot more chill and contemplative than the first song. With Freddie’s singing and Brian’s guitar work, it makes for a melancholy song.

- I really like the lyric in this song too. The music and the lyric really help capture the meaning of song so well. Everyone has times where they’re only getting by, and this song really encapsulates that pretty well.

- WOAH WOAH WOAH It just got VERY heavy metal all of the sudden. That’s very interesting! It almost shifts the tone of the song.

- Oh, it’s back to the original melody. Oh! Brian’s soloing again! Always nice to have that. I’m assuming that’s always a bit of a theme with Queen, since at lot of the music I’ve listened to with them always has Brian soloing at some point.

- Ugh, that is a gorgeous ending with the band members harmonizing and with the quiet piano.

I really liked how this song ended. I liked the song in general! I’m not sure about the shifts between the softer melody and the harder melody, but I still thought it was cool! I doubt they thought of this when making those shifts, but to me I felt like they did that to represent the scared uncertainty the person in the song was feeling about the next day. Shifting between believing that everything would be find and panicking that it won’t be. All in all, I enjoyed the song, and I can’t wait to hear the next one!

Great Rat King:

With a title like that, there already is a 30% increased chance of me liking it. We’ll see!

- This is definitely heavier, I can tell from the guitar and the ambience.

- The lyrics are definitely all Freddie. Only he would write about a Great Rat King and relate to religion.

- Actually, speaking of religion. Is this about a story in the Bible? I’m genuinely curious.

- Dang, I hear some of the multi layering voice stuff they do later on! It’s so interesting to see them trying this stuff even in their first album, to see the root of it all!

- The melody’s interesting, but honestly I’m in awe of Brian’s musical versatility. I think I heard three different types of guitar throughout the song and he played all of them beautifully. I really love the solos he has in this one, they are impressive.

- No slack on Roger or John either. Both of their parts on this song were fun to listen to too! I loved Roger’s solo at the end!

I enjoyed this song too. It isn’t my favorite song ever, but I can enjoy it’s creativity and weirdness of lyric that only Freddie has. I’m not much of a heavy metal person, but I didn’t mind this song too much! I might listen to this album more after this reaction.

My Fairy King

Ooo boy! This looks like another Freddie one! Let’s see what it’s like!

- Huh, starts off with some dissonant guitar notes, pretty cool! Almost reminds me of the UFO sounds Bowie makes in Starman

- AHH ROGER’S FALSETTO, I’M MELTING FU-

Sorry, I just REALLY love that man’s falsetto, it’s almost god like, I swear.

- I really like the bass and guitar bouncing of each other! Gives it a cool jive to it!

- My god, that piano work and Freddie hitting those higher notes, I didn’t know he sounded that good in his higher register!

- Dang, some of this is giving me flashbacks to Lap of the Gods. I’m always down for when Queen tries to make a song sound otherworldly or alien. It’s so neat to see what these four come up with!

- Oh wow, that got pretty fast at the end! I like that speed up actually, it was pretty lit!

- Before I forget, the lyric in this song was distinct too! Freddie always seems to focus on old stories or fairytales and is able to make something original from it, which is pretty neat! I like that a lot!

I think this is my favorite song currently on the album. It’s just so weird and creative, and I love the melody and the voices that Freddie and Roger do for the fairies. Although, Liar is up next, so I could be swayed pretty quickly.

Liar

- Oh, so this song starts off more with percussion and clapping, cool!

- And it has a video! Actually, I’d seen part of it on an Ashley Ann vid I believe. Where they sing “All Day Long!”

- Hey, I like riffs Brian have, those are cool as shit! Really livens up the melody!

- “I’ve traveled to Mercury and Mars” Oh my god Freddie. XD Always gotta flaunt the new name I suppose.

- The melody in this is different, but in a good way. This feels like a more familiar Queen song to me, something that is more like them. Of course, My Fairy King is pretty distinctly them too.

- The lyrics are so easily analyzed, I love it. I can’t wait to listen to this a thousand times and try to make a story out of the album.

- YAS it’s the part where they go “All Day Long!” God, I don’t know why but I love that part so much. It’s catchy!

- Since I’m watching a video of it, I must say Freddie is really strutting his stuff on stage! I’m loving it! Also, they all look so pretty still. It’s probably the same performance but I want to point it out lol.

- Yay! Deaky gets a solo! And it sounds super nice! It’s always awesome seeing the bass player get a time to shine! You go dude!!

Yup, I love this song a lot! I don’t know if it beats My Fairy King, but I can say I really enjoyed the song a lot!

The Night Comes Down

Am I the only one that’s getting ominous vibes from that title? No? Well, let’s find out if my instincts are off or not.

- Oh! Never mind, it’s a Brian song! His song’s aren’t usually scary. We’re good!

- Okay, that first chord reminds me of I’m in Love With My Car and it honestly scared me for a sec lol.

- The beginning of this song almost sounds like something you’d hear on Dateline, vaguely. I wonder if it’s in a minor chord and that’s why?

- Wow, the lyrics in this are sad. “Colouring, now all I see is gray.” Damn, I knew Brian struggled with depression for a long time, but I didn’t think it really set in until his first divorce. Dang it, now I want to hug the old bastard. I hate seeing and hearing people suffer.

- I will say that I love the part where Freddie and Roger harmonize together, they sound good together in a different way from Roger and Brian’s good. I like it. I wonder if I’ll hear that more in the later albums.

- This song is mostly instrumental, which I’m fine with! Good instrumentation and melody is one of Queen’s strong points, so I’m not surprised that they focused on it a bit more in this song, especially since Liar was a little more lyric focused. It seems most of this album focused on instrumental stuff, which is cool since they were trying to find their sound and such!

Personally, I loved this song too! I love quieter songs, so listening to this was a nice breather from the other songs! Although I’m not sure I should listen to it when I’m in a down mood. Anyways, next one up is a Roger song, which means it’s probably the pure opposite of this one, yay!

Modern Times Rock n Roll

- Oh wow! This is fast, me gusta!!

- Simple beat and melody, but really smart lyrics!

- Actually, more on the lyric! I remember reading some place that Brian talked about how smart and aware Roger was of the Rock and Roll scene during the 70’s and that he knew that there was going to be a new wave coming through pretty soon. I feel like this is Roger’s way of commenting on that and that Queen was going to be part of this new wave whether anybody liked it or not. I know that his songs are usually very political and social, so it’s nice to see that he’s been doing that from the beginning!

- Oh, I love the wails that Brian’s doing on his guitar, that’s good shit!!

I haven’t really got much else to say on this ditty. It’s an interesting first song for Roger, but it so definitely defines him, at least to me anyways. Onwards to the next song!

Son and Daughter

- This song is slower, but kind of has an epic sound.

- Not a lot of chaotic things happening like in the other songs, kind of a more straight forward rock song, which I like.

- Again, the lyrics intrigue me. It seems like it’s talking about doubles standards for men, or maybe it’s talking about homosexuality or anything! I really like they are vague enough to let the listeners interpret things, because they can get their own meaning out of it.

- It’s a bit of a heavier song, but it’s not bad. It’s a got a beat and a melody. It doesn’t have that standard chaotic Queen mark but I’m not gonna judge. This is a first album, after all.

- I’m surprised there aren’t any solos in this, but at the same time I’m almost glad because it was feeling formulaic to have Brian do a solo every song (even if he is amazing).

- That speed up was super interesting! I’m sad that it didn’t lead into the next song though. I was so ready for Jesus to be the part two of this one. Oh well!

I liked this one, but it doesn’t really stick out to me in anyway. Even then, it was a good song!

Jesus

- Welp, this is definitely the most religious out of all of them!

- Dang, the song’s actually pretty tame sounding, which makes sense. They don’t want to go too crazy singing about the Lord.

- I’ve noticed something. This song kind of sounds like an old balled or hymn, which is pretty cool considering genre and subject matter. That is all.

- Freddie’s kind of scatting is honey to my ears, I love it madly.

- Same to Brian’s solo work. Even if I get annoyed with how formulaic that can be, doesn’t mean he doesn’t sound wonderful every time he plays.

- I really like the echo effect! Kind of snapped me back into attention when I heard it!

This one was also good but eh to me. The one thing that really grabbed my attention from it was that it was fairly religious, which caught me off guard a little. Queen’s covered a lot in their music, so it shouldn’t surprise me, but I’m surprised that they sang this much about Christianity and such in this early album. More on that later, last song!

Seven Seas of Rhye (Instrumental)

- Wow, that’s all I got to say! I forgot that this was the song with the cool piano part in it, so I’m hyped for when I get to listen to it all the way through! A good decision on their part to leave that in there, a good tease for their next album!

Overall: I liked this album! I’ll admit, I was spoiled most likely when I listened to A Night at the Opera, but I still enjoyed this one! It was really cool to see the band’s beginnings post-Smile, and seeing them get their hands dirty with composing music. I was surprised at the religious undertones of the album, but didn’t mind it. It let them mess around creatively with some things, like getting influences from old ballads or hymns in Jesus. It was neat to see that they were doing stuff like the voice overlaying and solos from the beginning and I’m honestly proud of them for sticking with that to the point of perfection. I’m definitely returning to this album for Liar and My Fairy King, those two are my favorites easily from this album, besides The Night Comes Down, of course.

First up, a new fashion trend that’s less about what you wear, and more about what you don’t. Specifically, onola gems. These pale blue incandescent crystals have been showing up on runways all over the place since Opal Sky used them heavily in their Spring ’46 collection. I’m sure some of you deep scanners out there have spotted my festive Venti slips that are just oozing with the suckers. Cute as hell, but that might not be enough to save them from being trashed. A fashion design collective calling themselves Last Impression have started a movement to get manufacturers to boycott the use of the little sparkles. Turns out that the mines in Tyrol where they’re collected may not be the nicest place to work. The group’s been sharing some pretty nasty vid of the poor conditions there, and it’s heartbreaking. Celebrities like Uvara, Karen Masters and Trilo have already joined the boycott effort, and as of right now, so am I. ’Cause fashion is just as much about reflecting who you are on the inside as it is what you look like on the outside, right?

Next, we got some musical mayhem going on. From what we hear, not all is synching on the Cries of Whispers tour. Musically, the pairing of electro-thunk sensation Miss Nomer with the traditional Xi’an choral septet Nyalāth has been earning tons of exube reviews from fans and critics, but apparently, backstage things weren’t as harmonious. Now, we haven’t received deets on exactly what the drama was — I don’t buy for a second the spectrum theory that it’s the food smells coming from Nyalāth’s dressing room — but our tipster’s reporting that Miss Nomer has officially broken her contract and is ending the tour early. While normally this would be devastating news, it has the makings of something a bit more dire since the tour was officially sponsored by the Xi’an government.

Planned as part of the push to get that treaty thing everyone’s been talking about passed, they had hoped this concert tour would spread a little xeno-goodwill around. Definitely an ill omen if Miss Nomer — who had the fortitude to date the infamously annoying Sess Tandi for three whole weeks — can’t make peace with them. With her exiting, the organizers are desperately pinging other musicians to take Miss Nomer’s place. My vote? Raz Ditto. Those otherworldly Xi’an trimonic chords with Raz’s soulful wail? Yes, please.

From there we go to the case of the missing Cass. Tons of you who tuned in to watch the new series Then There Were Three last night were surprised to see the role of Agent Styles played not by infamous gadabout Ellroy Cass, as showcased in the trailer released a few months back, but by the adequately handsome Tyrese Leroc. Reaching out, we got confirmation that the studio decided to “go in a different direction for the role.” Or in other words, they spent a lot of time and credits at the last minute to reshoot all the scenes with Cass so that they wouldn’t be associated with his all-consuming wreck of a life. For those of you keeping track, this is the third major role poor Cass has lost in the wake of his drug fueled crash and burn at the Crimson Tower premiere two months ago. Of course, the first two hadn’t started shooting yet, so this one has got to be stinging a bit more.

I’ll admit it. I’m getting worried about our golden boy. After all his slip-ups and comebacks, has he finally vented all his good will? Scary thought. I’m not sure I want to live in a ‘verse void of his scandals and overacting. I mean, just think about all he’s given us this year alone. Glitter abs? Jumper juice? The phrase “I just cassed out”?

To help him rise phoenix-like once again, I wanted to use a bit of our precious StarWatch time to put all of Cass’s celebrity ass-hatery in proper historical context. And people say this show’s not educational and stuff! I am one hundred percent stoked to welcome friend and historian, Jane Osbar, professor of new media at U of R and author of Pixels and Pain: Digital Emotional Transcendence. For the next couple of shows, she is going to highlight some of the biggest celeb scandals of the past few centuries, all of which make the stuff Cass’s been up to look all kinds of tame.Thanks for being on the show again, Jane!

JANE: You know as soon as you comm, Callie, I come running. Ancient celebrity gossip is my passion.

I am totally picturing a class full of confused students wondering where the heck you are right now.

JANE: No way, they totally know where I am. StarWatch is required viewing for all my classes. Hey, guys!

Are you serious? This might be the most touched I’ve ever been other than that time I got to meet Jo Niar. Surprisingly into hugging, that one. Speaking of inappropriate actions, care to share the first shocker you’ve selected for us?

JANE: I thought we’d start with Gil Taggart from way back in 2762.

Oh man, I love this story. So dark!

JANE: It is definitely a skin crawler. Basically, imagine the most attractive person you can and that was Gil for people back then. When you see the pics of him, it doesn’t quite translate because of the long hair braids, but take my word, those were totally in style.

Our fashion expert, Nisco, has promised me those are coming back but I refuse to believe him. Anyway, Gil. Super-hot.

JANE: Right. He has fame and fortune, and then one day he’s flying to some big party, and his ship runs into some engine trouble. The pilot sends out an emergency signal, but it cuts off almost immediately. It was still on long enough to attract the attention of a nearby repair station, so they send out a trawler just in case there’s some credits to be made. When they approach the ship they can’t raise anyone on the comms, so they send someone over to investigate.

It’s like something straight out of vid.

JANE: They EVA over, cut their way into a hatch, and find the pilot shot to death in a pool of blood in a room with three stasis pods, each one containing a greenish-skinned person also shot to death. Gil is nowhere to be found. And on top of all that, it turns out that the ship had been set to self-destruct, but thanks to the same mechanical problem that had killed the engine, it didn’t work.

Can you imagine finding that on an abandoned ship? Goodbye, sleep.

JANE: It’s even worse once you know what he had been doing with those bodies. The Advocacy would find out that as Gil was getting older, he had been more and more preoccupied about the signs of aging. Somehow he had come to believe that the copper rich blood of people from Lorona would help him stay young, but only if he got it directly from the source. So for going on five years, he had been storing people in those pods and using them for forced blood transfusions. He did them constantly, hence why he had to bring them when he traveled. When the ship broke down, Gil panicked, killed everyone, set the self-destruct and fled.

And no one ever found where he went, right?

JANE: Yup. Vanished. Though there are some rumors in Kesseli that Gil stills roams the caves sucking the blood of the innocent.

How’s that for putting Cass doing a bit too much flow in perspective? At least he’s not vampiring all up on people. On that happy thought, StarWatch is taking a quick break. Don’t you dare go anywhere.
