Finally posting my first Rarijack one-shot for the Grand Galloping 20s, "So This Is Love." This is the first time I've posted my writing (or written any fanfiction) in years and years, so lemme know what you think.
Summary: After a mutually unsuccessful night at the Grand Galloping Gala, both Miss Rarity and April-Jacqueline find themselves at their wits' end in the Canterlot castle gardens while the gala continues without them.
Preview: Polished marble sculptures and manicured jade hedges glistened by the light of the moon and her stars. The gardens of Canterlot Castle were beautiful. They would be much more beautiful if shared with another, Miss Rarity thought to herself bitterly. “Surprised to see you all on your lonesome out here.” She looked down the gravel path to a figure sitting at a stone bench. A woman, fitted in a fetchingly tailored pinstripe suit –– Miss Rarity’s suit actually, she designed it herself –– a perfectly curled ponytail –– she had spent nearly half an hour ironing out the flyaways –– and that obnoxiously drab stetson hat –– no relation to Miss Rarity. A half-spent cigarette fell from her lip, stamped out under her heel. ...

A history monograph may or might not have an overarching story or chronological framework; the author's range of structure for the job usually reveals quite a lot about both book's topic and its supply base. While examining every term of every section is just a laudable goal, many students only do not need the time and energy to study a four hundred-page book from cover to cover. To get probably the most out of a record text, focus on a few critical areas and check the remainder for context.
1st, if the monograph features a foreword or an introduction, study it to gain a sense with the author's motivations for selecting this certain topic, sources, and structure over other individuals. It is actually typical for an author to start a project using a particular aim or subject in mind only to watch it morph into some thing absolutely unexpected. If the foreword is by a different author, this can indicate how other scholars view the book or happen to be capable to produce use of it prior to its printing.
Second, be certain to study at least the initial and final sentence of every paragraph to identify regardless of whether the info it includes is worth reading in detail. If the author has chapter titles, they are a fairly great guide to every chapter's primary point and may serve as a quick reference when deciding which ones have to have one of the most interest.

Chapters might happen to be rearranged or omitted; certain lines of thought may well have been tinkered with based on critiques of prior printings.
When writing the evaluation, construct a basic skeleton of basic components about which to frame the analysis.
· Start with a short introduction with the operate itself and its author. The book may be a radical departure of method or topic matter for an author; hold this in thoughts when reading the rest in the text, to find out when the author seems uncomfortable-awkward phrasing and structuring are often a hint that an author is not yet sure-footed with new material.
· Appear at the structure and flow with the book as a whole; do the chapters fit properly with each other, flowing from a single to the subsequent, or will be the transitions awkward and stilted? May be the language simply accessible even to non-experts inside the field, or is it additional densely packed and jargon-filled, aimed instead in the author's own peers?
· Examine what works effectively in regards to the text itself; use examples in the book itself as help (incorporate a minimum of web page numbers for any direct quotes employed).
· Examine what does not perform nicely concerning the text; why does not it function? Again, use examples from the book itself as help.
· Appear in the sources the author chose to use when researching. Are these sources mainly primary-documents and other writings generated by contemporaries in the course of the time periods covered by the text-or secondary-analyses by third parties at a later date? Does the author clarify why one sort was favored more than the other? Authors sometimes exclude complete classes of sources that may possibly clutter the monograph with also a lot of extraneous specifics or that they believe would hinder their analysis in some way.
· Does the author use plenty of direct quotations in the chosen sources, or are sources applied much more to provide a foundation for the evaluation, with quotations confined for the book's foot- or finish notes? At times the presence of lots of direct quotations and pretty densely packed notes indicate that a book is actually a newly published doctoral dissertation or that the author feels it essential to establish authority together with the selected topic matter.
· Does the author challenge integrated sources for possible biases and consider how the context in which every single was produced could impact its content material and viewpoint, or are sources basically taken at face value? Are any incorporated sources potentially problematic in this regard?
· Conclude by examining how the book is comparable to and differs from other performs in the same subject. Look at what the author was trying to contribute to extant scholarship on the topic by writing the book. Was the try effective or not?
