*SPOILERS* Analyzing Rachel in BTS and LIS: After finishing both game in chronological order
Okay, I know there's an argument about the value of BTS and it's relation to LIS, but after playing both I think I have a better understanding of Rachel Amber and her place in these games.
To understand Rachel's character we have to break the different parts that make up Rachel. Some may not agree, but hear me out; also, leave any feedback in the comment section of questions or counter arguments, please.
1. Rachel's personality:
I want to dissect this like she's a sims character. The over all key to her personality, I feel, is adaptability. What is she compared to all of the time? A chameleon, why? Because she has the ability to adapt to any group of people with ease, like camouflage. This affects how people perceive Rachel. As the player, many were swayed by Rachel to do whatever she wanted (even for romance) and at times I even had a hard time telling her no (like Chloe doing the play cause Rachel said, "for me?" I would of done the play too in Chloe's position). She's pretty, true. However, Rachel's charming. I've noticed how Rachel could charm her way out of trouble. Sure she's an actress, but she talked to people in a comforting manner. Again in relation to swaying a crowd.
One trait that I thought was interesting was Rachel's short temper. Chloe also had this, but it was mild compared to Rachel. She's a "HULK SMASH!" Type of angry person. Breaking a bottle and table, hitting a psycho in the face with a two by four or pushing the psycho for touching her GF. Stopping two sleazy guys from hurting her future GF. I see a pattern.
She's adventerous. I think we're all aware of this trait, so I won't elaborate. Rachel is empathetic and emotional. We see how she can identify people's true intent and connect with others on an emotional level. She did this with Chloe, the whole school and even harder personalities like Nathan and Mr. Jeffershit.
Lastly, Rachel is smart. Rationality is questionable, but she is quite bright. To make large groups of people praise and love you takes skill, but to make them trust you is genius. That isn't something everyone can do. She does this with ease. She's academically inclined and is a fast learner to be able to act on sheer will (like the proposal she did with Chloe in the tempest).
2. Rachel's goals:
I feel this really plays to Rachel as a person. She like attention, but I've noticed that she's not too fond of being the center of attention. You see this in her actions. Not conforming to one group, preferring to want to hang out alone with one other person, feeling pressured when parents shower her with to much affection or gratitude and that small moment when she said "I need space" and showed it when dealing with hardships. Meaning the girl likes her space.
Traveling is obviously her goal. Rachel doesn't like to settle, which is a personality type that seems to be genetic apparently. It is also understandable for her age. But, we can see she likes to move and is always wanting to do more. Even with small things. Taking a train when ditching with Chloe, never fully committing to one club or even having hobbies that require discovery.
3. Rachel's sexuality:
I think Rachel might be bisexual, but in specific terms something is telling me she's a homoromantic bisexual. That means she's physically attracted to both (from a binary perspective to keep things simple) sexes, but is only romantically attracted to females. If you notice Rachel romantic involvement we see a pattern. She hasn't dated anyone else at her school (if you exclude Chloe). It is obvious that she can get the attention of the males at her school, but she doesn't talk or approach any of them. In BTS, she's still gets male attention, but doesn't bring up any attraction to any of the males. You know who she does confess slight attraction for? Steph. In the episode 3 she says, "Steph is cute." Meaning she's aware of Steph's attractiveness (let's be honest here, I low-key wanted to get at Steph in a romantic way with Chloe. Steph is hot). The only other person she does that with is Chloe. In the "after the play" scene, Rachel makes a scenario where Chloe gets hit on by a guy and Rachel tells them to back off. Like...the men are competition! Even in the junkyard scene where a romantic connection could happen (I guess?) With a person she dates in the future, she doesn't even look at him. She also seems more frightened and replused by Frank (in my opinion) more than anything. And when the other guy flirts with Chloe, She pushes him off in disgust and jealousy.
In LIS she is involved with Chloe and two other males. I went back and read her letters and noticed a pattern. She doesn't express any genuine feelings of romantic attraction. Jeffershit was a little tricky, but it seemed more like admiration mixed with physical attraction. With Chloe, Rachel would say things like, "you understand me", "I feel safe with you", "I trust you". This shows that emotional connection. She doesn't do this with any male (unless you count her father, but he's not in this category). Jeffershit she admired and Frank she used him to leave. That doesn't sound like love to me. She fought a drug dealer (getting stabbed in the process) for Chloe and wanted to runaway with Chloe. That sounds like a stereotype associated with love to me.
So what does this have to do with the story? We got a chance to see who Rachel really was aside from gossip and other people's perspectives. She was a lively girl who was a free spirit. She was brave and stood up for what she believed and was queer. Unfortunately she was put in a bad position that lead to her inevitable death. However, what can we debunk?
- Rachel was cheating on Chloe because she didn't care for her:
It's still up for debate on whether Rachel technically cheated, but she did clearly love and care for Chloe.
- Rachel was a whore:
We can't confirm whether or not she slept with Jefferson, but she did not have her way with a lot of people in that context. It is evident that she was not a type of person to be with everyone. She didn't really date until she met Chloe.
- Rachel didn't care for Chloe and their relationship was one sided:
Play BTS. I think the gameplay speaks for itself.
- Rachel didn't care about anyone:
Again play BTS. She was shown to care for many people.
- Rachel was super manipulative:
Read my other post about that subject. It's too long of an explaination to put here.
I think Rachel's purpose in these two games was understanding the levels to people we generalize. We think we know someone or a group of people and label them. But, adding a personality and humanity to a person you realize they were so much more, allowing us to have a deeper connection to who they (people who died in horrible ways or people we stereotype) were. Rachel symbolizes the misinterpret story's we see when a life has been unduly taken and how death and mystery affects us all. Changing our perspective of a person who died to a loved one who was taken too soon from the truths of our realities of our dimensions.

Barcelona 3-0 Liverpool: Lionel Messi smashes 600th goal for Catalan side
There we were, thinking there was no reason why Liverpool could not win this draw, if the reason you just couldn't likes such thoughts popped up in Barcelona
Lionel Messi . Always a privilege of course to be in his presence, but boy does he ruin the night for those who dare to dream about a visit to Nou Camp. Liverpool did well when I scored second place in Barcelona. And not only relatively well.
Manchester United that were played and castled last month. Really good. Good enough to be up to standard. They had several good scoring opportunities. One fell on 12-meter James Milner. You always love 12 meter Milner. He shot straight at Marc-Andre Stegen in the Barcelona goal.

During his 100th captain competition, the winner of the five-time Ballon d & # 39; Or entered the Catalan side to be completely under control
Credit Sergio Busquets, too, with getting out on the tactics that would change the game. It was – wait – give it to Messi. When he picked up the ball halfway in Liverpool, he had many teammates looking for positions that were easier to hit. But none of them was Messi. So Busquets looked up, saw where Messi was, and hit him instead.
Messi turned around and ran with Liverpool players in possession of the ball and gave the ball to Sergi Roberto. He couldn't help it, but Luis Suarez was able to hit the bar with his shot. Guess who it became? And Messi just carried his run, with the ball at his feet, almost to the empty net. The frustration of goalkeeper Alisson, as he kicked it in the aftermath, even harder than the scorer, summed up Liverpool's disappointment. They didn't deserve that.
So a third was really hard to take. But that's Messi for you. He's a genius. So when he stood over the ball after Fabio had admitted the free kick, there was always a chance that he would crawl out of Alisson & # 39; s hand over the wall and in the top corner of the net. That is exactly what it did. On the other hand, Mohamed Salah, with the goal open, hit a post. He is very good. But he is not a Messi. Who is?
The pre-match accusation was that Liverpool had set up a negative; the action itself was in contradiction. Yes, Jurgen Klopp had chosen Georginio Wijnaldum to play the role of the recovering Robert Firmino – with the more defensively oriented Joe Gomez in the right-behind role of Trent Alexander-Arnold – but that didn't mean that Liverpool played with caution
They had a go, and shared ownership, but Barcelona is a very good side and Firmino was a big boss. It would have been even better if Wijnaldum had been used more conservatively. Very quickly there was one with more admiration for the elite-level skills forward, given an understudy in the role.

Alisson dives to the left and the subtle flick that put Suarez on the ball ensured it flew past him in the net for the opener
To play the way Liverpool wants – or Manchester City, Tottenham, Barcelona, Ajax, Real Madrid – requires a range of technical skills that even the best playing players leave behind. Wijnaldum was excellent for Liverpool in midfield this season.
But then he does not let the ball come to him from all angles as Firmino does every week. Killing the ball at that speed, with so much attention, and moving the ball in a fraction of a second requires extremely high skills. All too often the ball bounced against Wijnaldum, which would stick to Firmino.
So although they had a large share of possession and were clearly a threat, chances were that they were not their fault, but that they did their best – but it meant scanning. Sadio Mane went over for a penalty shake that was rightly denied and Clement Lenglet was booked after he lost Mohamed Salah and pulled him back, but Liverpool had only one real chance in the first half and it came after 35 minutes.

Jordan Henderson, who stood up for 26 minutes for the injured Naby Keita – a break that seemed to disrupt Liverpool's rhythm – threw an excellent cross from the right that fell at Mane's feet.
The accumulation of Barcelona was measured more and it was the will of Liverpool defense that only one goal separated the teams at halftime. After only three minutes, Philippe Coutinho found Ivan Rakitic, who was thwarted by a block from Gomez.
The tackle by Andrew Robertson who held Lionel Messi after 13 minutes, however, was almost as nice as a goal. From that position, Messi has literally scored hundreds of goals. The late run to the central position in the penalty area, see a place that no one else has identified – despite the fact that it is so clearly dangerous – and identify a way to get there by stealth.
It is almost form-changing, his ability to move around the field unnoticed, while in reality every step must be accompanied by sirens. But Robertson recognized him, recognized the danger, saw the future, what would happen next. When Messi arrived at the ball, the full-back met him there and his tackle took the ball to a corner.
Messi seemed genuinely shocked by this development; as if the adults had discovered their secret hiding place. I responded with a great dribble two minutes later that ended with a pass to Coutinho and a shot well saved by Alisson.

Keita's disappearance in 24 minutes, however, hurt Liverpool. Henderson & # 39; s first engagement was to get nutmeg, and he had not restored his balance when it all went wrong for Liverpool on his flank. Gomez's pitch was intercepted and Liverpool never got the ball back from there until he was picked out of the net for the restart. Countino was involved, but the cross belonged to the dangerous Jordi Alba.
It was perfectly timed, but Luis Suarez's run turned it into poetry. The timing, the execution, it was a wonderful example of purposeful craftsmanship, shots between the middle halves to come forward in clean air and hit the ball past Alisson.
It seemed to be one for VAR, but repetitions showed Suarez running so fast, so alert, that it was a good two meters when the cross was delivered. He also celebrated – none of that fake respect for the football of the prince of darkness. More power for him too.
Liverpool had the feeling of celebrating almost two minutes after rest. With good work from Wijnaldum, James Milner saw the first real save of the game from Marc-Andre to Stegen in the Barcelona goal. From the next attack, Salah hit a low shot and cut right from the right, making Stegen look down quickly to knock it around the far post.

How Brands Can Convert Data To Insight
Which person, from another field, do you think advertisers could learn most from?
One name that might not spring to mind is Abraham Wald.
Wald, who Matthew Syed wrote about in Black Box Thinking, was the grandson of a rabbi, born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1902. He was a mathematical prodigy – at primary school he was correcting his teachers and at secondary school he was correcting his textbooks.
After a glittering early career at the University of Vienna, his success stalled in the 1930s with the rise of anti-Semitism. In 1938 he fled to America. That decision probably saved his life. By the end of the war his whole family, bar one brother, had been killed.
Once in the US he worked for the government’s Applied Mathematics Panel, putting his talents to the war effort. Specifically, how to reduce the death rate among European bomber crews. Theirs was such a dangerous job that about half of bomber crews died during the war.
Wald’s team needed to determine which parts of the planes should be armored. It was a tricky calculation. Too much and the bombers would be slow and cumbersome, easy targets for German anti-aircraft defenses. Too little and the crew were exposed – a handful of hits might bring them down.
The researchers set to work collecting data. As planes returned from a sortie his team recorded which parts had been punctured by bullets. When hundreds of bombers had been logged, a pattern emerged. As the diagram clearly shows, the areas most regularly hit were the wings, fuselage and tail.
The top brass was ecstatic; Wald’s methodology had convincingly identified the critical parts to armor. Case closed.
But was it?
Wald’s interpretation was radically different. His bosses had fallen victim to “survivorship bias”: assuming returning planes were representative of all aircraft. That was a mistake. The data collected omitted the crucial planes: downed ones. They held the clue to solving the problem, not the returning planes.
The parts peppered with bullet holes could be ignored on returning planes, after all they had limped home. It was the unscathed spots that needed armoring. Any plane hit in these places was at the bottom of the English Channel.
Wald’s counter-intuitive thinking was quickly tested and shown to improve survival rates. His approach became standard US policy until the Vietnam War.
This is more than a historical anecdote. It’s a guide to how best to use data, whether in the military or marketing. There are four key principles that can be drawn from Wald’s experience:
1. Don’t Rely On Intuition
Wald was a genius (a genuine one, not in the way we now bandy about the term) yet even he didn’t rely on introspection alone. He collected data, and only then, developed his hypothesis.
Far too many plans and approaches are based on gut feeling alone. This is an issue because agency staff are not representative. A study by Newsworks, the trade body for British newspapers, investigated this problem by recruiting 30 young media planners to complete the IPA Touchpoints diary for a week. This meant that their media habits could be compared to the broader population.
The differences were stark. Take TV. Young planners watched half the volume of TV compared to the population as a whole. Other media showed a similar variation. This discrepancy is a concern because of what psychologists term the false consensus effect. It’s the idea that we over-estimate how much others share our beliefs and behaviors.
Again this bias is prevalent in agencies. Claire Linford and I tested this by asking agency planners to estimate what proportion of the population had an iPhone. We then compared that data with whether they had an iPhone or not. Those who owned one thought half the population did, while those who didn’t put the figure at just a third.
Relying on intuition is dangerous – it leads to plans that would influence us but not the consumer. Instead, every plan needs data at its heart. And Wald gives us guidance on how to achieve that.
2. Collect Data In The Simplest Manner That Answers The Question
Wald’s methodology required pen, paper and a numerate assistant. Basic even for the 1940s.
This is important for marketing as too often we obsess over the complexity of our methodologies: econometrics, machine learning, artificial intelligence and so on. It’s as if we believe we can replace the hard work of thinking with the high costs of measurement.
But insights don’t need high budgets. For a brief into a male incontinence drug we wanted to help the planners understand the target audience. We had no budget so we used a technique we call ‘method planning’.
Over a weekend we texted the planners at random times. Each time they received a text they had to stop what they were doing and get to a toilet within two minutes. This helped the planners understand the experience of the target audience. From this experiment we uncovered two useful insights. First, incontinence is not a great concern when people are at home. After all, a toilet is a few seconds away. It’s when they’re out of home that it’s a worry. This led us to recommend media which reached people at the maximum moment of concern, such as tube (subway) car panels.
Second, our participants mentioned that while the experiment was inconvenient for them, it was also a burden on their families. This led us to the insight that maybe it was better to encourage older, male sufferers to rectify the issue not for their benefit, but for their family’s.
The cost of all this? About 70 cents on my phone bill.
Good insights can come from the simplest of places. Only if we recognize this will we undertake insight generation as regularly as we should.
3. Focus On The Representativeness Of The Data
A seemingly simplistic point but the majority of online measurement collects short term effects only: sales, views or visits. This is a problem as what we measure shapes what we do. If we just measure the short-term then that is what we optimize to: more budgets go to the best performers, while the worst are struck off the plan.
And if we optimize just to short-term metrics then we under-perform in the long term. Binet and Field have showed in their analysis of the IPA Effectiveness database, that advertising that works best in the short term isn’t ideal in the long term.
4. Data Alone Are Worthless, Analysis Is Key
Data are nothing but raw material. They’re a necessary condition for insight, but not a condition that necessarily creates insight.
Henri Poincaré, the 19th century French mathematician, pointed out the difference between science and facts. What he said is as relevant for insight and data:
“Science is built of facts the way a house is built of bricks: but an accumulation of facts is no more science than a pile of bricks is a house.”
And just as facts require theory to become science, so do data require theory and analysis to become insight.
If agencies want a competitive advantage they need a combination of best in class data collection and interpretative skills. The best source of those interpretative skills is the study of human decisions making: behavioral science and social psychology. These tell us of biases like the survivorship bias but also hundreds of others that affect consumer decision makings.
Stop Worrying About The Changing Man
The experience of Wald is useful. But there are plenty of other historical figures to learn from. We shouldn’t ignore them because our technology has changed – fundamental human motivations are the same as they ever were.
As Bill Bernbach said:
“Human nature hasn’t changed for a million years. It won’t even change in the next million years. Only the superficial things have changed. It is fashionable to talk about the changing man. A communicator must be concerned with the unchanging man with his obsessive drive to survive, to be admired, to succeed, to love, to take care of his own.”
The agencies that focus most on the unchanging man will win the insight war.
