I’ll repeat this at the end of every single post: speaking as someone who writes, it would be really cool if you guys decide to leave a review (or a comment, if the story is on AO3) in the stories you read, especially the unfinished ones. It really motivates the authors, and receiving a compliment is always a mood lifter. I’ve seen some authors updating stories after years because of nice reviews, so… yeah, this is just an idea.

Heyyyyy I was wondering if you'd have any Klapollo fics you'd rec? There's just... so many of them on Ao3, I don't know where to really start digging into the pairing. Smut's okay (and appreciated) as are otherwise M/E rated fics, but I dig fluffier stuff too - and long and short fic; it's all good, as long as it's actually good. Halp. What are your faves?

Hey!! Not super sure if I’m the best person to answer this since I haven’t read a tonnn of klapollo fic recently (less time on my hands) and also won’t rec any smut since that’s not really my thing, but I’ll do my best to come up with some stuff!

My friend JJ writes some Klapollo, so I’ll link you to her stuff that I enjoy -- Singderella is a fun fairly short (about 28k) fic about Apollo accidentally winning a singing contest and Klavier falling in love with him twice, it’s really hilarious. She also wrote Vacation All I Ever Wanted recently (111k), which is a vacation fic, evidently; it has excellent characterization and goes into depth about the major relationships, and klapollo is there even though it’s not the main focus of the story (it also focuses on narumitsu and the platonic relationship between Simon & Athena, and his healing out of prison.) Uhh both of those have spoilers up to DD. 

Another fic I read recently is Things Are As They Are (34.5k), though this is kind of an odd thing to recommend since it’s kind of a spin off from You Ever Been In Love? which is a narumitsu fic I really enjoyed, but honestly I think you can read it as a standalone if you wanted to? Just the context for how they ended up there is lost, but the rest should be understandable on its own, and it’s entirely klapollo focused. Again spoilers up to DD.

Ah and I knew I was forgetting something so I checked the recent tags: Alternative Dispute Resolution (19k) is also a good one -- I guess klapollo isn’t the strict focus so much as Klavier working out his issues with Phoenix, but it’s in there for sure. Pretty sure this is just AA4 stuff.

I guess a decent place to start with finding anything really is just going into the tag and sorting by kudos or bookmarks (I find sorting by bookmarks tends to line up better with my tastes personally, like it shoots one of my favourite fics up like 12 places on the front page) and it sort of sorts out what other people really like and what’s popular/well-regarded. It’s not like a flawless method of course but I don’t think it’s a bad place to start! The top solely Klapollo-focused fic as rated by people on ao3 is Hot for Justice (43k) which I know I read at some point but I think that was a couple of years ago, so I can’t really get into the specifics of the plot, but judging by the tags there’s probably at least some DD stuff in it. That’s probably a good place to start for Klapollo stuff, though?

Actual journalists are covering the story. It would have been impossible to avoid hearing about it. Technically, Oli is the one who tells Louis about it, but it’s not exactly being covered up. Harry doesn’t answer Louis’ text asking if he’s alright, but that’s not really surprising. They haven’t spoken for months, and it’s been a lot longer than that since they’ve had a real conversation. The sting of the text going unanswered is still there, less painful than it might have been a few years ago.

It’s not that it’s easy to forget about, exactly. Louis has a whole life outside of One Direction now, though. So Louis goes on with his life, figuring that if Harry was seriously hurt he would have heard about it by now. He might currently be in the same country as Harry, but being on opposite sides of it puts enough distance between them that putting it in the back of his mind is easy. There’s nothing Louis could do, even if he thought Harry might want him to.

That’s why everything that happens next comes as a complete shock to him.

Built, tall, tan and muscular, his skin glistened with sweat after a long day of working outdoors with his hands. The shorts he had on had clearly been full length jeans at one point, and were now just crudely cut off above the knee. His white socks were pulled up too high on his calves, and the brown work boots he had on were old as fuck, the leather peeling along the edges of the soles. Curly brown hair stuck out from the edges of his backwards snapback, and there was a smudge of grease wiped along his brow bone. The smattering of hair along his jaw proved that he hadn’t shaved in a week or two, the hair growing in thicker across his upper lip and around his chin. His sinfully bowed mouth was pink and plump, and Louis was suddenly hyper-focused on the way that he chewed at the toothpick stuck between his lips. He looked like he needed a shower. Louis wanted to lick him.

He watches as his uncle comes out of the house, sliding the patio door shut behind him and quickly making his way over to his omega. The omega looks up at him when he wraps an arm around his waist. Omg why are you losing so many followers youve been drawing gay shit for forever??? (Or maybe i as a gay was just interpreting it that way)

Because I literally spammed people every day for one week lmao. And also, a lot of people follow others for specific content. The moment I stop drawing that exact thing they followed me for, they unfollow me. There are also accounts that follow just to make you follow them & if you don’t, they unfollow you after a while. There’s people who followed me for haikyuu & weren’t interested in BC content, and there were people who followed me for BC content but got showered in gay art instead and that was not their cuppa tea. 

But mostly, i start appearing on people’s feed the more I post. So having me post incessantly for one week made me show up on feeds that I hadn’t shown up for  a good while, so there were probably people who forgot they had followed me in the first place & me posting was a reminder to unfollow.

Truthfully, follower counts are dumb. Yes, it is important for you to have a high follower count for you to get attention, but the amount of people actually following you if you don’t have a consistent art style & rarely ever post something with different vibes than your usual ones, is equal or less than 1% of your total amount of following.

My instagram tells me I have 43k. I do not have 43k people following me. I’ve had 43k that once saw my account & pressed the follow button, but their feeds are filled up with other people’s accs that interest them more than mine (as well as my own feed does not show all the content of the 200+ something people I follow, unless I scroll down till the depths of hell to find every single post on that day and then do so on the next day as well).

Essentially, 95% of your followers are there because of content. They want to see what entertains them. Most of them don’t care about the artist and don’t interact with them at all. Many of them are scared to, given the high follower count. Social media & big accounts make people forget that there are other, real, living & breathing people that are behind them all.

So, to many, I was just a random artist they found and “lol”ed at one of my comics & pressed follow without thinking about it. Most of them don’t go to my account and see all other art I’ve posted to see if they actually like what I do, or me as a person and as an artist at all.

People who don’t know this get really discouraged when they don’t earn a lot of followers, or when they lose a lot (like I did). And some people think you gotta have hundreds of thousands to be famous. I’ve seen accs going around that paid for ads, that had over 150k followers and less than 1k likes on their posts.

Truly famous, loved, growing and/or steady accounts have an amount of likes per post proportional to their follower count. For example, if someone has 150k followers, most of their posts will vary from 20k to 100k likes.

When I was growing my account because I hopped in the fandom bandwagon and stupid little me didn’t know that would only make me crash later, I had like 20~30k and some of my posts reached more than 20k likes (because people liked my stupid comics). Nowadays, I’m not part of the fandom that made me grow anymore. I’m part of a very underrated one (Black Clover), as well a I am drawing a very underrated ship (LuGna) that above all else is getting hated on. I have everything against me in this, so it’s no wonder I lost so many followers.

They didn’t wanna see gay art. They didn’t wanna see Black Clover. They didn’t even know what the fuck was going on. Not everyone paid attention or kept up with my warnings. Despite me explaining multiple times in multiple posts what the Thunder Flames project was about, a lot of people still didn’t know what I was doing that for.

The thing about being a big follower count is that, unless you’re actually loved for what you do (and to do that, once again, I need to emphasize that you need to keep a steady rhythm, a steady vibe, a steady you. Because people follow you for your first impression on them, and you gotta keep up to that first impression if you wanna keep your followers.

I’m unsteady. One look at my gallery and you’ll see how disorganized everything is. Oh, lookit, a 1 min speedpaint of a random drawing I did on an old piece of paper! And right on the left there’s a stupid random comic I did–on the right there’s this super detailed, shaded drawing I’ve done that actually looks terrible to me and I will 100% archive it later, and then there’s B&W mixed with gray shaded, flat colored and fully shaded characters of different fandoms + OCs from commissions and whatever else. 

The thing is, I made my follower count based on a fandom, and now that I’m not there most of that follower count does not have me on their feed. And most of them do not want me on their feed. Now, I’m trying to build a follower count for who I am as an artist, because the few people who have actually stayed and followed me throughout the years know how inconsistent I am in terms of art style, fandoms and everything else.

A solution to this would me either keep creating/posting the same thing all over again (just in different patterns), or creating original content (which I do plan on doing at some point). But for now? Since my follower count does absolutely not reflect on how many people actually like me and/or my art, I’m going to be as chaotic as fucking ever and do whatever the fuck I want.

So yes, I do find it comical that I lost 1k followers over this and am not fazed in the very least, especially because I literally foreshadowed losing 1k and hit the fucking jackpot.

The only reason I’m talking about this at all is because 1- it’s impossible not to notice my follower count decreasing, especially because every new 1k I thank people publicly through stories; 2- some people were actually worried I was upset over it and I have to 3- show that I am not, while simultaneously trying to show people that just because you’re losing followers doesn’t mean you have to stop doing what you want to create content to please people. It doesn’t mean you should be upset, and it doesn’t mean that what you’re doing is bad or wrong.

It means you’re fucking renewing your followers & you’ll now grow for what you’re trying to grow for, bitch. That’s what it’s all about.

Obviously, people do take a great risk doing this. I am taking a great risk doing this. I could’ve lost 5k, I could’ve lost 10k. But I only lost 1k! And that’s because I believe in the project I worked on; I knew there were people out there who enjoyed what I was doing and it’s on them that I was focused on. On the people who supported me AND my art, not just that one single funny comic post I did 3 years ago.

This answer is 100% a lot longer than what you could’ve possibly expected for and I am typing this while being awake for more than 24h so I’m sure that I’ve repeated myself a lot and that there are a lotta typos or w/e and I apologize for that!! But I’m too lazy to go back to read everything over & turn this into a neat post & I’m pretty sure I could answer your question in the first paragraph.

Oh and also. Yes. Yes I have been drawing gay shit ever since I’ve become an artist because I’m so fucking pissed at the lack of canon gay content in a way that it’s depicted as a normal fucking romantic couple instead of having eeeeeeeeveryone point their finger to the gay couple and scream “HEY THAT’S GAY!!! Ever since I was an artist I’ve been rooting for gay ships in shonen manga while knowing they would never happen just because they were gay, and now that we are in our Blessed-By-Satan, Pandemic-Chaotic, What-The-Fuck-Is-Going-On, We-Don’t-Know-If-We-Wanna-Go-Back-Or-To-The-Future-Or-Just-IDK-Fucking-Die year 2020, in which the LGBT community is thriving and being louder than ever to fight for our rights, Me, in my twenty four years of fucking age, having gone through several fucking disappointments ONLY regarding this matter, am sitting here on my ass, hopeful as all galactic, glittery shit that for some fucking reason, my new OTP formed by very underrated characters from this very underrated franchise in the southern and western communities, becomes canon because my stupid eyes can see chemistry between them even though those stupid haters’ can’t. In Repair by autoschediastic, 33k, Explicit. "Shit," Frank mutters, and shoves both hands through his hair. He looks around the kitchen like he's gonna find what he should do scratched into the old linoleum, then looks back at the bot. He gnaws on his lip. Fuck it. He already knows what he's gonna do. He's just gotta do it. Getting down on his knees, he braces a hand on the edge of the crate and leans over the bot. It's dressed in a plain white tee and matching drawstring pants like an escaped mental patient. Frank rolls his neck and cracks his knuckles, shaking the ache out of them before carefully laying his palm against its cheek. He's pretty sure his voice is steady when he says, "Activate." Nothing happens. Fucking shitty packaging-- the thing's busted. But Frank keeps his hand where it is, jumping a little when he feels the surge of energy beneath it. The robot's skin goes from room temperature to lukewarm, then warm. Frank watches it open its eyes, the light behind them adjusting until they're a pale sort of brown. It looks at him and asks, "Am I dead?"

Get Naked (I Got a Plan) by autoschediastic, 11k, Explicit. Frank slides his hand all the way up to where Gerard's arm and tentacles fuse at his armpit. The difference between the feel of one beneath his palm and the other is literally the stuff his dreams are made of. His wet dreams.

A State Of Orange by gala_apples, Frank/Mikey, Frank/Gerard, 20k, Explicit. Being a halfling in a red state can sometimes cause issues for Frank Iero. He’s the weakest at Jett Clement High School, and probably the entire state (not counting the meal plans). His moods are oddly stable, as much as he tries to be mercurial. And being able to withstand the sun for up to twenty minutes only allows him more time to be forced into chores. Still, his parents are insane if they think he’s going to be happy about their decision. Frank doesn’t want to move to a Mixed state. How is he supposed to get great friends? How is he supposed to find great food? How is he supposed to have great sex? But Frank doesn’t have a choice. He’s New Jersey bound for the next year, if not longer. He’ll be surrounded by tame vampires who have been nagged out of a sex drive, and humans he’s not allowed to eat. Mixed states suck. Lucky for him, not every person in Jersey sucks.

The Truth Is I'm On My Way by samanthahirr, 6k, Teen And Up Audiences. Frank's been drawing on himself since elementary school, up under his sleeves and pant legs where his teachers and classmates won't see; he knows how to color inside the lines. He doesn't need Gerard to do it for him. (A high school AU.)

His mom has given up arguing about the amount of time he spends in Gerard's basement, and he doesn't actually care if people think it's weird that he and Gerard hold hands in the hallways and go to the bathroom together. The only thing Frank cares about is figuring out why Gerard's suddenly avoiding him -- because what's the point of losing your virginity on Prom Night if you can't tell your best friend about it in the morning?

In his senior year, though, this stupid gay freshman disproves Fordhaven's straightness, and throws Gerard's entire world off-kilter. Now, in between drawing, avoiding bullies, running an incredibly serious tabletop RP game, failing out of math, and hanging out with friends, Gerard is also busy kind of falling for this asshole who's way too young for him. It's not what he planned on, but it's what's happening. In conclusion: high school sucks.

Frank also deals with bullies which makes it hard for him to hold onto friends, but things start to become better after he befriends the antisocial kid Mikey, and realizes that Watchman might just go to his school. Watchman might also know a little more about Frank than he’s letting on.

☾  Kaleidoscope , by Vendelin :  Derek didn’t look at all like Stiles expected. After all, he deliberately chose a school where being a nerd was cool, so he certainly wasn’t expecting his hotter-than-a-thousand-stars roomie to be an actual cool person. Derek has muscles, like everywhere, which he has a tendency to display in skin-tight, sleeveless t-shirts for bands Stiles has never heard of; his jeans are always tight and ripped too, and he has an impressive five-o’clock shadow, the tips of his jet-black hair dyed purple. And his eyes. Stiles is pretty sure he’s only seen eyes like that in comics, or on a movie screen, or in his freakin dreams. They’re somehow simultaneously all of the colors and none of them, transcending something so pedestrian and insignificant as words to encapsulate their beauty. Stiles would come to learn that he's also wickedly smart, and he plays the guitar and speaks multiple languages, and his sunshine smile is even more alarming that his resting murder face.  (7k, E)

Stiles just wants to sleep and stop being haunted by the faces of his night-time tormentors. His dad thinks he's suffering from post-traumatic stress, Scott thinks he's suffering the after-effects of the ritual; Stiles thinks they're both reasonable theories, except for the part where Derek Hale is the only thing that can take his nightmares away and it seems that fact is no coincidence.   (82k, E)

DGI Adventure 06-29-17 - Experiment: The Lazy Portfolio

A few months ago, my wife and I were hanging out with our friend, let’s call her Martha, and the topic of finance came up as it usually does by my wife making fun of me. But Martha wanted to talk about it a bit, especially how to invest her savings. Like a lot of folks, she “just doesn’t know about that stuff”, but recognizes that it’s important.

After some discussion, I laid out the usual suggestions I make in these sort of situations:

You have three choices:

Hire a dude to be your financial advisor. This is expensive, but you don’t have to learn or do anything.

Hire a robot to be your financial advisor. This is not as expensive as the dude. You will still probably need to learn some things, but you won’t have to do anything.

Or do it yourself. This is the cheapest option, but you will need to learn and do some things yourself.

Now Martha is pretty smart, and she’s also pretty frugal, so she was most interested in options 2 and 3, but in either case I was telling her that she should invest a little time into learning about “financial stuff” which she finds daunting. So she wanted to know how much time exactly?

Now, some folks might quibble with me here. This is where my bias against robo advisors or any type of advisor for that matter probably shows, but I firmly believe that if a robot is going to make your investing decisions, you really owe it to yourself to at least learn the basics. It’s your freaking money after all. You should have a minimal understanding of what the robot is up to. (I think this is true if you hire a dude too, but I digress).

Anyway, the logic progresses that if you’re going spend the time to learn the basics, why not just do it yourself?

This surprised Martha. She didn’t really think that you could “do it yourself” with only a minimal amount of knowledge or time invested.

Then I said something like, “Oh sure...you could manage your own finances and put all your extra wealth into like 4 index ETFs and rebalance annually. It would be a perfectly reasonable investment approach that would probably be as good or better than the dude or the robot, and it would require less than a couple hours of initial “education”, and like 30 minutes a year to do the rebalancing.”  

“Really?” Martha asked. “Will you share that list of 4 ETFs with me?”

“Sure.”

I haven’t made good on that promise, until now. So this post is kind of for Martha.

But it’s also for the Wizard Family.

I’m turning the Traditional IRA (account #2 on the portfolio page) into our “Lazy Portfolio Experiment”.

This portfolio represents what literally anyone could do with nearly zero thought or effort regardless of their level of financial sophistication. The only difference is that I will be rebalancing quarterly instead of annually. That would probably be too often for most retail brokerages because the fees will eat you alive, but this account is with Interactive Brokers, so the fees are a lot less and you kind of have to be more active to get your money’s worth. I think it’s a reasonable compromise. It’s still cheaper than the robot.

I’m doing this for two reasons:

I think it will be a fun experiment to see how this completely hands-off, passive approach works compared to the other accounts that I’m actively managing and

I’m a buy and hold agnostic. I believe that stocks can be under- or overvalued, so to some extent I’m going to spend a lot of my resources chasing that alpha. But I’m far from convinced that I’ll be especially good at that, so there is also a pretty good amount of our wet wealth that is put into passive investing vehicles and this is part of that.

So what’s the portfolio?

Full disclosure...it’s not like I came up with this myself. In the spirit of being completely lazy, I google searched “4 ETF portfolio” and found this at the Bogleheads wiki site.

It’s not rocket science. What should I invest in? Stocks, bonds and real estate.

Now granted this skews a little heavy towards US based assets. The only international exposure is in stocks. But given the fact that the rule of law and private ownership are pillars of our society, it’s not a bad idea to stick to America when investing in debt and real estate. You can get into some weird shit out there in countries where the government might just take your land or force a company into bankruptcy or whatever. I think there should be some global exposure, but it’s best limited to equities where the rules are a little more sophisticated (and modeled after ours).

Plus it’s where both Martha and I live. Go ‘Murica!

Now the allocation percentages are a matter of personal preference and situation. That’s where the time spent on self-education comes in. One might want a higher or lower allocation of one asset class over another. This asset allocation is what I came up with based on my preferences and personal situation. That bogleheads site is a good starting point. Reading that, and clicking around to flesh out some basic concepts shouldn’t take too long.

It’s probably important right now that I reiterate my disclaimer.

No one should make investment decisions based on what a whackadoodle writes on the internet.

So let’s be absolutely clear that NONE OF THIS IS INVESTMENT ADVICE!

But it is my opinion that this would be a perfectly reasonable way for one to invest one’s money without putting a lot of thought and effort into the process. In 20 years, this portfolio will probably be a lot better off than if the money were just in a savings account or the sock drawer or something.

In fact I think it’s so reasonable, this is how I’m investing $43K of my family's money.

$43,238.59 to be exact (account value at market close yesterday).

We’ll see what happens.

But predictably, Harry only comes to this epiphany when Louis starts seeing someone else. And this is not a John Hughes movie as far as Harry is aware. Everyone else is pretty sure, though. Featuring a heavy dose of pining, copious amounts of alcohol, drunk dialing that results in a situation reminiscent of Rachel Green's, a ginger cat that likes to interrupt intimate moments, and a Halloween party that changes everything.
