The first time it happens, Wilhelm goes through the day with the exact same motions. He’s woken up to Simon gently singing him happy birthday, they go to the Palace, celebrate his birthday, August is there and then he isn’t, they eat with his parents and he yells at them. His mother dissolves into tears. Simon breaks up with him.

The same happens the second time. And the third.

By the fourth cycle, as his eyes blink open to light fighting its way in through his curtains and he hears Simon’s voice, warm and tender, singing in Spanish, Wilhelm is certain he’s losing his mind.
