Intrigue: A Canute and Thorfinn Character Study
Canute had learned to do one thing above all else- discern men. It was simple. Either he should be wary of a man or not, and of those he was wary of, who should he make face with.
But then there was Thorfinn..
Very mild Thornute | Vulgar Language | Canon Compliant (Volume 3 specifically) | Spoiler Free
Brushing off my Tumblr to post this somewhere, best read on mobile.
-
Canute often found himself studying Thorfinn. In fact he was now, stealing glances of him while riding in a wagon through Wales. His nerves were getting the best of him and not wanting to think of signing a treaty without his father present, Canute instead tried to place Thorfinn to keep his mind occupied. The Prince found him to be a most intriguing character, and one that often eluded any solid characterization. It was egregiously annoying; for you see, growing up in the bloodbath of regal politics, Canute had learned to do one thing above all else- discern men. It was simple. Either he should be wary of a man or not, and of those he was wary of, who should he make face with. Granted, Canute had Ragnar, and therefore he never had to put this skill to a real test for his vassal always fought on his behalf, keeping the young Princeâs best interests in mind. Nevertheless, his cautious observation skills were more often than not proven correct as the time revealed untrustworthy men to Canute.
But then there was Thorfinn. There are always exceptions to any and every rule, but even that logic still couldnât stick Thorfinn under a neat label inside the Princeâs mind. The boy was not like the men he traveled with. Yes, he did the dirty killing, but he did it in a way that oozed indifference. Thorfinn killed swiftly and acted as if each man was a simple stepping stone to the fight being over, for the killing to be over. While the others he traveled with had a sick enjoyment for the act. Thorfinn did not socialize with the Askeladdâs band. He did not share in their spoils, including that of food and drink. Instead the blond hunted his own food, collected his own water. Only rarely did he ever get what he needed from what was plundered. Those rare instances were either when it was offered to him while marching, or on late and loud evenings, while the rest of Askeladdâs band made themselves merry, Thorfinn would slip some goods from tables abandoned for the night.
So, no, Canute would not label him as part of the band. This conclusion was frustrating, for if Thorfinn was not one of Askeladdâs men, why was he one of Askeladdâs most trusted pawns? Perhaps part of the answer was in the word âpawnâ itself, but Askeladd was a cautious man as well. So much so that Canute knew it would bode well for him to try and keep tabs on what the man was thinking. So what was his reasoning to keep Thorfinn- who literally wanted him dead for some unknown reason to the Prince- under his thumb. The young blond was skilled and dangerous to have around. How did Askeladd tame-
Ah.. perhaps that was it.
Thorfinn was like something wild, pacing in its cage and waiting for its chance to do something about its keeper and free itself from its confines. Tamed to compliance, but would still happily bite the hand. Something akin to a wolf perhaps.
Canute looked up from his thoughts over to Thorfinn who was leaning on the opposite side of the wagon, his gaze far off and his eyes hard. Feeling that the Prince was looking at him Thorfinn shot daggers at Canute . Seeing the dirty teen do this with the image of a wolf in his mind nearly tempted Canute to chuckle and he swiftly hid his face from the other in case the temptation won him over. He could hear Thorfinn scoff and that was the end of the whole exchange. A lone wolf in an unfamiliar pack. The young Prince was satisfied with the description for the young warrior.
Canute was no longer satisfied. Thorfinn was his guard and, surprisingly, was taking the job seriously. He seemed not to care, was quick with sharp words at either Canute, Ragnar or Father Willibald. But on more than one occasion, the Prince would catch a small glimpse of Thorfinn nearby, seemingly disinterested, but close enough to come to aid or rescue. Any time he was not lurking and couldnât be seen or found, a few hours or less after the fact, the shorter blond could be seen emerging from the tree line, a rabbit or more hanging over his shoulder.
In fact, this had just happened and Ragnar had convinced Thorfinn to add the rabbit to the meal he and the Prince were making.
âHighness!â Ragnar had announced upon entry. âWe have beans, cabbage and a hare!â As he listed the items, Thorfinn had walked in behind him and closed the door to the cold. Canute was surprised to see him, tensed and annoyed, looking very out of place in the little home they had⌠procured.
â A hare?â The Prince asked, ignoring how his own bout of tension was threatening to rise in his shoulders.
âThorfinn caught it.â Obviously. âWeâll put it in the soup.â
âWell done.â As if Thorfinn needed or wanted praise for a deed he probably found to be childâs play. âBleed it and skin it so we can wash the meat.â Truth be told, Canute wasnât expecting for Thorfinn to just comply without some remark, and he surely wasnât expecting Ragnar to take the rabbit from Thorfinn to do the task instead. It was jarring seeing his caretaker grab the rabbit from him, as if he had just seen Ragnar take a kill from a wild animal. At least thatâs what flashed through his mind when the moment started. However, as it happened in real time, Thorfinn let his catch be taken and he was left to simply stand, awkward and unsure.
Canute, stirring the broth in progress mindlessly as he watched on, couldnât help but consider Thorfinn for a long moment. This boy in front of him was no lone and wild wolf. The moment his gaze was felt, however, the creature came back and Thorfinn found a spot off to the side against the wall that he could sit at and brood.
Once the soup was done and the table was set, Canute and Ragnar somehow coaxed Thorfinn to join them at the table. The tension in the boyâs shoulders was palpable and Canute couldnât help but take notice of it, trying to further categorize it. When Thorfinn actually acknowledged the meal in front of him, however, his demeanor changed. It was quick, merely a fraction of a second, but the Prince saw it- tried to burn the image into his brain to try and decipher later.
Ragnarâs compliments of the meal they prepared took Canuteâs attention and he took this as an opportunity. Agreeing with Ragnar, âThe rabbit made it work.â He looked to Thorfinn, âIâm tired of salted meat. You have my thanks.â There was no answer from the shorter blond, he just continued to look at their spread on the table and look lost. Almost as if he didnât think it was real. The thought threatened to furrow the Princeâs brow. It made him realize yet again, Thorfinn was not amicable with the men he traveled with. When was the last time anyone showed this young man any kindness? When was the last time Thorfinn had the simple pleasure to share a meal with someone at all?
âWhatâs wrong?â Canute spoke, aiming to pull Thorfinn out of his stupor. âEat up, you caught the rabbit.â
It seemed to do the trick, for Thorfinn picked up his bowl and spoon and tentatively took a bite. The look on his face, before it was hidden behind matted bangs, was one Canute would very much like to see again. Anger and/or indifference seemed to have a constant monopoly on Thorfinnâs features, but that one, quick moment of.. surprise? Or maybe he was just pleased with the taste of his meal. Either way, the emotion fit his face better, let the ridges between his brows smooth out for a second. Genuine, that was the word. Thorfinn seemed more genuine in that one instant than he did the entirety of the time that Canute had known him thus far.
âPretty good isnât it?â Ragnar mused, though the Prince couldnât quite tell if he had also caught the glimpse of surprise from Thorfinn, or if he was just rearing up to dote and brag on Canuteâs cooking talents. âCatch us a deer next, and weâll really have a meal!â
â...â Not a real reply, but the young guard had acknowledged Ragnar. Thorfinn continued to eat, and almost absentmindedly, âI thought you noble types had everything cooked for you.â It wasnât a question, a simple statement of thought, but Canute thought he would answer it anyways.
âI enjoy doing it.â The Prince began, âI donât normally get the chance. Only Ragnar knows that I can cook.â A pause and Canute laid his spoon down in his bowl for a moment. âDo not tell anyone of this.â Thorfinns reply was instant and disinterested.
âWhy not?â Followed by, âWho cares?â
Not sure what persuaded him to do so, but Canute began to tell Thorfinn of his fatherâs, the King, displeasure in the fact that he liked to cook- that it was a frivolous and useless skill to have. Though the shorter blondâs face was as neutral as ever, he did slow in his eating to listen, that alone made Canute feel as he wasnât wasting his breath, that it was worth having someone other than Ragnar know of how intensely inadequate his father found him to be. Ragnar seemed to be confused at his tellings though. He was obviously not expecting his Highness to share. Giving his Highness an odd look he decided to try and lighten the Princeâs mood, though Canute wasnât in need of it.
The two of them held their own conversation from there on out, speaking about different dishes Canute could prepare, or what Ragnar could teach him about new dishes he had yet to prepare. The mood in their little borrowed house was light. It was familial in its own way. The young Prince would glance over to Thorfinn every once in a while and was pleased to see that the ever present knot of tension in his shoulders was slowly becoming unraveled. The guard ate and listened.
Something in Thorfinn snapped and Canute shuddered because of it.
What happened in the next instant was too fast for Canute to follow in real time. Thorfinn had gotten up, more like sprung up, and was immediately at the door one of his signature knives pointed at someoneâs throat. Had the man had worse reflexes, he would have impaled himself on Thorfinnâs steel. Ragnar was next in the initiative, questioning both Thorfinn and the man on what was going on.
âAgh- Iâm on your side Thorfinn!â So it was one of Askeladdâs men. âIâm just bringing a messageâŚâ Despite this, it still took a long moment for Thorfinn to remove his knife from the manâs throat. Ragnar took the lead from there and was questioning the newcomer on Canuteâs behalf, but Canute himself was still trained on his short bodyguard.
Thorfinn was still tense, still alert and ready to strike, but his initial instinct was slowly recoiling back into its original state. It was interesting to watch the slow movement of his shoulders and back muscles through threadbare clothing. However, Canuteâs gaze was felt and Thorfinn shot him a look that could kill. Oddly enough the look from the dirtied blond softened a little, as if he was reminded that Canute was still there and his presence wasnât something he should be afraid of. The thought struck the Prince as oddly satisfying. He wasnât able to really dive further into that train of thought, however, for the man brought news of the English advancing on the hideout they had procured. Canuteâs shock couldnât beat out Ragnarâs rage. Heated words about Askeladd and his poor decisions were spoken, and then, just as suddenly as they had come, the man was gone, Ragnar following after him.
The little house was now too still and too quiet until it was broken by Thorfinn huffing through his nose.
âCanât even manage to close the damn door on their way out.â He muttered, moving to do just that so the winterâs day wouldnât try and suck any more of the hard earned heat out of the house. With the door closed Thorfinn relocated to his new post beside the door, leaning against the wall. The Prince watched him do this and suddenly Thorfinn was glaring at him again. âHave I fucking done something?â The shorter teen hissed.
âWhat?â Such an elegant reply, good job Canute. Not that Thorfinn gave two shits about that kind of thing.
âYouâve been staring. Like a lot.â Thorfinn turned to fully face Canute, leaning only one shoulder on the wall. âStill mad, Princess?â A smirk. Of course thatâs what he would call him, but Canute realized he was talking about their squabble in the wagons the other day. âI donât give a ratâs ass who your father is or whoâs womb you crawled out of.â
âStill have the vulgar audacity to speak to me like that, but no.â Thorfinn raised a brow at him. âIt was more of a shock than anything else. I donât particularly mind that you speak so blatantly.â No matter how sharp the words, unfortunately. It seemed that the shorter blond did not have a reply for that and instead just refocused his attention to the fire instead. Canute also took this moment to recollect his thoughts. He knew Ragnar was angry, he warned Askeladd about the very problem at hand. Askeladd had paid him no mind at all. Still, the Prince was worried. Ragnar had left in the heat of the moment to a battlefield only to argue with the man leading the defensive charge. Not to mention, his soup would be cold by the time he came back. What a waste.
Perhaps the moments before Ragnarâs return wouldnât entirely be a waste, though. Not if Canute played his cards right. He wanted to understand Thorfinn. Never before had he met someone that has proven themselves to be so complicated, especially since at first Canute thought him to be a simple brute among other simple brutes. Why was Thorfinn here, why was he in, but yet not considered, part of Askeladdâs band? What happened to him? The short blond hates the man, yet follows him around the country and overseas. He even follows some insane orders with the promise of some kind of reward.
Thorfinn let out an aggravated noise and was suddenly leaning over Canute, hands flat on the table with a bang.
âYouâre doing it again. Quit.â The shorter teen growled. Canute blinked owlishly at him. What? Oh, had he been staring again? Nevertheless he continued to study Thorfinn, which was quickly making his guardâs blood boil. Then Canute stood forcing the other teen to stand back a bit and look up at him. He knew that Thorfinn was shorter than him, but it was still amusing to actually see it. Thorfinn carried himself to be larger, more intimidating. Said young guard was now glaring up at Canute through his dirtied bangs. âWhat?â He hissed.
âYou confuse me, Thorfinn.â The Prince replied. Thorfinn also had a fair amount of confusion mixed in with his usual anger, and that fact pleased Canute a bit- at least the feeling was mutual. âIâve just been trying to figure you out.â
âWell stop.â
âNo, I shanâtâ Canute replied swiftly. Thorfinn was prone to argue, but nothing came out. The Prince could take a guess as to what he was thinking. That the person in front of him was the same as the shy and bumbling Prince that was showcased and dragged around all of England these past few weeks? Yes and no. There was nothing political in this task, Canute had nothing to fear if he took a misstep. No repercussions. This was a purely selfish motive in which he had no problems pursuing as long as it was kept private. âAlso itâs not that I can not, itâs that I will notâ
âYouâŚâ Thorfinn struggled. âThat doesnât make any sense.â
âTo you, perhaps not.â This reply really made Thorfinn angry, Canute could see it in the way his whole body tensed, gearing up to fight. Part of him wanted to see if his guard would actually hit him. However, before either of them could think through what they wanted to do next, for some odd reason, Canute had moved and held Thorfinnâs face in his hands. Both teens were now wide eyed and tense. Why did he do that? When did he do that? Just now? A moment ago?
Canute was the first to settle down from the shock of his own actions, and instead of pulling away like he thought he would, the Prince settled into the position. He let his hands feel the warmth of Thorfinnâs jaw and slid down to where his thumbs were still on the other blondâs face, but the rest of his fingers curled delicately around his neck. He knew his hands must have been cold, he was prone to be, but the proof lies in the fact that Thorfinnâs skin puckered into bumps right before he shuddered just slightly.
âWhat the hell do you think youâre doing?â Thorfinn asked, his voice surprisingly tame. He was definitely still angry and on edge, but thus far it seemed as if Canute was not in danger of being bitten by the wolf that accompanied Thorfinnâs anger.
âIndulging, just let me for a moment.â Canute replied softly, as if trying not to spook Thorfinn away.
â...the hell does that even mean?â The guard muttered in reply. Canute laughed lightly, amused.
âDonât think on it too hard,Thorfinn.â No reply to that, but the dirtied teen in his hands didnât pull away either. Good, that was good.
Now that Canute had somehow managed to get them into this situation, he took as much time as he damn well pleased to study the other boy. Not that he was naive enough to believe that staring at Thorfinn would somehow unlock his secrets, but he did think it would help. Thorfinn was a recluse. No one ever got too close to him and he would never let them, so the fact that Canute was quite literally in his personal space seemed like a major victory.
Thorfinn had hard light brown eyes, but if the fire flickered right they were more like unearthed amber or sweet honey. They were nothing like the Princeâs own eyes, a sky blue. The sky may be vast, but Thorfinnâs eyes were deep. What was that saying? The eyes were a window into the soul? Canute could readily believe that looking into Thorfinnâs.
Next Canute took note that, under all the dirt, Thorfinn was tired. He had coloration and lines on his skin that a boy of their age shouldnât have. Did he ever sleep through the night? His guard was always up late and always up early, always seen at odd hours thinking about something far away... or a time long gone, perhaps? Beyond what dirt and sleepless bruising lay on his skin, was what lacked beneath it. Thorfinn was a genuine threat on the battlefield, how could someone so strong have such gaunt in his cheeks? He knew Thorfinn fended for himself, but from what he has seen, he does a rather good job at it. Granted, he doesnât eat square meals. Canute thinks that just earlier was the first time heâs seen Thorfinn eat anything green, or not meat related. Still, a soldier's diet of salted meat and wine wouldnât result in malnutrition. Was malnutrition why he was short? Just⌠Just how long had Thorfinn been taking care of himself? The men didnât bat an eye at Thorfinnâs presence. In fact, while marching and the men told old stories, Thorfinn was in a good many of them. Years? Had it been years since Thorfinn had a meal like the one he had today?
âI donât need your fucking pity.â Thorfinnâs voice startled the Prince. Was he making a face of some kind?
âI didnât mean..â
âSave your breath, I donât care.â
Canute thought it was best to not reply, so instead he wiped some dirt off of Thorfinnâs face with one of his thumbs. With a fresh bath, a sturdy brush, and some new clothes, Thorfinn could be considered handsome.
He wondered what Thorfinn was thinking. Was he actually trying to decipher Canute in turn or was he just waiting for the Prince to be done? Canute also wondered, truly, when was the last time Thorfinn was shown kindness? Affection? Perhaps he wasnât a lone wolf at all, but something lost instead. When one finds themselves abandoned in one way or another, in an unfamiliar place, one must adapt. Did Thorfinn just adapt to killing? Fights because he has to? It was frustrating going through all these thoughts himself, but Canute knew for a fact that Thorfinn would not simply answer any questions that he asked.
Perhaps⌠Perhaps Canute could be the one to show him kindness? Maybe he could properly tame the wolf that was Thorfinnâs anger, and find the lost person it was protecting. Thorfinn was so hard to get close to though, even today he had been reluctant to simply share his rabbit and then a meal. So what could the Prince do? He thought of this and that, feeling Thorfinnâs pulse through the fingers on his neck. Absentmindedly he rubbed his thumbs in time with it, studying him. Again Thorfinn couldnât suppress a shiver and again Canute was moving without thinking at all.
He had pressed their lips together. Why? Not even God above would know. Thorfinnâs lips were chapped, still and shocked against the Princeâs own, but he was warm. Unfairly warm and it seeped into Canute. He could stay this way for a long while if he was completely honest with himself, but one kiss was enough. A gesture of both kindness and affection that Thorfinn could seek out from him if he chose to do so if he ever needed to feel wanted. So Canute pulled away, but instead of the awkward moment he was expecting, strong hands pulled him back in at the hips. Thorfinn had leaned back up and continued the kiss.
The taller blond was not expecting this, but then again he was also not expecting to have kissed Thorfinn in the first place either. His pale hands slipped from Thorfinnâs face and neck and instead slid so Canute could rest his arms on his guardâs shoulders. The hands on his hips were most likely bruising him with how tight they held him, but that was part of what he liked about this moment. Thorfinn was holding him and kissing him like this was something he desperately needed. Canute returned its ferocity and leaned in, making Thorfinn crane his neck at an odd angle, and then ran his tongue over the shorterâs lips. Again this was something neither of them were expecting, not experienced enough to really know what they were doing at all to be honest.
However, surprisingly enough, Thorfinn had again let it happen, letting Canute test the waters. So he did. Canute pushed his tongue into the other blondâs mouth. He felt Thorfinnâs tongue with his own, the roof of his mouth and back of his teeth. It was oddly exhilarating, even more so when Thorfinn mimicked Canute and did the same to him.
As Thorfinn kissed him Canute moved them, pivoting them so Thorfinn was between him and the table. The shorter blond grunted when it happened and turned his head out of the kiss to look at their new position, to which the taller blond took as a chance to place kisses to Thorfinnâs jaw and neck.
âDonât think that Iâm just going to bend over like some paid whore.â Thorfinn muttered, his voice was a little deeper, thicker, Canute couldnât help but like it, but also couldnât help the laughter that bubbled up from him.
âI wasnât really planning on it.â He mused, resting his head in the crook of Thorfinnâs neck. Canute watched as Thorfinn reached for his low ponytail and played with the strands tentatively. It almost seemed as if he had been wanting to do so for a while but never had gotten the chance to do so until now. Canute kept that nice little thought in mind as he placed more kisses up Thorfinnâs neck, trailing back up to his mouth.
The two of them kissed some more, each exploring at their own paces. Canute also let his hands wander; Thorfinn was all muscle and bone and very thin. The prince knew that one day, if Thorfinnâs disinterest in his own health didnât kill him first, that he would be properly strong, with healthy muscle, and a fuller face. At least thatâs what he hoped for. Thorfinn did not explore the way Canute did, but his grip remained tight and would squeeze him whenever Canute did something he liked. At some point their hands inched a little higher.
The heat between them slowly, so very slowly, faded and they were back where they started, Canute cupping his face. After a few moments that stopped too.
âDid this ever happen?â Thorfinn asked, voice quiet. Canute blinked at him, it wouldnât bode well for him if Thorfinn ever told anyone of their little venture, but he was honestly surprised that the other cared at all. But more than that, Canute was surprised to see that the anger that was seemingly permanent on Thorfinnâs features was gone. In its place was something the Prince could not identify, but he would burn the image in his brain. Hard eyes were gone, in its place was only honey and a fair amount of color in his cheeks.
Canute decided he would be the one to give Thorfinn the kindness he deserved. Even if it was just in small doses, seemingly meaningless gestures.
âNo.â He replied, leaning down to press a kiss to Thorfinnâs cheek. âBut it could happen again if you want.â
The shorter blond huffed and made a gesture for Canute to move. He did and Thorfinn moved towards the door. Canute had expected him to leave, but instead he had taken his previous makeshift post at the door. âWhatever, your Highnessâ
The Prince took his place back at the table, smiling to himself. That response certainly wasnât a no. He had more thinking to do.

Demâs Big Post About The Spn Fics Part 1/2
aka The Wrap Up to celebrate To Exist Again and To Become a Man now being finished!
(This will be a long post. This is your only warning.)
Admittedly this is a bit of a weird thing to be doing, but I wanted to try it out for 3 reasons:Â
I love talking about my own work andÂ
It functions really well as a self-reflective tool for me to improve on, andÂ
I can answer some big questions people might have because there was a LOT of worldbuilding in these stories.Â
Weâll start off with reflective stuff, and move into the juicier world-building focused stuff later into the post. There will be major spoilers for both fics to come!
To begin with a funny anecdote, Why Did I Write These Stories?
I was beginning to write and work out the story that I wanted to write for Spn (what will now be To Destroy a Man. As I was writing the scene, I realized I had a LOT of ideas and while I was trying to avoid as much exposition as I could, it became quickly apparent that I was needing to create my own au (this scene eventually became chapter 34 of To Become a Man). A short prequel seemed like a good idea, to quickly hash out the âpriorâ events that I needed to go through so all the readers could be on the same page. While plotting out prequel points, I realized Sam and Dean were going to have drastically different experiences during the same time period, and I was trying to figure out whoâs pov would be better for which scenes, and how to keep momentum when theyâre going through such radically different types of changes. Ultimately I decided to split their povs, which I also thought would be a fun project! And I naively assumed each pov would take about 2 chapters each, rounding out to maybe 15k total.
I had my ending points: Dean n Cas soul-merged and (basically) married, Cas on the lam from heaven and a complete anomaly, and Sam juiced up full of powers and a weird mix of archangel and antichrist but still 100% human and ready to fight God.Â
Now I needed to add weight to these changes, so I wrote 200k of build-up.
Am I proud of these fics?
OF COURSE I AM!!! These are the longest fics Iâve ever written AND finished AND in the fastest freakin turnaround ever (both were finished writing, barring edits, in like 6 months holy shit)
I didnât write a single scene that I âdidnâtâ want to write. If I had trouble writing it, as in it was fighting me, I scrapped it. Most obviously was the scene in Deanâs pov where he and Sam were intended to meet some other hunters and Dean declines working with them because heâs nervous about being outed as queer. It was meant to be a good scene! I wanted to introduce some new characters! But it just wasnât working so I said âthank you, next!â.Â
But it means this story was an absolute joy to write. Because for a while all I was doing was âif I wanted to write one scene into supernatural, what would I write?â and then just DID that!! Itâs why thereâs a lot of âSalmondean do dumb shit or have really dumb heartfelt conversationsâ scenes.
Would I change anything?
If Iâd been less eager to start sharing, I might have planned out the story beats a little tighter so there were less âsoftâ chapters and a draw/pull for people to come back and keep reading. I felt Deanâs story specifically lagged at points and could have used some tighter editing (there was a noticeable lull in directed movement between Dean n Cas getting together, until Sam corrupts Amy).
I also probably would have held Samâs story until Iâd finished Deanâs so I could make the two line up better! Probably could have inserted more scenes into Samâs fic that way, and made sure things were a little more consistent. In an ideal world one concept I had was to release 1 chapter from each pov every week that would correspond to the same time frame so weâd be getting real-time SalmonDean pov narrative. Unfortunately that didnât work!
The biggest takeaway overall is for me to focus more on what moves the plot, and to make my scenes do more than 1 thing so I can cut down on wordcount and increase my efficiency.Â
Of course every writer will find things they want to fix in anything theyâve ever written, so these are minor âmistakesâ at best. Iâm so dang proud of these fics.Â
Onto more interesting things!
How Did I Put These Fics Together (because itâs different than anything Iâve ever done before)
Normally when I write a story, I plan out the beats I need to hit, see where I need to insert any kind of foreshadowing/buildup, and then write from A to B to C and so on and so forth. Hence, this is why I can normally post things as I complete chapters, because itâs all a linear progression.Â
For these two stories, rather than linear plot/a normal story structure, I just sat and free-wrote any and every scene that came to mind and then pieced them into a kinda-linear form like putting a quilt together. Youâll note that this is why thereâs not a lot of internal callback or a feeling of sense of time flowing within the fic (save for points where I went back and specifically edited it in). How long does the story take place over? Hard to say! Your author has the barest grasp on linear time even on a good day (how many times did I say âsee you on [wrong day]â at the end of chapters lmaaoooo)
This also meant EXTENSIVE editing on the back end once I decided in what order I wanted my âquilt piecesâ to be. Hard to say if this is a bonus or a negative!
But I did want to try and capture the vibe of the lives they lead, as a bit of a âslice of lifeâ-style story, when the slice of life is the profound weirdness of the Winchester roaming life, and how things are status quo- until everyone almost dies oh shit!! And then they have to keep living because no therapy we die/undie like Winchesters. Do I think I captured this effectively? Hmm. Good question.Â
Dem where the FUCK did the inspiration for a lot of the magic and creature weirdness even come from?
Honestly? Music, primarily. And completely mishearing lyrics!
Nightwish âEver Dreamâ: the line is âmy song can but borrow you graceâ and because my brain is scrambled eggs on a good day, I heard âgraceâ âsongâ and âborrowâ in that order and have had, for YEARS, the mental image of Cas borrowing Deanâs soul to power himself up for battle.
From there Iâve always been enamored with the âwavelength of celestial intentâ descriptor that Cas drops in s6 for âwhat he isâ.Â
I also really like ocean metaphors mostly because Iâve been obsessed with the ocean and things in it since I was like⌠5??? So really this was me just rolling with what I know lmao. I love using (somewhat) accurate scientific metaphors for very intangible things!
I was also finishing my degree in biology/ecology while writing these fics and I think it shows
Stars âThe Night Starts Hereâ gives us the series title and the fic titles. Except for âTo Exist Againâ. TEA was almost titled âThe Upwards Fallâ because I wanted all 3 of the Main Stories to have titles from this song, but I couldnât make anything else work in tandem with the series name âThe Love It Takesâ while also working for Samâs personal story. So Sam, as always, is the rebel <3
Stars âUp In Our Bedroom, After The Warâ is basically the vibes of the whole story. TFW has been, literally, to hell and back!!! Thereâs a bit of melancholy and sadness, a lingering dark, but the chance of a bright new tomorrow and a soft start.
Letâs Talk About Themes in The Story! What were you looking to accomplish?Â
My earliest notes for TFW are, as follows:
Deanâs journey of self-discovery (who am I when Iâm not trying to be Dad?)
Dean wants to settle down! He wants a big family! He wants to be domestic!
Basically: Dean doesnât want to have a short life of hunting. He wants to live!
Deanâs journey of realizing heâs bi, and him accepting that
Deanâs relationship to Sam is both older brother/parentÂ
And continuing Dean balancing these roles while also letting Sam be an adultÂ
Deanâs Big Issues/Fears about never being good enough for people to want to stay with him (these are effectively highlighted in that Cas thinks heâs not useful enough to be wanted)
Sub Plot:
Castielâs autonomy
Casâ fall from grace, to trying to restore Heaven, to wrecking it further
Heâs majorly depressed by the end of s7 (before purgatory)
Wants to stay in Purgatory but doesnât tell Dean
Remains depressed after leaving, but resolved to keep living on because heâs clearly meant for something
After the seraphim reveal: does he have free will?! How does he grapple with this? How does he live in a way he can be proud of?
And lastly
Sam gets his powers back CAUSE THATS HOT
where tf did they go????
he got them from Lucifer?????
sleeper agent??????
Sam is The Chosen One
Accepts that he is More Than Human and to celebrate all parts of him
Lucifer and Sam friends?? Work together????
Sam needs autonomy in his choices/his life
If you compare these to the overall arc of TFW within the two stories, I think I got a lot of them! But youâll also note a lot of these things arenât concrete goals that are easily measurable (ex: Dean wants to learn to bake pie. In chapter 1 he starts a fire in the kitchen. By the end of the story he finally makes A Good Pie.) part of the lack of concrete milestones was why I felt it was important to tell Dean (and Casâ) story by going back to the point they meet, in s4! Deanâs gradual change towards his feelings for Cas, his relationship to Sam (heavily influenced by the s7 events of this fic) and then his own relationship with himself were such slow burns that I felt it would be a disservice to try and cram a change like that into a timeline like â1 yearâ.
I felt like these subtle changes and adjustments actually felt a lot truer to life-- people often change in very small, gradual ways over time, even without realizing it and often times not consistently! If only we could all gain skills like the sims, where we can easily level up and remain at that high level of performance!Â
So the Guy Who Ate Satan, A Celestial Nuke that Developed Sentience, and Dean walk into a barâŚ
Samâs story in Spn The Show has always been a âchosen oneâ kind of narrative. Sam is living with one foot in the realm of the monsters, and I wanted to bring that back full force! It really makes sense for him that he should only continue to grow in power, might, and magic!! As the story progresses.
Cas also got a power up! I do desperately love in the show that he was kind of a grunt/nothing angel, and so even when he defected to TFW he was a huge help for them, but in the scale of things he was an annoying fly to most other angels. It really worked for the underdog story of s4/5. In this I wanted to give him a power up, and originally it was actually going to be close contact with Sam that eventually changed Cas into something unknown (you can still see traces of this in ch34 of TBAM, where Death remarks âCastiel could be [Samâs] first creationâ. But for a combo of reasons: how Samâs magic needed to have intent, the entire concept of free will and consent, and how much I wanted Dean and Cas to have their effect on each other, I decided to go with the route that Cas has actually always been something angel-adjacent rather than becoming something new. TFW/Supernatural has always been about free will and making your own story, so I amplified that with Cas.
Dean has always been A Normal Guy, which is part of the appeal of him and Sam (2 normal dudes!) taking on the Very Not Normal. As explained above, Samâs story is ânormal guy finds out heâs the chosen oneâ and so, in a story about very large concepts and huge monsters and acts of magic, I felt it was very important to keep Dean as normal as possible. To the point it became a running gag to me, personally, in that âno matter what cool shit happens around him, Dean has to stay as Just A Guyâ. And itâs a very humanizing role that allows the story to have the scale it does!
What were the most important themes in your story?
Samâs Autonomy
I wasnât even going to include the plot about Luciferâs death in this storyâ that was going to come up in a later story, actually! And rather than Sam having ate Lucifer, the original idea was that theyâd become a SamandLucifer entity (this harkens back to a concept I wanted to write when Swan Song first aired).Â
That storyline would have involved a lot of mental âSam and Lucifer discuss what it means to live, which one of them is more worthy of life and if they do deserve to destroy the world for the pain theyâve been forced to go through, just to create the dichotomy of good and evil for everyone elseâ discussions. There would be a lot of talk about how Sam hates and fears Lucifer for the pain Lucifer put on Sam, how Lucifer hates Sam because he and Sam are the same but Samâs brother loves him anyways, etc.Â
Ultimately that was scrapped because Samâs entire story in the show is always about how the world and everyone around him manipulates him and that he never actually gets to make choices about his own life or body that arenât influenced or part of someone elsesâ design. And that always bothered me that Sam was never allowed to be himself without having to be ashamed of it, and I wanted to make sure that Samâs triumph of being proud of himself/proudly choosing to exist (again) was evident in his story
In the end I needed Sam to have this visceral win over his tormentor. As the story shows, in this case Lucifer was abused and put into a position where he was incapable of empathy and could only express himself in violence. Sam even understands this! But it doesnât change the fact that Lucifer tortured Sam in unimaginable ways for thousands of years.Â
With that in mind I didnât like the idea of Lucifer and Sam having âco-ownershipâ of their new identity, so I made the choice that Sam had to be the survivor. This tied in well with Samâs new crusade to restore free will to the universe, because heâs breaking the narrative of his own story!
While Castiel wasnât a pov character, his own autonomy and free will was equally as important. Youâll note that many, many paragraphs and conversations revolved around that theme and that in the end Cas followed himself (and love!) which ensured his freedom of self <3
The Brothers are WEIRD PEOPLE!!!! And Codependent to a Worrying Degree, but Itâs Also How They Survive
Itâs very hard to show âunusualâ relationships when youâre writing from the pov of the two people who donât think thereâs anything weird about their relationship. Sure, they say âyeah itâs probably weird that we still share a bedâ but thatâs kinda more in line with âI had a nightmare and I want to be close to the person who makes me feel safeâ. Hashtag normalize co-sleeping when you need it!!!
From there I did try to point out how the boys have a weird perception of lifestyle in the little things they did.Â
From thrifting everything from clothes to appliances to books (thrifting is a valid lifestyle! Itâs incredibly handy when youâre on a budget.)Â
To never actually having condiments or knowing how to use a dishwasher cause theyâve lived in a car, a motel room, or squatted in old houses their whole life.
I tried to have them wear each othersâ clothes or casually swap things as much as possible. They live out of each othersâ pockets!
Also the brothers are just weird people!! Itâs hard to show from their pov, cause they donât know how far off from normal they are, but likeâŚ
Everything about Sam and Amelia was NOT right like holy shit those two were wilding in their grief. They are very lucky things worked out for them and that they got to be hashtag Weird Girls together
Dean explicitly, in the story, gets horny after killing stuff!! Violence has done a number on his psyche and heâs gotten some wires crossed that maybe shouldnât have been, or maybe could be worked out in a safe space but⌠uh⌠how likely do we think Dean is gonna go find a safe space to deal with any of his shit???
LOVE!!! Love is truly what this whole story is all about
If youâve read the stories, you know how much emphasis I put on love. Love is the strongest force in the Spn Universe! Itâs what averted the apocalypse and saved the world (Swan Song), itâs what created free will (Casâ entire arc!) I love love!!!!
I went out of my way to not put any definitions on platonic love vs romantic love because I think love is love is love and how you express that is the difference. Neither is more powerful than the other because LOVE is powerful!! Sam and Cas are the most important people in Deanâs life and he loves them equally! He shows this by giving Cas kisses and stealing Samâs socks.
Itâs a personal pet peeve of mine when I have to hear explanations like âI love you, like a brotherâ or âI love you, but like, as a friend because Iâm a lesbian and youâre a manâ etc etc in media. If you have to continuously define how your characters love each other, then I donât think youâre doing a good job of portraying their relationship. So youâll see that I never put those parameters in any conversation. Dean DOES muse that he loves Cas differently than he loves Sam or Bobby, specifically because there is a romantic and sexual tone that his feelings for Cas takes, but not because he loves Cas more or less than he loves Sam or Bobby.
Which means, if you havenât realized it yet, the Series + Fic Titles are meant to be a complete sentence because the power of love IS the thesis of this series:
The Love It Takes To Exist Again (Samâs journey!)
The Love It Takes To Become a Man (Deanâs journey!)
The Love It Takes To Destroy a Man (TBA)
And now for fun stuff. Behind the scenes!!
Whatâs Something People Probably Donât Know?
The demonic fungal/hydrothermal vent growth on Samâs arm was thrown in literally as I was posting the chapter because I had just finished a 48 hour cram session of writing a report on tube worms for an ecology class (I was chanting my tube worm song as I wrote it) and it ended up being a HUGE hit with both readers and myself. But it was so last minute I had trouble fitting it in more throughout the rest of Samâs story!
Casâ orders? That may or may not have bound him to Dean and removed his free will? Were written into Samâs story and I went âoh SHIT thatâs compellingâ and then left them there as a âguess Iâll figure that out when I get to Deanâs story lolâ
Originally Dean and Cas were supposed to get together after having their souls bonded, and have been in a UST limbo the entire time before that. Mostly because I think the entire concept of âwe just got married of the soul I guess we should try dating?â is very funny. CLEARLY the two of them were way more eager to fall in love than I anticipated (thank you Cas for your honesty) but you can still see shades of this original idea here and there (especially in ch35 of TBAM)
I never intended Dean and Benny to connect so well!! Benny was going to reunite with Andrea, she was going to live, and they were going to go off into the world and leave the story. And, uh, here we are. Iâm still debating if I need to adjust the relationship tag or not haha. Polyamory is fun, especially when I was planning for Sam to be the polyamorous brother...
Speaking of, I canât believe I forgot about Sam and his sexuality! If I rewrote TEA I would have had Sam contemplate more on his lack of sexual appetite due to trauma, up until he meets Benny and he gets to rediscover how he wants to be a sexual person
Many of Sam and Deanâs absolutely stupid sibling conversations were lifted near-verbatim from conversations Iâve had with my siblings
And lastly...
Dem whereâs Kevin????????????? Where is our sweet baby boy????????
Heâs SAFE!! Heâs in the Hunter pipeline somewhere cause Sam handed him off to Bobbyâs people. He and his mom are safe and at some point they probably got rib sigils like SalmonDean did against angels, but for demons. I didnât have room in this story for him!!! But my baby boy is SAFE and I want to get him back to university because itâs WHAT HE DESERVES!!!!
To that point: god there were/are SO many characters that I just didnât include in the story so far because I didnât feel comfortable including them without stalling the story for them. To that point: pretty much everyone who is alive/dead in s8 is that way in this story, except Bobby who gets to live.

Clarice's Story - Season 2
I recently finished Clarice's canon route in Season 2, and I'm currently replaying Season 3 to give myself a refresher on Seb and nail down the details of Clarice's story in that Season. So this will have a Part 2, but I want to write out the decisions made that ultimately led to The Least Satisfying Ending of Season 2â˘, and the reasons behind them that are informed by her past and personality. I know I care more about this than literally anyone, but I'm doing it anyway. So let's get started!
Before the Villa
Raised by Ursula, a famous actress with Antisocial Personality Disorder. She was very loving to Clarice, but wanted her to grow a hard shell like she did.
Ursula gets a participation trophy in parenting for trying her best, but alas, Clarice has severe anxiety that she can't properly express.
Didn't have any friends before going on the show.
Clarice applied for the show with the hope of finding someone nice, though she had very low expectations. She expected all the girls (and fans) to hate her because she went in planning to be ruthless. She was very aware that her mother will be watching, and wanted to make her proud.
Day 1
Friendly to Hope right off the bat - No reason not to be, right?
"I need to look after Number 1." - Clarice isn't underhanded. She tries to be as honest as possible, and this is no exception. The girls need to know where she stands.
"I'm more the quiet and mysterious type." - Outside the Villa, Clarice is much more reserved due to her upbringing.
Picked Noah - He's handsome and doesn't try some cheesy line right off the bat.
Objected to Hope picking him immediately - First day and she's already been screwed over. Her pride is hurt, and she's not going to take this lying down.
Thought Bobby was nice, but there was blatantly no sparks there. He didn't even step forward. She gave him no illusions that she's interested, and flirted with Noah and the other boys at every opportunity. Prioritized grafting over making friends.
However, she welcomed Priya and condemned Lottie for being unnecessarily nasty.
Clarice didn't make any outright enemies except Hope for stealing Noah.
Participated in Lottie's celebration of the Moon - Strategically important to be civil with the girls of course
Day 2
Stayed friendly with Priya, and tried to be with Lottie
Confronted Priya for stealing Bobby - Yeah, she didn't like Bobby herself, but this was the second time she'd had her partner stolen. She was angry and embarrassed.
Day 3
Helped Hannah during breakfast and encouraged her to toughen up - This isn't Friend Island.
Told Rocco to pick her - It wasn't enough to steal Bobby back. She didn't even like him. But there was no chance of getting Noah back from Hope. Rocco was her real second choice on Day 1, and taking him helps her save face.
Told Hannah that Gary won't choose her - She thinks Hannah is totally naive, but has been friendly thus far and respected her couple.
Day 4
"If there's no spark, you've got problems."
Insisted Gary apologizes to Marisol
Grinded on Noah during the Slime Challenge - She's not sure if she's actually interested in him yet, or if she's just trying to piss off Hope.
Spoke up for Priya doing the same thing, and ignores Lottie
Tried to keep the peace between Lottie and Priya, and helps them resolve the issue - It's easier to live in the Villa without needless drama. Clarice's anxiety is hiked up enough as it is.
Day 5
Clarice went down to the pool alone to meet Lucas and Henrik - Why wouldn't she?
While she never cheated on Rocco, she did connect with Lucas like she never had with anyone before. She found him charming and kind and admired his humility despite his obviously posh background.
She definitely suspected Marisol and Rocco having a thing, but hoped he would talk to her about it before acting on it.
Day 6
Clarice was furious about Rocco kissing Marisol during the Kiss and Tell challenge.
She confronted Marisol afterwards, but wasn't aggressive about it. Marisol was by far the girl she's closest to in the Villa at that point. Despite feeling hurt, she wasn't about to ruin the start of a genuine friendship over a man.
Day 7
Worked with Lottie to ice out Rocco, but does agree to speak with him privately.
She was honest about why the girls were upset with him, and unleashed a bit of fury upon him.
Helped Noah win Mr. Love Island - She started to genuinely connect with him and found him very sweet, even though she thought his devotion to Hope was over the top and completely irrational.
Day 8
Extremely worried about the Mean Tweets challenge. She's had more than her fair share of Mean Tweets outside the Villa. She was worried how she came across to the public. She was even worried the producers would throw in one of her mother's.
Oh yeah, Ursula livetweets every episode.
If I had to include one of her tweets in the challenge, it would be:
"It's like Bobby isn't even trying"
She hated that Lucas went home. He was the one person besides Noah that she could see herself having feelings for.
Day 9
Confused by why Lottie wants to get with Gary, but doesn't say anything discouraging. Agrees to not pick him at the next recoupling.
Picked Noah to go on the date - They turn out to have great chemistry, and Clarice was even hopeful that she might be able to choose him at the recoupling.
Clarice fell back on picking Henrik after Hope chose Noah. She didn't see herself with any of the other OG guys.
Day 10
Clarice agreed to work with Priya on Operation Nope - She wanted to be with Noah, and this was the perfect opportunity to really crack on with him. Obviously she knew that Priya fancied him too, but may the best woman win, right?
She didn't tell anyone about ON.
She actually related to Hope acting snappy out of fear, but Hope's insistence on focusing on her rubbed Clarice the wrong way. She tried finding a common ground, and Hope ignored the gesture. She used that as (very poor) justification for...
Clarice kissed Noah. She knew they were having a moment, and went for it. She regretted it after he panicked and left.
Clarice dodged Chelsea's first hug - Why would she want a total stranger touching her without asking?? Though she sort of regrets it in hindsight, because of how close they are now.
"So he's just going to pretend he's innocent then?"
Day 11
She downplayed the severity of Lottie's kiss with Gary - "Hannah only knew him for 3 days." Besides, she's not a hypocrite who would condemn someone else for doing the same thing she did.
Said no to helping Bobby and Marisol resolve the conflicts in the Villa - She didn't trust herself to not make things worse. If things get better, then they'll get better on their own.
Brought Hope the hot chocolate - She knew she was one of the biggest reasons Hope was miserable. They didn't get along, but Clarice never did any of it to hurt Hope. That being said...
She refused to apologize - That's not the kind of woman Ursula raised. She needed to remind herself that she is her Number 1 priority.
Clarice barely interacted with Jakub. He was never her type.
She did apologize to Henrik. She had an obligation to communicate her feelings to him, and didn't. So she apologized. She told him that she fancied Noah and wanted to pursue him, and they broke up.
Bobby was the one to come comfort her and start grafting. She shut it down pretty quickly.
After Marisol asked about it, Clarice told the truth and that she wasn't interested in him. Marisol asked who she is interested in, and she told her Ibrahim just to put a stop to the conversation.
Day 12
Clarice eavesdropped on Noah's conversation with Priya. She was so excited that Noah said he had feelings for her, and that it was all worth it.
No secret of Clarice's was exposed during the Down in Dirt challenge. But if Henrik had opened hers despite her insistence not to, it would've read:
"Clarice was once escorted out of her own great-aunt's pub."
Clarice insisted Priya apologize and make peace with Hope, but refused to back down herself after it came out that Noah wanted to pick her.
"Priya stirring the pot and getting away with it. Can't say I disapprove."
Day 13
Clarice ate the whole cake. Canonically. I don't care, it's one of my favorite parts of the game.
Clarice coupled up with Noah at the Disaster Recoupling.
She was so excited to finally be coupled up with him. She savored every kiss and every touch. That was it for her.
Day 14
Said goodbye to Noah before sneaking off to Casa Amor
The only guy who caught her interest was Kassam, but he clearly wasn't interested, so she never acted on it.
Arjun was basically the leftovers from the other girls, and he seemed like he would be respectful of her space, so Clarice ended up with Arjun for the entirety of Casa Amor. (Even though he didn't give her nearly enough space for her liking.)
Day 15
Clarice didn't volunteer for any extra Villa vs. Villa challenges.
Clarice insisted on remaining loyal to Noah throughout CA.
She enjoyed getting closer to the girls, but was otherwise very reserved.
Day 16
Clarice indulged in Lottie's tea reading, but refused to believe it.
Clarice was shocked by the video the girls received, but still refused to believe Noah would go and sleep with another girl. He wouldn't do that to Hope, and he wouldn't do that to her.
She tried to comfort Hope the rest of the time there. Hope was obviously still upset about the Disaster Recoupling, but she appreciated that Clarice had remained loyal during CA.
Day 17
Clarice spent breakfast with Kassam. She really enjoyed it.
Clarice stuck with Noah.
Day 18
Obviously, Clarice was hurt by Noah bringing back Blake.
Ursula had this to say about Blake's "trying so hard" comment:
"The cheek of this one. Good luck with your career after this, babe."
Looking back, she regards it as karma. Something she deserved.
She didn't really know how to handle it. She kept her distance from Blake as much as possible.
Agreed with Shannon that you get what you deserve in the Villa - She thinks about this conversation often, especially after how she finished the season.
Helped the girls figure out what happened while they were away, and sort of regretted it after...
Noah went back to Hope. Clarice's grievances were ignored and criticized. She was frustrated and hurt.
Clarice saved Elijah from the dumping. She thought maybe she could start to move on from Noah with him.
She said goodbye to Priya, and sort of hated Bobby for letting her be sent home.
She had her first anxiety attack at the Villa that night. Gary and Chelsea were the only ones who knew about it, because they were the ones who stayed up with her until she calmed down.
Day 19
Confided in Chelsea and Shannon that she wished she could've been with Noah
Rather than Shannon teaching her how to read body language, Clarice challenged her to another game of 2 Truths 1 Lie, claiming Ursula raised a perfect liar. (She lost. But Shannon said she should try poker.)
Day 20
Scrambled eggs! It was the only kind Ursula could ever make.
Clarice was nervous about the arrival of Elisa and Jo. Although Jo seemed friendly enough, and Elisa was someone she briefly worked with before.
Didn't agree to talk to Ibrahim for Shannon after the double dates - Shannon needed to talk to him herself. And if he lies, why waste your time with him?
Insisted that Jo be given some space; Defended Chelsea while disagreeing with her actions
Day 21
Had to take multiple breaks from the girls day out - Good lord the fighting was exhausting and nerve-wracking
Helped Hope untangle the mess
Laughed out loud when Jo called her a people pleaser - "I might just be adopted then!"
"A people pleaser! Good on you, love!"
Legitimately almost cried when Chelsea called her amazing??? And when Hope praised her for taking the high road??? She might actually be a good person????
Got the girls to all make up
Cooked đcreamy garlic pastađ for the group with Elijah
Started thinking she might have a chance with Noah again
Day 22
Asked Elijah to choose her at the Recoupling - Gave no promises that they'd be the next epic love story
Pining for Noah...
Day 23
Agreed to help Rahim ask Jo to be his girlfriend - Mainly for Noah's sake, because they're best friends
Went shopping with Elijah - Got Jo's nachos, chocolate, and blanked Elijah's flirtations
First pillow fort!
Grinded on Noah's lap during the Heartrate Challenge, then went to Elijah
Went to bed early
Day 24
Excited and relieved to have Lucas back!
Hugged Hannah upon her arrival - Overall, she was proud of Hannah for coming back more willing to get what she wanted.
Named the spider Todd
Reassured Lottie about Hannah
Clarice reassured Elijah after her date, but went up to the terrace and kissed Lucas.
Later at the party, she went back and slept with him. - After he came back, she thought maybe she was finally over Noah. She can be with Lucas and finally be happy in a couple. And she definitely rushed it.
Day 25
She told Elijah everything, and she felt horrible that he was more into her than she was into him.
Confessed to the girls after
Obviously bombed the Happily Ever After challenge
Clarice was left to couple up with Lucas.
Day 26
She was noticeably distant from Lucas - She wrote it off as guilt for cheating with him, though she was still happy to be coupled up with him.
Lottie's snide comments about her cheating made her distance herself from Lottie too.
Became Bra Sisters with Chelsea! And made up a handshake!
Lost the Couple Trouble challenge, so she and Lucas didn't go on the date in the Hideaway
Talking to Gary about his body image and therapy inspired her to go to therapy herself once the show was over. She really related to him when he said this:
Helped Marisol pack - Marisol was still one of her closest friends in the Villa. And she honestly thought it should've been her and Lucas going home.
Day 27
Babies? P A N I C M O D E!!
Clarice does want kids in the future, but doesn't trust herself to not fuck them up.
Very irritated by Lucas's refusal to help with the baby. It stressed her out more than it really needed to, so their unsteady relationship took a hit.
The beach break was a relief. And by the end of it, she was really happy to have made actual friends on the show.
Sent Ibrahim and Jo home - Sure, they're a better couple, but Chelsea is her emotional support bra!
Day 28
Finally got to talk to her mother. She "praised" Clarice for not letting "peer pressure" stop her from getting the guy she really wanted. (It was really a reminder that she still doesn't have him, and she should still go for him. However, what Ursula called peer pressure is what most people consider respecting relationship boundaries.)
Felt awkward talking to Lucas's family
Said no to being his girlfriend at the Final Date - They hadn't been together long enough, and his text conversation with Ursula was fine, but cryptic.
Privately relieved that Noah hadn't asked Hope to be his girlfriend yet
Day 29
Dress shopping was... An experience. She's definitely not unfamiliar with formal wear, but she spent a long time deciding who she should dress for. She ultimately chose a dress she knew Lucas would like.
Hopeless at dancing. She never got any of the steps right.
She tried to be as lighthearted with the speech as possible - She has a hard time opening up, and really, there wasn't many deep feelings to express for him.
Jumped in the pool
Sent Hannah and Elijah home - It was a tough decision, and it came down to Lottie and Gary's relationship being stronger.
Went up to the terrace with Noah, but she decided she was done with him leading her on, struggling to make a decision. She ended it once and for all, as opposed to sleeping with him.
Day 30
Still reeling from the night before
Helped Chelsea make breakfast - She told Chelsea that she wasn't feeling confident in her couple and their chance of winning.
Clarice and Lucas made it all the way to the end, but Noah and Hope won Love Island.
Lucas acted happy to be with Clarice until they went back to the Villa for the After Party. Then, he dumped her. - Clarice was furious, but she felt as though she absolutely deserved it.
Noah decided it would be best if they stayed away from each other.
Clarice told Hannah about what Lucas did, and Hannah promised to give him hell. That solidified their friendship for after the show.
Clarice pulled Chelsea aside, Chelsea nicked a bottle of champagne for them, and confessed everything to her. Her thing with Noah, his lingering looks, the terrace, Lucas acting for the cameras, everything.
Clarice went home with her mother. And cried almost the entire way to the airport.
After the Villa
She faced backlash for her actions in the Villa, but the Islanders she befriended came to her defense.
She had a long talk with Hope after everyone had a chance to watch the season back. It was a miracle Hope and Noah won, considering how much of his time with Clarice had been included in episodes. Hope broke up with him shortly after, and she and Clarice started to repair what they could. They agreed that they absolutely would've been friends if Clarice had made different choices. But for now, they're just being civil.
Ursula apologized for all the biting remarks about people in the Villa, except Noah and Lucas.
Clarice managed to keep her from running a full on smear campaign against them.
Clarice started therapy, and even got anti-anxiety medication.
The producers of Love Island offered her a second chance.

Words: 5,190 Demon!Dean x Reader Warnings: None really! A/N: This is part of a series! Read the other parts first! Part 1 :: Part 2 :: Part 3 :: Part 4 :: Part 5 :: Part 6 :: Part 7.
Your name: submit What is this?
Some years ago
âFuck!â you slammed a hand against the steel door, but it was useless. You had heard the heavy bolt click into place clearly and with a resonate echo heavy with foreboding. You were trapped. âGoddammit!â You suppressed the urge to kick the door, knowing that at best youâd end up with a broken toe and no closer to freedom. âNow what? We honestly should have expected something like this from Bobby...â
Dean was moving around behind you, searching every square inch of the room for some hint of how to deactivate whatever panic button you and he had unknowingly switched on. âYeaaaah. Should have predicted that we wouldnât be able to swing by and a have a quick, flawless search.â
You leaned your back against the door and rested your head against it. âI figured it wouldnât be flawless considering the sheer amount of papers and books in the houseâitâs like searching for a needle in a haystackâbut I did not expect to be locked in a windowless panic room.â You shut your eyes. âFuck.â
Dean straightened up, disheartened. He scratched the back of his head and peered down at the panel he had just discovered. âWell⌠hereâs somethingâŚâ he said, but you noted that he didnât sound particularly hopeful.
Dean blew out a long exhale and straightened up. Your hand dropped from his shoulder. âYep. We are pretty fucked,â he agreed.
You stared up at the ceiling. âThis has got to be solid iron. An underground panic roomâno cell service. Complicated electrical panel. Probably requires a numeric password or something, which was known by one person who is now deceased. Guessing he probably also programmed it so we only are allowed a limited amount of wrong guesses before something horrible happens to us in here. Locked in,â you summarized, finally catching Deanâs eyes. âGreat.â
Dean sighed again, at a loss for what to do next. âThe downside is that this place was set up by Bobby. But⌠on the other hand, the upside is that this place was set up by Bobby,â Dean said, gesturing to the shelves stacked to the ceiling with suppliesâjugs of drinking water, MREs, emergency blankets, flashlights and headlamps, sleeping pads, medical supplies, everything one could want while trying to surf out a zombie invasion or the apocalypse. There was even an actual bathroom, which you had both first mistook for being a closet.
âWaitâwait! What is that? What IS that?!â You said, pointing vehemently at a shape behind Dean so shrouded in dust it was almost camouflaged into the wall. âIs that a fucking landline?â
Dean followed your gaze. âIt looks like it,â he said guardedly.
Then reality crashed down on you. The likelihood that that old line was still functional was probably in the 0.000 â 0.001% range. âPlease tell me there is a dial tone,â you said, looking desperately at Dean.
He laughed gruffly. âI will bet you $500 that there isnât.â
âDo you even have $500?â you countered.
âThanks to Mr. Chip Killway and his checking account I have more than that,â he said with a smirk.
You laughed. âChip Killway? What the hell kind of name is that?â
âI know, right?â Dean said. âI thought he sounded douchey. Makes me feel less guilty about stealing his money.â Dean stepped around some boxes and hovered a hand over the phone. âSo, are you in? $500?â he joked.
âItâs somehow less enticing now that I know it isnât your money,â you replied with a smirk.
âAlrightâfine. If there IS a dial tone when I pick up this phone, I will take off all my clothes. If there isnât, you take off all YOUR clothes.â He finished with a boyish smirk and wiggled his eyebrows at you. You crossed your arms and gave him an appraising look, trying to ignore the rush of heat you felt in your cheeks.
âHow is that fair? I lose either way.â
âOh! Ow! Ouch!â Dean dramatically clutched a hand to his chest, eliciting a light laugh from you.
âWould you just pick up the phone, you idiot?â
Dean lifted the mustard-colored, plastic receiver and held it up to his ear. âNothing,â he said. âSorry, Y/N. Time to get naked.â
âDean!â
âI donât make the rulesââ
âYou literally made up those rulesââ
âDonât hate the playerâhate the game,â he said.
You rolled your eyes at him and sat down on a nearby crate. âOkay, Casanova. In all seriousness, what are we going to do here?â
âI think we only have one option.â
âDean, if you say âget nakedâ one more time I will shoot you with this flare gunââ
âGod, get your mind out of the gutter, you perv. JesusâŚâ You chucked a package of dehydrated food at him and he laughed. âI was going to say âwait.ââ
You groaned. âI was afraid you were going to say that. Sam wonât be here for another day or two and then who knows how long itâs going to take him to figure out a way to get us out of here.â
âWell⌠if he tries to call us and gets no answer he will probably get worried, and heâll probably hurryâŚâ Dean ran a hand through his hair and set aside his jesting at the worried expression on your face, your characteristic knit brow, with the little worry line appearing by your left eyebrow. âHey. Weâre fine. Weâve got everything we need in hereâitâll be okay.â
You chewed your bottom lip. That wasnât exactly what had you so agitated. âI know. I know. Weâreâweâll be fineâŚâ
Suddenly, the air was as thick as molasses as Dean and you both realized that you were trapped together in a confined space. Alone. Unlikely to be interrupted. For an extended period of time. The hair on the back of your neck stood up like a chill breeze had just rushed over your skin.
Youâd spent time alone together before. Of course, you had⌠but there was always some life or death crisis to draw your attention or the chance that Cas or Sam would walk in at any moment. Or as soon as you started to feelâsomethingâone or the other made some excuse to leave or break the tension or back away from it...
Even now just at the thought of it your heart was racing and you suddenly couldnât think of a damn thing to talk aboutâto say to him.
You watched him looking over the contents of the shelves, the muscles in his back easily visible through his thin t-shirt as he moved boxes and bins around. You felt your cheeks grow warm. âGuess we have some time to kill,â he said, grabbing something from the top shelf and turning around, immediately catching your gaze. You both looked at each other for a moment and then down at the sleeping pad in his hands and back up at each other. You felt yourself blushing more fervently and quickly averted your eyes while Dean laughed nervously.
âHehâforâfor the floor. For sitting on! Um,â he scruffed a hand through his hair awkwardly, feeling heat rising in his chest. Smooth, Dean. Smooth. God, what was wrong with him? Suddenly he felt like a giddy school boy. Why did that always happen around you? Heâd be fine one minute and then the nextâBAM! His heart would start racing and he would suddenly be very aware of the color of your eyes and the sparks of light they threw and the shade of pink of your lips and their perfect Cupidâs bow and the way you would chew on the bottom one when you were thinking andâ âDo you want one? To sit on?â he offered. You waved him off.
âMaybe later,â you said. There was a long silence and the air was still heavy as you avoided each otherâs eyes, trying to think of something to say. You swallowed at the lump in your throat, willing it to disappear to no avail. What the fuck?! This was Dean! Youâd lived in the bunker together for years! Youâd seen each other on your worst and best days. Youâd tolerated early morning and late-night bad moods. Youâd patched each other up after huntsâthough you admitted that the intimacy of that sometimes got to you. Christ, why did this always happen?? What was wrong with you?!
âHey,â Dean said suddenly.
âYeah?â You seized on it, hoping he had some topic of conversation in mind which would distract you from how goddamn green his eyes were.
âWanna play a game?â
ââŚlike?â
Dean shrugged. âI donât know.â He thought for a moment. â20 questions?â
You laughed. âWhat, are we eight?â
Dean laughed gruffly. âAlright. Fair⌠Umm⌠Never Have I Ever?â
âIsnât that supposed to be a drinking game?â
He gave you a knowing smirk, and pulled a bottle of whiskey off a nearby shelf. âYouâre goddamn right it is.â
You looked at him hesitantly, one eyebrow raised, studying him. âI donât knowâŚâ
The green in Deanâs eyes seemed to spark. âCome on! Itâll be fun! I promise I will keep my hands to myself when you are inevitably waaay more intoxicated than me,â he grinned.
You raised an eyebrow and looked at him for a long moment. âWell⌠thereâs nothing else to do. I guess this could be interesting,â you said.
Dean settled more comfortably on the sleeping pad he was sitting on. âOh, yeah. I plan on finding out all kinds of new things about you,â he joked.
You laughed, but you did suddenly feel a little warm and you were quite sure your face was tinged pink. âBe careful. You might.â You wondered just what you were getting yourself into.
Dean gave you an unsure look, but smiled. âOkay. Iâll go first.â He thought for a moment and then cleared his throat. A wide smile grew on his face. âNever have I ever crashed my car into a fire hydrant.â
Your mouth dropped open. His expression was smug. âHey, that wasâI had a head injury!â
âSo? You still did it. Drink!â
You bit your bottom lip and looked at him with a tight smile. âSo, that is how youâre gonna play it, hmm?â
Dean laughed. The gruffness of his laugh with the way his eyes crinkled at the corners killed you every time. âThatâs how Iâm gonna play it.â He shrugged.
âFine. Give me that,â you said, snatching the whiskey bottle from him with a sassy look and taking a sip. âMy turn.â You seized him up with your eyes.
âNever have I ever⌠had a one night stand.â You punctuated the end of the sentence by shoving the whiskey bottle back at Dean and giving him a satisfied smile.
He took it begrudgingly but there was a curious expression on his face. âWait⌠seriously?â
âYeah, seriously,â you said. You felt your cheeks growing a little pink again. âWhat?â
Dean shrugged and took a swig from the bottle. âI donât know. Iâm just surprised I guess. I mean, youâreââ he cut himself off, and suddenly looked down at his feet. âUhhâŚâ
âIâm what?â you pressed him.
He shrugged. âI guess itâs just not your style,â he said. It wasnât really a question. âCanât imagine you never had the opportunity,â he said a little sheepishly, avoiding your eyes. He rubbed a hand over the back of his neck nervously.
You nodded, catching his eyes again. The warmth in your face was growing and you were quite positive it was bright red. You fiddled with the hem of your shirt. âYeah⌠Not my style. Iâve never been good atâat just sex.â
âYouâre not good at sex?â he joked. âDamn, what a disappointment. Well, I could give you some pointers⌠Maybe help you practiceââ
âDean! You know what I said!â Dean laughed heartily and caught your eyes again. âYour turn, Winchester. What have you got?â
Dean decided to go a little more serious after that last one. âRight. Umm⌠Never have I everâbeen to Prom?â He looked at you questioningly for a few seconds but you showed no sign of reaching for the bottle to take a drink.
You only gave him a small smile.
âWow, I thought for sure I would get you on that one. You didnât go to Prom?â
You shook your head. âNope. No Prom.â
âWhy not?â Dean asked, studying your expression.
Your eyes turned downward and for a moment Dean thought you were blinking back some emotion. In another second, you were back to your old self, giving him a sarcastic smile. âItâs called âNever Have I Ever,â not â20 Questionsâ.â
Dean let you get away with the deflection, but he could sense that there was something there you were holding back⌠âAlright, alright. Um. Never Have I everâŚâ Dean snapped his fingers and pointed at you, âflirted with a bald valet for information!â
âWhat?! That is WAY too specific!â
âHey, we didnât lay out any ground rules! That is totally valid!â he argued back.
âThat was for a case! Youâre such an ass!â You grabbed another dried food packet and whipped it at him, catching him in the chest. Dean tossed his head back and laughed before shoving the whiskey bottle at you.
You snatched it and took a sip. âOof,â you said, swallowing the burn in your throat. âShould have known Bobby would have booze in his end-of-days bunker.â You were definitely starting to feel that familiar giddiness, a warm buzz from the liquor.
âThe man kept a well-stocked pantry, thatâs for damn sure,â Dean said, admiration clear on his face.
âNever have I ever been arrested,â you said with a wide, satisfied smile. âI feel like you should drink like ten times for this one,â you said, handing the bottle back to Dean. His fingers brushed yours as he took it, rolling his eyes at you, and you startled a little at the contact. It was like a hot spark had jumped up your arm.
âIn our line of work, if you havenât been arrested, youâre doing something wrong,â he argued, pointing vehemently in your direction. He took a big swig and smacked his lips afterwards.
âNah, Iâm just a waaaay smoother talker than you. I should have been arrested,â you counted on your fingers, âsix times.â
âSix?â
âSix. Also, it helps that Iâm much, much cuter than you,â you said, wrinkling your nose at him.
A small smile accompanied by a peculiar expression came over Deanâs face. âI canât argue with thatâŚâ he said.
You felt yourself blush and stood up. âUmm, bathroom break,â you said. Ugh. Chicken! you mentally scolded yourself. There you went again⌠as soon as you started to feel something you tucked your tail and ran the other way. What were you so afraid of?
âIâll be here,â Dean replied, leaning back so he was laying flat on his back on the sleeping pad he had spread out.
_ _ _ _ _ _
âYouâre drunk,â Dean accused you, laughing at how you had just slurred your words.
âYouâre drunk!â you argued back, indignant.
âNot as drunk as you,â Dean said, shaking his head, a wide smile still on his lips. âHere. Câmere. Give me that,â he said, taking the whiskey bottle from you. Dean stood up and capped it, replacing it on a nearby shelf. âWe need to get some food and some water in you,â he said. âOr youâre gonna have a wicked hangover tomorrow and I donât want to be trapped in here with you in that state.â
âWhatever. Iâm a delight,â you said.
Dean was digging through some of the dehydrated food packs on the shelves. âDo you want beef stew orrrr⌠hmm--beef stew?â
âI guess Iâll take beef stew.â
âBeef stew it is!â
You crossed the room to another set of shelves and stood on your tiptoes, trying to reach the sleeping pads and the sleeping bags, tired of sitting on a crate. Your balance, however, was somewhat compromised due the imbibed whiskey and you knocked a plastic water jug off a high shelf when you mis-stepped while reaching for what you wanted. âShit!â
You ducked the water jug, but if Dean hadnât quickly turned and steadied you, you would have been splayed out on the floor, possibly with a new bump on the back of your head. The cookware that had been in Deanâs hands was clattering and ringing on the floor harshly but the two of you were frozen. Deanâs hands were on your hips. He watched your lips part slightly and his heart was hammering in his chest. The way you were looking up at him, your eyes a little wide with surprise but fixated on hisâhe gulped at the sudden tightness in his throat. But he suddenly realized that the moment he should have let go of you was long past and he quickly withdrew. âYou okay?â he asked.
You couldnât get any words out as you stepped back from him and you only nodded.
He anxiously ran his fingers through his hair, still taking in your expression. âHehâI told you youâre drunk.â He turned and grabbed a sleeping pad and sleeping bag for you from the shelf.
âYeah. Thanks,â you said, still a little stunned. âUmm, you always did have good reflexes.â Dean clenched and unclenched his hands a couple times, trying to shake the tingly feeling in his fingers.
He nodded. âNo problem.â
Dean picked up the cookware and you set up the sleeping pad and sleeping bag on the floor, trying to get as comfortable as you could. You felt suddenly sober and you couldnât figure out if it was almost cracking your head open or Deanâs hands on your hips that had done it⌠but you suspected the latter. You could still almost feel the weight of them on you and god, your heart was absolutely pounding.
A half hour later you and Dean had both eaten and he had insisted on continuously refilling your cup with water. You did the clean up after your camp-style dinner and when you finished you noticed Dean flopped down on his sleeping pad, paging through a book.
You sank down next to him. âWhatâs that?â
He flipped another page, a vague crooked smile growing on his face. âI havenât seen this in⌠probably ten, maybe fifteen years,â he said. He partially closed it so you could see the cover.
âMonsters and Myths,â you read aloud.
âWhen Sammy and I were little, my Dad would drop us off here at Bobbyâs if he had a hunt he didnât want us anywhere near, or if there was a job in the area. I would sneak this book off the shelves and weâd stay up late looking through it, reading about all the monsters and talking about how Dad would take them downâwhether he had ever fought any of them for real. It used to scare the crap out of us,â he laughed gruffly.
âItâs kind of still scary now,â you said. âKnowing a lot of these probably do actually exist.â You leaned toward him to read the entry he was on about Kludde, a Flemish beast from Belgian folklore that wandered the countryside in the form of a massive, winged, black wolf.
âYeah,â Dean agreed. âItâs weird though. I wonder why Bobby chose this out of all his books as one to bring into the panic room,â he said.
âIf I had to guess, Iâd say itâs because he had memories about it just like you do. Nothing got past Bobby. Iâm sure he knew you used to sneak it off the shelves.â Dean looked over at you and met your eyes. You were side by side, both laying spread out on the floor. You were close. Your faces were only a few inches apart, both propped up on your elbows. âProbably some of his fondest memories of Little Dean and Little Sammy,â you said with a small smile. âThey would be good company if the world outside was burning.â
Dean felt like he melted. He loved that little smileâit filled your whole face with light and warmth. It felt like all the air in the room had stopped moving and the stillness was electric. You held his eyes as long as you dared before you shyly blinked away and looked down at your hands. But Dean was still studying your face, and he turned more toward you.
âWill you tell me?â
You gave him a questioning look.
âAbout Prom. Why you didnât go.â
Your brow automatically drew down over your eyes and your lips pouted in a soft frown. You considered his question for a long moment, and then spoke with some effort. âMy dad was sick,â you said with a sad smile, your eyes a little misty. You shrugged. âProm wasnât important.â
Dean easily recognized the grief in your eyes. âIâm sorry. What was it?â
You cleared your throat to ease the tightness from emotion there. âPancreatic cancer. He passed away the summer before my senior year in high school.â
âGod, Iâm sorry.â Dean watched you fighting emotion.
You nodded and forced yourself to heave in a shaky breath. âYeah. It was hard.â
âYou never said anything to me or Sammy before.â
You shrugged. âItâs still hard to talk about. Andâeveryone has lost someone one way or another.â Your eyes found Deanâs again and you felt a chill, or electricity run up your back.
Suddenly, Dean reached up and gently moved a stray strand of hair away from your face, his fingers gentle on your skin. His eyes seemed to be flitting between yours and your lips and you felt like there was something pulling you toward himâsomething magnetic, and you wanted to give into it so badly. You were teetering on the edge. You subconsciously bit your bottom lip and thatâs when Dean couldnât stand it anymore. He closed the distance between the two of you, his lips meeting yours, and you leaned into him desperately, feeling his hand gently cupping your face, his fingers trailing softly down your neck. That kiss stoked a wave of warmth in your chest and you relished his lips on yours, soft at first, but growing more pleading, more passionate, almost desperate, like a dam had broken.
But all of a sudden, Dean pulled back and his eyes were searching your face, his lips still just inches from yours. âWaitââ he said, his voice a little raspy, ââIâm sorry. I shouldnâtâyouâre drunk.â It took every ounce of his willpower to break contact with you.
You couldnât have looked away from his green eyes if you had wanted to, the fire in them was all consuming. âNo,â you said vaguely, breathlessly, one corner of your mouth curving up in a smile. âIâm not anymore.â
That was all Dean needed to hear. âOh, thank God.â He crashed into you again, even more hungrily now and you gave in, eagerly wrapping your arms around his neck, feeling his hands in your hair and tracing your curves. Soon you were both pressed together completely, your legs tangled with his. Deanâs tongue flitted over your bottom lip. You parted yours and he kissed you more deeply, with more fire. And then he was over you and you were flat on your back. You slipped one hand barely underneath the hem of his shirt and your fingers floated over his skin, across his back, tickling at his hip, sending tingles up his spine, making him smile into the kiss. Dean slid a hand over the silky skin on your arm, pressing it up over your head, lacing his fingers with yours, kissing you more insistently, his hips pressing into you.
You slid your fingers into his hair and were lost. Both of you were lost in that kissâit was fireworks, it was heat, it wasâit was so much better than either of you could have guessed. It was effortless, kissing him. Your lips and bodies moved in sync without thought.
Finally, Deanâs kiss grew softer again and he pulled away just enough to look into your eyes. Both of you were out of breath, and smiles grew on your faces. You felt your cheeks coloring bright red, and you bit your bottom lip. Dean rested his forehead against yours and he shut his eyes, still riding the wave of that high.
âThat wasâŚâ but he didnât even have a word for it.
âYeah,â you agreed.
âIâI better just try to be a gentleman and stop here or I will not be responsible for my actions,â he said with a gruff laugh, repositioning from where he was over you to lay down next to you again.
You were still trying to catch your breath, staring straight up at the ceiling.
Dean couldnât take his eyes off you and he studied your profile, the gentle slope of your nose, the way your eyelashes whisked upwards away from your cheeks. âI wish I had done that a long time ago,â he said quietly.
You turned to look at him with a small, shy smile. âMe too,â you laughed, feeling a wave of heat in your chest. Dean could see you flush and he leaned in again to give you one last soft kissâthis one sweet and slow.
Neither of you wanted to say anything more. You just wanted to drink each other in. It was perfectâit was vulnerable and intimate and honest. After a little while, Dean grabbed the book again and with a tilt of his head and an outstretched arm as an invitation, you cuddled close and watched as he paged through the old volume.
Some time later, you were both asleep--Deanâs arm under and wrapped around you and your head on his shoulder and a hand gentle on his chest.
_ _ _ _ _ _
You startled awake the next morning to a banging sound followed by a familiar voice.
âDEAN!â
It was, unmistakably, Sam.
You and Dean both sat up stock straight. âSam?â
âDEAN! Can you hear me?!â
You looked up toward the source the sound. âItâs coming through that vent,â you said, climbing to your feet. âSAM! WEâRE DOWN HERE!â
âY/N? IS DEAN WITH YOU? WHATâS GOING ON?â
âIâM HERE, SAM! WEâRE STUCK IN BOBBYâS FUCKING PANIC ROOM!â
âWHAT?â
âBOBBYâS. FUCKING. PANIC ROOM!â
This was followed by more loud banging sounds and some sort of metallic clanking and squealing.
âCan you hear me better?â Samâs voice was clearer.
âYes! Sam, thank God,â you yelled back. âWe were worried you wouldnât be here for another day or more!â
âI tried calling both of you like ten times with no answer! I got worried.â
âAwesome. Now, figure out how to get us out of here,â Dean chimed in.
âUhhâŚHow?â
âWe tripped the system somehow. Thereâs some kind of computer panel in here. Maybe thereâs another one outside or in the house somewhere. Maybe you can hack it somehow and override the lockdown?â you offered.
âAlright⌠Iâll see what I can do. Just sit tight.â
Dean caught your eyes and laughed wryly. âNot like we have any other choice, right?â he said. That was the first time since you had woken up to the chaos from Sam that the two of you had really looked at each other. You immediately felt your cheeks flush. Deanâs lips curved in a gentle smile as he took in your bashfulness. âHowâs your head?â
You nodded. âFine. Howâs yours?â
âJust fine,â he said, bouncing a little on the balls of his feet. He nervously rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. âSo⌠that really happened, right?â
âWhat?â
He cleared his throat at averted his eyes back up toward the vent Sam had been talking to you through. âI meanâlast nightâwe totally made out. I didnât⌠dream that?â
You bit your bottom lip and smiled nervously. âWe⌠definitely made outâŚâ
Dean gave you one of his classic boyish grins. âAwesome.â
Sam was surprisingly fast at cracking the system, with a little help from Charlie over the phone. He had you and Dean out within an hour. You grinned at him as he finally pulled the door open from the outside.
âHey,â he said. âYou two interested in rejoining the world?â
You laughed and gave him a quick hug. âOur hero,â you said.
Dean patted Samâs shoulder as he stepped past him. âWay to go, Sammy.â
Sam stepped forward to peer inside the panic room. âGeez. Well, it looks like you had everything you needed. Bobby was always prepared for anything. How long were you stuck in there?â
You checked the time on your phone. âAbout 18 hours.â
Sam laughed. âYikes. What the hell did you do to pass the time?â He turned toward you and Dean again, shutting the door behind him. You were willing your cheeks not to turn red. Based on Samâs curious expression and Deanâs unwillingness to meet his eyes, you were pretty sure Sam knew something was up. He raised his eyebrows. âWhatâs with you two?â
âWhat? Nothing,â Dean said. âLetâs get out of here.â
Dean turned away to head back up the root cellar stairs into the streaming sunlight and Sam gave you an inquisitive look. You awkwardly cleared your throat and avoided his questioning eyes. âReady?â
ââŚSure,â he agreed. He followed behind you, but he could sense that something had changed between you and Dean.

Current day
You sat sideways in what once was Crowleyâs throne, legs draped over one arm of the seat. The heavy door to the room was shut to drown out the sounds of Hell. There was a laptop in your lap and you opened a web browser. âHuh. Hell has surprisingly good Wifi,â you wondered aloud to yourself. âNow, to find who is next⌠You searched through recent court case acquittals until the squeaking of metal hinges interrupted your attention. You sighed heavily but didnât look at the demon who had just entered. âWhat?â Your tone was bored, cold.
âWe--we think weâve found it,â the demon stuttered out.
You sat up straight, swinging your feet to the floor. âWell?â you prodded.
âWe can take you there.â
You rose from the throne completely and locked your eyes on the demon. âAnd heâs there?â
Something which looked an awful lot like terror was on the demonâs face, but he nodded.
âTake me there,â you demanded. âItâs time I meet Lucifer for myself.â

Deanâs Old Yeller Principle
âHe made me so mad at first that I wanted to kill him. Then, later, when I had to kill him, it was like having to shoot some of my own folks. Thatâs how much Iâd come to think of the big yeller dog.â
â Fred Gipson, Old Yeller, Chapter 1 (Published in 1942)
When I was twelve or thirteen my English teacher passed out copies of Old Yeller as assigned reading. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the book, the quote above from the opening chapter tells you most everything you need to know for the context of this meta post. And for those of us who are still emotionally scarred from the damned book, Iâm sorry for dredging up those memories.
Now, before I go any further, a disclaimer: Blah, blah, blah, this meta and interpretation of canon is my own. Iâm not trying to âpreachâ to anyone about why Dean âis allowedâ to be an asshole while heâs grieving or going through some shit. Or any other argument that consistently gets thrown back in the face of meta posts like this whenever Dean is being an emotional dick. Youâre entitled to your interpretations, feelings and reactions, as am I. Iâm merely offering this meta to 1) get it out of my mind 2) point and wave about the nods to this classic book thatâs traumatized generations of American children 3) cheer Dean on for turning yet another teaching from the âolder, wiser generationâ John came from on its head.
Groovy? Okay, now we can move on.
Iâm gonna throw the rest of this under the cut for length and to keep people who are sensitive to pets / animals dying in really sad ways from having their days ruined by talking more about the book unless theyâre good with having that happen.
Now, as I said in my disclaimer bit, Old Yeller is largely considered classic literature here in the states. My memories of it are a weird mix of vague on the details and strong on the emotions it evoked. From what I remember, the main character was a young teenager when his family brought home Yeller. For whatever reason, our main character hated this dog. I donât remember the details and theyâre honestly not important to this meta. The hate he felt toward the dog is important. So is the fact that the hate slowly turned into love and devotion to the dog. Which made it even more gutting when, on a hunting trip (if I remember correctly) Yeller was bitten by a rabid animal and contracted rabies.
At the end of the novel, the Coates family are once again attacked by a wild animal, a wolf, and saved by Yellerâs bravery. Yeller is bit during the attack and becomes infected with rabies. Travis knows that despite his connection to Yeller and Yellerâs protection of his family, the dog must be killed before it becomes fully rabid and does any harm to him and his family. As the man of the house while his father is gone, Travis takes it upon himself to put Yeller out of his misery with his hunting rifle. Travis is heartbroken by what he has done, but knows that it was the right thing to do for his family. (From here.)
Sound familiar? Good. Thatâs what I thought too when we got the shot above in the graveyard in 14x20.
[Obviously, rabies, once there are symptoms like Yeller had, is incurrable, so putting him down was literally the only option. And we are talking here about Supernatural, which operates on soap opera rules so anything goes, but letâs just roll with the similarities for the sake of argument.]
I remember telling my husband while we were watching it âDude, theyâre really going to Old Yeller Jack, omg.â (I even made fanart of the moment.)
And then, something incredible happened.
Dean threw out the script yet again and set off season 15 with the dull thud of a gun being tossed into the grass.
Now, I hear you. âThatâs great, Ami. Why should we care?â
Lemme tell you a thing, friend.
In order to tell you thing thing, I want to take a trip way back to season 4. Back when the brothers were still nose deep into John Winchesterâs gospel of Monster = Evil = Kill The Thing.
(Screencaps are all from Home of the Nutty.)
4x21 - When the Levee Breaks
Sam: Stop bossing me around, Dean. Look. My whole life, you take the wheel, you call the shots, and I trust you because you are my brother. Now Iâm asking you, for once, trust me.
Dean: No. You donât know what youâre doing, Sam.
Sam: Yes, I do.
Dean: Then thatâs worse.
Sam: Why? Look, Iâm telling you-
Dean: Because itâs not something that youâre doing, itâs what you are! It means- Dean cuts himself off.
Sam: What? No. Say it. (Sam has tears in his eyes.)
Dean: It means youâre a monster. (Transcript from here.)
I remember the first time I watched the show and I got to this episode. That fucking line was such a gut punching moment. And it was such an effective and emotional moment that Ruby was able to extend it later to further manipulate Sam.
Now, the screencap I grabbed for this moment is of Dean in tears (well, that single man tear heâs known for) after labelling Sam a monster for a reason. I want to remind all of us of just how much it killed Dean to have to use that label for Sam. To have to try to rationalize that the boy he raised, his brother, the guy who has been there forever and has always been Deanâs charge to take care of is now the thing that Dean is going to have to put down because he falls under the label of monster.
You know what, letâs go back a little farther, to the first episode of season 2. To this moment:
Remember this look? The one we later learned was thanks to John telling Dean that Dean was going to need to put Sam down? That Sam was going to become a monster? Yeah, ouch.
I added the year Old Yeller was published (1942) to the quote at the top of this meta to help give some context about the time it was written and the world it was released into. Iâd also like to make note that in 1957 (or about a year before Henry Winchester jumped forward in time to meet the brothers in season 8 and give them keys to the bunker and had to choose to abandon John when John was still a fairly young boy) Disney released a movie version of the book. Itâs absolutely, if the movie exists in the SPN world, the kind of thing young John would have watched and taken some kind of black and white moral guidance from.
Itâs the kind of book/movie that John would have probably (note, this is where we start diving into my own headcanons for a moment) made sure the boys were aware of when he started thinking about bringing them on hunts to keep them from freezing because the âpersonâ on the other end of their shotgun is someoneâs mom. I could see it being the kind of thing heâd use as a way to show them both that, yes, shit is hard but you have to do the right thing and sometimes that means killing the thing you love. At least, I could picture him thinking that way. (Also, this still makes me wonder about exactly how early John started suspecting there was something different about Sam, but thatâs a whoooole other post.)
Moving on and forward to season 6.
6x20 - The Man Who Would Be King
Castiel: The angel-proofing Bobby put up on the house â he got a few things wrong.
Dean: Well, itâs too bad we got to angel-proof in the first place, isnât it? Why are you here?
Castiel: I want you to understand.
Dean: Oh, believe me, I get it. Blah, blah, Raphael, right?
Castiel: Iâm doing this for you, Dean. Iâm doing this because of you.
Dean: Because of me. Yeah. You got to be kidding me.
Castiel: Youâre the one who taught me that freedom and free will â
Dean: Youâre a freakinâ child, you know that? Just because you can do what you want doesnât mean that you get to do whatever you want!
Castiel: I know what Iâm doing, Dean.
Dean: Iâm not gonna logic you, okay? Iâm saying donât⌠Just âcause. Iâm asking you not to. Thatâs it.
Castiel: I donât understand.
Dean: Look, next to Sam, you and Bobby are the closest things I have to family â that you are like a brother to me. So, if Iâm asking you not to do something⌠You got to trust me, man.
Castiel: Or what?
Dean: Or Iâll have to do what I have to do to stop you.
Castiel: You canât, Dean. Youâre just a man. Iâm an angel.
Dean: I donât know. Iâve taken some pretty big fish. (Transcript from here.)
This was after two seasons of Cas fighting by their side. Two seasons of Cas giving heaven the middle finger on behalf of the Winchesters. It was enough time for Deanâs first reaction in a time of confusion on a hunt was to call Cas for help. And it was enough time for Dean to go from assuming Cas was a demon summoned with âbad mojoâ to drag him out of hell on behalf of Sam to genuinely starting to care about Cas.
Dean did threaten to take Cas out here if he persisted down the path he was on, but you can tell by the rest of the conversation and just how hard it was to convince Dean that Cas was lying to them that Dean was hoping talking would work and he wouldnât be forced to put Cas down.
UnfortunatelyâŚ
6x22 - The Man Who Knew Too Much
Castiel: You doubted me, fought against me, but I was right all along.
Dean: Okay, Cas, you were. Weâre sorry. Now letâs just defuse you, okay?
Castiel: What do you mean?
Dean: Youâre full of nuke. Itâs not safe. So, before the eclipse ends, letâs get them souls back to where they belong.
Castiel: Oh no, they belong with me.
Dean: No, Cas, itâs it-itâs scrambling your brain.
Castiel: No, Iâm not finished yet. Raphael had many followers, and I must punish them all severely.
Dean: Listen to me. Listen, I know thereâs a lot of bad water under the bridge, but we were family once. Iâd have died for you. I almost did a few times. So if that means anything to you⌠Please. Iâve lost Lisa, Iâve lost Ben, and now Iâve lost Sam. Donât make me lose you too. You donât need this kind of juice anymore, Cas. Get rid of it before it kills us all.
Castiel: Youâre just saying that because I won. Because youâre afraid. (Behind him, Sam picks up the angel killing sword.) Youâre not my family, Dean. I have no family. (Sam stabs Castiel in the back with the angel killing sword. Sam groans. Nothing happens. Castiel pulls the sword out. Thereâs no blood on it. He puts it down.) Iâm glad you made it, Sam. But the angel blade wonât work, because Iâm not an angel anymore. Iâm your new God. A better one. So you will bow down and profess your love unto me, your Lord. Or I shall destroy you. (Transcript from here.)
Again, Dean tried to argue with the overpowered angel, he tried bargaining, pleading, and appealing to Casâs fondness for them, but it didnât work. Sam was the one who was forced to try stabbing Cas and it⌠also didnât work.
7x01 - Meet the New Boss
Sam: Dean, look, I know you think that Cas is gone â
Dean: Itâs 'cause he is.
Sam: Heâs not! Heâs in there somewhere, Dean. I know it.
Dean: No, you donât.
Sam: No, I donât. But, look, I was pretty far gone sometimes myself, and never gave up on me.
Dean: Yeah, and it turns out that youâre about the Same open book as youâve always been. Hallucinations? Really? I got to find out from Death?
Sam: What was I supposed to do?
Dean: How about not lie? How about tell me that youâve got crazy crap climbing those walls?
Sam: Why? You canât help. You got a lot of pretty severe crap swinging your way lately, and â and I thought âwhat? I thought why burst the one good bubble you had left? Itâs under control.
Dean: What? What, exactly, is under control?
Sam: I know whatâs real and whatâs not.
Dean: Sam â
Sam: Dean, look, we can debate this once we deal with Cas.
Dean: Yeah, you know how Iâm gonna deal? Iâm gonna stuff my piehole, Iâm gonna drink, and Iâm gonna watch some Asian cartoon p**n and act like the worldâs about to explode because it is. Hey. You got to be kidding me. âMassacre at the campaign office of an incumbent Senator by a trench-coated man.â Thereâs security footage. Well, I think reaching Cas is, uh⌠out of the cards. (Transcript from here. And hopefully my slight censoring the last paragraph keeps tumblr from blacklisting this post into the aetherâŚ)
Hereâs a sad thought for you, how often do you thinkâwhile Cas was terrorizing the country as Godstiel and, later, after he walked into the lake and exploded into Leviathan gooâDean thought about how he should have listened to Bobby and Sam and taken Cas out before he had the chance to swallow the Leviathans and become super powered? Probably a lot, Iâd guess.
This moment, as much as I, personally, hate seasons 6 and 7, went pretty damn far to reinforce this Old Yeller principle in Deanâs moral code.
He had to sit back and watch, literally, while someone he cared about went out of their goddamn mind with power while killing and terrorizing people. He had to do that knowing that there was a moment when he could have done something to prevent it. He could have killed Cas when he had him locked up in the ring of holy fire and they were having one of their many breakup moments.
Dean felt like he could have stopped all of this, but heâd been weak and tried talking it out first instead. And you canât convince me that he didnât check the news and every drop of blood Godstiel brought about to the blood on his own hands because of that choice to give Cas a chance to see reason.
10x09 - The Things We Left Behind
CASTIEL: How are you, Dean?
DEAN: Fine. [Cas gives him a look.] Iâm great!
CASTIEL: No, youâre not.
DEAN: Yeah, well, I lost the black eyes, so thatâs a plus. But I still have this. [Dean reaches over and gently slaps the Mark on his arm.]
CASTIEL: Is the Mark of Cain still affecting you?
[Dean flashes back to his dream from earlier, of the blood covering him, the dead bodies lying around him.]
CASTIEL: Dean?
[Dean blinks hard, coming back to the present.]
DEAN: Cas, I need you to promise me something.
CASTIEL: Of course.
DEAN: If I do go dark side, you got to take me out.
CASTIEL: What do you mean?
DEAN: Knife me. Smite me. Throw me into the freakinâ sun, whatever. And donât let Sam get in the way, because heâll try. I canât go down that road again, man. I canât be that thing again.
(Transcript from here.)
I may hate seasons 6 and 7, but holy damn do I love season 10. I know itâs not a favorite among many people in the fandom, but itâs one of mine.
This moment, this burger date of sadness and pain, is a big favorite for me. Dean sees the writing on the wall. Heâs been a Knight of Hell now. Heâs been as darkside as he can get. Heâs, likely, being reminded daily of his time in Hell in the last ten years of his stay there where he was torturing souls. And heâs begging Cas to keep him from returning to that place. Heâs begging Cas to adopt the Old Yeller principle because he sees it as the only option left if the mark consumed him again. And that kills me.
Letâs take another jump forward to season 13, where Dabb & Co really started putting Deanâs Old Yeller principle into text in a heavy, purposeful way.
13x02 - The Rising Son
SAM Dean, wait a second. (Sighs) The kid came through for us today. Jack saved us.
DEAN No. No, whatever that was, that was a reflex. It was a sneeze. Maybe next time he sneezes, he kills us. Good night.
[DEAN hears a clacking sound coming from a distance. He follows the noise to JACKâs room.] JACK Ah!
[DEAN finds JACK trying to stab himself with a blade. The wounds immediately heal.]
DEAN Okay. What the hell?  (he gets in the room) Give me that. YouâDonât be an idiot. Look, A, this is not gonna do anything to you, okay? And B, you⌠What the hell?
JACK Exactly. What the hell am I? I canât control⌠whatever this is. I will hurt someone.
DEAN You know, my brother thinks you can be saved.
JACK You donât believe that.
DEAN No, I donât.
JACK So⌠if youâre right?
DEAN If Iâm right⌠and it comes to killing you⌠Iâll be the one to do it.
[DEAN leaves.]
(Transcript from here.)
Can I just bask in the glory of the grieving widow!Dean arc from the beginning of 13 for a moment? Iâd also like to take a moment to đ Jack for being a wonderful Team Free Will mirror (and mimic) from the word go.
AhhhâŚ
Okay, moving on.
I loved this bit in 13x02 so much. Partially because itâs such a heavy handed foreshadow to 14x20, but also because it shows so clearly how good Jack is at reading the emotions in the room. Heâs, like, three days old at that point, but heâs already having an existential crisis about whether or not heâs evil. He already understands (yes, thanks to jackass grieving widow!DeanâŚ) the whole Monster = Evil = Kill The Thing.
He also shows that he understands the Old Yeller principle. And, for better or worse, he and Dean reach an unspoken agreement here about it. (Again, this is my reading. Your mileage may vary.)
13x04 - The Big Empty
JACK Iâm afraid.
MIA/KELLY Why? Why are you afraid?
JACK Sam thinks you were right, thatâthat Iâm good. He wants me to believe it, and I wanna believe it, too. Itâs just, I⌠Iâve hurt people. I didnât mean to. It was an accident. And I know I should feel bad, and I say I feel bad, but most of the time, I mostly⌠I donât feel anything. And thatâs why I think maybe⌠Maybe Iâm a monster.
MIA/KELLY Jack. It doesnât matter what you are. It matters what you do. And even monsters can do good in this world.
JACK You really believe that?
MIA/KELLY I have to. I have to.
[MIA hugs JACK again.]
(Trancript from here.)
Killing me would be kinder than subjecting me to these feelings so soon after being introduced to this fucking character. Omg. Poor Jack.
Now, yes, a huuuuge part of Jackâs opinion of monsters and the whole âWhat do we do with monsters children? Thatâs RIGHT, we kill them.â thing is because Dean is an asshole when heâs emotional and grieving and deep into survival mode.
But, that doesnât change the fact that Jack is still worried about the fact that he doesnât feel things the way that everyone else seems to. That he has powers no one, including him, can understand. And that heâs killed people without meaning to. Heâs afraid of himself just like Dean was afraid of what he was capable of if the mark took him over again.
13x23 - Let The Good Times Roll
(Sam continues down the hallway while Dean turns to another hallway and approaches his bedroom door. He stops as if to listen to something and then continues down the hall, away from his bedroom door. He enters Jackâs room, where Jack is sleeping and talking in his sleep)
JACK Stop! No!
DEAN Jack? (Dean touches Jackâs shoulder to wake him) Hey. (Jack jumps up, anxious and disoriented. Dean holds out his hand towards Jack to calm him) Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy. Youâre just having a bad dream.
JACK (breathing heavily) Sorry.
DEAN Itâs okay. You donât have to apologize. I have 'em, too. All the time.
JACK You do?
DEAN Sure.
JACK You, um⌠What do you see?
DEAN Well, depends. MostlyâŚmostly people I couldnât save.
JACK Me, too. Over there in the other world, I said Iâd protect those people. ButâŚI saw so many of them die. AndâŚI tried to save them. IâŚI tried, but⌠Iâm sorry. I wasnât strong enough.
DEAN Jack⌠(Dean sits on the edge of Jackâs bed) itâs not about being strong. I mean⌠Look, I donât know what you saw over there, and I donât know what you went through. I know it was bad. But I also know that you came out the other side because you are strong. But even when weâre strong, man, things are gonna happen. Weâre gonna make mistakes. Nobodyâs perfect. Right? But we can get better. Every day, we can get better. So whatever youâre dealing with, you know, whateverâŚwhatever comes at us, weâll figure out a way to deal with it, together. Youâre family, kid, and we look after our own.
(Transcript from here.)
Itâs not about being strong. ITâS NOT ABOUT BEING STRONG.
This is where we veer away from Old Yeller a tiny bit because, again, in the book Yeller had rabies which they could do nothing about.
The moments Iâve highlighted in this post all come back to one motivation. The overpowered person/angel/asshole in question was trying to gain enough strength through supernatural (lol) means in order to have the power to destroy a (perceived) bigger threat than whatever the cost was to get that power.
Samâs demon blood drinking was supposed to give him the power to destroy Lucifer and get revenge for Mary and John and their lost childhood. It went badly and earned Sam the label of monster and falling, at least temporarily, into the territory of the Old Yeller principle.
Cas started lying to the brothers and working with Crowley so they could gain the power to stop heaven from starting yet another apaocalypse. Cas wanted to keep the Winchesters (Dean) safe from being destroyed in a holy war after being forced to fight his brother to the death. Again, this did not go well and lead to Cas succumbing to the Leviathansâs power and dying front of Dean after losing the Winchesterâs trust.
Dean took on the Mark of Cain to defeat Abaddon, the evil that made John grow up without a father. It left him torn between going on a, essentially, soulless killing spree or becoming a Knight of Hell⌠again.
Hell, even the way Jack came into the world was fraught with Sam lying to Dean about working with the BMoL to have the power and strength to defeat Lucifer/the nephilim. Not to mention the months of lying Cas did after he decided that Jackâs power and strength was the only way they could destroy Lucifer once and for all. Again, this ended with Cas dying in front of Dean and the BMoL trying to exterminate everyone including the American hunters.
Thatâs the lesson Dean is trying to instill (hypocritically, letâs be honest) to Jack here. Strength and power come at a terrible cost and if you can solve a problem without resorting to that level of fuckery that things will be better.
And, also, that if things do go bad, that Jack is family and âwe look after our own.â To Dean, this is where the Old Yeller principle kicks in. It is, in a rather fucked up but well earned way, the best option he knows for making sure another one of his loved ones doesnât fall under that monster label. That none of them end up with more blood on their hands or bringing about the end of the world, again, because of their soap opera problems.
13x23 - Let The Good Times Roll
JACK Iâm sorry.
(Jack walks towards the exit and Castiel goes to follow him)
CASTIEL Jack!
(Dean grabs Castielâs arm)
DEAN No, hey, just â just let him go.
(Jack is walking through the woods, banging a closed fist into his hand and punching his shoulder)
JACK You keep hurting people! You keep⌠(Jack flashes back to all the people he has hurt with his powers â Nate, Sam, Dean, the female police officer) hurting⌠(flash to the male sheriff) (yelling) Why do you keep hurting people?!
(Transcript from here.)
This lesson, the lesson of power and strength not being the best answer because of the cost it comes with is not an easy one to learn. Especially when you were born as a superpowered, emotional Winchester by adoption. Life is scary when thatâs the hand youâve been dealt and using the power you have is an appealing balm to combat that fear.
13x23 - Let The Good Times Roll
JACK (moving towards Lucifer, eyes glowing and hand outstretched)Tell me the truth!
(Luciferâs eyes start to glow, his head tilts to the side and he starts speaking)
LUCIFER She saw me when I was scouting out the bunker. She saw me and she screamed, and thenâŚso I crushed her skull with my bare hands. And it was warm and wet, and I liked it.
(Luciferâs eyes return to normal and he looks confused)
JACK Youâre not my father. Youâre a monster.
LUCIFER (yelling) Come on, man! (Lucifer bellows so forcibly that Sam and Dean cover their ears, his eyes glowing red) Okay. I tried with you. I really tried with you.
JACK Everything you told me was a lie.
LUCIFER Because I told you what you wanted to hear, man. So what?! I killed the girl! Big deal! Sheâs a â sheâs a human! She doesnât matter!
JACK So am I!
LUCIFER Yeah? And thatâs your problem. (pointing at Jack) Youâre too much like your mother.
(Transcript from here.)
To me, this moment reads as Jack embracing that black and white Winchester thinking. He has yet (even now thatâs heâs currently dead in season 15) to grasp the concept of people being morally gray. He sees himself as either embracing the monster side of himself from his bio dad or rejecting that side of himself to embrace Kellyâs human side. The side that canât hurt people on accident. The side that makes him more like the Winchesters. Because he doesnât want to fall under than monster label. He doesnât want to fall under that Old Yeller principle. He doesnât want to hurt so many people that he will have to die because neither he or anyone else can control him.
Yes, this moment is FAR more complicated than just that, but itâs definitely part of it.
14x10 - Nihilism
DEAN Sam said that one of your reapers really came through with the assist. Iâm thinking that was probably you.
BILLIE Donât tell anyone.
DEAN You broke the rules.
BILLIE I took a calculated risk. I warned you about the dangers of jumping from world to world. But you ignored me, didnât you?
DEAN Rescuing Mom and Jack, helping out those other folks â Iâd say it was worth it.
BILLIE And just look at you now. Do you remember visiting my reading room? The shelves and shelves of notebooks describing the ways you might die?
DEAN Yeah. Upbeat classics.
BILLIE Well, itâs the funniest thing, but theyâve all been rewritten. They all end the same way now â with the archangel Michael escaping your mind and using you as his vessel to burn down this world.
DEAN All of them?
BILLIE All of them. Except one.
(Billie hands Dean a book. He opens it and then looks at her, stunned)
DEAN What am I supposed to do with this?
BILLIE Thatâs up to you.
(Dean looks at the book again and when he looks up, Billie is gone. He looks back at the book and then looks around, a mixture of fear and confusion on his face)
(Transcript from here.)
Remember what I said about Dean being well aware of the price that has to be paid in exchange for the power and strength to defeat supposedly unbeatable enemies?
Yeah⌠Dean âknowsâ that the time has come for him to call his own bluff. The one from all the way back in 10x09 (not that he was bluffing then, but he didnât have to take action on it then) when he asked Cas to take him out. âKnife me. Smite me. Throw me into the freakinâ sun, whatever.â
We didnât know that was what this moment was until the next episode. But this is the moment when the Old Yeller principle went into effect again. And you can see how much it hurts Dean, how resigned and heartbroken he is over it.
14x11 - Damaged Goods
DEAN Itâs a Maâlak box. [DEAN closes the door to the box. He and SAM are standing over it.] Secured and warded. Once inside⌠nothing gets out, not even an archangel. Especially an archangel.
SAM Yeah, yeah, yeah. Iâve â Iâve read about these, but â but no oneâs ever â theyâre impossible to build.
DEAN Yeah, well, not so much.
SAM Thatâs your plan? You want to be buried alive?
DEAN Buriedâs not safe enough. Plan is, pay a little hush money, charter a boat to take me out to the Pacific. Splash.
SAM You and Michael, trapped together â for eternity?
DEAN Yeah.
SAM You do realize how insane this is, right?
DEAN Itâs the only sane play Iâve got. Michael gets out, thatâs it for this world. And he will get out.
SAM Well, how do you know that for sure?
DEAN Because I do. Because I can feel him in my head. That door is giving. I can feel it giving.
SAM But there has to be another way.
DEAN Thereâs not, okay? There â Sam youâve tried. Cas has tried. Jack⌠And I love you for trying. But none of itâs gonna work.
SAM We donât know that.
DEAN Yeah, we do.
SAM What?
DEAN Billie.
SAM Billie?
DEAN She paid me a little visit. She said that thereâs only one way this ends right. And this is it. This, right here, this box. So, she gave up the special recipe, and all I had to do was the work. Itâs fate.
SAM Since when do we believe in fate?
DEAN Now, Sam. Since now.
(Transcript from here.)
Here is the moment. The one where Dean was at his absolute lowest. When he hit that point where resignation about his fate met having to act on his principles.Â
14x12 - Prophet and Loss
DEAN Well, I will call this a win. Kinda nice. Going out on a high. SAM âGoing outâ being the operative phrase. DEAN Sorry. SAM âSorry.â How sorry are you? Sorry that you fight to keep Donatello alive, but when it comes to you, you just throw in the towel? Or are you sorry that, after all these years, our entire lives, a-after Iâve looked up to you, after Iâve learned from you, I-I-Iâve copied you, I followed you to Hell and back⌠are you sorry that all of that it â it â it means nothing now? DEAN Whoâs saying that? SAM You are, when you tell me I have to kill you. When youâre telling me that I have to just throw away everything we stand for, throw away faith, throw away family. Weâre the guys who saved the world. We donât just check out of it! [SAM pushes DEAN.] DEAN Sam, I have tried everything. Everything! I got one card left to play and I have to play it. SAM You have one card today! But weâll find another tomorrow. But if you quit on us today, there will be no tomorrow! You tell me, uh, you donât know what else to do. I donât either, Dean. Not yet. But what youâre doing now, i-itâs â itâs wrong! Itâs quitting! I mean, l-look what just happened. Donatello never quit fighting. So we could help him because he never gave up. [SAM moves closer to DEAN.] I believe in us, Dean. [DEAN doesnât say anything. SAM gets angry and punches DEAN in the face.] I believe in us. [SAM tries to punch DEAN again, but he stops him.] DEAN Hey, hey, hey, hey! [SAM hugs DEAN.] SAM Why donât you believe in us, too? DEAN Okay, Sam. Letâs go home. SAM What? [SAM pulls away from the hug.] DEAN Letâs go home. Maybe Billieâs wrong. Maybe. But I do believe in us.
(Transcript from here.)
And just like Dean predicted in 10x09, Sam was able to talk him out of sacrificing himself. How was he able to do that? By reminding Dean that they were the fucking Winchesters. They fucked with the cosmic balance constantly and always, always found another way. A way to avoid the Old Yeller principle. A way to live and fight again.
Which, they totally did, but the price of not throwing Dean into the ocean for an eternity of alone time with alt!Michael banging away in his head was their adopted child.
14x20 - Moriah
JACK: Youâre not gonna lock me up again, are you?
DEAN: No.
(Dean raises the gun, aims at Jack and exhales deeply. Jack kneels down and bows his head. Dean, looking puzzled, lowers the gun and walks closer towards Jack. When heâs right in front of Jack, he aims the gun directly at his head. At this moment Sam comes speeding into the cemetery, car tires screeching. He gets out of the car and starts running towards Dean and Jack)
SAM: Dean? Dean!
JACK: (to Dean) I understand.
(Sam is still running, yelling for Dean. The music is getting more suspenseful as Dean holds his aim steady at Jack)
SAM: Dean, donât! Dean? Dean!
JACK: I know what Iâve done.
SAM: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, Dean! Hey, hey, hey! Dean!
DEAN: Stay back, Sam!
SAM: (Panting)
JACK: And you were right all along. (Chuck comes up alongside Sam) I am a monster.
SAM: (to Chuck) Do something. ⌠Youâre enjoying this.
CHUCK: Shh.
(Dramatic music plays)
(Dean cocks the gun. He looks Jack in the eye for several seconds and then slowly lowers the gun. At this point, Castiel also comes running towards the area)
(Dean uncocks the gun and tosses it to the side)
(Transcript from here.)
I have yet to rewatch this episode, but from what I remember I donât think it had completely sunk in to Dean in that moment of choice that Chuck was there revealing that he was invested in the outcome of this showdown between Dean and Jack. In that moment, that split second of choice between following through with what heâd believed for so long for following through with an extension of the order John gave him about Sam back in the hospital back in 2x01, Dean made a choice for himself. And that choice was to believe that theyâd find another way. He decided that when it came right down to it, he couldnât kill his child for making the same bargain for power and strength that he himself had made multiple times over the last 14 seasons.
He was also directly confronted with a similar situation to that from the end of season 6 and beginning of 7 with Cas and the Leviathans, in that when it really came down to it, he wasnât capable of murdering someone he considered family.
And then Chuck had to go and erase any chance they had in following up on that. He killed Jack so that they didnât have a chance to find a way to help Jack balance the power heâd absorbed from destroying Michael or living without his soul.
So yeah, from where we sit now with only one episode of season 15 under our belts waiting with baited breath to see where the rest of this end of the road season takes us, it makes sense that Dean, of all people, would be in the middle of an emotional fucking collapse. And that he would be a huge, whiny, pissbaby douchebag about it because thatâs the Dean Winchester way.
Does that make his behavior okay? No, of course not. But does that turn any of the rest of them into saints? Nope, of course not. And I, personally, wouldnât have it any other way. I like that theyâre flawed and fucked up and keep getting back up and going back to each other and keep trying. Thatâs why weâve had 15 goddamn seasons of this. Because itâs what they do.

Son Prime: wow pete ur a saint
Dad's Favorite: They bought it? Just like that?
Pun-Son: TBH they were way more interested in the group chat.
Like, they legit forgot they were trying to figure out who Spider-Man is. Â

Dad's Favorite: Peter literally everyone in that class is 7+ years older than me. If I had friends do you think I'd talk to you two?
The Live-in: Yes
Because you love us.
You've said so.
Son Prime: hes got a point
Dad's Favorite: Lies and slander

The Live-in: Yeah!!!!
We should get an apartment.
And a dog.
A secret dog.
Dadâs Favorite: Why is the dog secret???
The Live-in: Because I canât have a dog at my apartment.
And your mom is allergic to dogs.
And Harleyâs little sister is scared of dogs.
So it would have to live with dad over the summer.
And he wonât let us get a dog if he knows ahead of time.
Thatâs why a secret dog.
Dadâs Favorite: Hell yes secret dog.
The Live-in: I vote pitbull.

HARLEY, YOU HAVE YOUR READ RECEIPTS ON!
Son Prime: Read: 3:23

Dad's Favorite: Yeah. I mean we Skype and text plenty but we've never been in the same room
Peter PARKOUR: That's wild??

And you two haven't even laid eyes on each other.
H O W?
Dad's Favorite: Let's start with the fact that we live like 20 hours away from each other?
Peter PARKOUR: I'm not even going to grace that with an answer.
Actually
I am
Mr. Stark has like a fleet of planes??
You could literally make a day trip out of it.
Son Prime: hes actually got a pointâŚ
Peter PARKOUR: I almost always have a point.
You two just ignore me.
Because you're assholes.
Dad's Favorite: That's fair
Dad's Favorite: @Son PrimeÂ
I saw this and thought of you
Peter In The Middle: WHAT
THE

IS THAT THING EVEN REAL??
Dad's Favorite: Lol yeah. Saw it at the thrift store
Son Prime: What I want to know is why the FUCK it reminded you of me.
Peter In The Middle: Oh damn.
He broke out the capitals and full words.
He's serious.
Son Prime: Actually it's just a new phone Mr. Tony sent me. Can't figure out how to turn off the damn autocorrect
Dad's Favorite: Why is it that you 2 are geniuses but can't figure out how phones work half the time?
Son Prime: Excuse you this is 1 of those prototype StarkPhones that literally nobody knows how to use yet.
Peter in the Middle: Are you really never gonna let the group chat thing die?
Dad's Favorite: No
Son Prime: Absolutely not.
Peter in the Middle: It was one (1) time you assholes.
Son Prime: I feel like weâre forgetting about the horror show that somehow reminded Riri of me.
Peter in the Middle: I was.
Trying to, at least.
Thanks for the reminder.
Dadâs Favorite: Iâm not forgetting. Ever
Son Prime: Explain???
Dadâs Favorite: Should I tho?
Peter in the Middle: Depends.
Do you want me to show Mr. Stark The Video?
Dadâs Favorite: You wouldnât
Peter in the Middle: Try me, bitch.
Son Prime: Video????
Dadâs Favorite: Donât worry about it
Peter in the Middle: Iâll send it to you later.
Dadâs Favorite: I hate you
Peter in the Middle: :D
Cow mug.

Dadâs Favorite: It says Tennessee on it.
Peter in the Middle: Wait.

Wait.

That was just supposed to sound dumb and dramatic.
Not like something to actually worry about.
Iâll be fine.
Mr. Stark wonât let me go on the super dangerous missions.
Son Prime: i swr 2 fuk im gonna kill u parker
Dadâs Favorite: Yeah maybe that wasnât exactly the best way to start that off.
Also if Ned doesnât already know youâre madly in love with him then thereâs no hope for either of you.
Spider-Son: #rude
One day Iâll get Ned to fall in love with me.
Then youâll be sorry.

Son Prime: nbdy takes u srsly evr
Spider-Son: Fuck off, Keener.
Son Prime: ;P
Dad's Favorite: Hey Peter quick question tho?
Spider-Son: Quick answer.
Dad's Favorite: If you hate Rogers why don't you just not talk to him? Why do you act all polite to his face? Just tell him to fuck off and leave you alone?
Spider-Son: I wish it was that easy.
I mean
It could be
But it isn't.
I have to be polite because we're on the same team.
We're supposed to work together.
I started off kinda rude to him, but Mr. Stark fussed at me.
Apparently what we're doing is bigger than petty squabbles.
Son Prime: uhhh ths is def mr thn a petty squabble tho? mr t wtf
Dad's Favorite: What are you even saying to me right now?? Is dad not mad?
Spider-Son: NoPE.
He just goes along with whatever He says.
Right now Mr. Stark is flying the jet.
Even though it has autopilot.
So I'm left alone back here with Him.
The only other person we brought was Ant-Man and he's asleep so it's just the two of us making conversation.
I hate it.
I'm dying.
Also
I think he doesn't like me looking at my phone so much.
DEAL WITH IT OLD MAN
Son Prime: u rly do snd lik ur bout 2 die. rip n pieces pete
Dad's Favorite: I'm SO glad Tony hasn't cleared me for missions yet.
Spider-Son: I wish you were.
I need someone to hang out with on these.
Speaking of which.
I'm gonna go ask dad if he'll try to teach me to fly again.
Last timeâŚ
Did Not Go Well
Also kinda wanna make Him sick again.
It was funny last time.
If he says no the at least I'll have some time alone.
Anyway I'm out.
Talk to you after we kicked ass!
Dad's Favorite: Take a better selfie this time. Lighting was garbage in the last one.
Son Prime: brng me a robos arm

"Castiel is a fundamental part of at least 80% of what is going on on screen right now" It's called plot device. Cas basically died in seaosn 7 and he was only brought back to 1) cure Sam and 2) cause trouble for the Winchesters and 3) make mistakes that the writers can't have the Winchesters make. Sure Cas is fundamental to SPN, but as a convenient plot device to manufacture drama .
Preface: Since I am kinda dumb about assholes sometimes, I wrote all this answer and then realized this may be an bronly trying to start shit. If not, I apologize, but recent events made me suspicious⌠this is the only ask I will answer that does not make it clear that the Anon loves Misha & Cas, just fyi in case you wanna ask me something. Well, first of all I disagree that Castiel came back in season 7 just because they needed him as a plot device. They could have used anybody/everything to further the plot if they didn't specifically want Castiel; he came back (to stay, may I add) because many, many fans loved him, he enriched the storylines and the spn world and Misha was and is well liked by cast and crew alike. There are literally thousands of ways Sam could have been healed and characters could have caused trouble for the bros, spn writers surely donât seem to lack creativity in that aspect. Additionally, Cas may have caused troubles for the poor bros (who caused just as much), but at least it canât be said that he routinely put his own selfish desires over the wellness of his friends and the world. Also, he is not a plot device in the same way I donât know - Donatello is, and man, does Castiel have a story. A 10 year on-screen history, an even longer history as a character, his own motivations, troubles and themes, his own allies and enemies, his own relationships with the SPN world that sometimes have barely anything to do with the Winchesters. And to all of this has been dedicated screen time, so nope, his presence on SPN is much bigger than âa plot deviceâ. In fact when heâs being treated as a plot device - and he wasnât created as one, given his history- to show how much Dean suffers or to kickstart things such as Jackâs storyline and basically S13 in its entirety, being all over the story but with no payoff, itâs a terrible choice not only towards Cas⌠but towards all the other characters as well. Because the story starts interesting and then ends⌠nowhere. I think it wasnât so noticeable to me in the other seasons, where there was a lot of stuff going on and I am used to SPN writers not really understanding/correctly valuing Castiel, but right now, in S13, itâs terribly clear to me. Maybe I changed, I donât know. Itâs possible. But seeing Cas STILL not being given a decent scene where him and *other character* discuss what fucking happened in the previous 5 episodes, yeah, that pisses me off. Oh yeah, he then got Lucifer. Smh.Dean results like a self centered asshole; Sam, seems like he forgot how to brain in front of Cas; Jack scenes were ok, but surely not what I expected from a family/father-son reunion (titles the characters themselves gave each other, this is NOT headcanon material!!). And the thing is, itâs not that I hate these characters. Not my faves, ok, and surely this isnât the first time I think WTF about them, but reallyâŚ. Dean grieving 5 episodes and then⌠cowboys! I canât wrap my head around it. I just fucking canât!!! Iâm no meta major guys, I could be wrong, but this is how I feel. These are not actions I expect from someone I am supposed to think of as heroic and selfless and world savior. ...and then, bye Cas, nice talk, see you next time your vessel is scheduled for filming. It felt super forced even for SPN ffs. I donât think a 2-3 minutes conversation, fuck it even a simple SERIOUS, HONEST, ARTICULATE line from Dean or Sam to Cas about his death, is asking too much. Maybe I am, maybe if the bros even remotely look like they care too much while Cas is alive and present, it would send poor bronliesâbrains aflame, maybe the writers donât do it as a social service for them, who knows wtf theyâre thinking at this point. I surely stopped hoping and believing in this overused âfamily mattersâ theme. Because when it matters, itâs Cas going all the way physically and emotionally for the others, while the âheroesâ canât even find the words. But hey, at least my sunshine Misha gets paid and has time and means to be his amazing self.

Crown of Midnight: Chapter 3-4
Chapter 3
Nothing fucking happens. Sardines has a nightmare about Cain and later she and Nehemia talk about the rebellion and the kingâs plans without really saying anything, and my hatred for that fucking dog just keeps growing. Observe.
Fleetfoot took off through the pale grass like a bolt of golden lightningÂ
[...]
Dorian had never said what breed, exactly, he suspected her mother had mated with. Given Fleetfootâs size, it could have been a wolfhound. Or an actual wolf.
Are you telling me this fucking dog is a fucking golden wolf?
I will eat this spaghetti-lookinâ bitch.
Nehemiaâs creamy brown face paled slightly.
Why does the word âcreamyâ upset me so much in this?
Nehemia wants Sardines to try to figure out what the king is planning, but Sardines is like ânahâ.Â
She wasnât even sure if she truly wanted to know what the king was up toâlet alone share that information with anyone else. It was selfish, and stupid, perhaps, but she couldnât forget the warning the king had given the day he crowned her Champion: if she stepped out of line, if she betrayed him, heâd kill Chaol. And then Nehemia, and then the princessâs family.Â
But then, literally the next sentence:
And all of thisâevery death she faked, every lie she toldâput them at risk.
Sardines: Hmm. Finding out the kingâs sinister plans and telling my allies about them is a bad idea -- even though said allies desperately need that information -- because that might put them at risk, but saving various noblemen for no reason and put my unknowing allies in danger just so I can keep the moral high ground makes total and absolute sense!
What a master schemer this idiot is, huh?Â
WHAT A KWEEN.Â
People say they love Sardines but hate Alien and I frankly donât get it. Sardines has always been a dumb, selfish twat, that will clearly never change.Â
Celaena swallowed hard. That wordââactââscared her more than sheâd like to admit.
Good self-burn there, buddy.
Chapter 4
Salad (which is my new nickname for Chaol) and Sardines are having a jog.
Theyâd bundled up as best they could without weighing themselves downâmostly just layers of shirts and glovesâ but even with sweat running down his body, Chaol was freezing.
Layers of gloves? What the fuck?
Noticing his stare, she flashed him a grin, those stunning turquoise eyes full of light.
Eat my entire ass, Sarah.
Salad angst about how he killed Cain. Heâs very sad about it. This is what you get for hiring an inexperienced twenty-something to be the captain of the guard. But if we donât make him young itâll be icky for Sardines to fuck him, and if we donât make him captain then heâs just NOT GOOD ENOUGH for Sardines, ainât that right, Sarah?
Iâd say youâre being transparent but youâre already pretty white.Â
He was the Captain of the Guardâhe was bound to have killed someone at some point. Heâd already seen and done enough in the name of the king; heâd fought men, hurt them.
SJM: Hey guys Iâm clearly aware that this is dumb but if I acknowledge itâs dumb youâll accept it, right?
No.
Salad asks Sardines if she ever thinks about the people sheâs killed, and since sheâs the most ruthless and epic and badass assassin the world has ever known, ever, she angsts on about how she never forgets anyone she kills.Â
I donât give a single shit.
Salad angst about how he desperately wants to nestle his dick between Sardinesâ pearly white and hairless asscheeks, but canât because uuuuhhh angst angst loyalty to the king and also Dorian wants to do her and he doesnât want to betray his friend.
Whatever. I donât give a damn. Unlike many other antis, I donât consider Chaol to be a good character and I couldnât give less of a shit about his problems.Â
Listen. You guys only think heâs good because everyone else is pretty much terrible. You cling to him because his mediocrity looks impressive when compared to the literal ass-garbage that is the rest of the lineup.Â
We jump POV back to Sardines.Â
And whatâs this? GIRL HATE? FOR ME?! IN CHAPTER FOUR?!Â
Christmas Yulemas has come early this year.
Since Salad is all sweaty from their jog and his shirt clings to his HOT MUSCLED MALE MANLY MASCULINE VIRILE MAN-BOD, there are DUMB VAPID BITCHES there to check him out.
Celaena could have sworn their eyes had bulged out of their heads and their tongues had rolled onto the ground.Â
Then the next morning, theyâd appeared along the path againâwearing even nicer dresses. The day after that, more girls showed up. And then several more. And now every direct route from the game park to the castle had at least one set of young women patrolling, waiting for him to walk by.Â
âOh, please,â Celaena hissed as they passed two women, who looked up from their fur muffs to bat their eyelashes at him. They must have awoken before dawn to be dressed so finely.
You see, when Sardines ogles Salad or Doriass, thatâs okay because uuuuuuuuh Sarah loves her little baby girl and she canât do no wrong and also she feels TRU WUV (even though her TRU WUV is made irrelevant with the arrival of Ratty to the point where every other love was just useless before that I guess) when she checks those boys out.
THESE GIRLS DRESS NICELY!! TO IMPRESS MEN!! WHILE ALSO CHECKING THEM OUT!!Â
THEYâRE VAPID DUMB BITCHES!! EVEN THOUGH THE ONLY WAY FOR WOMEN TO GET POWER IN THIS SOCIETY IS THROUGH MEN!! LOOK AT THEM AND LAUGH!! SO PATHETIC!!Â
Cool cool.Â
God, I hate this series so much.Â
Salad offers Sardines to help her with her Archer-related business and she turns him down.Â
Hey Salad, arenât you, like, I dunno, the captain of the guard? Donât you have STUFF TO DO?!Â
Sorry, I forgot that this world and its characters all revolve around Sardines and her problems. How silly of me.
They come across Doriass who is walking around with his cousin Roland, who Iâm sure is totally chill.Â
His voice was pleasant enough, but something in it made her pause. It wasnât amusement or arrogance or anger ⌠She couldnât put her finger on it.
[...]
Just the way he spoke told her enough about his history with women.
[...]
As she let Chaol lead her inside the castle, she realized she was in desperate need of a bath. But it had nothing to do with her sweaty clothes, and everything to do with the oily grin and roaming eyes of Roland Havilliard.
Yeah, Iâm sure this guy is totally cool!
We all know that SJM can clearly write very nuanced characters and that this incredibly obvious and clichĂŠ character introduction is just here to mislead us and make us think that Roland is a gross douchebag only so Kween Sarah can prove us wrong and develop his character into someone truly heroic!Â
Anyway, turns out that Roland is the âlordâ of some place called Meah, which doesnât tell me anything, but whatever. Heâs been offered a position on the kingâs council, which is suspicious, apparently, because Roland is more interested in getting his dick wet rather than politicking. This is framed as disgusting, even though thatâs pretty much exactly what Doriass is. Itâs not the first nor the last time SJM makes hypocritical exceptions for her faves.
Doriass introduces Sardines as Lillian.Â
They still used her alias whenever she couldnât avoid running into members of the court, though most everyone knew to some degree that she was not in the palace for administrative nonsense or politics.
So the official story is that a petty jewelry thief became the kingâs champion, then?
Holy shit, this world is filled with morons.Â
I also love how âadministrative nonsenseâ and âpoliticsâ are looked down upon, but when Sardines does her BRILLIANT MIND GAMES, itâs not politics, itâs uuuuh ... Fuck man, I canât even begin to imagine how SJMâs mind works.
Roland hits on Sardines, and her two daddies really donât like that.
Chaol smiledâif you could call it that. It was more a flash of teeth.
Have you considered that I donât care and that this clarification doesnât matter?
She wouldnât mind working with himâbut not in the way Roland meant. Her way would include a dagger, a shovel, and an unmarked grave.
Actually, her way would include a corpse, a staged murder scene, and the hope that he stays hidden and nobody recognizes him for who he is.Â
Eat my entire ass, Sarah.
We switch to Doriassâ POV.
Chaol positively hated Roland, and whenever he came up in conversation, it was usually accompanied by phrases like âconniving wretchâ and âsniveling, spoiled ass.â
So Sardines and Doriass, respectively, though âconnivingâ might be overstating it.
Roland was a pain in the ass, and too aware of the effect his looks and his Havilliard name had on women, but he was harmless. Wasnât he?Â
Dorian didnât know the answerâand he wasnât sure if he wanted to.
SJM: Subtlety? I donât know her.
We switch back to Sardinesâ POV.
Her salary as Kingâs Champion was considerable, and Celaena spent every last copper of it. Shoes, hats, tunics, dresses, jewelry, weapons, baubles for her hair, and books. Books and books and books.
Books? She likes reading? How relatable? You like reading too, donât you, young female reader who is the target demographic for this book? Donât you feel connected to Sardines on a deep, meaningful level?Â
You see, when other women dress nice, theyâre whores and idiots and brainless. When Sardines does it, sheâs just embracing her femininity!Â
Ainât that right, White Feminism?
Whatever. Doriass is there in her room/s when she returns, which she doesnât approve of.
âArenât friends allowed to visit each other more than once a day?âÂ
She stared down at him. Being friends with Dorian wasnât something she was certain she could actually do.
Seems like SJM has been taking writing lessons from Cakeass.Â
Didnât you spend an entire book angsting about how you couldnât be friends with Doriass and then deciding that you would rather stay friends than be lovers? And now youâre back on square one? Are we really doing this again?
Iâm so tired.
âAnd you have so much time on your hands these days that you can spend hours with me again?âÂ
âWell, I have my usual flock of ladies to attend to, but I can always make time for you.â
Dorian is written as a player, but whenever we see him interact with women who are not Sardines, heâs shitty and hateful towards them. But itâs okay though, right? Because those dumb sluts are worthless and stupid, not amazing and brilliant like Sardines! Itâs okay that Dorian clearly doesnât respect any other woman aside from Sardines (and presumably Nehemia, since SJM has bestowed her godly blessing upon her for now), because those other women are simply not worthy of any respect!Â
And obviously, even though Dorian clearly wants Sardines but plays around with other women, thatâs totally fine! Women checking out men though? Thatâs disgusting.
SARAH J MAAS IS A FEMANAST KWAAAN!
Doriass makes it clear he still wants to tap that, but Sardines tells him to fuck off.
Alone in the foyer, Celaena clenched and unclenched her fists, suddenly disgusted with all of the pretty packages on the table.
Eat my entire ass.

"God appointed him (Dean) to look after the Earth and said he was the best guy for the job." Doesn't Sam fit in there, too? God said : Earth will be fine. It's got you. And Sam.
Yeeeah, I know, and I almost put that but I thought that would require a tangent which there was no place for in there. So you get a full-length tangent for asking about something I unfortunately already had a whole list of mental bullet points on, so buckle up XD
Essentially it boils down to my âdean is the centre of the universeâ theory which of course has the flipside that I really do not subscribe to âthe winchesters are the centre of the universeâ because I feel like the cosmic order goes absolutely out of its way to pander to Dean, and Sam is an afterthought. Read into that as much unexpected bitter Sam girl-ing as you like as the other side of the coin of this being one of those ultimate Dean girl theories, it does happen over here sometimes :PÂ
6x09 and 9x11 both place a magical weight on being the older brother, but itâs also a curse in a different way that it singles him out. The burden in season 5 is on him not saying yes to Michael while since at least season 2 Samâs been saying stuff that thematically puts him on the side of letting Destiny happen and fighting it from the inside - as he eventually did with Lucifer - Deanâs always wanted to flip the whole thing over and reject it outright. So his season 1-5 stuff and 9-11 stuff were both about fighting a immense cosmic pressure and rejecting it, emphatically, and ending a seemingly fated and unstoppable thing just by sheer force of will. At this point Deanâs ability to dig in his heels and shape the course of the world around his stubborness is literally equivalent to god-like power. He can MAKE it about Sam, like in 5x22, but itâs coming from him.
Sam obviously gets much more screwed over by being âand Samâ in the season 9-11 arc rather than the 1-5 arc which was properly tailored to them with Michael and Lucifer, because the new template is Cain and Abel. The whole point of that is Abelâs dead, so as a mirror, thereâs nothing left to swing at, which is why I think even some meta writers on our side when we were speculating season 10 contemplated Sam as Deanâs Colette (platonically, as the one who would fill the same sort of role) just because there needed to be something to compare him to and there wasnât even a dramatic re-enactment to look at aside from Casâs stock movie footage in 6x20 :P In season 11 we got Sam thinking he was talking to God but it was actually Lucifer which belatedly used something out of the parallel, but it wasnât a whole lot and of course was like 35 episodes since Cain said that, and meanwhile the Destiel parallel to Colette had been there the whole time.
In Chuck and Amara, both of them got paralleled to Dean, Amara as his dark mirror (in 10x05, Marie promises in the second act Dean becomes a woman) and Chuck literally just mimicking him as if Deanâs pull is so strong it absorbed God into it when God couldnât push the other way and get Dean to treat him with any awe or respect. (Meanwhile: Sam asked him why planets were round or whatever.) Canât remember now what they were exactly but Sam did get some parallels to Amara - mostly being the angry sibling in the face of a rather absolute brother, where Amara seemed to have a younger sibling dynamic if only for âcreateâ has to come before âdestroyâ and I think if I remember correctly without going to look, in the 11x23 resolution her dialogue was more obviously mimicking Sam issues and Chuckâs were Dean issues, depending on which version of the Carver era bro drama you saw it as (I thiiink I saw it as a resolution to 8x23â˛s dirty laundry airing that spiralled into Gadreel then to the Mark etc). Honestly I think Amaraâs anger goes either way, especially since she and Dean clicked so well over season 9-10, and especially when she was fuelling demon!Deanâs rage against Sam and everything he says in 10x03, you can see her anger behind it once you know sheâs there too, as the rationale they came up with for why the Mark makes its bearer so determined to kill their sibling. (It took another season and a half but thereâs finally enough retcon to make the âhow demons workâ errors in 10x03 make sense because you can just blame it all on her :P)
I can see a kind of line of dominoes from the start of the show and the way they set up the dynamic where it gradually puts Dean more and more in the spotlight, especially when Samâs ~out of commission~ as a reliable POV character in season 4 & 6, and just small choices along the way (since Kripke era mind you. Early Kripke era) which end up with Dean holding the emotional spotlight, and a cosmic power to shape events that Sam doesnât really have. At which point the âand Samâ in 11x23 as the culmination of all this, seems laughably token to the dynamic, both in-world and to the fans, like, you canât JUST make it all about Dean, and at the end of the day it will always default back to Sam n Dean against the world, cue musical number from 10x05⌠But somewhere between season 6 and 11, Sam became an accessory to Dean on the cosmic level, because of these unfortunate elements of the way their earlier rounds on the merry-go-round went. So Dean walks in to confront Chuck and Amara alone, and Sam gets the Mark of Cain for 3 seconds without us even seeing the conversation where he decided to do it. And it was pretty obvious Chuck was using him since the whole point was he was avoiding dealing with things properly and Samâs personal development made him so easy to manipulate Chuck probably barely felt bad about doing it, especially when heâs probably got a messed up sense of what people do for him out of faith. (And Samâs the one who has a line back in 9x22 about people doing messed up things in the name of faith >.>)
Anyway, cosmically, Sam spent all of season 9, 10 and 11 left out and on the side as an âand Samâ who at best wasnât falling foul of Deanâs shot at the mytharc and getting fratricided for his trouble of sticking it out with Dean⌠Chuckâs âand Samâ considering the location and circumstances of that conversation where Sam was off watching Crowley eat beer nuts in the bar at the end of the world, honestly sets off a latent bitter Sam girl feeling I didnât even know I had until the end of season 11, and this is probably why I spend 99% of the time all snuggly and warm in my Dean girl cocoon where I feel the narrative has basically never done him wrong in such a way as Sam crawled through Carver era and emerged a strange sad empty moose in season 12.Â
I mean I honestly do not see these complaints now in season 12 in the same way because Iâm trying to figure out what the hell they even rebuild of Sam from and figure 12x04, 5 and 6 did a brilliant job with him, all things considered. And he HAS been more emotionally present and involved in stuff or at least a spotlight is being shone intentionally on him mediating and withdrawing even when youâd think he really should have more to say and Deanâs doing all the shouting for him. Which basically means that at least they are now intentionally making Sam like this, whereas I honestly canât tell in Carver era if they were shooting for one thing and got another, because once this season really began pointing it out, I started seeing earlier stuff in a much different light and retroactively got a lot more concerned about Sam, like the Sam girls had been for ages but I hadnât listened. >.>
(And as a side note, I think this is why Eileen hurts so much that Iâm still equal parts pissed off for the representation issue AND hook line and sinker for the Sam man pain and I see a lot of the fandom outcry between ourselves rather than Angry Open Letter Time involves Samâs feelings too, with most of the coda fics Iâve reblogged so far angrily proving sheâs fine and immediately flinging her at Sam, and my response to the episode was to go plan ahead huge chunks of the Saileen stuff in the long fic Iâm working on too. Heâs been so sad and empty I honestly think Deanâs reaction in 11x04 to Sam hooking up was understated because he was trying to play it cool :P Now I canât help thinking all the progress Sam made is directly linked to how many youtube ASL classes he took >.>)
tl;dr, the way Samâs been sort of moved to the edge of things a lot lately, I think tracks all the way back to the way he interacts with the mytharc on a cosmic level, and the âand Samâ line now genuinely bothers me on Samâs behalf that God treated him as an afterthought to Dean, but when Iâve got my Dean girl hat on, itâs easier to treat Sam the same as that then write all this, which means Iâm part of the problem aaaaah :P
#Asks#i remember all the sam girls tearing their clothes and pulling their hair and gnashing their teeth in season 11#and I was like ... okay...#somewhere or other Dabb era flipped me aroudn#I think it was 12x14#Berens was responsible for shafting Sam in 11x22 and he got a lot of flack from Sam girls on my dash#12x14 suggested to me either an apology or proof the issue was systemic#and it was the fault of the CARVER ERA mytharc#NOT that Dabb was hastily doing clean up#Sam's problems went back waaaay further than that#Berens wrote 11x14 which is the only episode that I felt actually cared about the Sam and Lucifer issue of him being free#Sam analysis#dean is the centre of the universe#11x23

SPN Episode 14 - The Raid - Running Annotations
So much to unpack tonight! Letâs get started... (beware, obviously spoilers abound):  -In the âThenâ segment, holy cow, the boys are such babies! Look at how cute they aaaaare <3 -I love watching the boys in this scene--both reacting in their own ways, but both equally interesting to watch. -âCas almost died!â--Thatâs right Dean! STAND UP FOR YOUR HUSBAND! -Oh, my heart...you can just see Dean rebuilding those walls brick by fucking brick. Someone he loves has broken his trust...again...*sob* -âI watch him die, every night--â âGood.â - COLD, DEAN. Oh the feels! Such painful, delicious feels. -The BMoL compound has a very Alien feel to it. Sterile. Claustrophobic. Iâm sure thatâs on purpose. -âIâm doing this for you!â--Mary...but also Cas (who did bad things for Dean for a good reason). Parallellllllllllls! -Dean thinks his mom wants to get away from them! God, the pain on his face... -Dean desperately still wants to cling to his image of his mom. Dean, sweetie...you have to...you have to let go... -âYou are not a child!â âI never was.â--GGGGGNNNNGGHHHHH! This...this broke me. The tears are literally pouring out of a cavity in my chest where my heart used to be. Kill me, please. Itâd be a kindness T_T -âYeah, Mary, it is.â--He--he...he called her Mary. Oh. Oh my God. Just...oh my God... -Holy SHIT and he threw her out...and the tears in his eyes...GOD...*openly weeping* Moving along from that first six minutes, which just about fucking killed me... -âBut thatâs not your call, is it? Or mine?â--WHO ARE THE MYSTERY MEN WHO HEAD THE BMOL?! -Oh, Sammy...honey...heâs so sad about Mary and Dean doesnât wanna talk... -Hello Deanâs Red Shirt of Poor Decisions! What bad life choices will Dean make today? :D -âI need to hit something, now...â--liiiiike Cas? :D! (Iâll see myself out...) -Poor Sam. I definitely feel his pain--Iâve been in that position of mediator between family members so many times, and itâs always so awful. -âI chose this lifeâ Aww, Sam, look at you and your character development! -So, the barbed wire fence rolling back really reminds me of a fucking concentration camp, and considering I feel like the BMOL are okay with monster genocide, itâs making me even more uncomfortable (in a way that I think itâs meant to?) -Dean calling âSammyâ and then âLucyâ made me jump. Are we trying to reestablish the Lucifer thing here? Or is it just an homage? Either way...I have unhappy feels about that choice. -HAH, goodbrother!Sam emptied the alcohol. Serves you right, Dean, trying to regress to your old habits >.> -Did Dean really just let Ketch in for a bottle of alcohol? Oh, he is in a much worse place than I thought... -âWe treat them all like terroristsâ--GEE ARE WE LAYING THE SYMBOLISM ON THICK ENOUGH FOR YOU YET? -Oh, the sight of Rick Worth--itâs been far too long! He still looks so classy! -Scotch whiskey...is it too far of a stretch that we ought to associate this with Scotland and Crowley, and therefore crossroads demons and bad deals and selling the soul? Because thatâs the vibe Iâm getting here. -Still calling her âMary.â Poor Dean, heâs so hurt... -âYouâre a killer, Dean Winchesterâ--First Rowena, now Ketch. Weâve heard this before, other people trying to label Dean as a killer, even though that clearly bothers him. I feel a character arc (re)surfacing... -And thereâs Dean making his deal with the devil (again). Another parallel to early seasons? Check. -Rufus! Gone but never forgotten :( -Aww, Sam is gonna end up guilted into this because he doesnât want the other hunter to die...fucking Brits. -Interesting Cas parallel with Ketch here, complete with flirtation. The difference here seems to be that Dean is not biting on the flirting front. -OH SHIT VAMPIRE COUNTERSTRIKE! -Oh, Ketch does the torture thing. Fun. And of course, here is where it goes too far for Dean. Memories of Hell, much? -Remember how I said earlier that the BMOL compound felt like the ship in Alien? Whelp, considering I think everyone but Sam, Mary, and Mitch are about to die from a stealth attack by vampires, I think it now feels that way even more so. -The Brits hide from the vamps, Sam and Mary on the offensive. Not surprising... -âHeâs been there for at least a decadeâ âWRONG!â--Lol, the Brits and their Fake News. -The Brits all flinching when Mary beheads the vampire...Iâm getting a feeling itâs going to be like that one Star Trek episode where people voluntarily die painlessly to simulate their war rather than have a terrible, bloody war. The Brits have to learn that hunting should be messy and awful because it reminds you of how much the taking of a life should be avoided if possible (a major theme this season, especially regarding the Luci-baby). -HELLO COLT, MY OLD FRIEND. I DID NOT EXPECT TO SEE YOU SO SOON, BUT YAY. -Lol, Sam is all âdude, I forgot we even dropped this ten years ago.â Good job, boys. Good. Job. -When Mary mentions stealing it from Ramiel and all the pieces from 12.12 fall into place...how they all almost died...oh God, the depths of the betrayal! Look at his poor, kicked-puppy face! Sammyâs walls are breaking. He knows that Mary not only is working with the BMoL, but USED he and Dean and Cas for a selfish reason. Oh man, I canât wait for Dean to find out... -BEHOLD MOOSE, HOLDER OF DOORS! -Pierce, I saw you beinâ creepy over there. Donât think I didnât see you. -â...because itâs...England.â Lol, Alpha Vampire is clearly not a fan. -âIt is time you get off my lawn!â HAH! For some reason, this line fucking tickled me. The Alpha Vampire as a grouchy old man... -That AVD seems kinda useless if you can break it just by stepping on it o_O -Samâs speech: âBlah blah yin and yang blah blah light and darkness blah blah bring balance to the force...â -Awww...Iâm sad thatâs it for the Alpha Vampire...Iâd have loved to see more of him :( But hooray for the Colt being back in action?! -Itâs interesting watching Mick and Ketch parallel the Winchester family in different incarnations--like how here they seem to parallel Sam and Dean and their different ideas and methods concerning hunting. I feel like there is a wealth of meta to be written on this. -LOL SAM, YOU DIDNâT KNOW HE CAME FOR MARY, YOU DUMMY. (Or was he? Maybe he just wanted Dean to make it clear to Mary that he still cares about her...) -Look! Look! Dean is communicating his feelings! CHARACTER GROWTH! -He called her âMomâ again *^.^* -SHE CAN MAKE HER OWN CHOICES EVEN IF HE DOESNâT LIKE THEM. GOOD LORD THERE IS SO MUCH GROWTH IN HERE I FEEL LIKE IâM IN A HUMAN GREENHOUSE! -Ooh, interesting reversal. Sam and Mary saying that theyâre glad Pierce will be tortured (using Deanâs words from earlier--âgoodâ), but when it comes down to it, that actually makes Dean uncomfortable! Look at him shuffling around! Dean is a lot of talk when it comes to being cold, but deep down, he is the most kind and humane of them all. Someone should write some meta about this bit! -Oooh, after Samâs conversation with Mick...the framing of that shot, of Sam and Mary against Dean...I donât think Deanâs going to be an easy convert on this BMoL thing. I wonder...will it be Dean against Sam and his mother? Will Cas be on his side? Gah, SO MUCH TO UNPACK @_@ Overall Thoughts: This episode was a fucking breath of fresh air after last week. I really enjoyed it and thought it showed such significant character growth for Sam and Dean. And the opening scene with the boys and Mary was one of the most emotional this season! I loved every second of that first six minutes. Iâm still not 100% sure where this BMoL plot is going, and I donât know that I like how the Winchesters are slowly getting on board with it. On one hand, this could be the route to a happy ending for them. On the other, it could come back to bite them in the ass in a BIG way. Whatever happens, though, at this point, I feel I trust Dabb to do it well. Iâm so thrilled with the back half of this season (ignoring last weekâs episode), I seriously could do this for another twelve seasons. But for now? I guess Iâll settle for getting Cas back next week!

At the bunkerâŚ
Cas arrived into the bunker his mind going a million miles per hour. He knew Ava wasnât there but it was obvious that her brotherâs knew nothing about her running. Walking into Deanâs room Cas walked to the side of the bed tapping the sleeping man on the shoulder. Deanâs green eyes snapped open jumping the moment he saw Cas standing over him.
âCas! What the hell man! Wrong room and wrong Winchester!â
Cas frowned.
âI am exactly where I need to be. Are you aware that your sister is gone?â
âWhat? She was in her room last time I saw her?â
Cas crossed his arms over his chest taking on his haughty superior expression.
âGo look for yourself if you donât believe me.â
Dean got up quickly walking into the opposite bedroom and no sign on Ava could be found. The bed was neatly made and empty. He quickly left the room walking outside to see his car gone before running back inside.
âShe took baby.â
Cas looked even more annoyed.
âSo your sister who is now in great danger runs away and what you care about is your car? Really?â
Cas said coldly as Sam walked in hearing all of the commotion. Dean looked at Cas clearly shocked by the angels outburst.
âWell Iâm worried about her too now. What the hell is going on Cas? Whatâs got your panties in a wad?â
Dean asked as Cas began to pace. Cas stopped pacing looking between the brothers.
âDo you both want the truth? I warn you it isnât good.â
Dean and Sam both nodded. Cas undid his tie before turning back to his friends.
âSheâs pregnant and Raphael knows.â
Both of the Winchester brotherâs mouths dropped as they looked to Castiel. Dean blinked trying to speak several times before words finally came out.
âSheâs pregnant and the psychopath knows sheâs knocked up? Dude Sam and I had the talk with you! Let me guess you have some mutant sperm or something?â
Cas seemed to wave the comments off.
âDo you realize the severity of the situation? Raphael is looking for her. They consider the baby an abomination. Hall breeds arenât looked on kindly by heaven. Now here she is gone and I canât protect her. Balthazar and Gabriel are looking for her as we speak but I donât feel too strongly on their abilities.â
Both Sam and Dean looked sick. Dean was ready to go on an ass kicking tirade but he knew that wouldnât help. The only thing bringing Dean from his cold and angry thoughts was his cell phone ringing.
While he stepped out Sam looked to Cas.
âYou knew she was pregnant but couldnât have bothered gracing her with your presence? Sheâs been miserable without you.â
Cas sighed.
âThe past month I havenât been able to contact her. Iâve been in the most unfortunate state. Raphael has literally beaten the shit out of me. You should see the scars now. Canât you see anything different about me?â
Sam looked as Cas carefully as Dean came walking back in looking relieved.
âSo something 5'3 with blonde hair showed up to Bobbyâs today driving an Impala. I know where our girl is. Wait whatâs going on now?â
âIâm human.â
Cas said coldly. Both Sam and Dean froze. Cas watched them for a moment before taking a knife from his trench coat pocket and slicing a line in the palm of his hand. Both Sam and Dean watched with dismayed expressions as he cut didnât heal like it normally would. Cas quickly reached for a paper towel that was lying near by and began to apply pressure.
âRaphael did thisâŚhe stole my grace. Said it was my punishment for falling in love with a human and defying his orders on other things. I guess you both can see why I have not found Ava by now. Balthazar and few others are trying to find ways to get my grace back but as you can see nothing has workedâ
Dean ran a hand through his hair.
âSo your out of order until further notice?â
Cas nodded looking even more disgusted.
âSo it would seem. Ava is at Bobbyâs?â
Dean, remembering the phone call he had just gotten off of, nodded. Cas had made it clear that he didnât want to discuss his current predicament at the moment. The coldness in his blue eyes let Sam and Dean to know not to bring it up. If they couldnât get through to him soon enough maybe Ava could or better yet maybe Balthazar could get Cas his grace back.
âYeah. If we hop in Samâs car now we can be there in a few hours.â
Cas nodded.
âLets go. I donât have all day.â
Cas turned storming from the hotel without another word. Dean looked to Sam with a shrug.
âWell we are about to have a fun old trip to Bobbyâs.â
Sam rolled his eyes before turning and walking from the room.
For the first hour and a half of the drive no one said a word. Cas sat in the back seat with a cold glare on his handsome face. Dean and Sam exchanged glances every so often but hadnât said anything yet. Finally Dean couldnât contain himself anymore.
âCas look buddy I get you are worried and I know that is an understatement but I want you to know we will do whatever we can to help you and Ava. Iâm sure between the three of us we can keep her and the baby safe. Wow we are going to have a baby around here soon. We have a new little monster to figure out.â
Cas didnât say anything still. He looked out the window with pain filled eyes.
âIâm not even getting any of my hopes up.â
Cas knew he probably needed to calm down but he couldnât. He knew he had really messed up. In all of time that he had been away he could have made contact with his lover. Cas had heard her prayers pleading for him to come to her. In hindsight he could have stepped away from the war to go to her.
After his grace was taken he couldnât do anything to get to her. He was weak and useless. It had been Balthazar who had gotten him back to earth without injury all the while looking completely devastated with his brothers condition.
Meanwhile,
Ava awoke around noon sitting up in the bed fighting the sick feeling in her stomach. She put her head in her hands for a moment before getting out of the bed and wondering down the stairs. Bobby stood in the kitchen over the stove.
He turned when Ava walked into the room.
âHere I made ya some ginger tea. It should help with that queasy stomach of yours.â
Ava smiled as Bobby sat down. He watched her for a moment contemplating whether or not to tell her that he had called Dean and Sam.
âSo do you know how far you are?â
Bobby asked. He really wasnât sure how to start a conversation like this. Ava sighed.
âCas has been gone for over 3 months and we were pretty active until the point he left so at least three months. Iâm going to save you all of the gross details on how I figured out what was up.â
Bobby chuckled.
âI appreciate it.â
Ava smiled as she stood up.
âIâm going to start some lunch.â
Bobbyâs looked even more pleased. Ava knew how to cook and she did it extremely well. Before she had left to join her brothers, Ava had cooked Bobby enough freezer meals to last him months.
âYou know I have always loved those pork chops with the parsley and those little potatoes?â
Ava smiled walking to the refrigerator.
âHint taken.â
She said softly as there was a knock at the door. Bobby sighed knowing exactly who it was. He stood looking at Ava who wasnât really paying attention.
âIâll be back darlin. Probably some bonehead here about his car.â
Ava nodded with a smile as Bobby walked out closing the kitchen doors behind him. He wanted to keep everything as quiet as possible until there was no way Ava would suspect anything.
Opening the door Dean, Sam, and Castiel stood on the other side. Bobby nodded his usual nod.
âBout time you all showed up. What were you doing Dean driving like a grandma?â
Dean shook his head as Bobbyâs eyes fell on Castiel.
âYouâŚif you were human I would shoot you.â
Cas backed behind Sam quickly. Dean held his hands up.
âBobby now isnât a good time. He actually is human. Raphael took his grace.â
Bobby frowned.
âIs this how Ava got in her predicament?â
Cas shook his head
âNo it was before. I would like to see her.â Bobby sighed looking Cas over. He had changed from the last time that he saw him. Cas looked angrier.
âWeâll see. Looks like you figured out how to change your clothes for once.â
Cas looked down. He had changed from his normal suite and trench coat into jeans and black button down shirt. It wasnât like before where his normal clothes always seemed to refresh themselves now he was like everyone else and had to change. Cas frowned not liking all the human things he had to get used to now.
âThings are different now.â
Cas said bitterly. Bobby stepped aside letting everyone inside.
âWhere is she?â
Sam asked. Bobby pointed to the kitchen.
âCooking lunch.â
Cas, ignoring Bobby completely walked to the door but didnât go inside. He stood watching her with sad eyes. There was his love just feet away not even realizing that he was there. He wanted nothing more than to be able to scoop her into his arms and take her somewhere safe. Somewhere no one knew who they were and could hurt them and they could raise their child in peace.
Deanâs hand on his shoulder brought Cas back into reality.
âIâll go talk to her first.â
Cas nodded going back to his place by Sam as Dean walked into the kitchen. Ava didnât look up from the stove she was standing over.
âBobby lunch will be ready soon. I think I fixed too much though. I am so used to cooking for Dean and Sam. Those two could eat you out of house and home.â
Dean made a funny face.
âAh come on sissy I donât eat that much now.â
Ava spun seeing her brother giving her a big cheesy smile.
âDean what are you doing here?
Dean grinned.
âJust wanted to come check on my sister and niece or nephew.â
Ava pressed her lips together.
âBalthazar opened his mouth to you too?â
Dean sighed.
âNopeâŚCas did.â
Ava looked down sadly.
âCas came to you and not me?â
Dean walked to his sister pulling her into a hug.
âAva I need to talk to you about Cas. Heâs not really himself at the moment. Raphael stole his grace. Thatâs why he hasnât been able to just appear. He feels like an ass. Heâs actually acting pretty emo right nowâŚbet you never thought you would hear me say that word huh?â
Ava was looking up at him from her place in his arms with an eye roll.
âCan you send him in here?â
Bobby stepped into the kitchen at that point.
âI sent him up to your room darlin. Maybe you should go up there and talk.â
Ava nodded feeling worse than ever now. Dean didnât let her go for a moment.
âSteal my car again I am going to really be upset.â
Ava gave her brother an innocent smile before walking out of the room and quickly waking up the stairs. Walking into the bedroom Cas stood looking out the big window and didnât turn
âI suppose you are really angry with me.â Ava said unsure really what to say to her lover. Cas turned quickly. He didnât move to come to her.
âYes Iâm very angry with you but I understand why you ran. I wasnât really the best of boyfriends either.â
Ava closed the door behind her.
âDean told me what happened. It all makes sense. Cas pleaseâŚâ
He watched her carefully for a moment before quickly walking to her. She didnât really look pregnant at the moment.
âTell me what you want me to know.â
He said calmly knowing losing his temper would achieve nothing. Ava looked down at their feet. Cas sighed reaching out cupping her cheek and tilting her face to his.
âAva please. Donât hide stuff from me. I know a lot already.â
Tears began to well in her eyes at the sensation of Casâ hand on her face.
âWhy didnât you come?! I prayed so many times! I didnât know if you were alive or dead! I was questioning everything and being a complete basket case. I thought you may be gone forever Castiel.â
Cas pulled her into a hug nuzzling his face into her hair.
âI heard every prayer and saw every tear. I wanted to be there with you more than anything. Raphael had me locked in some dungeon after he stole my power. I had no way to escape until Balthazar came and busted me out. Ava I would never let anything keep me from you and I certainly will never just leave youâ
He quickly pulled Ava into a long passionate kiss that left them both panting. Ava sighed snuggling her face against his chest.
âI never thought I would have that again.â
Cas nodded.
âYou will always have me. It may not be in normal Cas form but Iâm here. â
Casâ hand fell down to her flat stomach.
âSo we are having a baby?â
Ava nodded looking afraid.
âWhat are we going to do Cas? All of heaven is going to be after our baby. Balthazar can only do so much. Now you donât have your grace.â
Cas gently kissed her forehead again.
âBalthazar is working on getting my grace back. You and our baby will be safe. Have you forgotten that your brothers are Sam and Dean Winchester?â
Ava nodded realizing he was right.
âThat is a good point.â
Cas pulled her back to him putting his chin on top of her head. Neither party said anything for a moment before Avaâs looked up and started unbuttoning the first few buttons on his shirt.
âIâve made love to you as an angel maybe we should try it with you being a human. You wonât have to hold back.â
The look of lust that took over Casâ face made Ava smile.
âThat does sound very tempting. Would that be suitable in your condition?â
Ava smiled reaching up kissing Cas again. Right as things started to get heated there as a knock at the door. Cas groaned annoyed.
âYes?â
He said trying to respond pleasantly as Samâs voice came from the other side.
âLunch is ready.â
Ava giggled at the annoyed expression on her loverâs face as she gave him another chaste kiss.
âCome on. I have to make sure to feed you now. After that maybe we could come back up here and experiment.â
Ava stroked her finger down Casâ chest before following taking his hand leading him down the stairs

To be added to any of my tag lists, just ask <3
"You can't keep me from my other biological brother Dean!" yelling at the top of your lungs, your voice boomed off of the bunker's walls.
"I can if he's an abusive asshole to you!" he yelled right back at you, just as loud if not louder than you had. "As long as you're living with us, you can't just go around doing whatever the hell you want, you're almost fifteen, not eighteen,"
"You're such a controlling asshat!" maybe it wasn't the best idea for you to call him that...or yell even louder than you already had. From the look on his face, he was going to physically pick you up and drag you to your room, so you saved him the trouble and went yourself.
Oh, you wanted to slam the bedroom door as hard as you could, but it was best not to anger the bear you'd just poked at anymore. Who did Dean think he was? You're dad? John never really liked you, you were the mistake child. His sin against Mary. Not like it mattered because he put raising and protecting you on your older brothers, mainly Dean. I guess he was taking it pretty damn literal to the last word and period in the "How to be a douche over protective brother". It was all so damn overwhelming. The arguing. The schooling. Hunting. Seeing your other brother Adam just happened to be at the top of that list right now.
Dean hated him, with a passion. Adam had made the wrong decision and decided to get high off his ass and put his hands on you. God, Dean was furious. Sam had to stop him from putting a bullet in him, knowing you'd hate him for killing your brother. Adam was the one connection you had to your mother, the one thing that linked you to the other half of your family was him. Nobody wanted you in their lives but him. Couldn't blame him. You were the 'one night-stand whore baby'.
Now you sat in your room, thinking about it all. Thinking about how you ended up in this life. This wasn't your choice, but this was your only way to be with family growing up. But you were older now, could take care of yourself. You didn't want Sam and Dean protecting you and being there constantly, you could take care of yourself...right?
Grabbing your duffle bag, you began throwing clothes into it in a sloppy manner. Anything you could fit, you packed. Of course a few guns you'd kept stashed were thrown in, obviously you'd need them for protection. Where would you go? Honestly, anywhere but here. Being around your two brothers really wasn't something in anybody's favor right now. Everything was ready to go, now the waiting began. It took forever for the boys to fall asleep but you were willing to wait for your moment to make a run for it.
The black digital clock with bright red numbers read 3am, they had to be asleep by now. Dean probably trailed off to bed an hour or so ago, Sam more than likely not far behind him. This was it- your moment.
Opening your door quietly, you walked at a fast pace as soon as you had exited your room. But something stopped you. Someone. Cas.
"Where are you going?" he spoke in a hushed tone, knowing if Dean woke up all Hell would break loose in the bunker- again.
"Anywhere but here, I'm going to hitchhike. Don't worry I've got guns," was this supposed to make him more at ease? Well it didn't.
"Come on," his body began moving towards the garage were Baby sat.
"Uh, where exactly?" where was he planning on taking you?
"I wouldn't feel safe with you riding with a stranger. I'll give you a ride," okay, that's nice. But he didn't have a car.
Walking not far behind him, he opened Baby's driver door and motioned for you to get in the passenger side. Dean would be so pissed, maybe that's what urged you to hop in and go, because you did. Neither of you knew where you were going exactly, but he just drove anyways. Moving like his life depended on it once he started her up, knowing the sound would wake Dean if he wasn't listening to music. You didn't even bother asking Cas where you two were going, to be fair you said 'anywhere but here'.
Both of you drove all night long, meaning until the sun came up seeing as you hadn't left until 3am or so. You'd passed out, staying up all night really took a lot out of you, but he let you sleep. The sound of both of your phone's going off simultaneously woke you up. Glancing down a name you didn't want to see popped up, "Sam". While Dean was calling on Cas's cell. Rolling down your window, you chucked the IPhone out into the wind, and casually rolled it back up as though nothing had happened. Your phone had a tracking device in it, Cas just had to turn off his locator app, and he did.
"Where are we?" the clock on his phone read 12pm, had you guys really been driving this long?
"I'm not too sure, but I know the way back to the bunker after I drop you off wherever it is you're going," his eyes looked over at you, then back at the road.
"Truth is, I have no clue where I'm going to go..." your head dropped a little lower than it already was. The feeling of the car pulling off to the side of the road caught your attention.
"I figured you'd go live with Adam, he is the whole reason you're leaving," Cas was right, where were you going to go? Adam could barely take care of himself, let alone a teenager.
"I want to live with him- but I don't at the same time," this was all so confusing for you, what you wanted was clear but foggy at the same time.
"Then why don't you?" Baby was off now, Cas spoke in a calm tone, looking directly at you. But your eyes wandered everywhere but into his.
"Because, I'll never see any of you again. He doesn't even have his own place Cas, I lied to Sam and Dean and said he did so they'd let me go see him. We slept on some stranger's couch, and walked around the streets that weekend I was with him...he was so high," your eyes teared up at the last two words you said. "Dean was right, he's not safe for me to be around. But I still love him Cas. He's my brother regardless of the dumbass decisions he makes," the tears were pouring violently from your eyes, it sucked being torn between two different sides of the family.
"Y/n, Dean isn't saying you shouldn't love him, he's your family. Just because he doesn't make smart choices doesn't mean he doesn't love you any less either. He needs help, and Sam and Dean- all of us just want to make sure he gets that help before he puts you in danger. Talk to Adam, let him know how you feel, tell him how much you love and care about him. We all want you to be in his life, be happy, but your safety comes first," every word he said only made you cry harder and allow his voice to flow deeper into your mind.
"I thought I didn't need protection anymore- I thought I could take care of myself, I was wrong Cas. I need you guys more than anything, more than I need anything in my life," you tried your best to wipe away the tears that had stained your face, he pulled you into his chest and helped calm you back down.
His phone rang once again, he was just about to decline when you held your hand out to answer it. Dean's voice was on the other end, extremely pissed off and rough.
"Where the hell is Y/n, and where the hell is my Baby?" you'd never heard so furious, he didn't know he was speaking to you.
"Cas was going to drop me off somewhere so I wouldn't have to hitch-hike," your face bunched up, knowing he was more than likely even more mad than before.
"And why exactly would you be sneaking out at the asscrack of dawn?" Dean spoke again, a little harsher than before.
"Please tell me you weren't running away?" you must've been on speaker because Sam was piping into the conversation.
"I'd be lying if I said that, and I think we all know that," Cas was looking at you, watching as your facial expressions became more and more tense and filled with worry for what your punishment would be.
"Dammit Y/n. Where exactly did you think you'd go? I swear if you say-" might as well just finish Dean's sentence.
"Adam's," both of them scoffed on the other end of the phone. "But I realized how much I need you guys, not just to visit. You're both a constant in my life and have been since I was a baby. I need you guys to help me from making stupid choices like the one I was about to make. To keep me safe from potentially dangerous situations. Older brothers aren't supposed to give you what you want, they're supposed to be a royal pain in the a- butt," a small smile was on your face, sniffling a little bit you wiped the last dried up tear from your red face.
"Dean, I think we're going to spend the day out and get some needed time off. We'll be back tomorrow if that's alright?" you leaned the phone in closer to Cas so he could speak clearly into the phone.
"Yeah, just don't let her drive, okay?" Dean's voice was once again normal, a hint of frustration was still in his voice but not nearly as bad as it was at the beginning of the discussion. "We love you, Y/n,"
"I love you guys too, buttheads," a small chuckle came from Sam on the other line at your words.
"Brat," both of them said almost at the same time, then the line clicked and you handed the phone back to Cas.
"Where do you want to go? There's a place you can grab some food, you must be hungry," the day must've been in your hands, cool.
"Definitely, can I drive though?"
That was the day you put a scratch on Baby and got the death sentence from Dean...
