#there is no way to consume ethically if there are no regulations in place

Note
the average person doesn't expect you to be a perfect ethical consumer, that's not possible for the vast majority of us. but what youre saying is it's better to do nothing at all and choose the worst possible options (sweat shops, overseas shipping waste, idea/product theft, all wrapped up in SHEIN) than to put even the tiniest effort in where you can.
[they are referring to this post]
What I said was "some people are doing literally everything they can to survive and have no extra bandwidth to spend extra time and money on their purchases, and it is cruel and therefore un-punk to gatekeep punkness and add additional shame to these people's lives based on that fact."
I think it's still a good thing to try to ethically consume; I literally never said it wasn't. I had never even heard of SHEIN before. Rather, I am much more concerned about what I saw as arbitrary gatekeeping based on ability and income.
And frankly how dare you claim that I am supporting sweatshops and abuse by saying that this additional work you are demanding (in this case, presumably, vetting every clothing company you buy from) is not always possible for people. It is not a light accusation to accuse me of supporting abuse.
"How dare you say we piss on the poor", Etc. 🙄 this isn't Twitter. You are determined to enforce moral purity, but you are failing to see the nuance.
Because when I say "no extra bandwidth," I mean no extra bandwidth. This is not the "car shows it's on E but actually secretly it has a lot of gas left" situation that abled people constantly assume disabled people mean when they say they are at their limit.
This is "the car has stopped moving, and to move it I'd have to break my body pushing it." This is "at a certain point, people will hit a wall in terms of money and time and energy, and any energy spent after that comes directly out of their life force."
So the argument "okay but just spend a little more time money and energy actually" is not a valid one.
And the argument "if you are not able to do this specific task, then it means you're not doing anything else to make the world a better place" doesn't exactly impress me either. You said yourself that it is impossible to be a perfectly ethical consumer for most people.
How do you know what else people are doing to resist oppression? How many hours per week until your standards are met? What if someone works 3 jobs? Does that mean it's harder to be a good person if you're poor?? Why do you get to decide what specific avenue of bettering the world is the most morally repugnant or acceptable? What kind of proof of goodness and effort would make you satisfied enough to lay off on the shame?? Who are you helping??
Clothing is a fundamental human need, and some of us have to buy cheap fucking clothes quickly. Billionaires are buying their seventh yacht this month. The people who own fast fashion companies are abusing their workers and putting local affordable clothing stores out of business - and this applies for basically every company with price points that low because governments are failing to regulate corporations to enforce basic human rights.
I have $300 to spend on a new wardrobe as my old clothes have fallen apart or become too small. Do you have a way for me to get a new winter coat, 3 flannels, 10 shirts, 3 dress shirts, new sandals, 10 pairs of pants, 5 bras, 12 pairs of socks, and 10 pairs of underwear within that budget and also definitely 100% ethically sourced, with free returns in case it doesn't fit? Or will I simply have to use the cheap stores?
I have about an hour to spend on this per week. Many mainstream stores doesn't make clothes in my size, and I am now in *year 5* of needing an electric wheelchair and being unable to get one; plus I live up a flight of stairs, so I can't even bring my walker out with me - so thrift shopping is not gonna cover this. Should I continue to wear small and tattered clothing until I have the time, money, and energy to meet your standards?
Did you know there are more empty homes in this country than homeless people? If I decide to splurge on only 100% ethically-produced products, and I can't make rent, and I become homeless, are YOU going to be there for me?? Or are you too busy litigating the endless tiny shames of poverty in your own community?
So I ask you again, are you SURE this is where you want to direct your punk energy?
Because there are a whole lot of rich people relying on people like us punching down and to the side instead of looking up to see where the money is going.
Because energy and time, as it turns out, are limited resources. And I would never expect you to secretly have more than you claim to have.
#original#punk#hopepunk#cripplepunk#i swear to god#reading comprehension website#how dare you say we piss on the poor#jfc 'what you're saying is we should do nothing' - what I'm saying is YOU are doing nothing by enforcing this boundary#you have to give people more credit than this. i believe you want a better world too. and it would be cool if you used your energy to#instead ask 'how do i fight for the people in my community to be clothed and have the time and income to shop ethically?'#or 'how do i support activism that pushes for regulation that could control these companies?'#monitoring how poor people spend money is a supremely Republican thing to do. as is demanding clear moral purity from every scenario.#you want a better world too. you want to demand your peers do better. - fine. good.#but you need to be asking if you have remembered and included everyone's needs when making statements like this.#capitalism is all for forgetting about poor and disabled people and refusing to believe their limits.#shame is a necessary weapon in fighting greed but it IS a weapon. be so careful where you point that shit. enough shame can kill a person#and a lot of us are already defending from it from all sides.#shaming a person who is already at their limit for not doing more is an act of cruelty. think very carefully about what that means please.#i literally don't even know what SHEIN is lol i just know classism when i see it#but I've had friends whose clothes were visibly falling apart with no income and so much so shame so deep in their hearts they were dying#and if they had seen that post it would have made them even sicker and gotten them no closer to the dignity of being properly clothed#shame is a weapon and /you need to be careful!!!!/

i think a good example of how you have to make up your own mind is the n-word. some black people are okay with everyone using it, some with black people only, and some are not comfortable with it at all. you have to understand the arguments, context and history and evaluate how you handle it.
for example; personally i would not ever use the n-word even if my black friends were cool with it because i have no desire to and i feel its not my place. same with f-got, even if my gay friends called each other that i wouldnt use that word.
the same goes for the sex industry. this and that woman in the industry might have a completely different opinion, so you should listen to all, engage with the pro and contra arguments, statistics, and so on. and personally i just have not seen any argument that would convince that there is any scenario where buying someone for sex or consuming commercial porn is not an ethical issue, and even if there was, there is no way to make sure thats how it plays out because its impossible to control and regulate, and then i look at the system behind it, and the premise alone (that sex and sexed bodies are a good to consume, that sexuality can and should be commodified), and i just see no way to ever defend it.

an oral history of vocaloid
ive seen a lot of (very misguided) discussion about vocaloid/vsynth in regards to AI voices discourse, so i thought it would be a good idea to sit down and explore vocaloid as a software, as well as mentioning other software of the same genre, to give people who dont really know much a better understanding
first and foremost: i dislike AI voices that are in unregulated spaces right now. actors who are finding their hard work end up on some website for anyone to use without compensation is devastating, and shows a lack of respect for the effort it takes in the field.
however, vocaloid has a much longer history that pre-dates these aggregate sites. vocaloid software was first released in 2004, and was initially marketed towards professional musicians. vocaloid's second version of the engine, however, decided to broaden the market towards general consumers, pitching it as helpful software to those who wanted to produce music, but didn't have the personal skill or ability to have someone else sing for their music (range, note holding, etc). amateur musicians wouldn't know how to direct someone to tackle a lyric persay, but using software would be easy to learn and they would learn the terminology associated with certain performance decisions.
in vocaloid 2's era, miku was released. miku's voice provider is Saki Fujita, a well respected voice actress who actually does a lot of work in anime as well as video games! the popularity of miku is its own separate post of history, but the explosive nature of it, i would argue, is the reason that vocaloid and other commercial voice synthesizer software ultimately ended up geared towards all consumers instead of just professional musicians. (crypton and yamaha did absolutely still cater to professional musicians, having private or non released banks only for certain companies/contractors to use though).
flash forward, and technology has developed way further. in 2013, cevio released, and in 2017, synthV debuted. by this point, vocal synthing has expanded from just singing software to also include software intended for just speaking (voiceroid by AHS software) and the idea of an AI bank to improve the quality and clarity of voice banks is becoming more feasible.
however, i wouldnt say the developments in AI voices came strictly from this side of things. in fact, i distinctly remember back in the early 2010s, people were using websites with voice models of characters like glados (portal) and spongebob. these audio posts were seen as novelties, and admittedly theyre fun just to mess around with (and people often find the spongebob rap music that yourboysponge makes to be pretty well done!), they do lead the way to better developed technology that doesnt compensate the artist...
so back to vocaloid. the thing about vocaloid (and all vocal synthesizers) is that contracts are in place to give appropriate time and compensation, along with permission to even use the person's voice. saki fujita continues to update miku's voicebank because she is being paid well to do so. this can be said for all vocal synth products. because these companies (crypton, ahs software, internet co, etc) specialize in making these tools and products for it, they have the appropriate knowledge on what proper compensation looks like. a random person grabbing a "raiden shogun genshin ai voice" model has none of those things. the voice actress doesnt get money off of that. its stolen work. AI can be used ethically, but it has to be done with regulation.
im leaving out specifics on certain vocaloids/vsynthesizers since its tangential to this post at best, but im making this so people have a better understanding of the history and intended usage of vocal synthesizer software. thank youuuuu

Survey Programming Trends: Adapting to an Ever-Changing Field
Tumblr media
In the realm of survey programming, the pace of technological advancement and shifting methodologies is a constant. As organizations and researchers strive to gather actionable insights from diverse populations, staying abreast of the latest trends and adapting to emerging technologies becomes essential. This article delves into the current trends in survey programming and explores how professionals can navigate these changes to enhance their data collection processes and outcomes.
1. Increased Use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have made significant inroads into survey programming, transforming the way surveys are designed, administered, and analyzed.
2. Integration of Mobile and Multichannel Surveys
With the majority of people accessing the internet via smartphones and tablets, optimizing surveys for mobile devices is no longer optional—it's a necessity. Moreover, integrating various channels, such as email, SMS, social media, and web-based platforms, ensures that surveys reach a broader audience and accommodate different user preferences.
3. Emphasis on User Experience and Accessibility
Survey programming is increasingly focusing on user experience (UX) and accessibility to ensure that surveys are engaging and inclusive. This includes designing intuitive interfaces, minimizing survey fatigue, and accommodating respondents with disabilities.
4. Enhanced Data Security and Privacy Measures
With growing concerns about data privacy and security, survey programmers are placing greater emphasis on protecting respondent information. Compliance with regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is crucial.
5. Leveraging Real-Time Analytics and Dashboarding
Real-time analytics and dashboarding are revolutionizing how survey data is analyzed and presented. Instead of waiting for post-survey data processing, organizations can now access live data streams and interactive dashboards that provide immediate insights.

Just as a heads up - when you buy fur from any sort of 'ranched' animal, that is (pretty much) always going to be from an animal that was deliberately farmed and killed for its fur. Cases of death by old age or illness are extremely rare when it comes to buying pelts or tails or other parts - when they do happen, the seller will always say it directly in the posted item's sale description or will state in their store description that all of their materials come from animals that were not killed specifically for their fur.
There are no furbearing animals that are ranched that are also consumed by humans except for rabbits, and they aren't used in food for other animals either (with very few exceptions, typically homesteaders feeding carcasses to pigs and using the pigs for their own personal consumption). Carcasses are composted with manure and used as fertilizer.
By the logic you’ve given here, you should have absolutely no issues with farmed animals (and I’m sure you probably own a few pieces from non-’natural’ death farmed animals as well), so long as they are treated well, given the appropriate care, are provided with enrichment, and are killed swiftly and humanely/without pain. There are many, many fur farms like this, and there are many people committed to sourcing their farmed furs from these places - including all of the sellers you added to your response to my original ask. I say all of this because from your original post, you would be saying that the places you yourself listed in your response are not ethical places to buy pelts from. These places do not specifically source their ranched items from animals that died of natural causes or illness, and therefore are selling pelts and parts from animals that were in fact farmed and killed specifically for their fur. As I said, carcasses are composted at most fur farms, so there still is no waste, but carcasses are not being used for food (with the one exception I mentioned, as well as fat from mink being used to create mink oil which can be used to soften/condition leather).
There absolutely are unethical fur farms where animals are treated horribly and where the carcasses are left to rot or sent to landfills. These farms are in fact where almost all tails and fur items from Amazon come from, and you are absolutely right to say that people shouldn’t buy from Amazon. These fur farms are in places where animal protection laws are in fact non-existent, such as China. But there are plenty of other fur farms that absolutely would fit your description of ethical fur. I want to make absolutely sure that you are aware that if you own pieces from ranched animals - unless the listing specifically stated that it was natural death or illness - those pieces do in fact come from animals that were killed specifically for their fur. Also I wanna make it super clear that I’m not like. Mad or anything, I’m just trying to be educational and make sure that you understand where your original post went wrong!
~Signed, a fellow therian with a major special interest in fur/taxidermy/vulture culture who has friends in the industry and who has been part of the industry '^^
I always appreciate correction. I did not mean to imply that I am against fur farms in my original post. I have no issue with the killing of animals if their is no waste which I’m aware that with some fur farms the carcasses are used. I tried to mention that in my later reply to someone that some mink farms have a great way to recycle the “leftovers”. I realize it sounded like I wasn’t aware of these things but I just mean to say I’m against tails sold on Amazon from fur farms in china or other countries with less strict regulation.
“Farmed minks manure, soiled straw bedding and carcasses are composted to produce organic fertilizers, to enrich the soil and produce more food, completing the agricultural nutrient cycle. Biofuels made from mink remains now power buses in Aarhus, Denmark, the world’s largest producer of farmed mink. Similar projects are being tested in North America.” Here’s a part of my original reply where I talk a bit about fur farms.
Sorry again that my original post seems as though I’m totally against fur farms. And thank you again for further explanation! I will always take the chance to learn and to spread helpful information to others so I really appreciate you checking me on what I was saying being someone who knows a lot about these topics!
I also do own 3 pelts that were farmed ethically.

No Breaks
It's been three months after my secret was discovered. Between tests, my new job trying to please almost everybody else, getting wooed by Clef, and general Foundation business as usual, I've never been so busy. But, no matter how busy it gets... everybody makes time for 999.
It's early afternoon, I'm chained to my desk by reams of back reports. Huh. You'd think being Director of Anomalous Enrichment would net me my own intern, but... nope. I still have to fill out my reports and edit/type/transcribe/translate Clef's as well. I'm immersed in the latest incident report, so I completely fail to notice the slow squelch of 999 until he was clinging to my leg. He chirps at me, wanting my attention.
"You need a favor, Squishy Dude?" He produces a stick and a bag of marshmallows. "You want some toasted marshmallows buddy? Okay. One second." I save the report, take the items, and prepare the burning sugar sacrifice. Once one of the sweet squarish treats is speared, I place it in my right hand, light it for two seconds, cool it, destick it, and toss it to 999. He consumes it, blurps, and gestures for another one. Repeat process five or six times.
At this point, the air around my desk smells like fire warmed gelatin and sugar. Just in time for Dr. Myriad to drop by for their weekly check in.
"Do I smell marshmallows?" They ask, eyebrow raised.
"Uh, 999... I think we just got busted." 999 plays bashful.
"You know the rules on fire in the offices. Hell, I'm the reason most of them exist. Toast me up a couple, and I'll forget I saw anything."
"Okay, Older Sibling. You still like them charcoal on the outside, gooey on the inside?"
"Isn't that the only correct way? Mallow me, Little Sister." I hand over the goods, prepared to order. Myriad dives in with relish.
"Oh, that's the good stuff. Tell me Evelyn knows about this trick."
"Been saving this for our next sleepover with Iris and Dr. Rights. Gotta admit, no worries about smores night with me around." Feeling generous, I serve my sibling a bonus mallow. They feign surprise, then... it's gone.
"Better get back to it, Bunny. Reports tend to not write themselves, right? Oh, and I wouldn't do this stuff too often. I've seen what happens when people take advantage of someone sweet like you. I'm not too worried, I know you're just stubborn enough to handle Alto no worries. But, there's a lot more pushy people out there. Just... promise you'll keep this stuff to a minimum. What happened to TJ was bad enough. Can't stand it happening to you too."
"This stays in the family, Older Sibling. And by that... it's between siblings and children only. No excuses, no exceptions. Oh, and 999 of course. Just... pick your moments a little better next time pal, okay? We lucked out it was Myr, not the Big Boss, or worse... the Ethics Committee." Myriad sprays one of the regulation air fresheners, which only makes everything smell like marshmallow coated cherry blossoms. Weird, but nice.
Dr. Glass sticks his head out of his office, and sees Myriad.
"Ah, Dr. Myriad, you're early for a change. I'll be with you a moment." He retreats, only to pop his head back out. "Why do I smell sakura and marshmallow?"
"New perfume?" I lie.
"Olifactory hallucination? Overwork?" Dr. Glass pinches his nose.
"Never mind. Are you ready, Dr?" Myriad winks at me as they walk in the office.

You: The Ethics of Piracy
There are number of contributing factors to Tumblr’s enthusiasm for pirating. We are heavily invested in the media we consume, and it is easy to interpret (sometimes accurately) copyright as a weapon used by publishers and distant descendants of long-dead authors to restrict creativity and representation in adaptations of beloved texts. There are also legitimate barriers that keep us from legally obtaining media, whether that is the physical or digital inaccessibility of our local libraries and library websites, financial concerns, or censorship on an institutional or familial level. In fact, studies have found that 41% of book pirates also buy books, implying that a lot of illegal piracy is an attempt at format shifting (ripping CDs onto your computer to access them as MP3 files, for example, or downloading a digital copy of a book you already own in order to use the search feature).
The interesting thing is that copyright law in the U.S. has a specific loophole to allow for legal format shifting for accessibility purposes. This is due to the Chafee Amendment (17 U.S.C. § 121), passed in 1996, which focused on making published print material more available to people with disabilities that interfere with their ability to read print books, such as blindness, severe dyslexia and any physical disability that makes holding and manipulating a print book prohibitively difficult. In practice, this means nonprofits and government agencies in the U.S. are allowed to create and distribute braille, audio and digital versions of copyrighted books to eligible people without waiting for permission from the copyright holder. While this originally only applied to “nondramatic literary works,” updates to the regulations have been made as recently as 2021 to include printed work of any genre and to expand the ways “print-disabled” readers can be certified. Programs like Bookshare, Learning Ally, and the National Library Service for the Blind and Print-Disabled no longer require certification from a medical doctor to create an account. The Internet Archive also uses the Chafee Amendment to break their Controlled Digital Lending regulations for users with print disabilities. While applications of the Chafee Amendment are still heavily regulated, it is worth noting that even U.S. copyright law acknowledges the ways copyright contributes to making information inaccessible to a large amount of people.
Accessibility is not the only argument when discussing the morality of pirating. For some people, appreciation for piracy and shadow libraries comes from a background in archival work and an awareness how much of our historical archives today wouldn’t exist without pirated copies of media being made decades or even a century ago. But we have to be more careful about the way we talk about piracy. Though piracy is often talked about as a victimless crime, this is not always the case, and each one of us has a responsibility to critically think about our place in the media market and determine our own standards for when piracy is ethical. In some cases, such as the recent conversation surrounding the Harry Potter game, some people may even decide that pirating is a more ethical alternative to purchasing. Here are a few questions to consider when deciding whether or not to pirate a piece of media:
What other alternatives have you seen for legally purchasing, renting or borrowing a copy of this media?
Is the alternative to pirating this media purchasing it or not reading/referencing it at all?
Who does this particular piracy effect? Whether or not you think the creator(s) deserve to have their work pirated, you need to acknowledge there is someone who would otherwise be paid for their work.
If a significant portion of consumers pirated this piece of media, what would the consequences be for future projects? Would you be willing to claim partial responsibility for that outcome?
I’m not making any moral statements about pirating as a whole, just noting that the way we discuss the consequences of pirating has a genuine effect on the media landscape. If you got this far,  thank you so much for reading! It is genuine work to try and understand the complexity behind every day decisions, especially when the topic at hand is as complicated as the modern digital lending crisis.

*********************************************************************
Once again, humans are trying to impose morality and ethics upon an inanimate tool. Speaking solely on AI visual images, the responsibility of imposing morality and ethics should be placed only on the creators and the consumers, not the software companies. If a baseball shatters a window, we do not place the blame on the baseball. But we blame technology for every artistic shift. Movies killed plays, TV killed movies, streaming killed TV... supposedly. Even though I primarily create art to entertain myself, I proudly stuck up my nose with a lot of you at the use of digital technology. But in the end, it is just a tool to learn, create with and share our artistic voice.
Since the first scribble on a cave wall, artist have relied on the knowledge and body of works of other artists. A common and important tool in early art education is creating collages from other pictures to create another composition. Studying and, yes!, copying art and artists also help the artist find their creative voice. How is AI different. An ethical artist will always acknowledge their influences.
The consumer also must bear part of the ethical responsibility. An artist creates an image of a soup can and another buys a can of soup and places it on a table. If you ask either artists, they will tell you why and they will, sometimes at great lengths, give you an explaination. But it is the consumer that determines if one is a statement on crass commercialism and the other has nothing signicant to say.
If you believe AI Art is theft and you are adamant that your art must be protected, are you sending checks to the estate of Monet everytime you paint a water lily or prostrating yourself in appreciation to Ansel Adams each time you burn or dodge editing a digital photo?
Yes, AI Art has some kinks to work out and hopefully it won't take legislation. Everyone loses but the person with the most money and least to lose. There are true masterpieces in entire body of artistic works of humanity. But there are also morally objectionable, ethically murky and probably distasteful works too. Efforts by governing or corporate bodies to define art, regulate its creation or impose any morality on art have always ended badly, Personally, I find AI Art's favorite subject, Fat Babies dressed as Batman incredibly tacky but I happen to feel the same way about Thomas Kinkaid. However, I wouldn't presume to define how they are created or if they should exist. Neither should you.
Hi, Tumblr. It’s Tumblr. We’re working on some things that we want to share with you.
AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.
Here are the important details:
We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner.
We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.
To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
For instructions on how to opt out using the latest version of the app, please visit this Help Center doc.
Please note: If you’ve already chosen to discourage search crawling of your blog in your settings, we’ve automatically enabled the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
If you have concerns, please read through the Help Center doc linked above and contact us via Support if you still have questions.

How does corporate social responsibility impact a company’s long-term sustainability?
In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability have become critical components of long-term success for companies across all industries. As consumers, investors, and regulators place increasing emphasis on social and environmental responsibility, businesses are recognizing that CSR initiatives are not just an ethical obligation but also a strategic investment in the future. In fact, CSR can significantly impact a company's long-term sustainability, ensuring its viability, resilience, and competitiveness in the global market.
1. Building Trust and Enhancing Reputation
One of the most immediate impacts of CSR on a company’s long-term sustainability is the enhancement of its reputation. Consumers today are more informed and conscious about the ethical practices of the companies they engage with. They are more likely to support brands that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. By implementing CSR initiatives that focus on environmental conservation, community development, or fair labor practices, companies can build a strong bond of trust with their customers.
A positive reputation not only attracts and retains customers but also helps companies differentiate themselves in a crowded marketplace. Over time, this reputation strengthens brand loyalty, making the company more resilient during economic downturns and shifts in market trends. In this way, CSR efforts create a sustainable customer base that supports the company's long-term growth.
2. Fostering Innovation and Operational Efficiency
CSR initiatives that focus on environmental sustainability often encourage companies to innovate their products, services, and processes. Whether it's reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, or sourcing sustainable materials, these efforts lead to more efficient operations. Sustainable practices like adopting renewable energy, investing in energy-efficient technologies, and recycling not only reduce a company's environmental footprint but also lower operational costs in the long run.
For example, companies that prioritize energy efficiency and resource conservation can significantly cut their utility costs, ultimately boosting their bottom line. Additionally, CSR-driven innovation can open new revenue streams by creating eco-friendly products that appeal to environmentally conscious consumers. This integration of CSR and sustainability ensures that businesses remain competitive, profitable, and relevant in the long term.
3. Attracting and Retaining Talent
In today's workforce, especially among millennials and Gen Z, employees are more motivated to work for companies that align with their values and demonstrate a commitment to social and environmental causes. By fostering a corporate culture that prioritizes CSR and sustainability, companies can attract top talent and improve employee retention.
Employees are more likely to feel engaged, motivated, and loyal to a company that is making a positive impact on society and the environment. Moreover, businesses that invest in CSR programs, such as volunteer opportunities or sustainability training, can enhance employee satisfaction and productivity. This, in turn, contributes to the company’s long-term success, as a motivated and loyal workforce is essential for driving innovation, improving customer service, and maintaining operational excellence.
4. Mitigating Risks and Ensuring Compliance
The business environment is becoming increasingly regulated, with stricter environmental and social guidelines being introduced by governments and international bodies. Companies that proactively integrate CSR and sustainability into their operations are better positioned to meet these regulatory requirements, reducing the risk of legal penalties or reputational damage.
For example, companies that implement sustainable supply chain practices, reduce carbon emissions, or promote fair labor practices are more likely to comply with evolving regulations. By staying ahead of regulatory changes, businesses can mitigate risks and ensure their operations are compliant with global standards, securing their long-term sustainability.
5. Creating Long-Term Value for Stakeholders
Lastly, corporate social responsibility and sustainability create long-term value not only for the company but also for its stakeholders, including customers, employees, investors, and the community. CSR initiatives that focus on ethical business practices, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility resonate with stakeholders who are increasingly demanding transparency and accountability from the companies they support.
Investors, in particular, are increasingly considering a company's CSR efforts as part of their decision-making process. Companies with strong CSR and sustainability practices are seen as lower-risk investments, which can lead to increased access to capital and improved shareholder value.
Conclusion
The impact of corporate social responsibility and sustainability on a company’s long-term sustainability cannot be overstated. By enhancing reputation, fostering innovation, attracting talent, mitigating risks, and creating value for stakeholders, CSR plays a pivotal role in ensuring the long-term success of businesses. Companies that prioritize CSR and sustainability are not only contributing to a better world but are also securing their place in a future where ethical, responsible, and sustainable business practices are the norm.

Key Construction Industry Trends Likely to Shape the Next 30 Years
The construction industry is undergoing rapid evolution as new technologies, environmental concerns, and economic challenges drive innovation. These trends are not only reshaping how buildings are designed and constructed today but also setting the stage for long-term transformation. As the industry prepares for the future, the trends emerging now will have lasting impacts over the next three decades. This article explores some of the most influential trends expected to define the future of construction and how companies are adapting to meet these new demands.
Sustainability as the Standard, Not the Exception
Sustainable construction practices have moved from being optional to essential. With climate change and resource depletion becoming critical global issues, governments and companies are adopting more stringent sustainability policies. Over the next few decades, we can expect the construction industry to fully embrace renewable energy sources, energy-efficient designs, and sustainable building materials such as recycled steel, bamboo, and cross-laminated timber.
Moreover, carbon-neutral and net-zero buildings are becoming the norm, with architects and engineers focused on designing structures that generate more energy than they consume. Intelligent building technologies, including automated energy systems, will further optimize energy use. As environmental regulations tighten worldwide, sustainability will become not just an ethical responsibility but a legal requirement, forcing all players in the construction field to align with these priorities.
The Era of Digital Twins and Predictive Modeling
The use of digital twins—virtual replicas of physical structures—is revolutionizing the way construction projects are planned, monitored, and maintained. This technology allows construction teams to simulate real-world conditions, test design scenarios, and predict future performance. Through digital twins, builders can identify potential flaws before construction begins, reducing errors and minimizing costly changes.
In addition to digital twins, predictive modeling powered by artificial intelligence (AI) is helping companies foresee risks and inefficiencies. Predictive algorithms analyze vast amounts of data to anticipate delays, budget overruns, or equipment malfunctions, giving project managers the ability to act proactively. With the continued integration of digital technologies, construction companies will become more agile and better equipped to deliver high-quality projects on time and within budget.
Modular Construction’s Permanent Place in the Industry
The demand for faster, more affordable building solutions is driving the expansion of modular construction. Unlike traditional construction methods, modular construction involves assembling prefabricated components off-site and transporting them for on-site installation. This approach shortens project timelines, reduces waste, and lowers labor costs, making it an attractive option for developers.
As modular construction techniques improve, they are being adopted across diverse sectors, including healthcare, education, and residential housing. Advances in 3D printing are also pushing the boundaries of what modular construction can achieve, enabling the creation of complex architectural components with greater precision and speed. Given the increasing urbanization and demand for infrastructure, modular construction is expected to become a dominant force in the industry over the next three decades.
Workforce Challenges and the Shift Toward Automation
Labor shortages remain a pressing issue for the construction sector as older workers retire and fewer young professionals enter the field. To address this gap, companies are turning to automation and robotics to handle labor-intensive tasks. Automated machinery, such as robotic bricklayers and concrete pourers, is helping to reduce dependency on manual labor while increasing efficiency.
Simultaneously, the use of drones for site inspections and surveying is gaining momentum, providing faster and more accurate data collection. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are being leveraged for workforce training, offering immersive simulations that prepare workers for complex projects. As the labor market continues to shift, automation will play a crucial role in meeting construction demands while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
More Innovative Infrastructure for Smarter Cities
Smart infrastructure, powered by the Internet of Things (IoT) and data analytics, is becoming essential in urban development. With sensors embedded in buildings, roads, and bridges, smart infrastructure enables real-time monitoring of structural health, energy use, and environmental conditions. These connected systems help cities improve maintenance strategies, optimize resource consumption, and enhance public safety.
Beyond individual buildings, the concept of smart cities is becoming a reality. Governments are investing in intelligent transportation systems, energy grids, and water management networks that use IoT technology to improve efficiency and sustainability. As urban areas grow, construction companies will need to collaborate with tech firms to deliver the next generation of intelligent infrastructure that meets the needs of a rapidly changing world.
Resilience as a Core Principle in Construction
The increasing frequency of natural disasters and extreme weather events has underscored the importance of resilient design. Builders are now focusing on materials and construction techniques that can withstand environmental challenges. Flood-resistant buildings, windproof designs, and earthquake-resistant infrastructure are becoming more common as cities prepare for unpredictable weather conditions.
In addition to structural resilience, the industry is emphasizing adaptive reuse—repurposing old buildings to extend their lifespan and reduce environmental impact. Retrofitting existing structures to improve energy efficiency and sustainability is becoming a practical way to meet modern standards without new construction. Over the next three decades, resilience will be a guiding principle, ensuring that buildings and infrastructure remain functional under adverse conditions.
Collaboration and Innovation Through New Delivery Models
Traditional project management models are giving way to more collaborative delivery systems such as Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). These approaches foster cooperation among stakeholders by encouraging transparency, shared responsibility, and open communication. With IPD and PPPs, teams can align their goals from the outset, minimizing delays and disputes.
Furthermore, Building Information Modeling (BIM) plays a pivotal role in collaborative project delivery, enabling real-time information sharing among architects, engineers, and contractors. Cloud-based platforms are making it easier for project teams to work across locations and time zones, streamlining workflows. As the construction industry becomes more interconnected, collaboration and innovation will drive project success and improve client satisfaction.
Preparing for a Transformative Future
The construction industry is on the brink of a transformative future, driven by sustainability, technology, and changing workforce dynamics. Green construction practices, digital twins, and modular techniques are just the beginning of the changes to come. Over the next three decades, the industry will also see advancements in automation, innovative infrastructure, and collaborative project delivery models, setting new benchmarks for efficiency and resilience.
Companies that embrace these trends will be better equipped to navigate the challenges of tomorrow’s construction landscape. By adopting sustainable practices, leveraging technology, and fostering collaboration, the construction industry will build more than just structures—it will create lasting solutions for a rapidly evolving world.

Wading through the comments, it seems like there’s a lot of nuance missing in the reactions on both sides. So I’m going to try to word this carefully.
First of all, I am not supporting generative AI, especially for any artistic endeavour. It’s unethical in the way it harvests other people’s work without credit or compensation and the environmental impact is concerning. (I am also aware that there are many other computing processes that use resources heavily, and many other aspects of modern life that damage the environment; one issue at a time.) There are certainly other, more ethical resources out there that can do a better job helping people with tasks that they are currently using GenAI for.
All that said, the sentiment that people should be “embarrassed” for not being able to write an email is mean-spirited and, yes, ableist. There are a lot of people who have disabilities, intellectual or physical, who can write emails perfectly well. There are also plenty of the same who can’t. Disability and neurodivergence are spectra. Executive disfunction, anxiety, dyslexia, processing issues, and so on all exist and can make writing a “simple” email time consuming, difficult or even impossible. This doesn’t make such people lazy, or stupid, or embarrassing. Again, I agree that there are resources other than GenAI that can help with these issues; what doesn’t help is shaming anyone who has cause to use them in the first place.
I have a friend who is autistic. They work in the disability sector and run their own business helping people navigate the highly complex world of government assistance. They are highly intelligent and articulate, and their knowledge of regulations for their field is damn near encyclopaedic. But they struggle condensing their thoughts for written communication. They have to send many emails a day, often highly specific ones (not easy to find a template for) that are time sensitive and, due to the nature of the disability sector here, they can only bill their clients for so much time before funding cuts out. Put simply, they don’t have time for executive disfunction to delay writing an email. It would be great if there were an ethical AI to help them streamline their email writing. That would not be at all “embarrassing”.
So yes, let’s find something better than AI. Let’s just not throw disabled folks under the bus while we do it.
Oh, and because I imagine someone will ask: I am physically disabled, autistic, have ADHD and anxiety, work in a job where I send many emails each day, do not enjoy writing them, and have never used generative AI for anything.
we need to make using chatgpt embarrassing bc sorry it really is. what do you mean you can’t write an email

Actually, I feel like this overlooks the fact that blood banks and hospitals often discard a significant amount of blood daily due to it reaching its shelf life. It should still be perfectly consumable to a vampire, though. A vampire who feeds from this surplus would be addressing a waste issue and therefore adhering to a more ethical moral code than just drinking blood from non-consenting humans - as drinking from non-consenting humans would be the only ethical problematic issue anyway because as soon as someone consents, it's just a blood donation with a different method of donation.
I also always thought it interesting that people assume vampires portrayed consuming blood bags would be consuming those still viable for medical treatment, when there's so much blood that can’t be used due to (valid and important) regulations but is technically still good. Not even speaking about the blood that never makes it into the blood banks due to mistakes that happen, during the blood drawing/transferal/storage, that would make the blood unsafe for medical treatment but possibly consumable for a vampire.
Don't you think that especially established vampire families would have blood banks set up to save those blood bags anyway? Don't you think vampires that are concerned about the morality of their feeding, and are portrayed as capable of aquiring blood bags, posses the intelligence to think this through and only feed on blood bags not needed anymore. Which should also be way easier to aquire in the first place. Just imagine what hospitals could save in disposal costs by giving vampires their expired blood bags.
Honestly, I love the idea of a vampire who only drinks blood taken from blood banks and hospitals, because it so beautifully encompasses someone who's more concerned with the vibes of something than the actual impact of it.
Drinking from someone on the street, barring some other condition they may have, isn't likely to kill them unless you gorge yourself. Taking blood packs? There's always a shortage of blood, and having even less of it runs the very real risk of getting someone killed in a way that is wholly out of your control once you've sipped on that blood. Someone you can't assure the innocence or guilt of, if you're the type of person who cares about that.
Despite that, in popular stuff, I often see discussions of drinking from a blood bank being somehow better or preferable, and yeah. No. The only thing it does is make you feel better while doing more harm, because of that degree of removal. You're effectively drinking blood from someone on the cusp of hypovolemic shock, but since it's not straight from the tap, some people seem to think it's better.
