Ok rant mode activated by that comic because it is so painfully accurate and I'm a professional editor and an English major sooo, ahem. Look at this nonsense. What happened that they started writing like this?
Tumblr media
That's 142 words to describe one effect, and I'm willing to wager half of them are unnecessary. Let me try.
"When any equipping character heals a party member, the total outgoing healing by all equipping party members for the next 6s will be tracked, up to 15,000 healing. After 6s, the next 5 times your active party member hits an opponent within the next 10s, the DMG dealt will be increased by 8% of the tracked healing amount."
58 words. Under half, just by not over-explaining basic mechanics (why list every possible type of attack after saying 'hits an opponent?') and by removing the two effect names, which serve no purpose but to add confusion. As far as I can tell this is functionally identical – and if it's not, well, that goes to show how hard the original is to understand.
The only reason to give proper names to invisible effects like this is if you're going to make some other item also interact with those effects – say, a weapon that does xyz if you're under the effect of Yearning. But they never do.
