I thought of a thing, and decided to post it as micro fiction:

DESTRUCTION AT THE MUSEUM

I needed a win.

It'd been a bad week at work, and I was mad. Three displays that I had spent months working on a piece had been vandalized. Some teenage kids had hopped over the stations and started tearing pieces off of dioramas before they were escorted out. Just so happened that all of the exhibits they attacked had accounted for about 8 months of research and construction on my part. Now I had to repair them, as they had been. Which meant I didn't get to do more research on them. Just the worst part of my job over and over.

I want to be clear I wasn't mad at the vandals. I was mad at the work. Teenagers breaking things says more about their situation in society than it does about “kids these days”.

After all, teens just want to see evidence of their presence in the world. Leave a mark, if you will. If creativity and construction are values that have not been instilled in them, or they lack the means to create, they're going to wreak havoc.

‘Make shit or break shit’ those are the only ways that teens can exert influence. If they're not empowered to one one, they will resort to the other. That is just what being a teenager is.

I don't think it was intentional that the havoc those teens wreaked was In a museum meant to inspire innovation, but the irony was not lost on me.

We had erected a curtain around the damaged displays while we worked on repairing them, But I ended up keeping it open most of the time, because otherwise the heat got unbearable. The work wasn't much fun. Physical construction has never been my passion, although I do have a fair amount of skill. The the main problem was that I hated redoing work. I would much rather be learning something new. But the worst part was that every half hour, 7 minutes past that mark, a tour guide would come through and say precisely the same things, plastering their faces with the same unobtrusive, Stepford wife smile, and waited on the same pitiful laughs from an already tired audience. I had to listen to all of it because I had been instructed not to use power tools while the tour was nearby.

Today the speech was really starting to get to me. I really needed a win.

“Here at the Colorado Springs Tesla Museum of innovation, We have an interactive display of the oldest light switch in its common format. . As you can see, it's significantly larger than those you find in your house, and I can tell you it takes a great deal more force to flip than the one in your bathroom. Go ahead, try it out. The light bulb up there it's attached to, is a reproduction of an early light bulb that we got from Target last month.”

The guide, Angus this time around, paused for the inevitable, polite laugh, that only came when the tour group realized he wasn't going to keep talking until they gave it. Still that never dissuaded him, and he was just gearing up. I gritted my teeth, willing them to move on as quietly as possible. And leave me to another 25 minutes of (relatively) uninterrupted work.

“This design is called a toggle light switch, and was invented by William J. Newton in 1917. Prior to this style, light switches were most often A pair of buttons, like a deconstructed rocker style light switch”

Angus himself had added this joke to the script. I could already see the corners of the his mouth stretching towards his shit-eating grin. Kill me now. Or Angus. Either one is fine.

Placing his hand over his heart, he continued

“This exhibit in particular always moves me, sometimes to tears... When I think of everyone in the world who has used this light switch, not only switches like it, but this light switch in particular.”

‘Here comes the extravagant wind up:’ I thought as I began to gently knock my head against the plywood control panel I was rewiring.

“Hundreds of people come through this exhibit every week. Most of them flick this little switch on and off, the thousands of uses it recives in a month, perhaps even a million over the course of a year. It really makes me feel like part of something bigger.”

And the inevitable pitch:

“ I once had a caveman on tour who-”

“Many Hands Make LIGHT Work!” I blurted as I popped my head around the display.

The tour group rewarded my interruption with a moderate chuckle. Angus, hearing me snatch his punchline struggled to regain composure, unsure of weather to admonish me or I'm trying to regain his footing.

To his credit, he chose the latter. Straightening up and letting out a few guffaws that alone match the volume of the 12 members of the tour group, he drew all eyes back to himself. Thankfully he opted skip the remaining 2 minutes of his speech and ushered the tour group towards their next stop.

“Very good. In the Next Room You will see one of our researchers conduct 1.5 million volts across a special suit of chainmail”

Before exiting the hall, Angus shot me a look somewhere between a flamethrower, and a sniper rifle.

I needed that win. Smiling ear to ear as I powered up the hacksaw, I realized I had been wrong about the vandals. Such an appetite for destruction was not in direct opposition to an appetite for creation, and apparently was not exclusive to teenagers.

my robot’s keeper aka a Tidy Fallout: New Vegas AU

my last gift for you! sorry it’s so late. I saw your post about courier Tidy and I had to do something!! I was so inspired!

Tidy could hear the insistent beeps of ED-E behind them, the mechanical whir stuttering every so often.

“Now is not a great time, ED-E. Keep it together.”

But they knew how prone the little eyebot was to overheating. Especially in a poorly ventilated and dilapidated building like this one. It didn’t matter how good the scavenging was here, what technical goodies could be found amongst the rubble, if ED-E wasn’t going to make it out with them, then it didn’t matter.

And Tidy was pretty sure they couldn’t carry a completely powered-down eyebot.

ED-E's beeps sounded pitiful, resigned to its fate. Or Tidy was humanizing the robot a bit too much. Really, anything was possible at this point.

There was a loud clash of something large and metallic hitting the tiled floor up ahead. Fear froze Tidy in their tracks, their ears straining to pick up more sounds and the direction they were coming from. It didn't take long to be rewarded with the thud of footsteps and coarse laughter rolling down the hall, crashing against their body like violent waves on a still beach. Fiends.

ED-E emitted a low, quiet beep as if to spur the courier into action. And the little robot was right, it was move now or move never again. Tidy backed up slowly, corralling ED-E towards the utility closet they passed a few moments before. If they could just hide in there until the Fiends lost interest or moved deeper into the building, they could make a break for it.

The closet wasn't very large, just enough room for a courier and their robot. But that spelled disaster for ED-E whose cooling fans immediately went into overdrive, rivaling the whoosh of the eyebot flotation devices. The heat generated from ED-E only worsened the situation, even causing Tidy to shed their duster.

It was clear this was not going to work. They were too noisy for the tiny room right off the main hallway. Tidy didn't even want to think what would happen if the Fiends found them. They definitely weren't the Legion, but Tidy knew trouble when they saw it. It only took a month out of the NCR territory to learn that.

So there was only one thing to do.

"ED-E, you need to power down."

ED-E beeped back, brushing it off as a joke. The robot knew as much as they did that powering off and then powering on again was never that simple. ED-E might never turn back on. And then where would they be?

"If you overheat, you'll be gone for good. Power down," Tidy paused for emphasis, wondering when exactly ED-E became more of a someone instead of a something. "I promise, I'll bring you back, ED-E."

Tidy waited for what felt like eons, straining to hear the Fiends roaming the building beyond the ambient noises of an eyebot trying to keep itself afloat. Finally, ED-E played its power down tune and slowly lowered to the floor beside the courier, its lights blinking out one by one.

Relief washed over Tidy, but it couldn't replace the fear at being discovered. So they put a protective hand on ED-E's chassis and waited, breath erratic and jaw clenched.

The Fiends had gotten bored and left hours ago, leaving Tidy and ED-E's powerless body alone inside the building. But they still hadn't moved from the utility closet, not because the accommodations were stellar or they were enjoying the peace and quiet, but because Tidy's fears were realized.

ED-E was not powering back on and they were too weak to carry ED-E to safety.

Tidy had often thought about upgrading ED-E. They had planned to slowly learn each module and component that made the robot tick and make improvements as they went along, hardware, firmware, and software. But now it had to be different. Tidy needed to identify the problems, troubleshoot them, and then fix them with what was available nearby. No luxurious workbench or items that could be sourced over time. It had to be here and now.

Tidy sighed knowing that they had a long road ahead of them, but it was worth it for ED-E.

Besides, they had done it once before in Primm and whatever Tidy knew then as a younger, more inexperienced version of themself couldn’t hold a candle to what they knew and were today.

The passage of time flows differently when troubleshooting. It was too easy to get lost in identifying the problem and finding the correct solution, not because it was fun to “win” and reap the rewards of hours of work, but because no one could anticipate the journey between problem and solution. It was exploration within a set of confines, learning just as much about yourself as you would about the environment and the systems that dwell within. Addicting, but safe. Nothing like exploring the wasteland.

But this situation was on the other side of the bottle cap. Tidy was working against time. Tidy was working against the notion that the Fiends would come back. Or something worse. But mostly Tidy was working against the feeling that they would have to choose when to abandon ED-E to take care of themself.

They were on their last bottle of clean water. Only trail mix that was heavy on the pinyon nuts had sustained them. Their eyes felt dry and heavy at the same time. The situation wasn’t looking great.

But they were so close to figuring it out.

A Programmer’s Digest lay open but discarded on Tidy’s lap in favor of their PipBoy. They had successfully downloaded ED-E’s boot logs and while it was not favorable to stare at text on the tiny PipBoy screen, the logs were infinitely more telling than any article or how-to column that any magazine or book could provide. Maybe with the exception of the Eyebot Duraframe users manual, if that even existed.

After multiple attempts at rebooting ED-E, Tidy noticed that it seemed as though ED-E was beginning to power up. Lights flickered, the hard drive and processor both came to life, it even sounded as if it was routing power to its plasma thrusters. But as quickly as the spark had come, it left. And the logs reinforced this theory. Something was preventing ED-E from completely booting up. Was there not enough power? Was it stuck in some recursive algorithm? A boot loop? Or maybe one of the system checks failed?

As Tidy scrolled through log lines, cryptic wording prevented them from understanding everything that occurred. Weird RobCo jargon. Or weird jargon from people who lived 200 years ago. It was anyone’s guess. But it was enough to see the timestamps and to see the designation of each log line - INFO, WARNING, ERROR, FATAL. Like a weird dance, Tidy followed their perceived steps of how each log line designated ERROR or even WARNING came to be.

All of these messages seemed concerning, but not something that ED-E’s software couldn’t recover from. The log file continued, like the software was just moving on, content to resume its boot sequence. Tidy blinked away tiredness and the strain from staring at the screen for far too long. It would be easy to admit defeat here, rest their eyes, rest their mind. But they knew sleep would not come when the mind could still be occupied with possible solutions, so they pushed on.

It was one word they missed on their initial perusal of the log files. FATAL. It would’ve been so easy to find on a terminal, with a keyboard and mouse. But here in the wasteland, in the hollow shell of an old world, Tidy felt lucky for even seeing it at all.

This was the most concrete lead Tidy had seen so far, though the other issues would probably have to be addressed at some point down the road. But they could think about that after realigning ED-E’s plasma thruster. Which was something they had never done before, but could it be harder than plasma weapon maintenance? They were going to find out.

Tidy set to work rummaging around the room to find tools to open ED-E’s chassis. It was apparent that the utility closet they were in was not one for dismantling and repairing delicate machinery. All the screwdrivers that remained were too large for the job, so Tidy settled on trimming down one of their spare bottlecaps using a pair of tin snips they had found in a toolbox.

It was a delicate process, one that Tidy’s hands were much too shaky for. They could only brace their arm on their bent leg and keep trying because this might be it. Just remove the lower chassis and figure out what a misaligned plasma thruster looks like then figure out how to fix it. That’s all. And don’t lose any screws. Physically or mentally.

One by one, the screws piled up neatly on Tidy’s duster until they were able to shift the rounded metal plate out of its place to reveal ED-E’s innards. They immediately felt elated by the small victory but also disgusted at what they saw. A mess of everything. Tidy was no stranger to seeing the insides of terminals or taking apart their weapons or using the insides of one thing to fix another. But this was something else, clearly designed around things they didn’t understand and maybe the engineers didn’t really understand either.

But at least the plasma thrusters were clearly labelled 1 and 2.

They kind of looked like toasters without the chassis flush with their vents. Toasters were familiar. Now it was just a matter of deciding what features number 2 had that number 1 did not. On the outside they looked the same. So that was good, Tidy reasoned. With a few more screws removed, the plasma thruster housings were off and a bunch of warning stickers sat in their place, faded with time but still clearly visible. As if the existence of plasma wasn’t enough of a warning on its own.

But looking beyond the pale yellow warning signs, it was clearly evident what the problem was. Plasma thruster position 2’s exhaust columns were as straight as ever, a pinnacle of metalwork. Plasma thruster position 1’s exhaust columns were askew, to say the least. No wonder ED-E was prone to overheating. How long had the little eyebot been living this way?

Tidy grabbed a set of pliers and tried to bend the metal back to its original position. Not as flimsy as they looked apparently. And getting any more forceful might result in broken exhaust columns, a situation Tidy didn’t even want to think about since the end was in sight. Defeat at their own hand was not an option.

But maybe less screws was an option? Removing some screws along the base could allow them to pivot the exhaust columns enough to realign them with the housing. And a well-placed piece of steel wedged between the alignment brackets could secure the new configuration in place, at least temporarily until they could get back to a workbench and Raul’s guidance.

With a rush of adrenaline, Tidy’s hands worked just as fast as their mind to put their plan into place and reset the housing and chassis. They hoped this worked. They didn’t have anything left to give after this.

After everything was back where it belonged and three extra screws weighed heavily in Tidy’s pocket, they rolled ED-E carefully out into the quiet hallway. They paused to listen again for any signs of life beyond the scuttle of rodents and roaches. Nothing. With a final deep breath, Tidy pressed ED-E’s power cycle button. “This better work.”

Slowly and surely just as it had all the times before, the eyebot began its initialization process. Lights flickered, the processor and hard drive whirred to life, and the plasma thrusters began to calibrate. Tidy held their breath, afraid the outcome of this startup would be like all the other ones. But the plasma thrusters never powered down and neither did the rest of ED-E. After what felt like hours, ED-E played its startup tune.

Success.

“ED-E?”

The eyebot beeped back happily, as if it had just awoken from a nice nap.

Ideas for Talents in Overwatch 2

One of my biggest fears for the sequel is that talents will only be for the heroes chosen for Story missions. I wanted to see how hard it would be to make talents for all 31 heroes. It only took me a day, so if I could do it I don't see why the entire Blizzard team couldn't.

Reinhardt has at least 7 talents, so I came up with 8 talents for each hero to round it out.

Tank Talents

D.va

Level 1

Game Over- When Mech health reaches 0, mech will fall apart as usual, but each piece explodes to deal 50 damage

Landing Zone- Call Mech produces larger shockwave that knocks enemies back and deals 100 damage

Level 10

Shooting Star- Ram into enemy with Boosters to set them on fire

Micro Flares- Micro Missiles shoots flares that can intercept projectiles in midair

Level 20

Build Up Charge- Mech draws in enemies before it Self Destructs

Disassembly Matrix- Barriers do not block projectiles while under Defense Matrix, enemies covered by Matrix take more damage

Level 50

Defensive Dome- Defense Matrix covers 360 degrees in 7.5 meter radius

Photon Cannon- Micro Missile fires the projectiles from Pilot D.va's Light Gun instead

Zane, thanks to god, was really understanding of me editing the video by myself. I finished his last vlog and while uploading, he texted me, saying:

"I just filmed a quick bonus video, it's a brand deal don't worry. I'm gonna drive to San Diego to shoot some stuff so I'll drop off the memory card."

Zane making my life easier once again. I had no intention of going back to LA. At least maybe for a thousand years. I can’t, after that night. David tried to call me four times but I ignored two of them and missed the other two.

At least my beliefs didn't change. God sent me another so called "clue" and it failed so back to being an atheist, I guess.

The whole week passed really quicker than I thought. I went to some classes, learned I got an A from my multimedia storytelling class, and ditched some classes, for example that boring ass class named principles of public relations. Of course it's my worst class since I'm not a social butterfly.

I was out, doing some paper work for one of my classes when a text from Zane appeared on my phone.

"Babyy, we decided to shoot in Santa Barbara, so can you pick up the memo card from Scott?"

I responded:

"What was he doing with your memo card lmao?"

"He ran out of storage in his card."

"He says hi btw."

I sent a waving hand emoji and then texted:

"I'll call Scott when I arrive in his place."

He sent an okay emoji.

I handed my work from Google Classroom and started packing my stuff. It was 3.34 pm. It was exactly the time I would start my hour and a half road trip to LA, like every other Friday. I head back to my dorm, dropped off my textbooks and laptop, and with that I began my road trip to the one place I said I wouldn’t go for the rest of my life, with my Subaru SUV.

When it’s the decision of the boss, who literally pays for my student loans, I had to do it.

LA traffic is the worst. We literally had zero traffic back in the island. Guam, with over 100k citizens still managed to be the most amazing thing that ever happened to USA while people are praising the City of Angels with it's unbearable traffic and horrible pizza.

I was jamming to some '80s music and then my car, since it's connected to my phone, alarmed me saying:

"You got a new message from..."

The car lady waited a split second and then added:

"David. Do you want me to read it?"

I responded no and got my phone just to see the notification.

"Hey! Heard you were coming to LA? Can we talk?"

I literally threw my phone back to its place, the shotgun seat, and focused more to the road and Madonna.

Maybe if I stop talking to him, he'll think I'm just a piece of ass and stop liking me.

That was my mind set for this past week. Yes, I ignored some of my friends when we got into an argument, but maybe for 10 minutes. I have been ignoring David for the past week, and if he did the same thing to me, I would be pretty pissed.

He loves Liza. I am just trying to help him see the truth, or the bigger picture. Every single person believes they are going to get married, have 3 kids and two dogs in a huge ass mansion by the time they are 30. Okay, maybe not that early, but still.

The traffic finally gotten better and I started to drive a little bit faster. At least I was not in the highway anymore. Highways give me anxiety and that is no good considering I will have another one just about 25 minutes, when I arrive at the house. But my car, most certainly, was not feeling too great. Some noises started to came from the back which I specifically turned off the radio to hear it.

I pulled over and saw a little hole in my tire, which let the air come out of it. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck! Why do all of these things happen to me in very specific times? I called someone that could help and waited for them in a nearby cafe for almost an hour.

Scott, Matt and David texted me, saying: in order,

"Hey, I'm going out to see a film with Kristen, text me when you come."

"Heard you were coming to LA, wanna binge the new Titans on Netflix and talk how bad it is?"

"Are you okay?"

The message was continued with two other messages saying:

"You were suppose to come 30 minutes ago."

"I mean you are not suppose to, you usually come around that time."

I wanted to say something. At least tell him that my car broke. But I know for a fact that he will come up here and pick me up. So I texted Scotty.

"Hey, my car broke in Moorpark Street, I'll probably be around when you guys finish the movie. Just wanted to let you know."

"Oh god, are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. No worries."

"Our film is about to start, should I sent anybody?"

"Noooo, but thank you anyways."

"Okay, I'll get to you after the film."

After about an hour and three minutes, the employee came and started to look at my tire. She explained that she needed to take it back to the repair shop since it looked like something looks like it stuck between my tire and my car.

She jokingly added:

"Hope, it's not a squirrel or anything!" and started laughing.

I just wished it wasn't and nervously smiled.

My car was starting to get it's place in the truck the lady came with and all I did was to stare at it and think of all the money this was going to take, I didn't realise I was silently crying until the truck started moving and I saw my car in the back of it.

The lady offered me a ride but her place was so off where I was heading, I politely refused.

I started to walk, the house was about 30 minutes away from where I was at. A quick nice walk, Pearl. That's good for your body.

I was walking for almost 5 minutes when a car honk behind me, gave me the chills.

It was the white Tesla.

David looked at me from the open window and said:

"Hop on!"

At this point all I wanted was to edit Zane's video so I did get into his car.

"Hi"

"Hey, Scott texted me but I had to look through the whole Avenue to find you."

"You didn't have to David."

"It's fine, it's fine."

We drove back to the house and didn't have a word.

I can feel his little glances from time to time, but I tried so hard not to look at him. Even once. The city lights were catching my eye, not him.

How can silence be this loud?

It was getting dark and after 20 minutes of driving, we finally came.

David stopped the car, which led the Tesla to open the car lights inside.

David immediately turn the lights off and started to stare at me. And I couldn't help myself but look deeply at him as well.

I got out of the car.

I felt a little tear in my right eyeball falling down, I immediately wiped it off with my hand.

I knocked the door. This was something nobody did in this house. I heard come in from, I'm assuming Jason, and went in.

I pull out my phone and texted Scott that I made it home and then asked Jason where the memo card is.

He said: "You should check the kitchen, it's where Scott edits the most."

I head to the kitchen and Scott's computer, with the memo card plugged in, was on the counter.

Me, being the bad bitch I am, pulled the memo card out of the computer which led to his computer warning me with the notification.

David was nowhere to be seen. This was my time to escape LA and go back to Long Beach. I’ll catch a bus provided by my lovely school. The MTA Express bus station is not far away.

The second I opened the house’s main door, Jason from the other side of the room, said:

“Are you leaving?”

“Yeah, gotta edit some stuff.”

“Well, David said he is waiting for you in Todd’s room.”

“Why can’t he, tell that to my face?”

Jason sighed and continued:

“Look Pearl, David might look like a 22 year old adult but he is a literal child. But you are an adult. I know what you are trying to do and I totally understand. But my only advise would be talk to him. Tell your feeling to him, whether it is positive or not.”

These were the only wise words I have heard from Jason. And he looked very sincere.

“Okay.” I said and walked to Todd’s room.

Jason shouted from the living room:

“You are doing the right thing!”

Todd’s room door was closed. Before heading in, I took a deep breath and leaned my forehead beside the door.

I opened the door.

I actually never been in Todd’s room, for obvious reasons. First being, I am just an editor and that was the only reason actually.

A “Hi” came from David but it was quite like mice.

“Hi.” I said.

He was sitting on the bed. I don’t want to be near him so I just stood next to the door.

“So what you wanna talk about?” I said.

I knew what was about to happen but I asked him anyway.

“You know what I wanna talk about.”

“Enlighten me then.” I said jokingly, while sitting in front of David on the bed.

With his classic laugh, David fell to his back and hit the head of the bed.

I giggled and asked if he was okay.

“Yeah, yeah I’m fine.”

We stared at each other for awhile.

“I gotta go David, what were you gonna tell me?” I said.

I loved breaking the mood. David’s face went down.

“You don’t think I like you.”

“I don’t think about it, I know it for a fact.”

“How can you know something this personal about me? Think about that then!”

“David, I am just trying for you to see the bigger picture. I see how you look at Liza every single day. I see how you talk about her, those things are not the things you say about a friend.”

“Because she is not my friend.”

“Exactl-”

“She is one of my best friends. We shared a lot of great memories together but the conclusion not only Liza came, but me as well, we are better off as friends.” David bursted.

“I just can’t think of a single reasonable solution why aren’t we together.” he continued.

“I like you and you like me, but you are sitting here stuck in my past relationship more than I am. It might not show it that well but I really really like you Pearl. And I can’t think of-”

The kiss became a little steamy when he let me sit on his lap.

Ctrl Alt Delete: Chapter 9 (FINAL)

The Professor grunted as he saw that Bones was taking care of the unwelcome guests, dropping his arms and sucking back down to finish Jimmy’s repairs.

“Ahh, yeah, Bones. Cabinet to the left of the Tesla coil array, nice new toy for ya in there. Jimmy has been designing it with me via email before all this happened. Should do the trick.”

The Professor waved his hand in the general direction he was indicating, not even bothering to look up. Bones followed his gesture, running across the room. He threw open the cabinet, eyes lighting up.

“Ohhh, yes! Thank you Jimmy!”

He slung the electric blue guitar over his shoulder, aiming it at the goons. The Dude flew away, her job done.

Grinning, Bones adjusted the dials on his new guitar. It felt good in his hands, almost like it was pulsing with energy, begging to be played. He obliged, the sparks in his eyes nearly mirroring the powerful blasts of lightning that exploded from the head of his guitar. The shock sent Kingfish to his knees, goons collapsing to the ground behind him.

It felt good, TOO good, to watch the people that had barged in here, waving actual deadly weapons at his friends, fall at his feet, helpless. His mind wasn’t in the right place, he knew that. It couldn’t have been after watching his best friend suffer like that. Taking a slow, deep breath, he pointed the neck of his guitar at Kingfish. He had always made a point to never kill. Not for anyone, not for anything. But god, was he tempted to destroy these fish creatures who’s foolish actions had nearly... Bones closed his eyes at the thought of Jimmy never waking up, not wanting to think about it. That moment of hesitation was enough.

“Eaglebones..? Is that you?”

Jimmy called his name from across the room, and Bones’ eyes shot open, a huge grin on his face.

“Jimmy!”

Kingfish snarled, sweeping his leg under Bones, knocking the guitarist to the ground before pulling himself to his feet.

“Well, well. Isn’t that JUST the sorta toy we was lookin for, boys?”

His goons nodded, giving toothy grins.

“We’s gonna need ya to hand over the goods, bub!”

Kingfish reared back, looking like he was about to punch Bones. He flinched back, anticipating the hit. But one never came. Instead, he looked up to see hundreds of tiny missiles pummeling Kingfish and his goons. They stumbled back, covering their faces with their fins.

Jimmy stepped forward, looming over Bones like an enraged mother bear protecting her cub.

“You’d better not touch my friend! Get back, you rotten fish!”

Kingfish growled, finally realizing he’d met his match.

“Alright, The Aquabats. You’s won this time! But I’ll be back, ya hear?! C’mon boys, lets scram!”

As the man-fish fled, Jimmy leaned over, a soft smile on his face as he offered Bones a hand. He grunted as Jimmy helped him up, hopping a little on one foot. His left ankle was sore where Kingfish had kicked him; it was probably sprained, or worse.

Jimmy’s eyes immediately grew huge, and he swept Bones off his feet, gently carrying him to a nearby table.

Bones laughed, glad to have his friend back, his relief washing away every last ounce of anger.

“Jimmy, I’m alright, I’m used to getting hurt. Crash landing on me did WAY worse than this!”

Jimmy scowled, not meeting Bones’ gaze.

“Yeah, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take care of yourself! Now, sit still so I can scan your foot!”

Bones obliged, though not without rolling his eyes. As Jimmy fussed over Bones’ foot, the Professor was running scans on Jimmy.

“Alright. Looks like he’s running at full capacity! And he seems to have retained all of his memories! I’d call this a win!”

Bones couldn’t hide the relief on his face.

“I even made a point of reinstalling the functions he’d removed.”

Professor shot a sideways glance at Bones.

“Are you SURE you don’t want me to update his Priorities Database? It seems like it would be inconvenient to loose your getaway driver if this were to ever happen again.

Jimmy froze mid-motion; he’d just started wrapping Bones’ ankle in an ace bandage. Bones could see the anguish on his face at the though of putting anyone before his friends, at the mere IDEA that he could overwrite a moment with them.

Bones adamantly shook us head.

“Yeah, I’m sure. Jimmy’s just perfect the way he is. Right Pal?”

He cracked a smile as he watched Jimmy visibly relax. The Professor shrugged, adjusting his lab coat.

“Suit yourself! Anyhow... I wonder where the others got off to? It’s not like them to abandon a fight...”

Bones and Jimmy both tended up this time, making terrified eye contact. It was at that precise moment that Crash lived up to his name, falling through an air duct in the ceiling. He was followed by Ricky, the Commander, and Sunny, who landed comfortable on top of the pile of Aquabats.

The boys groaned collectively, rubbing their heads as they untangled themselves. Sunny, on the other hand, bounced off with a giggle.

“That was fun! Now, where are those nasty fish guys?! I’ve got a thing or two I wanna say to ‘em!”

She raised her fists, looking around for their foe. Sunny seemed surprised when she realized they were nowhere to be seen.

“... Huh?”

She cocked her head, turning to the Professor.

“Where’d they go?”

The Professor shrugged again, examining the corrupted hard drive he’d pulled out of Jimmy.

“Beats me. They just kinda ran off. I think the robot scared them off?”

Jimmy blushed as Sunny turned to him, eyes sparkling.

“Wow, Jimmy! That’s rad! I wish me and the Commander and the others would’ve gotten to see!”

She giggled, offering him a high-five, to which he gladly obliged.

“Aww, you guys...”

Commander huffed, still rubbing his head.

“Are you all better now, robot? No more loose screws up in the ole noggin?”

Jimmy beamed at the Professor and Bones, giving the Commander a thumbs up.

“I’ve never been better, Commander!”

“Good to hear, Jimmy! Now, Aquabats! Help clean up the Professor’s lab while I take a nap!”

Crash and Ricky groaned, but Bones shrugged, having expected it. Sunny just seemed glad to be around everyone a little longer. Jimmy’s smile didn’t fade the entire time they were cleaning up, not showing the slightest hint of disappearing for several hours even after that.

HELLO VIKING

SABRINA

Zipping myself into my heels I stood up straight, walking over to my full length mirror. I checked myself out head to toe looking for anything that needs to be fixed. Today is my birthday and my mejor amiga threw me a party and I’m very anxious to see what the hell she planned for me. She told to me to show up at ten o’clock exactly because she had some last minute touches to put on the party. I didn’t even understand why she said that but I just agreed to arriving at the specified time.

I’m on a new quest to have my first child. I’ve been in and out of relationships since my college days but I’m ready for a change. Finding a guy that is ideal for myself is not easy whatsoever. But recently I’ve gotten to know somebody who seems very promising to be my donor recipient. Since we’ve been getting along so well I invited him to the party tonight as my date. We’ve been hanging out over the past couple of months to really get to know one another. Corey, my dear friend, is supposed to be in attendance at my party tonight being that I asked him if he would meet Julian. Corey was against it at first but after begging and pleading, he agreed to the meeting.

The alarm on my phone went off telling me it’s time to get going. With one last glance at myself I walked over to my dresser to spritz on a little more perfume. I touched bases with my chest, wrists and the back of my neck. Cutting the lights in the bedroom I headed out the door. Time for a fun night out!

“So where is this guy?” Corey asked, throwing back a shot with me. I searched the room looking for Julian not seeing him anywhere.

“He’s here somewhere. Estás pasando un buen rato? You look like you want to say something but you’re holding back because I asked you to meet this guy.” I said, pouring myself another shot.

“I’m good. I just want to meet your new man that’s all. So what’s he like?” Corey asked, pouring himself two more shots. He threw back both drinks and gripped both in his hands giving me a stern look.

“What?” I dropped my shoulders and fluffed up my hair a little. This liquor, whatever it is, is making me burn the fuck up! The dress is tight as hell and my thick ass hair is giving me even more trouble than my outfit. Corey shook his head and pointed to the other side of the room. I followed his hand spotting Julian emerging from another room. I laughed to myself seeing him trying to fight off Kelly who is clearly drunk beyond repair. He managed to sneak away while she had her back turned and make it over to where Corey and I stood.

“I was kidnapped I swear. I stepped away for two minutes to look for the bathroom and next thing I know I’m fighting off an adult size piranha. Is she always like that?” Julian chuckled, looking back to see if Kelly was anywhere nearby.

“Who Kelly? Hell yeah. It’s worse when she’s drunk. Julian, I want to introduce you to someone. This is Corey...Corey this is Julian.” I opened the floor up to them both waiting to see what will happen.

Coughing lowly I nudged Corey to at least give him a head nod as a sign of respect. Corey set the glasses on the counter and reached forward shaking Julian’s extended hand. “Nice to meet you bruh..” he said with a slur.

“Good to meet you too man. Sabrina tells me you two are real close.” Julian cleared his throat not taking his eyes off of Corey. The amount of dominance and pride I’m sensing right now is insane. I’m not sure if this was a good idea or not.

“Oh yeah, extremely..isn’t that right Bri?” Corey roped me in for a strong side hug. I threw one arm behind his back, stabbing him with my nails. He ignored what I did and kissed my forehead with no shame at all. “Nah but really we are close. We’ve been friends since we were kids so she’s like family to me a little bit.” Corey squeezed my shoulders and arms a bit, staring Julian down like he’s the black sheep of the party. He stuck around for maybe ten minutes and took off somewhere else.

When it was just the two of us I felt like I needed to apologize on Corey’s behalf. “He’s…” I can't even describe Corey in a short amount of words like I really want to.

“Protective? You sure he’s not secretly feeling you and just not saying anything?” Julian assumed, now standing beside me.

“What? No. No, Corey and I are friends that’s it. We look out for each other but I promise you have nothing to worry about.” I assured. “Let me introduce you to some of my other friends.” Grabbing his hand I walked him over to Ravyn and my other girls.

I know Corey wouldn’t purposely sabotage what I have going with Julian no matter what he’s feeling. I can only hope for the best.

COREY

“Come on handsome it’s time..” Ravyn pushed me from behind over to where everyone was heading. I stumbled behind everybody going out back. I saw Lori and her new man standing all close in front of her cake. He was all in her ear making her laugh and holding her close. Everyone gathered around singing Bri happy birthday with drunken smiles on their faces.

I stayed somewhat in the shadows, swaying along to the sound of their voices with a bottle in my hand. Once the main event of the night was over I went back inside. I’m drunk off my ass and once I spotted the perfect place to chill until I’m sober enough to drive, I was set. These last couple of months have been kind of hectic. I’ve been traveling a lot more for work but the gigs have been A1. Over the last three weeks or so I’ve had four design companies, two modeling agencies, and Tesla contact me to work for them. I accepted every job knowing damn well those kind of opportunities don’t happen to me everyday.

I haven’t talked much to Bri about her new venture and quite frankly it’s hard for me to even address the topic. The only way we talk about this baby thing is if she brings up the subject first. Of course I wonder how it’s going and what’s been going on but I just can’t fathom asking her about the shit myself. Bri turns thirty as of tomorrow afternoon at 2pm, officially. My guess would be that she’s feeling the pressure of that whole biological clock bullshit. I’ve been telling that girl to just take it slow and wait for her time to come but she’s so hardheaded!

I worry for Sabrina every day. She’s street smart and book smart, she’s got a ton of life experience and she’s about her shit. She’s a great girl but she’s too into the hype of settling down. I don’t doubt for a second that she won’t make a good mother because I know she will. I just don’t like when she’s in a rush to accomplish certain goals. All I’ve ever told her is to have patience and trust the path life has for her. But Sabrina is stubborn so there’s only so much advice she will actually listen to.

Getting up from the chair I did a little stretch and took my ass to the bathroom. I locked the door behind me and glanced around the room carefully. “Bri..you’ve got some weird ass friends.” Shaking my head at the volume of crystals, buddha references, and chakra decor I walked over to the sink to wash my hands first. After I took a quick piss and washed my hands again I spotted a cup on the counter.

“What the fuck..” I slurred. Moving closer I picked the cup realizing it was a specimen cup. “Ohh, it’s little Julian Jr in here..” Chuckling to myself at what I was holding I sat down on the toilet seat lid and examined the label. “Congrats Julian..you’re gonna be a daddy..well sort of..” Shaking my head quickly I twisted my hat around to face the back.

I grabbed one of the buddha statues and set it on my right knee leaving space for the cup. “Little Julian..I wish upon you great success in life. May you look just like Bri and look nothing like yo ugly ass father..” I joked. Stupidly I dropped the cup on the floor watching the contents spill out on the purple rug. I thanked the man above for letting this nasty shit spill away from my sneakers.

“Oh shit!” I panicked, wondering how the hell I’m gonna explain this. A knock on the door scared me so I had to think of something quick to get whoever it is away from this room. “Go away! I’m gonna be a while!” I shouted waiting to see if they would stay or leave. Pacing the bathroom floor with my hands on my head I stared at the floor seeing Julian’s little swimmers just sit there. “Bri is gonna kill me..aw fuck Bri is gonna kill me..” Exhaling sharply I thought of a plan to fix this mess.

Suddenly I came up with the only logical explanation that will solve my problems tonight. Taking a seat again I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my contacts. Stopping at a random name I called up one of my home girls knowing she would answer.

“It’s been a minute. How are you handsome?” Eva spoke off bat.

“Wassup mama, I’m good. Yo I need a favor and please don’t ask me any questions.” I said in a rush. Glancing at the time I slapped myself in the head at how late it’s getting.

“Whatever you need I’m your girl. What’s going on?” Eva questioned softly.

“Facetime me and I’ll tell you the rest.” I unbuckled my belt waiting for this girl to just do what I asked of her.

“I take it you’re in a sticky situation?” She continued to press.

“Come on Eva, I said no questions. Just facetime me baby c’mon..” I plead. Eva complied and the second she saw my face I let her know what the deal is. Hopefully this goes over well because I’ll be damned if I ruin Bri’s plans to have this baby. Regardless of my opinions on her choice I’d never stand in the way of her happiness.

Where Americans Are Moving This Spring: Wanna Gamble a Guess?

Spring brings out the moving trucks en masse, as people start itching for a change of scenery. And new research suggests that one state is raking in new residents more than any other: Nevada.

That’s according to ATTOM’s Pre-Mover Housing Index, which compared the number of residential mortgage applications with the total number of single-family homes in a given area during the first quarter of 2018 (so, January through March). Basically, a higher mortgage-to-housing inventory ratio means more people are slated to be moving to the area within the next 90 days. That means Nevada, scoring the highest of all states, should expect a whole lot of newcomers from April through June. Nevada was followed by Delaware, Florida, Colorado, and Virginia.

Granted, Nevada (and its glittery epicenter, Las Vegas) is a fun place to visit—to, say, play some slots or blackjack before you bail (typically with less cash than you had going in). But why are more and more people deciding to stick around?

According to local real estate experts, there’s a lot more to Nevada than all-you-can-eat buffets, craps tables, and Celine Dion. Let us count all the reasons why Nevada’s an increasingly popular place to live.

Low taxes and cost of living

First off, who are all these Nevada-bound home buyers? According to real estate agents, the latest wave is dominated by a mix of cash-strapped millennials and well-off retirees, both of whom are drawn to the low cost of living that Nevada provides in a variety of ways—starting with low state taxes.

“A large number of home buyers that are moving from out of state into Nevada, specifically Las Vegas, are moving here primarily because of our favorable tax structure,” says Arnée Dodd, a real estate agent at Keller Williams Southwest, in Las Vegas.

Namely, Nevada residents pay no income tax; meanwhile businesses bask in a favorable environment with a low payroll tax and no inventory or franchise tax (hmmm, maybe that’s why Amazon just built a new warehouse here).

Most of the home buyers Dodd’s seeing are moving from New York City, Chicago, Oregon, and (most of all) California—the last of which makes particular sense given these states are next-door neighbors.

“Many are ‘tax refugees’ who move to Nevada from California to escape the high taxes,” says Jason Hartman, president of Platinum Properties Investment Network. “If you stay away from the casinos, Las Vegas is a very inexpensive place to live.”

New businesses (and jobs)

A recent influx of new businesses and sports teams has also turned Nevada into more of a magnet.

“We’re seeing the impact of the new Raiders Stadium, the Golden Knights, the Las Vegas Aces WNBA team, and Amazon’s new fulfillment warehouse in North Las Vegas,” Dodd says. “All of these new jobs are bringing with them existing employees that will be relocating, and residents from other states to fill these new positions, making Las Vegas an attractive destination.”

And it’s not just Las Vegas, but also Reno, which bills itself “The biggest lilttle city in the world,” and nearby Sparks that are all seeing fast-paced growth.

“Now Reno is booming, too,” explains California developer Tyler Drew. As for Sparks, “When Elon Musk said that’s where the Gigafactory would be built [to create lithium-ion batteries to power Tesla cars], companies and people flocked to that otherwise sleepy town.”

Cheap homes

Last but not least? The houses in Nevada are bargains—and plentiful due to tons of construction.

“This is a city that invests in itself—never have I seen so much construction in a city not for repair, but for forward expansion,” says Nevada resident Alex Felice from BrokeIsAChoice.com. In addition to residential homes, “Las Vegas is working on roads now, widening them for future growth over the next 10 years.”

Currently, according to realtor.com/local, the median price of homes in Las Vegas is $275,000. Compare that with San Francisco’s median of $1.3 million, and you could easily live in Vegas and fly to work in S.F. and still end up ahead (by as much as $1,124 a month by one account).

“Part of this is a symptom of California’s housing crisis issues,” Drew says. “Do you have an education? Skills? Can afford a home that’s $500,000 but not $800,000 for your family? Nevada is a smart option. The California exodus for millennials is very real, and Nevada is reaping the benefits.”

In addition to having cheaper homes, programs exist in Nevada to make them even more affordable through financial assistance.

“Incentive programs for first-time home buyers, like the Home Is Possible down payment assistance program, have also been a catalyst for people moving to Nevada,” Dodd says.

So, deals abound—come ‘n’ get ’em now! Because these bargains may not last for long.

“Real estate prices here are growing fast due to this demand,” says Felice. “If you want to move to Nevada, the time is immediately, as prices are going up daily and there seems to be no end in sight.”

Sounds like a pretty good wager to us.

This is the garbage in, garbage out principle: flawed data going in leads to flawed results, algorithms, and business decisions. If a self-driving car’s decision-making algorithm is trained on data of traffic collected during the day, you wouldn’t put it on the roads at night.

To take it a step further, if such an algorithm is trained in an environment with cars driven by humans, how can you expect it to perform well on roads with other self-driving cars?

Beyond the autonomous driving example described, the “garbage in” side of the equation can take many forms—for example, incorrectly entered data, poorly packaged data, and data collected incorrectly, more of which we’ll address below.

If you’re basing business decisions on dashboards or the results of online experiments, you need to have the right data.

On the machine learning side, we are entering what Andrei Karpathy, director of AI at Tesla, dubs the Software 2.0 era, a new paradigm for software where machine learning and AI require less focus on writing code and more on configuring, selecting inputs, and iterating through data to create higher level models that learn from the data we give them.

In this new world, data has become a first-class citizen, where computation becomes increasingly probabilistic and programs no longer do the same thing each time they run.

The model and the data specification become more important than the code.

Collecting the right data requires a principled approach that is a function of your business question.

Data collected for one purpose can have limited use for other questions.

The assumed value of data is a myth leading to inflated valuations of start-ups capturing said data. John Myles White, data scientist and engineering manager at Facebook, wrote:

The biggest risk I see with data science projects is that analyzing data per se is generally a bad thing.

Generating data with a pre-specified analysis plan and running that analysis is good. Re-analyzing existing data is often very bad.”

John is drawing attention to thinking carefully about what you hope to get out of the data, what question you hope to answer, what biases may exist, and what you need to correct before jumping in with an analysis[1].

With the right mindset, you can get a lot out of analyzing existing data—for example, descriptive data is often quite useful for early-stage companies[2].

Not too long ago, “save everything” was a common maxim in tech; you never knew if you might need the data. However, attempting to repurpose pre-existing data can muddy the water by shifting the semantics from why the data was collected to the question you hope to answer. In particular, determining causation from correlation can be difficult.

For example, a pre-existing correlation pulled from an organization’s database should be tested in a new experiment and not assumed to imply causation[3], instead of this commonly encountered pattern in tech:

Correlation in existing data is evidence for causation that then needs to be verified by collecting more data.

The same challenge plagues scientific research. Take the case of Brian Wansink, former head of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, who stepped down after a Cornell faculty review reported he “committed academic misconduct in his research and scholarship, including misreporting of research data, problematic statistical techniques [and] failure to properly document and preserve research results.” One of his more egregious errors was to continually test already collected data for new hypotheses until one stuck, after his initial hypothesis failed[4]. NPR put it well: “the gold standard of scientific studies is to make a single hypothesis, gather data to test it, and analyze the results to see if it holds up. By Wansink’s own admission in the blog post, that’s not what happened in his lab.” He continually tried to fit new hypotheses unrelated to why he collected the data until he got a null hypothesis with an acceptable p-value—a perversion of the scientific method.

Data professionals spend an inordinate amount on time cleaning, repairing, and preparing data

Before you even think about sophisticated modeling, state-of-the-art machine learning, and AI, you need to make sure your data is ready for analysis—this is the realm of data preparation. You may picture data scientists building machine learning models all day, but the common trope that they spend 80% of their time on data preparation is closer to the truth.

This is old news in many ways, but it’s old news that still plagues us: a recent O’Reilly survey found that lack of data or data quality issues was one of the main bottlenecks for further AI adoption for companies at the AI evaluation stage and was the main bottleneck for companies with mature AI practices.

Good quality datasets are all alike, but every low-quality dataset is low-quality in its own way[5]. Data can be low-quality if:

It doesn’t fit your question or its collection wasn’t carefully considered; It’s erroneous (it may say “cicago” for a location), inconsistent (it may say “cicago” in one place and “Chicago” in another), or missing; It’s good data but packaged in an atrocious way—e.g., it’s stored across a range of siloed databases in an organization; It requires human labeling to be useful (such as manually labeling emails as ��spam” or “not” for a spam detection algorithm).

This definition of low-quality data defines quality as a function of how much work is required to get the data into an analysis-ready form. Look at the responses to my tweet for data quality nightmares that modern data professionals grapple with.

The importance of automating data preparation

Most of the conversation around AI automation involves automating machine learning models, a field known as AutoML.

This is important: consider how many modern models need to operate at scale and in real time (such as Google’s search engine and the relevant tweets that Twitter surfaces in your feed). We also need to be talking about automation of all steps in the data science workflow/pipeline, including those at the start. Why is it important to automate data preparation?

It occupies an inordinate amount of time for data professionals. Data drudgery automation in the era of data smog will free data scientists up for doing more interesting, creative work (such as modeling or interfacing with business questions and insights). “76% of data scientists view data preparation as the least enjoyable part of their work,” according to a CrowdFlower survey.

A series of subjective data preparation micro-decisions can bias your analysis. For example, one analyst may throw out data with missing values, another may infer the missing values. Automating data preparation won’t necessarily remove such bias, but it will make it systematic, discoverable, auditable, unit-testable, and correctable. Model results will then be less reliant on individuals making hundreds of micro-decisions.

An added benefit is that the work will be reproducible and robust, in the sense that somebody else (say, in another department) can reproduce the analysis and get the same results[7];

For the increasing number of real-time algorithms in production, humans need to be taken out of the loop at runtime as much as possible (and perhaps be kept in the loop more as algorithmic managers): when you use Siri to make a reservation on OpenTable by asking for a table for four at a nearby Italian restaurant tonight, there’s a speech-to-text model, a geographic search model, and a restaurant-matching model, all working together in real time.

No data analysts/scientists work on this data pipeline as everything must happen in real time, requiring an automated data preparation and data quality workflow (e.g., to resolve if I say “eye-talian” instead of “it-atian”).

The third point above speaks more generally to the need for automation around all parts of the data science workflow. This need will grow as smart devices, IoT, voice assistants, drones, and augmented and virtual reality become more prevalent.

Automation represents a specific case of democratization, making data skills easily accessible for the broader population. Democratization involves both education (which I focus on in my work at DataCamp) and developing tools that many people can use.

Understanding the importance of general automation and democratization of all parts of the DS/ML/AI workflow, it’s important to recognize that we’ve done pretty well at democratizing data collection and gathering, modeling[8], and data reporting[9], but what remains stubbornly difficult is the whole process of preparing the data.

Modern tools for automating data cleaning and data preparation

We’re seeing the emergence of modern tools for automated data cleaning and preparation, such as HoloClean and Snorkel coming from Christopher Ré’s group at Stanford.

HoloClean decouples the task of data cleaning into error detection (such as recognizing that the location “cicago” is erroneous) and repairing erroneous data (such as changing “cicago” to “Chicago”), and formalizes the fact that “data cleaning is a statistical learning and inference problem.”

All data analysis and data science work is a combination of data, assumptions, and prior knowledge. So when you’re missing data or have “low-quality data,” you use assumptions, statistics, and inference to repair your data.

HoloClean performs this automatically in a principled, statistical manner. All the user needs to do is “to specify high-level assertions that capture their domain expertise with respect to invariants that the input data needs to satisfy. No other supervision is required!”

The HoloClean team also has a system for automating the “building and managing [of] training datasets without manual labeling” called Snorkel. Having correctly labeled data is a key part of preparing data to build machine learning models[10].

Researchers at Google AI have adapted Snorkel to label data at industrial/web scale and demonstrated its utility in three scenarios: topic classification, product classification, and real-time event classification.

Snorkel doesn’t stop at data labeling. It also allows you to automate two other key aspects of data preparation:

Data augmentation—that is, creating more labeled data. Consider an image recognition problem in which you are trying to detect cars in photos for your self-driving car algorithm.

Classically, you’ll need at least several thousand labeled photos for your training dataset. If you don’t have enough training data and it’s too expensive to manually collect and label more data, you can create more by rotating and reflecting your images.

Discovery of critical data subsets—for example, figuring out which subsets of your data really help to distinguish spam from non-spam.

These are two of many current examples of the augmented data preparation revolution, which includes products from IBM and DataRobot.

The future of data tooling and data preparation as a cultural challenge

So what does the future hold? In a world with an increasing number of models and algorithms in production, learning from large amounts of real-time streaming data, we need both education and tooling/products for domain experts to build, interact with, and audit the relevant data pipelines.

We’ve seen a lot of headway made in democratizing and automating data collection and building models. Just look at the emergence of drag-and-drop tools for machine learning workflows coming out of Google and Microsoft.

As we saw from the recent O’Reilly survey, data preparation and cleaning still take up a lot of time that data professionals don’t enjoy. For this reason, it’s exciting that we’re now starting to see headway in automated tooling for data cleaning and preparation. It will be interesting to see how this space grows and how the tools are adopted.

A bright future would see data preparation and data quality as first-class citizens in the data workflow, alongside machine learning, deep learning, and AI. Dealing with incorrect or missing data is unglamorous but necessary work.

It’s easy to justify working with data that’s obviously wrong; the only real surprise is the amount of time it takes. Understanding how to manage more subtle problems with data, such as data that reflects and perpetuates historical biases (for example, real estate redlining) is a more difficult organizational challenge.

This will require honest, open conversations in any organization around what data workflows actually look like.

The fact that business leaders are focused on predictive models and deep learning while data workers spend most of their time on data preparation is a cultural challenge, not a technical one. If this part of the data flow pipeline is going to be solved in the future, everybody needs to acknowledge and understand the challenge.
