better things are here with you
Summary: “Despite the objective truth of the statement, Logan was still not convinced that that was the whole story.
Whether it was intuition, his embarrassingly extensive knowledge of Roman’s behaviours and mannerisms or Logan simply reading far too many Agatha Christie novels, the fact still remained: Roman was lying.”
Pairing: Logince with background moxiety
Warnings: Quick mention of very minor burns.
A/N: This is my fic for Logan’s birthday!!! He’s my Favourite Boy and I’m very excited to see all the stuff surrounding him that’ll come out today.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Do you not have better things to be doing?"
Logan raised an eyebrow, looking away from his novel to see Roman attempting to squirm his head into his lap—rather unsuccessfully considering that is where Logan's book currently resided.
It was not the first time Roman had demanded his attention today. He'd already burnt his hand on the oven whilst attempting to make lunch—fortunately, the burns were only superficial and he’d recovered fairly quickly—on top of both getting trapped looking for something under the couch and colliding directly into Logan in the hall, sending papers flying everywhere.
In conclusion, Roman had been particularly trying that afternoon and Logan had no clue as to why.
"Better than bothering you?" Roman replied with a wolfish grin that definitely didn’t make Logan’s heart turn over in his chest, "Never."
He seemed to have momentarily given up on his attempts to invade Logan's personal space, instead resting his head on the couch cushion beneath him, his legs thrown over the side.
It didn’t seem a very comfortable position to be in when taking into account Roman's height but then, all his roommates had a tendency to sit in rather odd positions. Whenever Logan inquired as to why they didn't simply sit like regular human beings he got some indecipherable comment about gay culture and as such he'd long since stopped asking.
He closed his book, making a mental note of his place before setting it on the coffee table in front of them.
"Was there something you required, Roman? You've been notably…” Logan searched around for a moment for the correct word, “…disruptive this evening. If I didn’t know better I would say that Remus had come to take your place—however, I’m also well aware that your brother is somehow even less subtle than you are.”
The expression that took over Roman's face seemed appropriately caught out. “Oh! Um…”
He scrambled around on the couch for a moment, trying to turn himself around so he was sitting upright. Once he’d finally settled, wide eyes and a hesitant smile on his face, Logan was almost certain there was more to this than Roman simply bothering him for amusement—something that had remained perfectly plausible until now.
“Well, you know… it gets lonely without the other two around! I’m used to hearing Patton giggling at something or Virgil… well, Virgil doesn’t really make a whole lot of noise, I suppose, but he’s always there. And now they’re not.” He scratched at the back of his neck, mostly avoiding Logan’s gaze. “‘s just weird.”
It was true that the flat had gotten a lot quieter since Virgil and Patton had left on vacation earlier that month.
It was something Virgil had been planning in secret for weeks and weeks before revealing it, knowing that Patton appreciated surprises just as much as Virgil disliked them. He’d been coordinating with Roman and Logan too, considering Roman and Patton were generally considered the closest platonic pairing amongst the four and Logan had a better sense of budgeting than Virgil could even dream of having.
Patton had been delighted, Virgil had been delighted by association—or as delighted as he allowed himself to be in front of the rest of them, anyway—and the two of them had set off, leaving the apartment to Logan and Roman.
Still, though, Logan was not convinced that that was the whole story. Whether it was intuition, his embarrassingly extensive knowledge of Roman’s behaviours and mannerisms or Logan simply reading far too many Agatha Christie novels, the fact still remained: Roman was lying.
Despite his reputation, Logan was not heartless—and when it came to Roman, even less so. If something was bothering one of his friends, Logan wanted to know what.
“And that’s all?” he questioned dubiously.
Roman nodded his head vigorously. “That’s all! Anyway, I think I should be getting back to-”
“Forgive me if I don’t entirely believe you, Roman,” Logan interrupted, stopping Roman dead in his tracks, “If you were simply lonely, why would this behaviour have developed today rather than several weeks ago when Patton and Virgil first left? Why now?”
Roman’s eyes were wide, still frozen in a position of half-risen from the couch. He bit at his bottom lip for a moment before sinking back onto the cushion, far enough away that Logan couldn’t help but notice the absence of warmth beside him.
“Well… it’s Patton and Virgil’s three year anniversary tomorrow.”
Logan blinked. “Yes, I am aware.”
Ducking his head suddenly, Roman’s whole face alighted with a blush Logan had never previously seen from him, colouring his cheeks in beautiful shades of pink and red.
Roman was not easily flustered. He was a rather extensive flirt—a fact that Logan attempted not to be frustrated by—and tended to give as good as he got, shooting back line after line and laughing when any were particularly corny.
In fact, his blushes were considerably more likely to be caused by embarrassment, yet years of living with Remus had given him a rather high tolerance when it came to being ashamed—when your brother has already been thrown out of the aquarium for loudly describing how he was going to have sex with a fish, it feels like not much else you do can compare.
Logan wasn’t going to claim that Roman’s behaviour was completely outlandish, however, it was most definitely something to take note of.
Roman mumbled something under his breath, raising his eyes to meet Logan’s with a somewhat vulnerable look.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch that,” Logan admitted carefully.
Roman’s expression became pained for a moment.
“I just-” He cut himself off with a frustrated yell, jumping up from the couch to pace agitatedly around the room. Logan just watched—quiet and patient, wishing he knew some way to soothe him. “This wasn’t how I wanted to do this!”
“Do what, Roman?”
Roman stopped suddenly, spinning around to look at Logan in a way that he was entirely unfamiliar with. It was something soft and awed, like all the fight Roman held had been drained out of him with Logan’s words and replaced with a quiet sort of wonder, lighting Logan’s chest on fire with his gaze.
Logan was entirely uncertain about what could have caused such a reaction but he was unable to question him as Roman began to speak.
“Do you know the way you scrunch up your nose when you’re thinking? Or the way your eyes light up when we take you out stargazing and it doesn’t seem to matter that it’s a regular event because you display the same kind of astonishment every single month—as if you’re truly seeing the stars for the first time?
“I thought about telling you there, seeing the reflection of the stars in your eyes as I told you how you are worth more than galaxies to me, and how if it were in my power I would gift you every single star in that sky just to see you smile like that forever.”
Roman glided back around the coffee table, perching himself on the edge as he continued to speak.
“I thought about telling you a million times. Every moment you provided some marginally-relevant fact as if it were the most valuable knowledge you’ve ever imparted, every moment you debated me with a passion unmatched and a joy I’m oh so happy to bring, every time you rolled your eyes fondly or stared just a moment too long and blushed as you looked away and every moment that I got the sense that maybe—maybe—you could be thinking about telling me too.
“I had dreams of wooing you, Logan, because you deserve so much more than a rushed confession on the deadline of a dare and it is my own cowardice that has robbed you of that. I only hope you can forgive me.”
Roman may not be easily flustered but Logan found he most definitely was, especially when it came to attractive men confessing their love for him. He was almost certain his face had never been as red as it was at this exact moment, his lips gently parted and eyes blinking rapidly as he struggled to find something to say.
“I…” Logan trailed off almost immediately, his head abuzz with scraps of sentences with no conclusions. “Oh.”
Roman appeared regretful for a moment and Logan became so keenly aware of the fact that he never wished to cause that expression in Roman ever again. “You don’t have to return my affections, Lo. Goodness knows I don’t deser-”
“You do,” Logan cut in with a kind of assurance he hoped left no room for error or doubt, “Of course, you do. I can’t believe you’d think for even a moment that you are not worth exactly as much to me as I am to you.
“The idea of you claiming yourself unworthy as if you aren’t akin to a supernova—brightening the night sky and lighting everything around it on fire—as if you aren’t a story more interesting than any constellation could possibly hold, rarer than any star shooting across the sky…”
He felt breathless for a moment, gasping from the incredulity colouring his words.
“It’s absurd that you could think you aren’t deserving of love, Roman. Utterly absurd.”
Roman blinked a few times, seemingly processing Logan’s words, before grinning big and bright and gorgeous. There was an entire universe contained in that smile, gifted to Logan in a moment of unbridled joy that he could never be more grateful for.
“Does that mean you feel the same?” Roman asked, hope tinting his words.
Logan softened, the edges of his mouth quirking up in a way he wouldn’t have been able to repress even if he’d wanted to. “Ye-”
He barely managed to get through his confession before Roman was springing forward, pinning Logan back against the couch and pressing their lips together. It was hot and overwhelming and so very Roman, and Logan did nothing but soak it in—returning the kiss with, while not as much frenzy, just as much affection.
As they broke the kiss, returning to blinding smiles and soft gazes, Logan couldn’t help but realise that Roman had found a way into his lap after all.
And if Roman sent Virgil a selfie of Logan curled up in his arms that night, caption claiming that his end of the deal was complete and he was expecting to see a ring on Patton’s finger by the time they returned from their holiday? Well, Logan didn’t have to know that.
Trinidadian comedian uses humour to say gender-based violence isn't funny
‘It is important to [see] women as equals, worthy of respect’
Rhea-Simone Auguste, better known as the comedian Simmy De Trini. Photograph courtesy Auguste, used with permission. Photo credit: Mark Lyndersay for www.causeaneffect.co
Trinidad and Tobago, which has been grappling with increasing cases of gender-based violence and femicide, is still reeling over the murder of teenager Ashanti Riley, who was stabbed to death after being abducted by the driver of a private hire (PH) taxi on November 29. Since then, online discussion has been rife over the tendency to victim-blame and put the onus on women to protect themselves, as opposed to focusing on changing the culture and socialisation of men. One comedian decided to start pushing for that shift to happen in a rather unconventional way. On Facebook, Rhea-Simone Auguste, better known as Simmy De Trini, has published a series of scenarios, presented in local parlance, that play as reverse sexual harassment. The impact of this unexpected role reversal has emphasised the absurdity of what women are made to endure in the hyper-masculine Caribbean culture. Via WhatsApp, Simmy chatted with Global Voices about the gravity of gender-based violence and why she believes that humour is a good way to jump-start productive public discussion on the issue. Janine Mendes-Franco (JMF): Was this series inspired by the most recent spate of femicides or is this a theme you have been mulling over for a while now?
Simmy De Trini (SDT): As a survivor of both domestic violence and rape, I have been vocal over the last few years about the injustice women face and the inability of our current system to protect women from harm or worse, murder. The “reverse harassment” posts were not planned. I just got fed up of saying the same things so I switched it up and just started doing sarcastic posts about the situation.
JMF: Each of your instalments has attracted hundreds of likes, comments and shares. What kind of discussion did you want to get going?
SDT: When I realised the first post started gaining traction, the others were done with the hope of sparking discussions about the harassment women experience and the kind of attitudes we encounter that we need men to revisit and review in themselves and their friends.
JMF: Some people seem to be missing the point though.
SDT: The people who did not get it were in the minority and did not have an impact on me continuing. I felt like more people understood where I was coming from so I did not hesitate to keep sharing the posts.
JMF: How disturbing is it to you that most women can identify with some measure of what you speak about in these scenarios?
SDT: Very disturbing but not surprising. In conversations with friends, I have heard so many women talk about these situations with men that I already knew many others would have similar experiences and stories.
JMF: Tell us about your journey to becoming a comedian. Your brand of humour always seems to address serious issues by presenting truths in non-threatening ways. Why is this important to you, and as a woman in what remains a macho society, do you feel a responsibility to provoke thought to a greater degree than a male comedian might?
SDT: I started doing stand-up in 2017, as a creative outlet to help me cope and explore topics that had affected or impacted my life. I have some superficial stuff mixed in but try to explore aspects of mental health and domestic violence prevention and abuse when I can. I don't think much about it in terms of a responsibility but hope my messages sink in for those who can relate.
JMF: How do you tap into this ability to place yourself in the midst of an issue, yet find a way to witness the injustice through laughter?
SDT: I really don't overthink things. If something is going on that I want to talk about, I just do it spur of the moment and from my perspective.
JMF: Is there a difference between Simmy the Trini and Rhea-Simone? How do you draw the line?
SDT: Huge difference. Simmy is a stage name and a different personality. Simmy is loud and funny and all about the public life. Rhea-Simone [is] who I am as a person. I am a loner and like to be in quiet spaces where I can hear my own thoughts. People are usually surprised when they meet me and realise that Simmy can be “turned off,” and that I am mostly serious and able to speak on a range of topics that are not necessarily funny, but hold importance. That's why aside from comedy, I have been trying to do more public speaking and motivational speaking engagements because I enjoy talking to people in different settings.
JMF: You’re the mother of two boys. How is your work teaching them to change what seems to be a pervasive objectification of women in Trinidad and Tobago?
SDT: My sons are being raised to respect and value women. The women around me and by extension them are usually strong, vocal and from different walks of life. It is important to me that they grow up seeing women as equals and worthy of respect.
JMF: What do you want this series to accomplish?
SDT: More dialogue about what we have come to accept as the norm — but in reality is a degradation and devaluing of women — leading to these instances of violence, abuse, harassment or murder.
JMF: How do you think we can begin to solve the problem of gender-based violence?
SDT: Just as there is a sexual offenders registry, we need to have a domestic violence registry for repeat offenders. If you check the background of some of the men who end up murdering a woman in a domestic violence scenario, they sometimes have a clear history and pattern and it was escalating. Counselling for both victims and abusers is necessary to help people with anger management and conflict resolution techniques and strategies. Education is important too. I would love to see a full campaign in the public space that shows a no tolerance aspect for abuse and violence against women.
JMF: What role has social media played when it comes to sharing and promoting your work?
SDT: Facebook, in particular, has been important as it has allowed me to grow a following for my work and opened doors for me to get more work not just as a comedian but as a self-employed journalist and content creator.
JMF: Who have been your greatest influences?
SDT: My mom. My sons. Professionally, as a writer, I was trained by and worked with [journalists] Keith Smith, Deborah John and Angela Martin. In terms of comedy, Wanda Sykes — and I hope to work with her one day.
JMF: Imagine you’re doing a show and your audience is only men. What would you say to them, all jokes aside?
SDT: Women are important to the very fabric of our society. You stand to benefit when you see our value, our contributions and our worth.
Someone who takes control and responsibility for his own life.
A man who has high levels of integrity.
A conscious man will be interested in a woman who is natural.
Creates a safe space for communication.
True to his word.
Consistent, especially through difficult times.
He is not afraid of criticism.
Comfortable in his own skin.
Accepts his faults and faces up to mistakes.
He has self-love, self-worth and high self-esteem.
Listens fully and communicates clearly and honestly.
Not co-dependent.
Does not have the need or desire to control his relationship or any other person.
He has a strong masculine spirit.
In touch with his feminine side.
Does not avoid conflict.
Honest, open, loyal and trustworthy.
Connects fully and makes his partner feel unique.
Cares deeply about the planet and all of its inhabitants.
Knows how to pleasure a woman sexually without thinking of his needs.
On a journey constantly growing and learning.
A conscious man will take care of his emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health and he will likely be attracted to a person who does the same.
To to attract a conscious man it is essential to do the vital inner work needed to ensure there is progression towards fully loving ourselves and being the best version of who we are so we reach our highest potential.
A conscious man is intrigued by a woman who is comfortable to be her complete authentic, genuine self. Flaws, imperfections and the shadow self will not matter to a man who is conscious. He would rather a woman shows up entirely as she is, accepting that she is on a journey of progression, rather than trying to hide or mask herself and be someone who she is not.
The kind of woman that doesn’t give a f*ck about what people think about her is who a conscious man will find most attractive. One who won’t change, blend or compromise her self to suit or conform to societies norms or expectations. The conscious male will be attracted to a woman who sets her own guidelines, standards and moral codes. Just knowing that she is true to herself, honours herself and those around her is what a conscious man finds intoxicating and magnetising.
A conscious man won’t want a woman who commits herself to making him happy; he wants someone whose primary focus is making her self happy. He knows that no other person is responsible for his happiness other than himself. A conscious man adores being in the company of, or connected to, a woman who is radiant from the core, who is free-spirited and who sets out on adventures to explore her dreams and fantasies.
A conscious man will not criticize or put down a woman in any way for being her true, authentic self. He accepts a woman as she is and does not expect her to be full of joy at all times. A conscious man fully understands that life will offer every shade and knows that everyone has inner demons to work through.
There is a level of peace and inner calm with a conscious man and he will very rarely lose self-control or to allow his emotions to get the better of himself. He will not appreciate if someone tries to deliberately wind him up or push him to see if they can cause a reaction.
There will be no game playing with a conscious man—he will spot this type of manipulating behaviour immediately. He has no time for drama or for high maintenance people, he wants people around him that are not afraid to speak their truth, do not need to be chased and do not use trickery to gain attention.
A conscious man wants to be around a woman who is not going to judge him for being truly himself and likewise, he will not do the same in return. He wants to be free to sample all that life offers, make mistakes, learn from them and begin anew everyday.
The conscious man has high integrity and good morals and wants a female who can recognise this so that she will trust him on his path without feeling insecure or doubtful of his actions. He is a work of progression, not perfection and sees others the same and he accepts he will fall many times. However hard he hits the ground, he will get back up stronger and wiser every time. He will not appreciate someone who berates him for being true and aligning with his authentic self.
Although a conscious man wants to be accepted for who he is, he also wants to be around a woman who is not afraid to call him out on his bullsh*t. When a conscious man is not being genuine, is living within his ego or is not authentic, he will appreciate being told and also being held accountable for it. He respects a woman who pushes him to achieve his highest potential, but only when a woman does this from a place of love and not from fears or insecurities.
The conscious man knows that the right relationship will help his evolution, just as he is there to assist the female through hers and he wants someone around him where their dual focus is on growth and journeying through life side by side, whilst both on their individual paths.
When in a relationship with a conscious man it is important to leave the past firmly behind and exist in the present moment. Holding on to heavy baggage or loves now gone will prevent the relationship from deepening and a conscious man will be very aware that barriers and walls are present. The past has now passed and the only place to exist is fully in the present moment, embracing the exhilarating sensations that love, adventure and life have to offer.
Unresolved or unhealed painful memories give off a powerful negative energy and it is essential that these wounds are acknowledged and worked on. When the work is done, rather than attracting the same types of energy and relationships that brought the onslaught of old traumatic patterns, new energy and love will radiate, which will then attract a similar vibration to that which is send out.
In a relationship with a conscious man there will be no need to focus on the superficial aspects of our lives. The conscious man is interested and intrigued by what lies deep down within our souls and what is happening within our minds. It is important to stop worrying about outer appearances and judging whether we are good enough, pretty enough or worthy of attention or admiration from anyone. The most important opinion is how a woman sees and thinks about herself and her ability to accept herself entirely as she is—that is the attitude that attracts the right type of person.
Women who can fully accept themselves and also who worship and honour their inner Goddess will radiate an abundance of energy and sensuality that conscious men find very intriguing and attractive.
The conscious man has a powerful sexual energy, however, he will not use it to his advantage to seduce or gain affection or advances of women. He knows exactly how to respect and honour a woman and admires someone who also is aware of her magnetising energy. Together they will be in a place to cherish and explore the powerful, explosive and ultimately healing benefits their energetically charged connection delivers.
For any woman that wants to attract a conscious male into their lives, they must first let go of everything they have known from past relationships: all the hurt, pain and mistrust and recognise the full qualities a conscious male possesses.
A masculine warrior and a feminine Goddess can together create a harmonious, soul bonding and life-altering partnership that will be a sacred commitment to worshiping each others’ paths and journeys together, yet entirely separately as they each stand firm and live authentically in their own truth.
“There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” ~ C.G. Jung
The term conscious or evolved (awakened) man is used to describe a man who is fully aware of his thoughts, feelings, perceptions, beliefs, opinions and someone who stands elegantly in his own truth and is not afraid to acknowledge and express the depths of who he is.
A conscious man is neither afraid of his powerful masculine or feminine energy and he is constantly working to find the balance within the two.
A conscious man is aware that his masculine energy provides him with decisiveness, analytical thinking, assertiveness and pushes him to strive, and that his feminine side provides him with patience, an open heart, loving, nurturing and inner calm.
Conscious men can appear to be elusive and many women seem to attract the same types of men over and over, repeating the same mistakes, and being presented with the same lessons time and again.
*Dear elephant reader: if you're single & looking for mindful dating or conscious love, try out our lovely partner, MeetMindful.
~
The reason for this is that women can turn a blind eye to a conscious man as they are afraid that they may not live up to the same standards a conscious man lives to, or it may be that some women aren’t fully aware of how to recognise a conscious man when they meet one.
Due to a conscious man standing strong in his own truth, he can make others feel as though they have come face to face with all of their insecurities. It can feel as though the conscious man holds out a mirror so that other people see their reflections clearly and vividly.
If we do not have high self-esteem or self-worth these reflections can tempt us to run and hide from our problems rather than facing up to them and doing the necessary work and making changes for personal growth.
To be able to recognise a conscious man easily, these are a few of the most common traits:
Honours the divine Goddess within the female.
Someone who takes control and responsibility for his own life.
A man who has high levels of integrity.
A conscious man will be interested in a woman who is natural.
Creates a safe space for communication.
True to his word.
“There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” ~ C.G. Jung
