Why people think mcyt means dsmp only— a crack theory

It’s simple. There are no short (and widespread) ways to call DSMP members.

Think about it. SMPs ending with -craft are great (branding-wise) because people will instinctively add -er after the craft to form -crafter. A good example is Hermitcraft and they’re often called Hermitcrafters (especially by people who don’t really watch them but know them). It’s instinctive to use the term “Hermitcrafter” and it works even though “hermit” is more commonly used in the community. This works for most SMPs ending with -craft. Even if they don’t have a specific name/ you don’t know the specific name like Hermits for Hermitcraft, using Mindcracker, SciCrafter etc works. 

But what if you don’t end in -craft? Easy, try to add -er. X Lifers. 3rd Lifers. People know what you mean easily. Sure, it may be a little clunky, but it’s better than “X Life members”. Some names are also really easy. What do you call members of the Vault Hunters SMP? Vault Hunters. It is that easy. 

But how about those you can’t add -er? Like Legacy SMP and Evo SMP? Well, considering they are founded by Minecraft Professionals who know how Branding Works, they just make up a name for the members that is vaguely related to the name of the SMP but still sounds natural. Legates. Evolutionists. 

For SMPs that have specific names for their members (like Hermits and Legates), this creates a sense of inclusivity and community. For those who just add -er, there’s slightly less of a “community feel” because it’s just the name of the SMP plus er, but hey! It works well! It’s concise and widespread and intuitive! 

But for Dream SMP? Doesn’t have a craft. Can’t add -er because Dreamer is such a broad and general term (unlike stuff like X Lifers). No specific names either (not counting factions and groups). Just “DSMP members” or “DSMPers” (I don’t think I’ve really seen the latter though).

So what do the fans call Dream SMP members? They’re Minecraft YouTubers, right? So they’re MCYT! This works! 

(Except it doesn’t.)

Unfortunately MCYT covers Literally Every Single Person who uploaded a Minecraft YouTube video and is suuuuper broad and general. 

It doesn’t add that DSMP fanbase is so big that soon the use of the term “MCYT” suddenly means DSMP people only.

... Fun fact: Hermitcraft used to be the most popular SMP for... quite a long time, to be honest. And guess what? Due to their Branding, they’re called Hermits or Hermitcrafters by the community, and no one complained that MCYT referred to hermits only (ofc this has to do with a less large and less annoying fanbase). (The problem of tagging MCYT stuff with “Minecraft” on tumblr still existed, which was quite annoying but not as annoying as it is now). Sure, the hermits are MCYT, but... no one calls them that when talking about Hermitcraft specific stuff. Why use such a broad and nonspecific term when the term “hermit” or “Hermitcrafter” literally exists? Plus, hermits refer to themselves and each other as hermits, it’s their brand, and now the ENTIRE community uses that term. Even if the term “hermit” is general (not as general as “dreamer” though), there’s still Hermitcrafters. 

In conclusion, I feel like a lot of this would’ve been solved if DSMP thought a bit more carefully about their branding, or made up a Special Name and constantly used it in streams so it sticks with the community. I bet if any other SMP with Specific Names or can use the -er trick becomes as popular as DSMP, the whole “MCYT doesn’t refer to people from a specific SMP!!1!1″ thing won’t be as serious. 

Branding is important. I rest my case.

you grew up with minecraft and it was an understatement to say it was part of your childhood

even years later, you still maintained interested in the game

it wasn’t just a simple video game, the community inspired you to do many things

making people happy and entertained was a dream

and when minecraft slowly began trending again in 2019, you started making your own content whenever you felt like it out of fun

you never got much views but it was an enjoyable experience nonetheless

but it wasn’t until the first minecraft monday you decided to push a bit more with your hobbies and worked hard to make it somewhere

however balancing your passions with school wasn’t the easiest

besides recognizing him from his you laugh you lose series and making parody-type of songs, you didn’t know much

however with a few clicks, you had binge watched his smp earth series effortlessly

you found yourself falling down the endless hole, finding more creators to watch through wilbur

one in particular caught your eye in an interesting way

you hoped tommy couldn’t hear the strain in your voice due to fighting your nerves, but you quietly celebrated that you didn’t freeze up altogether

and the conversation smoothly went on, bouncing back and forth between you two before your other two teammates joined the call

once everyone was situated, you decided to start streaming since it was your first mcc and you wanted a vod of you practicing to look at later on as a memory

your chat immediately noticed how much you were enjoying yourself, especially after all the short stories of talking about who inspired you in the past

the smile plastered on your face never left

after stream and your other teammates went offline, it was you and tommy left in the call once together again

“it was nice talking to you tommy! and the practice was really fun, i cant wait for the actual competition!”

you knew tommy was implying the teamwork wasn’t going to be the best compared to the other teams but at least in the end you’ve both made a new friend

the moment he left the call, you felt a sense of relief before a small wave of sadness took over

on some days you felt bad since you thought you didn’t know enough about him to even be allowed to crush on him

it was a bit unprofessional but you were nearly 16, it’s normal to have these little crushes right?

eventually time came to rescue when tommy asked you if you wanted to accompany him in the dream smp

undoubtedly, you said yes

and for the few months during summer, it was where you two became even closer than before

however, once both of you two had to go back and attend school, it was harder to catch up with each other

even on calls together off stream, the occasional snapchat notification going off irked you in a way you couldn’t explain

only winter break was the small pause on your disappointment

but even then, it was a slow but steady hill of repressed sadness and frustration until early spring of the following year

you had hoped 2021 would be better than last year but after scrolling through twitter one day and seeing stans making rumors about how tommy had a crush on one of his classmates gave you the same pain you felt when school started last fall

you dreaded to look over at tommy’s most recent story time stream vod where all the gossip arose from; it was him stumbling over his words with the mention of a girl during a certain part

jealousy wasn’t the right word to describe the way you felt

you would never go out of your way to make tommy reciprocate the feelings you had for him

An Open Letter to the DSMP Fandom

Hello there! If you're seeing this post, I'm assuming you're a fan of DSMP and either create or consume fan content about it.

I am operating under the assumption that many of you are new to Tumblr, fandom, or both. I would rather assume ignorance than malice, as I can see myself making the same mistakes.

Creating content about the DSMP is great! Exploring ideas and creating things about them is something I really appreciate. However, there are a few issues that have come up. For one, fandom tagging.

If you look through the dsmp tag with regularity, you'll be familiar with this. Tagging your posts and creations with the dsmp tag is a great way to share it with other fans! But there are a few tags you should avoid using. While DSMP members may be Minecraft YouTubers, or MCYT, most people looking through the MCYT tag aren't looking for DSMP content. They would look in the DSMP tag for that. Same thing with Minecraft as a whole. People looking in the Minecraft tag aren't looking to consume content about the DSMP, they want content about builds and public servers, or about characters associated with Minecraft who aren't part of a series, like Steve and Alex. Additionally, some people don't want to see DSMP content, for whatever reason. This is valid. Please remember to tag your DSMP-related posts with DSMP so people can blacklist the tag and avoid content.

There is another, more serious issue related to tagging: trigger warnings. Some subjects can cause people to remember traumatic experiences, such as ab*se. This is especially important to remember given the current events on the DSMP. I will use cats as an example of how to tag things. If you're discussing cats in detail, like how they act, you would tag your post or content with tw cats. If cats are mentioned, but not talked about with much depth, you may tag it with tw cats mention or tw cats. It's always better to over-tag a post than under-tag it. Ab*se is something that a lot of real people have experience with, and while it is your right to discuss that with your peers, if you don't tag it appropriately, you could really hurt someone.

Note that this goes for both text and art posts. It's also common courtesy to put art that may trigger someone, like if it portrays violence or blood/gore, below a 'read more' so nobody sees it when they don't want to.

I understand that you may not be aware of this, or not have understood how tagging works prior to now, but it is very important to do this as to not hurt people.

I will add my conclusion here. I understand you aren't doing this to be malicious. I don't want to talk down to you, and if it feels that way, I am genuinely very sorry. I just want you to understand that other people do not have the same experiences as you, and I know when I was younger I definitely did not respect 'peers' the way I should have. It doesn't take a lot of effort to tag, and it could really help someone.

Now below the cut I go on a tangent about a personal suggestion: If you don't consume much other content outside DSMP, I highly suggest consuming at least a bit of other content, either as a point for comparison as to how harsh DSMP is compared to most other content or just as a breath of fresh air.

If you have the time for another series, many people here will suggest Hermitcraft (Season 7 specifically, since it's the current one). It's another series where people play Minecraft on a server together and have different interactions, but the tone is much lighter. If you don't have the energy for something that long and involved, it has been going on for a year after all and even the creators who don't upload as frequently have lots of episodes (they're usually 30 minutes or less instead of stream vods but still), there are still lots of other creators to watch.

If you still want another SMP (these are all names I've heard from friends so I can't give solid information), there is FruitSMP, EpicSMP, Shady Oaks SMP (I know this one is a server with some older YouTubers, hence the retirement-home name, I know CaptainSparklez is on there but not sure who else), One Life SMP, and certainly lots of others I'm not aware of. If you want a series, Naked and Scared is a long-running series where in every 'season', two people start a hardcore world and have specific restrictions on what they can do but they have a goal to achieve. I believe season 12 is the one I watched part of. You can watch it on ImpulseSV's channel, and as far as I'm aware all the seasons are independent, you just pick one and enjoy.

If you just want some lighthearted solo content, I'm not too familiar with most of the current creators, but LogDotZip seems to still be making some good content and CaptainSparklez, who I mentioned earlier, uploads fairly often. Lighthearted group content that isn't a long-running series, I again am not too familiar with current groups, but if you're willing to watch some old content, I (completely unbiased /j) suggest watching old SkyDoesMinecraft collab videos like Cops n Robbers. They're recorded with friends and are a lot of fun, though I haven't watched them in a while so they may have some problems.

It also might be a good idea to consume some content that isn't Minecraft-related. I don't consume much that isn't vaguely informative these days, but I'm certain you can find someone who can give you a recommendation.

Just find something to give yourself a breather.

Note that I would talk this way to someone of any age who I didn't think knew better. If you know better already and choose not to tag, I would no longer be nice.

oh god know I could never be an updates account. I don’t even know how they get half their information like how does one figure out that dream commented on some random tik tok??? I meant that I’ve been a person that has seen a tweet feom an updates account that dream is on some stream and gone to that stream. yeah I never know what’s going on cause I never have the energy to catch up with stuff I’ve missed but also I have this like need to know everything so I just have like half the information. I don’t even know how dts work on twt. like sometimes they tell people to off themselves in qrts/replies or like dm them probably too, which is so, so shitty. but yeah it’s kinda laughable how they have to censor all the words. but yeah no dts are not cool in the slightest. I’ve never gotten any of that because for the most part I have a very limited online presence and like I wouldn’t get to worried by it or anything but it’s such a shitty thing to do. god the kaveytfon thing was so ughh. and all I saw of it was clips and summary threads. yeah I get that. it’s a bit annoying cause some of my irls are gamer nerds that dislike dream cause “he cheated,” “he scripts manhunts,” “he’s bad at the game,” “he encourages his toxic stans,” and some other “anti” arguments. but what can you do. like I was just talking about minecraft once and one of them was like “oh but he so cheated” like yeah dude we’re well past that now these days we’re shitting on dream for making questionable sounds on a discord podcast /j. yeah like 100% I know dream can handle it and his friends will back him if needed I just feel really sad for him sometimes. maybe it’s just me cause I sometimes have annoyingly emotional reactions to things unnecessarily. bbh popped off with that one tweet on main.

Calling it university isn’t super common here and I don’t think most americans even know the difference. Honesty it’s more about what the school calls itself, so like theres Harvard University & Bowdoin College but you mainly refer to them by their names anyways.
