Some gift art for @thepurpah of her Vtuber fairy character. Honestly such a gorgeous design and I really really like how the wings turned out. Trying to scale back on over-shading my art too much.

“W-Whoa, that’s one realistic hand, there…!” For a split second, he had been about to take the outstretched hand - as it looked so much like a regular one - that was until he noticed the realistic blood covering the hand and how the hand…didn’t seem attached to a body…! “T-That’s so cool…! W-Where’d you find that…?!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“That’s because it is one, silly!”  Vivi giggles out almost nonchalantly as she just wiggles it around, holding this dismembered hand by its hanging wrist.  If one looked closely, it even appeared to be still fresh, as long as you could excuse the red food coloring staining its fingers.  “I had to convince one of our neighborly frankensteins if I could borrow a couple limbs for our Addams family cosplay.  Ya probably don’t remember Steve from our last halloween party, but he was a good sport about the entire thing.”
As if on cue, the lonesome hand animatedly flexes its digits, curling itself into the shape of a thumbs up.  It gave a light crack of its bones though, given it was still a tad bit old in its current age.  “Does the food coloring look all right to ya?  I had to make due with some of my ghostly husband’s kitchen supplies since theater blood always tends to be out of stock during this time of the Fall season.”  With the other still apparently sitting upon the front of her wooden home porch, Vivi leans her front onto her companion’s back; slithering her arms over his shoulders while still holding her prize.
“But… I almost fooled ya, yeah?”  She says.  Leaning her chin onto his shoulder, Vivi gives the other a mischievous grin that instant.  “This thing is sick!”

“Oh!  I think we have some old volumes upstairs detailing those types of fae.”  She claps her hands together that instant.  Straightening herself up from out of habit, she rolls a shoulder as she rises from her spot upon the counter.  “It just entirely depends on the forest type, of course.”
With a hand still settled upon the worn counter, it trails beside her as she moves and finds her way out through the little swinging gate that separated her and customers during the day.  Her dark blue scarf flicks behind her like a curious tail, moving with a slight sense of life that could’ve hardly been seen from behind her lil hiding spot.  “From my own personal experience in general, forest fae will sometimes be polite as long as ya respect their rules.  They have quite a thing for manners, and even more protectiveness for their home given this day and age.”  She giggles in reply.  “It just depends on what you’d be looking to catch though.  But we always have something for everyone at Tomb Tome.”
Tumblr media
“It makes sorting everything a bit of a hassle, but–,” she shrugs–, “Nothing is ever too old when there’s a brain wanting to learn something.  Are ya looking for something in the birch category or are we trying to search for a seasonal fae of sorts too?  Knowing their behavior is where you can find them best.”
Tumblr media
❝ Not really . Been a while since I stopped in one of these places , thought I'd look around before finishing up my errands for the day . ❞
Years of customer service taught the best form of flattery is honesty . Sure it's unusual to find a paranormal investigator around these parts but , all in all it makes the city a bit more lively in her book . Though one can only hope a keen eye like Vivi's can tell the difference between a fairy circle and a salt ring .
Regardless she's happy to strike up conversation , get to know people better instead of keeping to herself like back in her old town .
❝ Buuut , if you have anything insightful on forest faes here I'd greatly appreciate it . ❞

My top 7 Faerie stories/worlds atm 🦋
**Note, I am super dupes aware that I haven't read/watched everything, so please feel free to reblog/comment with recommendations!**
Faerie is the pulse of my heart, and my mind/spirit/etc. spends a LOT of time thinking about it, SO here's the most resonant of depictions of the realm/faeries themselves in my current opinion (and why).
(And not in any particular order:)
Elfhame, @hollyblack 's "Folk of the Air" series and all related books
Arda, Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and all related adaptations
"Suitor Armor" by @thepurpah
Studio Ghibli's take on spirits in Japanese folklore
Brian and Wendy Froud's take on Faerie
"Fraggle Rock"
"Tock the Gnome," by myself!
Thoughts:
Tumblr media
(Art by Rovina Cai, from "How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories")
I feel very much that Holly Black gets the lushness and richness of Faerie, plus the trickery of it, and that level of dangerous beauty - what attracts humanity to it, etc. How everything is in extremes, too, but also how parts of it echo the human experience - both in terms of courts, but also in terms of the heart, and the emotional impact of intense circumstances and intense feelings.
I am, admittedly, not all caught up yet since I haven't read her earlier works, but of course I recommend starting with "The Cruel Prince" and reading forward from there (the more recent "Stolen Heir Duology" having an extra special place in my esteem)!
(Also special shoutout to the fact that there are Nisse - Gnomes! - in the recent books, AND that her take on Redcaps is absolutely Orcish 💚)
(Also also, cw: Changelings. They can be a triggering/upsetting subject, considering how our concept of them as humans seems to have come about. She does make pretty heavy use of them, but not in the ways that one might expect, and always from a very emotionally-centered space - not a humans-abusing-potential-fae space.)
Tumblr media
So, Tolkien - yes, I am including the world of his works in this because even though he considered them religious and specifically-denominational, he took SO MUCH inspiration from folklore and faerie tales (do not even get me started on what got edited out of "The Silmarillion" istg) that Arda is not wholly Christian, from my Faerie-worshiping queer-ass faerie perspective thankyouverymuch. Not to mention what is being done in fandom with the faerie-races, especially the Dwarves and the Hobbits, AND what recent adaptations are opening up with the Orcs!! Obviously, his take on Faerie is a much more literally-grounded reality - they exist in the Earth-based world (as if Faerie has bled into what we expect Earth to be), they have magic (at least the Elves and Dwarves do) but it's both somehow super ethereal and super physical at once. And divinely connected, since the biggest magic in Middle-earth (or any part of Arda) comes from the lesser Gods - the Valar, and the Maiar who serve under them as well as from Big Sky Daddy Eru, but we're not talking about him right now. So that, to me, really speaks to the spiritual nature of Faerie too - which is always always always personally interesting to me, and Jrrt's take on the fae was absolutely foundational in my budding concept of them, before I even really thought about who they are in a conscious way.
I don't know where to recommend starting, since I got into the world through the Jackson films, first, and I wouldn't change my experience for anything because it's given me SO much. But in fandom, shoutout to the works of @conkers-thecosy (read her fics here!) as well as "A Long List of Happy Endings" by vicious_summer and "The Mushroom Mine" series by @chrononautintraining for Dwarf Stuff - and "Splint" by HelenaMarkos for Orc Stuff. Plus, as much as I know it's divisive, "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is - again - doing wonders about the Orcs AND doing very well by the Dwarves too, in my opinion, showing them as a fully realized and thriving people (though Dwarf women should still have beards, Amazon!! And there seems to be some confusion around how the name of Durin functions...)!! Available to stream on Prime, here.
Tumblr media
"Suitor Armor" takes place in a world that appears very similar to medieval Earth, and as such the worldbuilding itself doesn't feel very specifically Faerie - yet. However, with the main character having significant ties to the fae, and with the story still having space to explore their culture once the tale takes the characters there, I have faith that we are gonna see more of this take on Faerie specifically soon. In the meantime, what we have seen so far - how faerie magic works, how they relate to each other, etc. - rings true for me, and is lovely to behold, especially in the face of the tragedy around their circumstances in the Big Plot.
Free to read here (and coming to bookshelves in 2025!!).
Tumblr media
As for Studio Ghibli - Miyazaki's take on the spirits of Japanese folklore - which are absolutely Faerie - was SO formative for me growing up. I don't have anything else to say about that except that he's right!!
I recommend "Princess Mononoke," "Spirited Away" and "My Neighbor Totoro," particularly. All available to stream on Max right now (but buying physical media is better, and they're very likely available to rent other places, too).
Tumblr media
Brian and Wendy Froud's work has, of course, also been absolutely formative for me - especially when I started getting into Faerie properly. Their work doesn't require much commentary either - they're just correct 💗 Nothing I've experienced has ever contradicted what I've read in their books, and I feel like their work really, really gets the energy of the fae and the liminality of their existence. And that there is kindness, and light, as well as danger.
I recommend "Trolls" and "Faeries' Tales," to start with, and of course the quintessential "Faeries" by Brian Froud and Alan Lee, which started it all.
(Also, considering what's below, special honorary shoutout to their work on "The Dark Crystal." Definite overlap there and absolutely counts.)
Tumblr media
Obviously there's some crossover with The Muppets here, considering they come from the same studio, BUT if we're looking at just "Fraggle Rock" on its own - absolutely. Though a very different take than those mentioned above, if you're looking for the whimsy and delight at the heart of the fae, the Fraggles have it.
Both the original series and the reboot are currently available to stream on AppleTV.
Tumblr media
Okay, and my own! What I'm doing with the world of "Tock the Gnome" is a little bit different - again, we're looking at a realm that isn't free from some of the physical bounds we find on Earth - but in its vast history there is Faerie at its purest, and the characters are on a Big Quest that will be instrumental in restoring the realm to what one would expect of Faerieland (all wrapped up in a body-positive, sapphic-presenting queer romance, btw). My focus is on Gnomes and Orcs, in particular, since the fact that they're also fae is a big part of my message. Recognizing that, as well as recognizing the importance of connectedness between people and the balance of that and personal sovereignty, and how damage to those things might impact the whole of a magical realm.
All pages available to read for free here, across several platforms (with print issues available here).

“And lose on a bet ya set over lunch, China Cabinet?”
One could faintly hear the plastic clicking of her controller getting a smidge bit louder with how hard she’s been pressing into the poor buttons.  Her little player character was jumping all around by the time it floated back into the game, only taking enough courage to hit the fellow’s CPU teammate.  You can hear Mario softly screaming over the flat screen tv’s speakers.
“Pbbbt, fat chance!”  She blows a raspberry back.  A faint shot of a brisk chill shoots up the other’s exposed arm.  “I am not ordering takeout again.  Ya and Arthur already got a plate of common, weird favorite snacks, and I ain’t planning on trying more of them today.”
Tumblr media
“Besides, ya still have that I.O.U. tab to clear out by the end of this.”  Vivi says.  “I can read out the list while I play, too.”

Chai couldn't help but snicker as the other complained about losing. Meanwhile, he was rhythmically mashing buttons & flicking joysticks to a beat that only he could hear, only slipping up slightly as the bluenette leaned up against him.

MOVED
Hey all!
I am trying to become more active on Tumblr what with all social media shuffling (stupid X), but after looking through this blog and the sheer number of posts and how it would take me forever to organize and archive stuff I have just elected to move blogs for a fresh, clean start!
This blog will still be here as it has a lot of memories and old art but I will be posting over on my new Tumblr (over at @thepurpah) from here on out!

😮 ; What is your favorite thing about your muse? Vivi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
((To keep it short and simple, since I'd probably write several walls worth of how much I love about my icy muse? One thing I love about Vivi is despite being pretty off the walls and quite an intense character she can be with playing around with other people around her, she can be quite the most loving and in tune person when it comes to caring about those around her. She knows she can be a handful. She knows she does push people's buttons when she has her loud personality to push against another with the intent on keeping herself authentic as possible. However, she also knows when to tone it down a little when she sees if someone might get upset or accidentally hurt by her intensity.
Vivi wants to have fun with her friends, with her entire being just being loving and all. She gets super intense when she gets happy or excited. Not everyone can handle that, but she tries to be flexible where possible while trying not to water down herself for anyone. If she likes you? She wants you around and you will know it. She's an oddball, but sometimes you gotta love them for what they are though.))

“.. Yeah.”  His shoulders drooped downwards a little as he sat there on his piece of cardboard, practically having his ear being talked off as this young looking child seemed to get a tad excited sharing her own tales of adventure.  He wouldn’t lie and say that he couldn’t help the involuntary flinch that made his skin tense at the other’s loud and near exaggerated gesture of her arms.  “If I was an actual ghoul–,” Arthur, as he allows himself that instant to put his wrench down beside him as he spoke, idly grasps at his chin–, “would you or your… brother have been able to see me if I wasn’t working on this car here?”  Eh, as much as this kid seemed a bit off on the eyes, it still never hurt to at least play along until he got to the bottom of why she’s all by herself.
Besides, even if she seemed pretty friendly, he was still a stranger who had to act on good faith.  Who knows how long she probably wandered off from home, and the police probably wouldn’t even know where to start with this poor kid if she didn’t seem too local to the area.  Weird energies were always his home’s motto, but not every monstrous citizen would know how to deal with a kid like this.  He better keep them on track if he was going to call her caretaker or something.
Might as well ask.  She’s at least talking to him, right?  She didn’t seem interested in a glass of water, but it's better than nothing at the rate this query was going.  People would always open up to him, anyways…
Tumblr media
After another pause in silence that had left the mechanic trying to piece his thoughts together the more Haba continued to talk, he said, “Eh.. I can’t argue with that regardless.  I might as well be pale as a sheet to you, huh?”  Arthur settles his hands onto the oily stains of his slightly faded yoga pants hips (hey if he can work at home, he will do it comfortably).  “But as a weirdo to another, I meant to ask was.. Why are you out here on your own?  Doesn’t your brother know where you are?”
"Well, that is not much of an answer then… You like being stuck, but you don't like being dead? How can you tell? You just told be you have never been dead!" Arthur is a weird man. Haba likes him. But how would she explain him why his reasoning is a weird one. Haba thinks and listens, while the other nervously tries to explain about his fear of death. She imitates his shaking of the wrists, curiously, but finds it an empty gesture for her. "I hate soap. It makes the skin weird and tastes bad. But I only know because I have to bathe with soap. If I didn't bathe, I would never have been soaped. Maybe you'll like death? You could become a vampire! Or a ghoul! Or a ghost! But then you cannot eat… And food is nice."
"Of course I am right. I am a very skilled hunter. Well, not in the cities, but I can tell you I even hunted down an anteater, when I was barely a few weeks old and it had claws that can debowel a jaguar! They are so big!" Haba stretches her arms wide to show Arthur the size of the animal. "My brother was full for a month!"
"What friend?" Haba tilts her head. "I was just bored. I don't like the grand cities. They are big and humans are so many and scurrying around so quickly. It's scary. And London is wet, too. And cold."
"You're weird. Why do you think I am waiting for anyone?," Haba asks, honestly and openly confused about Arthur's question.

So this was the ol’ Playtime Company she’s been told all about, huh?  It was far much bigger than she initially saw in all the very few blurry photos from some of the articles she found researching about this abandoned factory.  However, even with all the fact-finding and countless interviewing with some of the locals that lived in the area, the investigator could only dig into the history of this place so much before the rumors would quickly overtake her own poor internet search box; making it hard to tell what was true or what a dumb 15 year old troll decided to waste her time on reddit with an out of whacky horror story about monsters you’d normally tell to your friends over a campfire with.  The WayBack Machine she used to look at the company's (way outdated) website didn’t do much to answer the questions as to why it got shut down in the first place.  Even then, the links it once had were taken down anyways, be it through a weird lawsuit between higher ups or someone getting injured on the job.
At the top of her head, the only few sourced articles she could actually find online involved there being a murder on site or it could’ve been someone falling into some machine that wasn’t OSHA approved and the news article made the title more dramatic for clicks.  It’s all she could really remember, if she hadn’t forgotten to write it down earlier like she was supposed to.  Either way, Vivi was hired by a 99 News Station (aka a guy who was too chicken to meet up with her like he was supposed to to get the hottest take for his own news story) to check out this seemingly haunted toy mill, she had a job to do.  It wasn’t like she really had anything else better to do this weekend besides babysitting another angsty ghost that month.
Tumblr media
Long since entering the already broken into entrance of this bizarre building and passing its messily kept front desk, this dame had been greeted to the heart of this eerily silent place, the main attraction she had actually gotten some concrete information on: the Huggy Wuggy statue in all its former glory.  Ignoring the crumbling debris and bloodied toys that littered the posters and once colorfully tiled floors, and staring up at this fuzzy creature, she could easily see this place once being a heaven to those young and bright, wanting a break from a long day of schoolwork.  It had once been lived and loved in too, with the rugs stretched out before her being unkempt and rotting away from how long the bugs may have had time to settle into its fading red and blue carpeting.  Where had all the time gone?  Why did the company suddenly drop this place to the ground to slowly wither away?  This looming Huggy looked more well taken care of, with its fur appearing more looked after than the rest of this room combined, and she swore she thought she saw it breathing for just a moment too.
“.. Huh.”   She spoke aloud to herself, allowing her words to just to fill in the agonizing silence.  Her voice felt out of place and loud, yet echoing off the walls her presence claimed itself a space free of another’s judgment.  A free hand quickly taps at the corner of her chin.  “Ya probably don’t get many visitors much anymore these days, ey, big guy?  Ya’ve probably got more stories to tell than your pals upstairs, huh?”  Crossing her arms then, she tilts her head a little with an inquisitive stare.
She brows furrows for an instant.  “Hmm..”  Vivi hummed.  “.. Well, if only I could wake ya up then.  I don’t have any jerky for ya this time, sadly.”
Playtime Co. A factory that has had many rumors spread about it. Most of them regarding how the place closed it's doors after becoming such a popular factory making so many beloved characters. Some say that there was something shady going on behind the scenes, something that was never properly brought to the light of day to the public but was enough for it to force head operators of the factory to close it's doors. Others say that they didn't treat their workers kind enough and thus they stopped working there. Due to the decline in work force regarding employees, at least ones that were hired, this reasoning seems to be the most popular one. Though it's not one that a lot of people believe.
Truthfully the public does not know what to truly believe. The closure was very sudden. So many of the employees that once worked there were never seen again. Some even reported hearing odd noises and seeing odd things when they went near the factory. Including the fact that there almost seemed to be metallic shutter doors covering the main entrance. Ones that became damaged over time due to neglect and what one could only assume to be teens messing with the doors for one reason or another.
As these doors became more damaged, the way in became larger. Though many teens and other curious people like to come to this once great factory to explore the outside, some can't help but let their curiosity lead them inside. Some say you never come back out once you enter. But those are rumors...or at least one would hope so.
It's more likely to get lost in the woods surrounding the place. God forbid you should have a poor sense of direction while trying to reach the factory in the first place.
Though within this factory, an entity prowls. Lurking in the shadows, making his rounds to check on the various toys in their usual locations. Though this time around...something feels different. He could sense someone else lurking within the factory. An outsider, he can assume. Another curious soul who decided to enter a place that fell from grace, in his eyes, long ago. He decides to see if his senses are right and if so, observe to see why they're here.
