What Caused Roosevelt & Taft To Split In The Republican Party
Taft, Wilson, and the Legacy of the Progressive Movement
DAVID KENNETH
Theodore Roosevelt served as the president of the United States from 1901, following the assassination of William McKinley, to 1909, when he announced his retirement. During the early 20th century, the Progressive Movement swept the nation. Calling for social reform that included an increase in government regulation of business, this movement transcended political parties. The 1912 election season featured Roosevelt, a former and future Republican, battling party-nominee William Howard Taft for control of the party faithful. Because Taft refused to accept the national trend toward Progressive movement policies, Roosevelt returned to politics from retirement, perhaps costing the Republicans the election.

A Memorable Convention
The Bull Moose Party And Election Of 1912
Outraged by Tafts actions, Roosevelt, proclaiming thathe was as strong as a bull moose, founded the ProgressiveRepublican Party, or Bull Moose Party, so thathe himself could run against Taft on a third-party ticket in thepresidential election of 1912.The Democrats, meanwhile, nominated Progressive Woodrow Wilson, who was a southerner by birth but had moved north to become thepresident of Princeton University and, later, governor of New Jersey. Theproper and respectable Wilson championed a progressive package hecalled the New Freedom to tackle trusts and the hightariff. Once again, former labor organizer Eugene V. Debs enteredthe race as the Socialist Party nominee.
What Were President Tafts Views On Tariffs
William Howard Taft for lower tariffs. His acceptance of a bill that failed to significantly decrease rates caused him to lose the support of the progressive wing of his party. The Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act dropped rates in general only by about 5 percent, and it raised rates on such items as iron ore and coal.

Tafts Early Life And Career
William Howard Taft was born on September 15, 1857, in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father was Alphonso Taft, a prominent Republican attorney who served as secretary of war and attorney general under President Ulysses S. Grant, then ambassador to Austria-Hungary and Russia under President Chester A. Arthur. The younger Taft attended Yale University before studying law at the University of Cincinnati. He was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1880 and entered private practice. In 1886, Taft married Helen Nettie Herron, the daughter of another prominent local lawyer and Republican Party activist; the couple would have three children.
Did you know? As U.S. president from 1909 to 1913 and chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1921 to 1930, William Howard Taft became the only man in history to hold the highest post in both the executive and judicial branches of the U.S. government.
How Did Roosevelt Criticize Wilsons New Freedom
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Roosevelt stood for a program of New Nationalism favoring efficiency. Wilsons New Freedom platform criticized Roosevelts New Nationalism program as one that supported regulated monopoly, gave too much economic power to the federal government and failed to support small businesses, competition and free enterprise.

William Taft: Campaigns And Elections
The Campaign and Election of 1908:
After his 1904 electoral victory, Theodore Roosevelt promised publicly not to seek the presidency again in 1908. While he later regretted that decision, he felt bound by it and vigorously promoted William Howard Taft as his successor. Both Nellie Taft and Roosevelt had to persuade Taft to make the race. Even with the presidency in his reach, Taft much preferred the U.S. Supreme Court chief justice appointment.
It was generally expected that Taft would be Roosevelt’s man in the White House, and Taft himself vowed to continue Roosevelt’s progressive policies. Still, up to the last minute before Taft’s nomination at the Republican Party convention in Chicago, Nellie Taft feared that Roosevelt might announce his bid for a second elected term. It almost happened on the second day of the convention, when a spontaneous and wild demonstration produced a forty-nine minute stampede for Rooseveltthe longest-lasting demonstration that had ever occurred at a national political convention. Only when Roosevelt sent word via Senator Henry Cabot Lodge that he was not available did the convention nominate Taft on the first ballot. The final count gave Taft 702 votes in a field of seven nominees. The Democrats once again nominated William Jennings Bryan, the twice-defeated candidate who still personified the populist politics of the Democratic Party and the moral fervor of its “silverite” wing.

Tafts Path To The White House
In early 1900, President William McKinley called Taft to Washington and tasked him with setting up a civilian government in the Philippines, which had become a U.S. protectorate after the Spanish-American War . Though hesitant, Taft accepted the post of chairman of the Second Philippine Commission with the knowledge that it would position him well to advance further in national government. Tafts sympathetic administration in the Philippines marked a dramatic departure from the brutal tactics used there by the U.S. military government since 1898. Beginning with the drafting of a new constitution and the creation of the post of civilian governor , Taft improved the island economy and infrastructure and allowed the people at least some voice in government. Though sympathetic to the Filipino people and popular among them, he believed they needed considerable guidance and instruction before they could be capable of self-rule, and predicted a long period of U.S. involvement; in fact, the Philippines would not gain independence until 1946.

Answers To Review Questions
The major difference between Roosevelts New Nationalism and Wilsons New Freedom concerned the candidates beliefs about the necessary size of the federal government. Wilson believed that a small federal government could keep bad businesses in check while allowing the country to grow. Roosevelt, in contrast, believed that the country required a large and involved federal government to safeguard the interests of the American people.
Wilsons actions were limited by his belief in his New Freedom platform, which promised voters a small government. Still, he took a number of steps in the first year of his presidency to shore up the economy and push back against destructive trusts. With those goals accomplished, he largely left the Progressive agenda alone. As the 1916 election season approached, however, Wilson realized that his hands-off policy was not endearing him to voters, and he ended his first term in a flurry of Progressive legislation that reminded the voting public of all he could do for them.

He also proposes that Congress adopt a constitutional amendment that would permit the collection of personal federal income taxes.

A tariff is a tax paid on imports or exports. The Act began as the Payne Proposal, which sought to lower tariffs on goods coming into the United States. Supported by Taft and his progressive Republican friends, who sought to limit the power of big business, it became law in 1909.

Secondly, why did the signing of the Payne Aldrich Tariff angered progressives? The act was signed enthusiastically by Taft in 1909, who believed that the compromise would preserve party unity. Although the Payne–Aldrich Tariff Act did very little to affect the current status of tariffs, it angered many Democrats, Progressives, and Progressive Republicans because it did not solve the tariff issue.
In this regard, what is the cartoonist suggesting about the effects of the Payne Aldrich tariff on American industry?
The compromise Payne–Aldrich Tariff Act had the effect of reducing tariff rates but also enacted a corporation tax. The Payne–Aldrich Tariff Act split the Republican party. President Taft alienated both the Progressive and conservative Republicans and gained a reputation for being weak and indecisive.

Who Did Roosevelt Choose As Successor As President
3.9/5
Roosevelt had tapped his Secretary of War, William Howard Taft, to become his successor, and Taft defeated Democrat William Jennings Bryan in the general election. They also favored the popular election of federal and state judges and opposed the appointing of judges by the President or state governors.
Likewise, why was Theodore Roosevelt a good president? He remains the youngest person to become President of the United States. What did Theodore Roosevelt do that brought him to national prominence?
– He led a volunteer brigade called the Rough Riders in the battle at San Juan Hill in Cuba. How did Rooseveltcreate a modern presidency? – He believed that the federal gov’t should step in when the states faltered.
The Final Vestiges Of Progressivism
As the 1916 election approached, Wilsons focus on foreign affairs, as well as the natural effect of his small government agenda, left the 60 percent of the American public who had not voted for him the first time disinclined to change their minds and keep him in office. Realizing this, Wilson began a flurry of new Progressive reforms that impressed the voting public and ultimately proved to be the last wave of the Progressive Era. Some of the important measures that Wilson undertook to pass included the Federal Farm Act, which provided oversight of low-interest loans to millions of farmers in need of debt relief; the Keating-Owen Child Labor Act, which, although later deemed unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, prohibited the interstate distribution of products by child workers under the age of fourteen; and the Adamson Act, which put in place the first federally mandated eight-hour workday for railroad workers.
Wilsons actions in 1916 proved enough, but barely. In a close presidential election, he secured a second term by defeating former New York governor Charles Evans Hughes by a scant twenty-three electoral votes, and less than 600,000 popular votes. Influential states like Minnesota and New Hampshire were decided by less than four hundred votes.

What law passed on August 1909 by the US Congress?
In , Congress passed the Payne Aldrich Tariff Act, which provided for free entry to the United States of all Philippine products except rice, sugar, and tobacco. Rice imports were subjected to regular tariffs, and quotas were established for sugar and tobacco.

BREAKING: Trump Vacation Guest Posted SELFIE With the “NUCLEAR FOOTBALL”
America’s nuclear codes are the latest attraction at Trump’s elitist Mar-a-Lago club. One of Trump’s “Winter White House” guests took a selfie with the carrier of the nuclear football suitcase.
We’re just a few weeks into the Orange Tyrant’s presidency, and we’ve already seen how careless Team Trump can be. But having the holder of the nuclear football parade around like an attraction at a county fair is an outrage.
The “nuclear football” is formally called thePresidential Emergency Satchel. It contains everything that is needed to launch nuclear weapons.
The man who took the picture with the “football” holder is named Richard DeAgazio. He’s a wealthy Palm Beach businessman and Trump voter who paid for the privilege of being a club member at Mar-a-Lago.
For one, this is the kind of pay-to-play corruption we’ve been sounding the alarm about. Pay the exorbitant price to join Trump’s exclusive beach club, and who knows, maybe you can take a selfie with the “football” too!
DeAgazio posted the selfie in question to his Facebook page, but his account has since been deactivated. No doubt he had to shut it down after getting bombarded with questions about national security.
Play loose with fire and you’re going to get burned. America’s nuclear football needs to be treated with the utmost care and seriousness – not turned into a photo-shoot opportunity for Trump’s rich friends.
China has already threatened nuclear war with the U.S. over the South China Sea. Trump needs to get his nuclear security together or else we’re all in danger.
When on the road, a SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) is used to discuss security issues; Trump did not (WH File Photo) http://pic.twitter.com/6Q5za6Ue6p
— West Wing Reports (@WestWingReport) February 13, 2017
Contrast here is everything, too. Obama would always take the necessary security protocols when he wasn’t in the Situation Room, but Trump just lets it all hang out at Mar-a-Lago.
Honestly, Trump’s made blunder after blunder when it comes to America’s nukes. He’s already fired the people in charge of our nuclear arsenal, leaving our command structure vulnerable.
Paying member of Mar-A-Lago takes photo of Trump advisers using cell phone flashlights to inspect apparently classified docs with Abe: http://pic.twitter.com/BNZJnjAuOw
— Natasha Bertrand (@NatashaBertrand) February 13, 2017
The Orange Tyrant needs to conduct security business in an appropriate location. Not on the patio of a restaurant where his rich friends can take selfies with the holder of the nuclear football.
How many blunders does it take to get to impeachment? We’re currently in the middle of finding out.
Please share this story far and wide on Facebook. The American people need to hear about this debacle.
