ROAD TRIP - DAY NINE - Part Four.One United Arab Emirates Air Tram I am claustrophobic AND afraid of heights so riding high above the River Thames in an enclosed capsule is not my idea of fun, but I left my family in Greenwich as I wasn’t feeling well. On the way home I walked past the UAE Air Tram and I was so tired I thought the idea of sitting for 20 minutes sounded like heaven. My mind was so exhausted that I kind of forgot about my phobias for the moment. I found myself resting comfortably inside the capsule. It was windy. It was wobbling. My fears and phobias came rushing back but it was too late. I did enjoy the views. And it was a bargain. 8 pounds for a 20 minute ride. It’s not the London Eye, but it’s a fun little jaunt. Even for the faint of heart. Our home is surrounded by trails and scenes like this...Alexandra Palace is our back garden, the Woodland Walk leading to Highgate Woods is at the top of our road, Queens Wood at the bottom. ROAD TRIP - DAY NINE - Part Three Greenich Meantime You’ve all heard of Greenich meantime right? Well, this is where it’s from. The meridian line in Greenwich represents the Prime Meridian of the world, Longitude Zero (0° 0' 0"). Every place on the Earth is measured in terms of its angle east or west from this line. Since 1884, the Prime Meridian has served as the reference point for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). ROAD TRIP - DAY NINE - Part Two Tea Time We spent the afternoon enjoying the English tradition of high tea. We went to L’Orangerie in Greenich which is a tea room located in the Fan Museum. It was a super value. If you get the full tea you will have more than enough to eat. We did a couple of full teas then added on smaller portions. I had a lovely fruit tea, but my sister-in-law had a smokey tea that evoked a whiskey smell. The food was great. The tea was great and the setting was beautiful. I highly recommend L’Orangerie for high tea while in London. ROAD TRIP - DAY NINE - Part One - Greenwich We stayed in the Greenwich neighborhood along the River Thames. Great views and a quick jaunt into central London. Today we explored the center of Greenich. Greenwich is the home to the Curry Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Greenich Meantime line. Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship. She was one of the last tea clippers to be built as well as one of the fastest. The ship was named after Nannie Dee in Robertt Burns’ poem Tam o’ Shanter. The ship's bears a white carving of a bare-breasted Nannie Dee with long black hair holding a grey horse's tail in her hand. In the poem she wore a linen sark that was cutty, or too short. Cutty Sark is listed as part of the British National Historic Fleet. We had lunch at the wonderful Greenich Market. Full of so many good food choices plus handcrafted art, jewelry, house wares, plants. You can find everything there.
