suburban legends - in depth of a theory that the song is written about matthew gray gubler

this theory was made by me and rafa (@bendthwrules on twitter) cause we’re both delusional and have lots of free time apparently lol please take this lightly this is just to have fun. if you have any thoughts to share or add to our theory dont be shy !

first and foremost, we’ll start with a timeline then dive in to analyze the lyrics! it all starts with taylor’s infamous 4th of july parties, as most of you probably already know, matthew was in one of her parties in 2013, she threw the party at her house in rhode island.

on july 3rd, matthew tweeted that his next stop was new england, later that day, he took a photo with a fan during a flight to connecticut. the rumors that he was at her party started when he posted pictures with face paint and sparklers and people started to notice similarities between his and taylor’s pictures, he later deleted said pictures.

for reference, first are the pictures he posted and the pictures taylor took with other friends on the same occasion.

later on, we got this picture of the of them together, confirming that he was at her party indeed. (i can’t remember who posted this so if you remember please let me know)

his attendance on taylor’s independence party sparked rumors of a possible romance, although they didn’t officially date, it’s common knowledge that they did have a fling (also for the sake of the theory we’ll accept that as true lol).

let’s fast forward to 300 (and almost 65) days later, a new movie premieres at the fantasia international film festival on june of 2014, the movie is suburban gothic. and this was the starting point for me and rafa i mean suburban gothic… suburban legends…

taylor announced her first pop album ever, 1989, on a yahoo worldwide livestream on august 18th, 2014. by the time she announced it, of course, the album was already finished and the tracks it would have were already determined so anything taylor wrote after that, wouldn’t be in the original version of 1989.

our grand theory is that the premier of matthew’s new movie, suburban gothic, made taylor think back on her (very very) brief relationship with him, therefore, inspiring her to write suburban legends, a direct reference to the movie title.

without further ado, let’s get to the lyrics!!

taylor start the song by singing

“You had people who called you on unmarked numbers

In my peripheral vision”

which led us to associating it to mgg’s previous girlfriend and also his co-star in suburban gothic, kat dennings. since they were doing a movie together, they probably were in contact a lot and that’s possibly what taylor was referencing in this verse.

she then goes

“I let it slide like a hose on a slippery plastic summer

All was quickly forgiven”

keep in mind all the 4th of july parties are in the middle of summer, this verse could be a direct reference to that since the very first rumors started with a party in the middle of summer.

“And you kiss me in a way that's gonna screw me up forever”

do i even need to say anything else?

“I had the fantasy that maybe our mismatched star signs would surprise the whole school”

when sharing my thoughts on the lyrics with rafa, i reminded her of what taylor wrote in state of grace “just twin fire signs”, this could be about taylor and the person she’s singing about sharing star signs (of the elements fire) but also about them being twin flames (or at least she thought so). just like she purposefully mentioned matching signs in previous lyrics, i do believe she would mention mismatched signs, mind you that taylor is a sagittarius and matthew is a pisces.

that verse could also be a metaphor about how would people view their relationship, they are from different parts of the industry and didn’t share many mutual friends. “surprising the whole school” could be about how shocked the general public would be about them being together.

“When I ended up back at our class reunion walking in with you

You'd be more than a chapter in my old diaries with the pages ripped out”

here i want to highlight the expression “you’d be” and in the previous verse “i had a fantasy”, when using these expressions, taylor is taking a position of someone imagining something, someone wondering even daydreaming about what things would be like. all the other theories about who this song is about revolve around people who taylor actually had a relationship with like harry styles and it just doesn’t make sense to me why she’d be having a fantasy of how things would be like when she knew how things were. personally, this verses make much more sense when placed in a context of someone who taylor didn’t have a real relationship with, like matthew.

“I know that you still remember”

if we’re starting from the assumption that she wrote the song almost a year later looking back at what happened between them, this verse could be how she is directly talking to him, she is remembering what happened and she knows he still remember as well.

“When you told me we'd get back together”

this could possibly hint to him wanting to get back together with her, wanting to actually evolve into a true relationship.

“I broke my own heart 'cause you were too polite to do it”

although i think there’s something almost sarcastic to this verse (like you were sooo polite you couldn’t even break my heart 🥴), i still do think it makes a connection to the previous verse i mentioned, perhaps he wanted to have a real relationship with her and when she realized it wouldn’t work, she had to break her own heart so she could move on.

and some other verses that just scream matthew gray gubler (iykyk) but i can’t quite put into words like “You were so magnetic it was almost obnoxious” or “We were born to be national treasures”.

well, that was too much ! i think it’s pretty clear that i’m not the most skilled writer (😭) but this was just to share the thoughts that were making me go crazy. huuuuge thanks to rafa cause she was the one to make me stop and think about it also helped me with the writing process and also is big on timeline cause she’s been on both fandoms a long time, ty love 🩷.

To me it's the fact she deliberately sang her heart out, her fears, perceptions, anger and deceptions.

But what strikes me the most is that, despite everything, she's now left it all behind. She went through the stages of grief, accepted the story as it was, and now she's leaving everything behind.

It's done, it's not something she can change, and she's ok.

Karma: The Long Lost Taylor Swift Album

The long-lost album ‘Karma’ is potentially one of the biggest Taylor Swift conspiracy theories out there. But what is it? Where did it come from? Could it possibly be true?

It is believed by some that Taylor created an album called ‘Karma’, set to release in 2016 (all images above are fan-made or photo shoots). This album was set to be after 1989, but was scrapped to create reputation after the Kanye West and Kim Kardashian drama.

If you’re unaware of the drama, here’s a quick summary. In 2009, Kanye interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech at the VMA’s. But after that, she forgave him and they were friendly up until February of 2016. That’s when Kanye released a song called ‘Famous’, where he says the lines “I feel like me and Taylor might still have s€x/Why?/I made that b*tch famous.”

Taylor spoke out about this lyric and said she did not consent to it. In July of 2016, Kanye’s wife, Kim Kardashian, released videos on her Snapchat in which Taylor seemed to approve the lyric over the phone. Taylor then stopped making public appearances and deleted all social media for the rest of 2016. This sparked the creation of reputation.

EVIDENCE OF KARMA

In the ‘The Man’ music video, a wall of graffiti is shown. Spray painted on it are the words reputation, Speak Now, 1989, Red, Fearless, and Karma. The first five are albums that are her Taylor’s Version re-recordings, but Karma seems out of place. There is also a picture of a scooter with a cross over it, referencing her leaving Scooter Braun and her old record label. There is also a sign that says “MISSING: IF FOUND, RETURN TO TAYLOR SWIFT”, referencing her stolen albums that she didn’t have the full rights to due to Scooter Braun. This all makes sense, except Karma, which is in the very middle.

Taylor started wearing a lot of orange during 2016-2017, which is believed to be the color that represents the Karma album, similarly to how pink represents Lover, gold represents Fearless, purple represents Speak Now, etc. 

In the Look What You Made Me Do music video, she wore an orange outfit while swinging in a bird cage, which may have hinted at the “in the vault” status of Karma. Also, LWYMMD features the lyric “All I think about is karma.”

In Taylor’s 73 Questions interview with Vogue, she said “Karma is real.” Many think that this is an Easter egg. For example, in Taylor’s “30 Things I Learned Before Turning 30” essay for Elle, she hid a lyric of her song Daylight, which would be released in the future as part of the Lover album. 

Taylor had been consistently releasing albums every other year up until 2016. 

2006 - Debut

2008 - Fearless

2010 - Speak Now

2012 - Red

2014 - 1989

In 2016, she didn’t release any music to continue the pattern. This leads people to believe that Karma was meant to be released, but was scrapped to create reputation, which would release in 2017.

Some people believe that Taylor may release Karma (Taylor’s Version) as a part of her Taylor’s Version series. 

Some people think she will simply release it as an album by itself, perhaps TS12.

GAYLOR THEMES IN THE 1989 VAULT

‘Now That We Don’t Talk’: has a LOT of falling for your best friend lyrics. similar to songs that are about dianna from other albums pre-1989 and post-1989. this song feels very kaylor but because of the time-frame (and the fact that it has such a strong reoccurring break-up theme to it) this song has to be about dianna. i interpret this song as taylor wanting to be out with dianna but something got in the way (dianna being scared or her label saying no) so the relationship had to end

‘Suburban Legends’: this song was the original gold rush. taylor talks a lot about her love interest being desirable and everyone wanting them. sounds familiar…

oh. right. gorgeous…. the song that was undeniably written about karlie kloss. interesting!

this line could be about her going to the victoria secrets fashion shows where karlie was modeling and not wanting anything to do with anyone but karlie. that seems like a pretty big reach but that was my first thought when i heard this line.

now this could also be a reach but…

but that’s all i’ll say about that. this line was also reminding me of when taylor said in an interview talking about the vs angels, “and theyre all wearing these robes by the way, its like an actual fantasy” and when she said she spends a lot of time in each models trailer 👀 maybe this was a self call out or maybe karlie did the same thing taylor did…

and lastly

‘Is It Over Now?’: lots of “i hear about you being with other people and it makes me mad” vibes. this song gives dianna, the toxic push and pull type relationship. this line could have been about when dianna told taylor to watch glee just for taylor to see dianna having on-screen sex with another girl. at first listen i thought it was a kaylor song but now i’m almost 99% sure its a swiftgron song.

The Lover House that was once filled with so many memories it's now gone for good, burned completely to the ground, and as we approach the release, we're now getting into a cold, aseptic hallway.

Years from now, we will still be here, existing in our small corner of the internet. While others will slowly lose interest in her or in her music. 

Maybe they will no longer speculate when she settles down with someone maybe they will not find her as intriguing or interesting without all the drama surrounding her, but we will still be here sharing.

Maybe it will be with nostalgia ‘Hey, remember when she released Me! Out now! On lesbian visibility day? or when she talked about kissing lips so scarlet it was maroon or hundreds of things in her songs and pictures.

The Gaylors have existed for over a decade now despite all the backlash and will continue to exist for decades. 

In a way, we are her most loyal fans as we have remained loyal to her and her music despite her never truly protecting or acknowledging us. Will the others still stay if she does the same to them? 

Maybe or maybe not. I, for one, will love and support her till my dying breath. 

We will continue to scream ‘I love you’ to her no matter what. Even if we will never hear one in her silence.

FNAF MOVIE SPOILERS!

The FNaF movie springlocks are completely different than anything we have seen in the games.

The only visuals of springlocks we have ever seen were in the "Silver Eyes" graphic novel. In the novel, the springlocks look similar to the movie, which means that in both visual adaptations of springlock suits, Scott Cawthon has gone with the clawlike design. This could possibly be Scott Cawthon telling us that this is the design he had in mind when making the games/writing "The Silver Eyes" Trilogy.

Ignoring the large metal rod going through the middle there are many unsafe design choices, such as, the fact that there are actual claws in the suit. What purpose would claws have in holding back animatronic parts? This leads me to my theory, what if the springlock suits, (In the movie canon) are intended to fail? William Afton possibly meant for the springlock suits to be worn by untrained employees and fail, thus causing remnant to be extracted, like a less advanced version of the remnat extractor from the beginning of the movie.

Another point worth noting is that the springlock suit in the movie looks very similar to Ella in "The Silver Eyes", Eleanor in the "Fazbear's Frights" books, and possibly a prototype of Circus Baby. This would reinforce my theory that the springlock suits are meant to fail because Circus Baby and all the other Funtime animatronics are meant to kill.

Edit: This theory was written the second I finished the movie. Since then I have gotten a lot more evidence towards this theory from reviewing the movie's content. Such as this image.

At first, I just thought "Hey what a cool Easter egg!" Which it might be, but I have some theories. What if the Sparky the Dog costume is the movie variant of one of the mediocre melodies? Or it could possibly be the same case as Carlton in "The Silver Eyes" or the costumes in the saferoom in the fangame "DSaF 1". The other two suits with bodies in them are probably the same as what would have happened to Carleton if Charlie did not save him.

William Afton is a notorious CHILD murderer, so why are there adults in the suits? The suits may be springlock suits, and he may have kidnapped them so that he could extract remnant for his experiments

The purple animatronic is very odd because that shade specifically is familiar. Most people think William Afton whenever they see purple in FNaF, but this animatronic is very reminiscent of Shadow Freddy. The only thing wrong with this theory is the widely believed theory that Shadow Freddy is caused by Agony or Shadow Remnant, but nothing outright confirms that in the games Shadow Freddy is not a physical animatronic like the other ones. -10/29/23

The whole Dusty Springfield x Taylor Swift theory goes so crazy and is SOOO interesting to me! I firmly believe we emulate, respect, and draw inspiration from artists we can relate to or feel represent our most cherished ideals.

It’s obvious that Taylor is aware of Dusty as [her] music has appeared during the eras tour prior / during the countdown.

It’s no coincidence that Dusty Springfield just so happens to have come out as Bisexual and been known for that moment in her life.

It is odd to me that Taylor’s current artwork and album work STRONGLY resembles the color schemes and aesthetics of Dusty’s past work.

Moreover, in a strange crossover episode Taylor Jenkins Reid (Author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo) has mentioned the bisexual artist (Dusty Springfield) in her novel Daisy Jones and the Six.

It’s such a stretch but at the same time I swear to god she knows something we don’t and has stated that Evelyn Hugo could absolutely be Taylor Swift (as well as used Taylor’s lyrics as a muse for her writing.)

I honestly believe Taylor Swift has either read Taylor Jenkin Reids books OR directly inspired or co-written these stories (as TJR has an anonymous patron noted for Seven Husbands).

Idk…I don’t think any of these crossovers or similarities are just by chance. There’s plenty more visuals and information to support this fan theory but I don’t have time to pick through all of it.

I really believe that Taylor Swifts album 1989 (TV) is going to be her most freeing release yet, showing us her true colors regardless of solidified statements or coming out. The girlies who get it, get it, and the girlies that don’t, dont.
