THCa flower, the stakes are high and the chances are slim…
Dateline 1-3-24
It’s cold outside here in Middle Tennessee, so The Old Hemp Farmer is nursing a wonderful hot cup of organic Indonesian coffee and noshing some Costa Rican Cacao fortified with Tennessee homegrown Cannabis extract. Which is just one of the many Tennessee homegrown Recreational Cannabis edibles that’ll remain legal after July 1st of this year, which is a good thing because we will probably lose three different revenue streams - D8 Vape cartridges, THCa Pre-rolls and D8/D9 Tinctures unless…
So this morning’s blurb is about how possibly the high THCa Industry can be salvaged here in Tennessee. There are two scenarios that can possible save the Cannabis “cash cow” that is known as THCa. The first scenario that could save your THCa favorite product could start January 9th when the 2024 Tennessee legislative session commences. During this upcoming legislative session the House and Senate could simple rewrite HB0304 to state that all testing would be for Delta 9 THC only and this would apply to Cannabis grown by licensed Tennessee farmers. Lee Crabtree and I have been compliantly growing Cannabis in the state for going on eight years and presently we have to watch the majority of THCa flower being sold in Tennessee being Black Market grown other states. There is only one way to battle Black Market Cannabis and that is to have a Vertical (grown, processed, packaged and inspected in state) Cannabis program that provides relatively inexpensive high THCa flower that can be accessed easily. Which is an easily understood concept but I strongly doubt the Republican Super majority that control the Tennessee House and Senate are going to be comfortable with basically sensible Cannabis laws. So The Old Hemp Farmer doesn’t see HB0403 rewritten to save high THCa Flower because the majority of folks in the Tennessee Statehouse still harbor animosity against marijuana, which is basically what high THCa Flower actually is, so that ship probably won’t sail.
The other way that could possibly salvage the high THCa flower Industry in Tennessee is the ongoing campaign of petitioning the Tennessee Department of Agriculture with letters, phone calls and texts to amend the methodology (testing for Delta 9 THC from post decarboxylation to pre decarboxylation) of testing Cannabis products. (Doesn’t seem like much but the difference is everything to wholesalers and retailers.) With the Culmination of this “Save The THCA flower” campaign being hopefully a mass of Cannabis folks attending the town hall meeting where Public comment is scheduled for Feb. 6, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s Porter Building Atrium. So let us say a gang of folks actually do contact their legislators and the TDA to plead for high THCa flower and products, will this approach work? Maybe, maybe not. I’m not sure if people realize that the Tennessee Department of Agriculture was founded in 1854 and is the oldest state agency in Tennessee. This Cabinet-level agency is one of the largest and most firmly entrenched bureaucracies in Tennessee executive branch and supposedly only answers to the Governor. Which means the TDA can’t be voted out of office so they know their jobs are safe. Assured longevity has its rewards. Also know that the forthcoming lack of the public’s access to high THCa flower and the loss of revenue at Cannabis companies isn’t a crisis at the Tennessee Department of Agriculture. But be assured that the TDA will listen attentively but in the end these civil servants will do what they think is best for their agency and their pensions. Anyway as always, Hemp Dawgs and Hemp Puppies keep one eye on the weather and the other eye on the market.

Writing about Cannabis: “Just Can’t Quit Cannabis”
Dateline: 8-22-24
It’s easy to enjoy some Indonesian Organic Coffee and a couple squares of Tennessee homegrown Chocolate liberally laced with Tennessee homegrown Cannabis Extract on a beautiful Fall-like morning. Not to worry, the Summer conditions will return by the weekend to let us know we still have to live with the threat of oppressive heat for a few more weeks. The idea for today’s Cannabis stream of consciousness comes courtesy of several phone calls with some veteran Cannabis professionals this week. On some of the calls, The Old Hemp Farmer has known these Cannabis folks for a bunch of Sundays, so there was no pretensions of how they are “killing it”. Our Cannabis conversations got very real, very quickly. I hadn’t “chewed the fat” with some of these folks in several months, so it was great to catch up with them. One thing that these Cannabis business owners shared in common, was that all of them had at one time in the past, they made some very good money. Then things beyond their control started to manifest themselves, things like greatly increased competition, regulations and taxes and soon the margins got tighter and the cash flow started to wain. Yet these Cannabis professionals are still staying in the business because they actually like growing and making things from Cannabis, even though the excitement and revenue has ebbed, they love being around the plant. None of these Cannabis professionals are making any good money and some are barely able to stay in the Cannabis business, yet they persist. Trust me, yours truly can relate to staying in Cannabis for less money and three times more paperwork. Seriously, right now, if anything can stop you from getting into Cannabis, let it, because right now it’s not the time for romantics or dreamers, no, Cannabis is in a very harsh time with about 70% of Cannabis businesses losing money. Which means there are very smart Cannabis folks with great work ethic that are getting their asses kicked. Yet, they are hanging with Cannabis businesses they started, that’s got to be love.
The other conversations last week with other Cannabis professionals, were of another bent, these Cannabis professionals aren’t so much enthralled by growing or making things with the Cannabis plant as they are the hustle of putting a Cannabis deal together. I have watched over the years, Cannabis folks (that I’m quite fond of) string together enough eager people with just enough financial backing to start a Cannabis endeavor only to see the Cannabis enterprise fold or the business part doesn’t turn out the way they thought it would, so they move on to “greener” pastures. With these folks the passion is more for the excitement of the deal and not so much for the Cannabis plant itself. It’s like “Where’s Waldo”, where you get out your global map so you can follow these Cannabis professionals. In the past, it was from one “Rec” state to the next “Rec” state to legalize and now increasingly from country to country. In the first few years of International Cannabis hustling, the lure was to go some African or South American country where you could get cheap labor and do a deal with the local authorities, so you could export tonnes of Mid-grade (at best) Cannabis to Europe. Well it turned out, that the Europeans weren’t that much into lower grade Cannabis and it turned out that Europe was capable of growing great weed. As the whole Cannabis Colonial thing started to sour, countries in Europe started legalizing Cannabis and soon these same folks set sail for Europe. One has to have some admiration for these Cannabis “Travelers” because although some of these folks are straight hustlers, a lot of these people genuinely believe that the next Cannabis deal is going to be one they always dreamed about and this time it will work. So even though these folks don’t roll like we do at Tennessee homegrown, we do share something in common, seemingly, we just can’t quit Cannabis. Anyway as always, Hemp Dawgs and Hemp Puppies keep one eye on the weather and the other eye on the market.

Writing about Cannabis: Denial, Anger, Depression & Acceptance
Dateline: 7-24-24
The heat has broken here in Middle Tennessee and we finally have received a much needed rain. A tannish, brown color had started to creep into a lot of vegetation and crops were starting to show the signs of stress, so the precipitation was timely. This morning as is customary, Organic Coffee and Edibles with Tennessee homegrown extract are being consumed, while pursuing the masochistic endeavor that is writing about Cannabis. You see I’ve been compelled to grow, travel and write about Cannabis for about 40 years now. I’ve always written but nothing has been as interesting or compelling as the subject of Cannabis but that is starting to change. As Cannabis becomes more like any other business the more boring Cannabis becomes. Marketing, spread sheets and compliancy reports just aren’t that exciting. To make it more mind numbing, contemporary Cannabis seems to be stuck in a holding pattern of regulatory Hell, while waiting for the Feds and the states to get their act together. It’s hard to make any bold Cannabis decisions or head in new direction, when you don’t know the rules of the road. One thing I can assure you, is that the World of Cannabis was way more exciting (substitute illegal) and romantic, 40 years ago.
In the 1980’s, a few pivotal things occurred that shaped the face of contemporary Cannabis. The biggest sea change was transitioning from seeded Cannabis buds to Sinsemilla. In the 1960’s and into 1970’s, Commercial Marijuana was dominated by mass produced seeded Cannabis coming primarily from Mexico and to a lesser degree Jamaica on the East Coast. In the late 70’s another Cannabis player came on the scene and shook up everything, Columbia. The gold and red thumb sized buds from South America with names like Punta Roja, Limon Verde and Santa Marta Gold were more expensive but this buddage was several notches above Commercial Mexican, in both bouquet and strength. Which put pressure on the Cartels in Mexico and the Rastas in Jamaica to raise the quality of their Cannabis or lose their customers. Another thing Columbian Cannabis showed was that people were willing to pay more money for higher quality Cannabis. At the same time, the folks that were growing “Homegrown” started realizing that if you grew out those Commercial Mexican seeds and didn’t let those Females get fertilized, it was some of the finest Cannabis, they had ever seen and smoked. At first Sinsemilla (seedless) marijuana was only stash, buds that were shared only with friends and family. Gradually as more domestic Cannabis growers started culling Males a domestic market for Sinsemilla developed and soon people that were complaining about paying $35 dollars for an ounce of Santa Marta Gold were paying $150 an ounce for lime green buds that smelled fantastic and got you high, real high. The other thing that happened in Cannabis during the 1980’s was the introduction of Cannabis Indica. Suddenly because there was a market for domestic high quality Sinsemilla and increasing pressure from DEA Helicopters for the first time Commercial Cannabis started being grown inside under lights. Almost all Cannabis Sativa wants to grow to 9 foot tall or more and take 10 weeks or more to fully mature. So when Cannabis Indica arrived in North America, it was welcomed with open arms. Outdoor growers appreciated the fact that their Cannabis crops matured quicker, in late August or September while pure Cannabis Sativa females matured late October or early November. Less time in the field, the less time for the authorities and “Rippers” to find your Cannabis crop. The indoor growers immediately adopted Cannabis Indica because it was shorter and matured under “12 & 12” in 8 weeks instead 10 or 11 weeks like the pure Cannabis Sativa. Because of being more “user” friendly, everyone started crossing their Cannabis Sativa cultivars with any Cannabis Indica they could find. It was also during this period that high THC seed companies that were producing hybrid Cannabis cultivars started to emerge in the Netherlands and to a lesser degree in Canada. (That’s why in 2024, it is almost impossible to find a pure land race Cannabis Sativa or Indica.) The present day model of indoor Cannabis grows is almost entirely based on technology, methods and genetics that started in the 1980’s. Yes, the grow lights are more efficient and multi-spectrum and the watering and feeding of Cannabis plants are more nuanced but if a Cannabis grower from the late 1980’s, woke up in a grow room in 2024, they would immediately feel at home. Is The Old Hemp Farmer guilty of waxing nostalgic about the 1980’s being a very exciting time in Cannabis? Yes, that’s what writers do. Hopefully someone that is starting to write about Cannabis in 2024 will have something to romanticize about in forty years but I seriously doubt it. Anyway as always, Hemp Dawgs and Hemp Puppies keep one eye on the weather and the other eye on the market.

Tennessee's Hemp Derived Cannabinoid law gets bumped until October...
Dateline: 7-1-24
The deep heat here in Middle Tennessee continues to be quite fierce. So The Old Hemp Farmer is continuing to go with the Iced Indonesian coffee and frozen Costa Rican Cacao laced with Tennessee homegrown Cannabis extract which seems to take the edge off of the high temperatures. This morning, as we ease into the World of Cannabis, there are a couple things to pontificate on, first, we got our FBI reports (evidently Lee Crabtree and I aren’t criminals, which is nice to know) and so yours truly filled out our Tennessee Department of Agriculture Hemp license application and with a check sent out our application for yet another Hemp license. It’s hard to believe this Hemp license application is my 10th and Lee’s 9th. Speaking of which, this year’s Tennessee homegrown Cannabis crop is in the ground, with 95% of the work was done by the Cannabis Professional known as Lee Crabtree and he was generous enough to let The Old Hemp Farmer’s Wife to transplant as small group of Tennessee Volunteer aka Readyville God Bud that she can use for her topicals and a few batches of Hemp Pesto. TOHFW didn’t get to plant any Cannabis last year and she missed it, so did I. One of the reasons The Old Hemp Farmer got into Cannabis was to grow it. Reluctantly, I got bumped into marketing and sales, which was more important to Tennessee homegrown than yours truly working in the field. Also after 2021, quite frankly we no longer needed to grow hundreds and hundreds of pounds of high CBD Cannabis Flower. Ultimately though it doesn’t really matter much Cannabis we grow, we just love to grow the plant.
Which leaves me to the main topic at hand, today, July 1st 2024, was suppose to be when all aspects of Tennessee’s Hemp Derived Cannabinoid law - HB0403 were to be implemented and enforced. Well a funny thing happened, as the clock was starting to run out, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and Department of Revenue decided to push back implementation and enforcement to October 1, 2024. There weren’t any concrete reasons given for this delay but one can imagine. As The Old Hemp Farmer has said from the get-go that trying to ride herd on over 2,500 Cannabis businesses (half of which are off the TDA grid) in the state of Tennessee was going to be like pushing a boulder up the side of mountain. And finally when October 1st does arrive, how will enforcement proceed? When will the TDA start testing products and how long will it take? Will there be roving groups of agents from Tennessee Department of Agricultural Cannabis division that will “en masse” start raiding stores that sell Cannabis products? And once Cannabis the TDA folks do start checking out stores, how will that work? Will they simply take stock of inventory or will there be in store judgements on products and if deemed illegal will that warrant the TDA or TBI to execute an on the spot confiscation of a stores inventory? If so, what recourse will Cannabis business owners have to challenge any rulings? Realistically, if the testing lab at the TDA has to do literally hundreds and hundreds of tests, what will be the reliability of those tests? It would be brutal to find out that your Cannabis products were confiscated and destroyed because of a misplaced decimal point. Trust me, it happens, after 10 years of reading COAs, labs occasionally make mistakes. Meanwhile until October 1st, the Cannabis professionals in Tennessee are in a kind of limbo, not knowing what exactly is going on and wondering if the implementation of HB0403 will be pushed back again? Anyway as always, Hemp Dawgs and Hemp Puppies keep one eye on the weather and the other eye on the market.
