I think they write him so stupid because they hate on his character and wrote him more poorly then deserved, when alot of the (admittedly) valid hated actions he does, isn't solely done by John Dory, all of branches brothers are guilty of not actually coming back to check in on him/staying in contact, and all of them (minus Floyd, who was Actively Dying) when met with branch again, treated him like the young toddler they left behind. And all of them (minusFloyd, because again, Actively Dying), where planning on going back to their normal lives with no contact with eachother. All of them planned that, which upset branch to the point of storming out, it wasn't just john.

And everyone forgets to take into account how parentified young John dory was/is. Because JD is the oldest taking care of a bunch of siblings younger then him, with help from their grandma, not they're parents. Branch doesn't mention anything abought is parents, because all he knows/knew where his older brothers.
