this is going to be a very long-winded ask but I've been questioning something for a long amount of time:

i had my voice drop significantly around the time most guys in school did too, around 12-14. i found old recordings of me talking and singing and its a completely different voice, more high pitched. as far as i can remember, i didnt have clitomegaly but it was larger and genuienly like a small penis. i also had a lot of body hair but no facial hair afaik, and super oily skin and acne that wasnt caused by what i ate . i had super heavy painful periods though that sometimes left me unable to function at all and brought me into the ER once and got me declared anemic, just to elaborate on how bad it was.

i spoke in past tense because i'm transitioning and have been getting testosterone every 3 months for 2 years now. i did notice i responded really fast to the first dose already, i almost immediately grew facial hair before my second dose and had my voice drop even more, outside of the usual clinical curve of change. while i know it depends on the person, it was very fast. i also cant shake that it might be PCOS since i wouldnt know if there is a spectrum to hyperandrogenism that would leave you still having heavy periods while also experiencing those changes. i haven't had my period ever since starting testosterone so i wouldnt know what would still be visible down there if i'd have a gynecologist take a look at it.

i know youre not a professional, but do you know off the top if there are any intersex conditions that.. well.. would describe what i could probably look into that couldve been there already pre-transition or at least could list off some intersex conditions that dont involve having internal testes or "hidden male sex characteristics" since i have had ultrasounds in my lower abdominal area a few times and i wouldve probably been told about it.

Thank you so much for sending this in. First off, I completely understand your struggle with questioning being intersex after starting testosterone. I didn't start to question my past experiences with my sex and sex characteristics until after I had started testosterone. This made figuring out if I was intersex even more difficult. Especially because, even if I was intersex, my outward intersex symptoms became "normal" for any FTM/trans+ person on testosterone.

What you describes already sounds like hyperandrogenism. Hyperandrogenism is, in and of itself, an inherently intersex experience. You do not need a specific diagnosis that has hyperandrogenism as a "symptom" nor do you need to have diagnosed hyperandrogenism in order to say you have it. Even if you are now on testosterone HRT, which makes hyperandrogenism seem more typical/"normal" for your body, that doesn't negate that it would be something your body still inherently has.

Also, I'm unsure if you mean, "I'm getting my testosterone prescription filled up every three months and am taking it for a different period of time" or, "I'm taking an injection or other form of testosterone every three months, and only every three months". If it's the latter/the second one, it very very much only further makes it seem as if you have hyperandrogenism or a variation in how your body processes testosterone. Your responses on testosterone are not typical for perisex individuals. Also, if you are on it that often because of a doctor recommendation and not a personal choice, that makes hyperandrogenism and even stronger likelihood because T is often taken less often or in lower doses for those who have hyperandrogenism but are trans+.

Also, I would like to say, it isn't entirely uncommon for intersex people who have something like internal testes to just...not be told about it. Even if the doctor(s) know. This is something often kept hidden from intersex people and many doctors will proceed to "treat" the patient (almost always unnecessarily) for their internal testes without explaining why they are doing that. I'm not saying that this is your experience, and many doctors would tell a patient, but it's important to just keep in mind that, unfortunately, doctors can suck.

Moving on from what you've described that seem like strong signs of hyperandrogenism, the fact that your genitalia are at all ambiguous also means that the intersex label is open for you to use. No one needs a specific diagnosis or anything like that to be welcome to use the label. The clitoris and penis are often more similar than people think. One way to imagine it is that the clitoris and penis are on a sliding scale, like in a character creation model, where you maybe slide the hair from long to short, or the body type from smaller to larger. The clitoris often does look much more like a penis when clitoromegaly is present. Having an ambiguous erectile structure is inherently intersex. Your genitalia might not be able to be classified as a clitoris or a penis, or you might not be comfortable as classifying it as exclusively either of those, or either of those at all. Having ambiguous genitalia is also a sign of hyperandrogenism in general, and/or it can be something that someone is just born into. In some cases for people, their clitoromegaly isn't developed until they grow older and their hyperandrogenism becomes present, as hyperandrogenism can be very late in presentation.

If you want specific diagnosed things that might be what you have, the most likely candidates to me are PCOS, like you said, or NCAH. However, it's important to note that bodies are medically messy. They can't always easily fall into categories. Despite the "C" standing for cystic in PCOS, people can have PCOS without cysts. You could have something like NCAH and endometriosis. Or you could have no specifically diagnosed intersex variation, but also experience certain things that cause painful periods. The most likely causes for your period pains are probably PCOS or endometriosis. Dysmenorrhea is also just a general term for abnormally or life-impacting painful periods.

Also, it's common for hyperandrogenism to stop or lessen periods. Same with testosterone HRT. But neither of those inherently stop them from happening. Some people on testosterone HRT can be on it for years at a high dose and still get periods.

So, basically, it sounds definite to me that you have hyperandrogenism and clitormegaly/ambiguous genitalia. You also have had abnormal/painful experiences with your periods, which is often comorbid with intersex variations.

You can definitely be intersex without any "hidden" things inside your body. You can also be intersex without a specific diagnosis. You know your body best, and in a case like yours, it is up to your self-determination if you label as or consider yourself intersex. You have a place in this community and in this experience no matter what. I wish you love on your intersex journey 💛💜💛!

i'm almost done with this fucking bullshit and i am in a really ould mood and usu they make it a bit better but imo it's kind of....annoying i guess balancing all these story elements and introducin gother couples (even in the periphery) since the story in itself can't focus. i feel like all in all the time spent with these two is a lot more limited and we get the feel for the rship because of their chemistry as actors, irl chemistry as friends and colleagues, and hopefully being happy and working on a good set. so it isn't the strength of the writing or production.

for some reason they get like less dynamic ways of being together which i think is part of their charm, they do things their own way, but the writers really should have substantiated this more. it's really just the way everyone in the show has managed to deliver these AWFUL story lines and production decisions (like seriously who the fuck was on costume? lighting?)

like maybe hot take but all the moments that are cringe and insane in the show are not pleasant, per se, because they aren't thought out clearly. so they're not a joy to watch in the normal sense but the actors are good enough to pull it off. i didn't cringe at the talks they had because it felt like actors like acting these lines out instead of us being embarrassed for it and you CAN TELL theyre embarrassed.

this is a huge kudos to the casting director and the actors and whatever crew that actually did a good job. i don't particularly like watching bo xiang and his grandfather husband not because of the content but because i feel like, to me, they're so awkward even though they have chemistry. i don't have that issue with xing si and his rapist brother boyfriend because watching them is actually really pleasant, it's intimate. this isn't to do with the story though because when it hits you how devoid this other person is and how stupid the situation is it changes (for me, for me, for me, this is all my opinion think whateverrrr u want im not telling u 2 ok!)

so truly kudos to this cast. idk if i'm misremembering here but imo the most cast appropriate series in this was crossing the line and close to you. one is a decent atmosphere and execution (yes even with that brother story line, notice the major key differences though because that's a sincere false equivalence. they try to execute power imbalances soooo badly and then fail every time but here's one meant to shock too and it was just likelmao ok girl?)

it may not make sense to say either in a writing way or for the character to do it but i believe that whoever the characters these people are supposed to be especially those super not well written on the page still get that message aacross (yong jie's actor is a good ex. not sure if i should ccongratulate him for having the worst job on earth and the worst character and his character is flat but. ostensibly they should let their actions speak for themselevs but what they do is they back themselves into a ccorner with unsuretyabout their characters or a dilemma that pops up they just want to excuse it. well guess hwat u couldnt do enough legwork. but to some extent the disposable side couple works here on a um "our eyes see them and get it" way

* Possibly he got the name Ted from people calling him The Eternal Darkness? Like "oh gosh no that doesnt sound very friendly" *rebrands self*

* also im not sure if i should leave his husband as lee or maybe leonard or leopold? Can lee be short for leonard?

* I'm thinking Ted looks like a short round cuddly man with long curly hair and a beaming smile that just sometimes looks slightly too wide and fangy. He's like the most unimposing huggable dude in the world and probably wears cute lil polkadot bowties or something, and he just also happens to be an otherworldly doom monster. I'm thinking Lee is also a huggable dude but more built like a rugby player instead of all soft angles. And probably has short hair with a stylish salt and pepper look, starting to go grey but looking fabulous while he does it. Ted thinks he looks super handsome when he wears his reading glasses.

* Ted doesnt realise he isnt human, its partly because incarnating as a mortal means he doesnt have enough brain space for his full millenia of memories and partly because he feels self concious and wishes he could become a real human. Like..he had to discard some memories but it was his depression that caused "memory of not being human" to be one of the memories he picked. Lee figured it out pretty quickly though because Ted isnt exactly great at his human impression, alas! But he's trying to just support his husband towards remembering naturally, cos he can see the situation is traumatic for him and doesnt want to cause a panic attack by telling him all at once. Just tries to let Ted know that he loves him very deeply and like.. "I dont just love your face, i love YOU". And help support him to show more of himself in situations where his anxiety gets in the way, like more normal human situations to lead up to maybe the whole inhuman situation. I'll help you feel okay with wearing a swimsuit at the beach -> i'll help you feel okay with manifesting as a mind bending sentient black hole with a thousand eyes. Its tricky tho because Lee also feels anxious wearing a swimsuit in public! I'm gonna throw a little bit of personal relateableness in here and say he has the problem of bad acne and peeling skin on his upper back and shoulders cos thats a thing that runs in my family and im very self concious about it yeah. But these two depressed dudes can help fight the depression together!!

* Ted's hobbies include learning to bake and also collecting model trains. It might be because he subconciously remembers drifting outside this dimension and looking in on the tiny humans but being too shy to talk to them? So he likes little tiny decorative things! And its so fun putting them together with his husband~! Lee is very supportive of Ted's hobbies and tries to help out with any heavy lifting cos he's not too good at the fiddly bits. He did a bunch of diy to renovate their old garage into a nice craft studio for Ted's miniatures! (They dont need a car anymore when Ted can just teleport) Ted actually isnt super good at cooking yet but he's excited to learn. He wanted to be able to bake Lee cakes cos Lee has a big sweet tooth and it felt more romantic to try and make his own stuff someday instead of jusy buying it. I got into thinspo type shit when I was about 14, about the same time I read wintergirls by laurie halse anderson. (dont read that book, btw.) I was the skinniest I've ever been, largely bc that was also before the doctors were able to nail down a diagnosis for my ulcerative colitis, let alone treatment. I counted calories, I wrote down everything I ate, the whole thing. and then I got my diagnosis and had the realization that with the colitis, I could actually die of malnutrition if I didnt eat. so I did what I do best and forced it all to the back of my mind. I threw away my calorie journal and stopped looking at thinspo and pushed any thoughts of the yellow bubbles of fat under my skin (thanks ms anderson) as far to the back of my mind as I could and tried to eat like a real person again.

and it mostly worked, even though I was still insecure about my body. I didnt think about the phrase "emptystrong" (thanks ms anderson) for ages. I gained weight, broke 100lbs again and filled out some. started actually growing breasts and hips, as one does during puberty.

then I went on prednisone. then I stayed on prednisone for about 5 continuous months. at one point I was taking 60mg a day. if you're not familiar with prednisone, it's a corticosteroid that people arent generally prescribed for longer than 2 weeks because the side effects (weight gain, fat collecting in odd places, depression, increased appetite, acne, etc) are so numerous and problematic. it wouldn't've happened if we hadn't been in the process of switching insurance and therefore switching doctors, but it did. to be honest I could sue, if we could afford to do that kind of thing.

I was probably around 120 when i started on the prednisone. by the time I got off it, I was probably about 180, and I didnt stop slowly gaining weight until just recently, 4 whole years later. not to mention that I was always hungry, no matter how much I ate. my face blew up like a balloon - prednisone moon face is why I look the way I do - and I got horrible, horrible acne. and, of course, it really fucked with my preexisting depression, not to mention the stress of being a 15 year old girl and having your whole entire appearance ruined.

I never quite got back into thinspo proper, but I didnt need to when now almost any model or actress was sure to be so much skinnier than me that it had the same effect. I wasnt the only fat person in my friend group, nor was I the biggest or heaviest, but i felt like the ugliest and I probably was. i felt 100% unlovable, like anything else about me was overshadowed by how horrible I looked. any self-esteem I'd previously had was just gone. I got into some pretty harmful depressive habits.

the first time I opened up about the prednisone to someone who both hadn't been there while it was happening and who had been on prednisone themself was when I was 16. I was in Scotland, I was flirting with the idea of being nonbinary, and I was with an all-girls choir. but they were all kind to me, and friendly enough to even consider some of them friends. a couple of us were chronically ill, so I talked about my colitis and the prednisone. one of the girls had been on it before and she was shocked to hear that I'd been on it so long. she didnt say it, but I bet she was thinking something along the lines of "no wonder you look like that."

(I actually came out as nonbinary for the first time on that trip. I skyped my girlfriend at the time and told her, and the next day I told the entire choir, all at once.)

any self esteem I have now, any positive thing i think about my body or my face, i had to build from the ground up. i have fought tooth and nail against my depression and my anxiety and everything else going on in my brain to get to where I am today wrt positivity. sometimes it still feels like fighting to feel good about myself. sometimes I lose and just feel like shit all day.

it helps to actually look around at the real people you know. your mom, your grandma, your teachers, your friends - maybe one or two of them looks like a thinspo model but the rest of them look much more... normal. because it is normal to carry fat on your body - you are not grotesque, you are not a whale of a person, you are not beyond saving or loving.

another thing that's been helping has been working on my relationship to food. I still struggle with what feels like the basics - just eating enough. often, between my various mental problems and my physical health, I don't have the spoons to make healthy food, and money is also an issue with that type of thing. I would just... not eat, because I couldn't make anything and I couldn't afford anything healthy. but the thing is that the rules are different when you still struggle to make 3 meals a day happen. getting any food into your body, no matter what it is, is a LOT better than not having any food in your body. I couldn't afford healthy premade food, but I could afford shitty food. it was hot, and it was filling, and it was better than an empty stomach and I'll never regret eating mcdonalds when I couldn't cook for myself.

it is not easy. I still dont have a properly healthy relationship with food, or with my body image. I feel like shit a lot of the time, and I slip up and miss meals often. but I am doing better, and that is all I can ask for.

So, on occasion I randomly hop on here to vent about my personal life, reaaaaaally just because it's therapeutic, so here we go...

I have struggled with my weight all my life. I have always been "thic" so to speak, but i've also had my outright heavy moments. I've also had an eating disorder. I used to joke that if I looked at a cookie wrong I would gain weight, but to a degree, it's the truth. While all three of my sisters had naturally fast metabolisms and gorgeous bodies, I have seriously always been on a diet. If I didn't eat exactly right and stay in sports I would gain 25lbs in a month (not exagerating). I have never been smaller than a size 12 (US) Jean, that's with a strict diet, running and dancing 5x a week (I am NOT saying that size 12 is huge, or bad or anything like that. In my specific case I was leading an extremely active life style and though 12 was my smallest, I was still "soft" or for want of a better term, jiggly).

On top of that, I had bad skin. REALLY bad, I was on acne medications from the time I was 13 until I turned 19 and they finally let me go on accutane (if you dont know what that is, google it. Nasty, brutal stuff) but that's what it took to finally clear it up. I didn't get my first period until I was 14, and I didn't develop breasts until I was 17 (this was a big thing for me, because all of my sisters were natural DDs by freshman year).

I have had a really long, hard journey to self love, and sometimes I still cant stand what I see in the mirror. Even when I was anorexic, I was still the "fat sister" and it has taken me a long time to come to grips with who I am and what I look like. I met an amazing man who loves every pound, who has also supported me on every diet, exercise regime, and eating disorder relapse. My family has been very supportive as well. They never treated me like the fat sister, even when everyone else did.

Here's the thing though, I'm growing a moustache!! That's where I draw the line, a 23 year old woman should not be growing facial hair, this cannot be normal! So I went to the doctor yesterday and told her everything that was going on, starting with the facial hair, the inability to lose weight, how easily I gain it, and my skin issues that were in my chart. Its important to note that this doctor is new; I had had the same doctor since I was like 5, but they recently retired. I had brought these issues up in the past and was basically blown off. This doctor took me seriously, and I think after all these years I might finally have an answer:

PCOS or Polycystic ovary syndrome.

I have been doing some reading and litterally explains everything! ALL of my symptoms line up. My weight, my skin, my facial hair and YES even the mental health issues that coincided with my eating disorder. AND IT CAN BE TREATED. They took my blood to do some testing (for pcos, diabetes, high cholesterol and high testosterone levels, which could also be causes in their own right) and I should hear back tomorrow.

The thing is... I am honestly not sure how I feel. I know it sounds stupid and probably whiny to complain about all of this stuff and then hesitate to fix it, but honestly, I'm not sure if I know who I am outside of those things. I have had to work so hard for years just to like myself, not even love myself, just like; it feels almost surreal to learn that everything about me that people said "made me ME" or "that's just the way god made you" have actually been symptoms of a treatable condition this whole time. That it wasn't in my head. I wasn't just insecure, that there actually was something wrong with me that everyone just ignored. Somehow, it actually hurts my feelings. Too, I now have to face a very scary reality if this diagnosis comes back positive... the major effect of PCOS is female infertility. My fiancee and I have always wanted children, we were actually going to start our family next year. We knew that we may struggle because he is a cancer survivor (leukemia when he was 12, too young to freeze sperm) we already know that his reproductive system is damaged and he has a 15% chance of virility.

I feel like I am trapped between two selfish fears:

1) That I have PCOS and I'll finally be beautiful, but I may never have a baby

Or 2) That my body is perfectly fine, and I was just meant to be an overweight woman with a moustache.

I honestly don't know what I'm hoping for. If there's something wrong with me, I'll know, and maybe be able to treat it and yet, I'll also know that I am a broken machine. On the flip side, if there's nothing wrong with me... then why am i like this? I guess I'll find out tomorrow...

I work 2 part time jobs and neither offer health insurance, so in 2014 I will have to buy some. One comparable to the one I had when I worked a full time job would cost $600 a month but would cover prescriptions with a $20 copay for generics with a $1500 deductible and a $4500 out of pocket maximum. So how do you know if you’re running on autopilot and are disconnected from what your body needs to function and look its best? Read these signs and take note if they sound familiar.

Sign #1: You don’t know if you have any food allergies or sensitivities.

Do you ever wonder if you’re one of the millions of people with a gluten sensitivity or a dairy intolerance? If it turns out that you are, your body has tried to tell you multiple times.

Common symptoms of gluten sensitivities are bloating, frequent headaches, constipation, diarrhea, skin issues, sluggishness, and so much more. Common symptoms of lactose intolerance are congestion, bloating, abdominal pain, acne, and migraines. If you’ve ever experienced any of these, your body is trying to tell you something.

I started birth control as a teenager, since it was the only thing I knew that actually worked to keep my acne under control. At times it was so bad, my mom let me skip school to avoid embarrassment.

When I became an adult, I tried many times to get off of it but each time I did, my skin broke out again. Adult acne felt even worse. It wasn’t until I limited wheat and dairy that I was able to get off birth control and my skin finally cleared up for good.

Contrary to what we tend to believe, symptoms like these aren’t normal! It’s your body’s way of telling you a serious change is needed. Seriously.

Sign #2: You frequently aren’t sure if you’re actually hungry or not.

How often do you find yourself staring blankly into your pantry wondering if you’re truly hungry or if you’re just bored?

In the past, I’d go to my fridge, open it up and give it a good hard stare, close it, and then walk away—only to find myself doing it again minutes later. Was I hungry? Was I craving something? I had no clue if my own body was hungry or not! I felt so frustrated and annoyed with myself for doing this time and time again.

It sounds counterintuitive, but many of us don’t have an appetite the majority of the day simply because we just don’t eat enough food. Our body ends up holding onto every morsel we feed it for dear life.

It’s a genuine a survival instinct. If your body doesn’t know if it’s going to get enough at its next meal, it sends mixed signals. But when your body is getting enough nutrients, you won’t have to question whether you’re hungry or not.

Sign #3: You swear to have zero willpower when it comes to processed food.

Does it seem like no matter how hard to try to eat healthy, you always end up choosing the food you know you’ll regret?

Whenever I’d go through one of my clean eating phases, I’d inevitably be the girl hiding in the corner stuffing her face with the muffin she never liked to begin with. I’d be so angry with myself for not having more self-control and then feel so ashamed. I’d repeat silently to myself over and over, “What’s wrong with you? Why do you keep doing this?”

A lack of willpower is our body’s way of telling you it needs specific nutrients (hello chocolate! magnesium needed), nostalgia (let’s recreate an old memory), or even yearnings (how alive will I feel if I eat this).

If you pay attention to what your body is feeling physically during these moments, you may notice your throat constricting or heaviness in your belly. I argue that there’s no such thing as willpower. Your body needs something and it’s not necessarily food related.

Sign #4: You have no idea why you’re so tired and craving junk food every afternoon like clockwork.

Do you feel sluggish at 2:00 to 3:00 pm on a daily basis? And then find yourself reaching for the first extra sweet or salty thing you can get your hands on?

When my afternoon slump came, all I knew is that I was so dang tired… and craving carbs and sugar like a fiend! Enter vending machine with salty chips and sweet candy bars to the rescue. I’d feel so lethargic and just awful. This vicious cycle had me exhausted and ultimately is what made realize I had to do something. I had to make a change.

Your body’s ravenous afternoon cravings are a message. They’re screaming at you, “I need nutrients! I need fuel!” Chances are, you haven’t fed it what it needs throughout the day and your body’s only way to get through to you is to intensify your cravings.

Sign #5: You feel extreme emotions without rhyme or reason.

Do you ever have days where you feel like you want to scream or cry for absolutely no reason at all?

Formerly, I sometimes experienced this during a TV show or movie. The characters would say or do something that wasn’t particularly scary or exciting, but it triggered something and I felt an urge to start bawling. It was really unnerving to realize I could cry my heart out for no apparent reason at all.

Our nature is to take the easy route—to push any heightened emotions aside and go on with our day. (We always have so much to do, right?!) But emotions need to be felt. Otherwise, they can manifest by coming out at unexpected moments or even physically in our bodies i.e. hair loss, skin rashes, weight gain/loss, etc.

Your body is a magical and wise teacher. Every ache, pain, symptom, and craving is a gift in its own way.

Think of how many chronic illnesses that are diet related. Here are some to name a few: diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dental health, osteoporosis, asthma … The negative symptoms you’re experiencing today are your body’s way of doing what it can to help you prevent a disease from manifesting in your body tomorrow.

My mom found out she has breast cancer a couple years ago. Since then, she’s completely transformed her diet and lifestyle, and from what we can tell, the cancer has regressed.

She’s always struggled with extreme allergies and health issues. I can’t help but wonder, what if she had listened to her body and made these changes before the cancer progressed? How much less scared and stressed would our family be? (Now she’s feeling better than she did before her diagnosis!)

I'm not suggesting that anyone who has cancer is to blame for their diagnosis, or that dietary and lifestyle changes alone will cure it, but simply that our diet affects our health in more ways than we know.

I learned through her story and now I’m doing the best I can to take note of every little ache, pain, flush, color, craving, and emotion of my body… before I end up with the kind of life-changing hardship that’s far more than just gaining a few pounds or adult acne.

If your body is experiencing a persisting symptom, it’s telling you something. Listen.

If you’re feeling an extreme emotion, your body has something it needs to feel. Let it.

If any of these signs resonate with you, try this: Put one hand on your belly, the other on your heart and say this aloud, “Dear body, I’m sorry for not listening and not making you the priority. I really do want the best for you. I love you. I’m listening.”

Slow down and be mindful of the signs your body is sending. And instead of adding more things to your to-do list, you’ll gradually feel more confident about what your body needs to move naturally in a positive, healthier direction.

I originally had State Farm and was paying $232 for a Hyndai Tiburon, had a traffic accident for, Improper Lane Change, the other person did not file a claim, had to spend $500 to get my car fixed and $89 on municipal court fees. Aim a 23 year old male & this is my first ticket for speeding technically (I got a ticket 6 years ago for speeding but it was dismissed in court). Gavin’s got guts and guts is enough.

Peeps we love SEO so much why not start with some eh? Above in this Senior portrait is Gavin. His portrait was takin by Studio ES in Sanford North Carolina.

Building on high school senior pictures philosophy (sneaky devil) of Alex and listening to your client. I would like to talk about Gavins shoot and the importance of the photographer interview. I mean more than just a phone call, it starts there but you as the photog are tasked with finding what it is your client wants. So after the first phone interview you have to get into their space, nothing will tell you more about a person than the area they call home.

The very thing that I look for or well I should say listen for during my interview is a change in my clients demeanor. This is the signal that your on to something. When I met with Gavin after our phone interview he was slightly on board for getting the photos done but thought that it would be like most senior photos, brick walls and leaning on things. I told Gavin that I want to make images that mean something to him. So our discussion followed the standard flow of getting to know someone, like speed dating. Whats your favorite: music, sport, movies, food ect and so fourth. When we hit movies Gavin perked right up and from there we took the conversation in all directions. Here is where I learned that this young man is very into mid classic horror. Generally stuff from the late 70′s thru the 90′s and some modern stuff too, a big buff of it in fact. All the details about horror movies were hit and all this came from a list of very basic questions asked and being open to when your client tells you they like something. Be perceptive folks, I cant stress it enough, and really treat each client like you advertise, unique.

So many words, you know what this blog needs? that’s right a little SEO magic.

This guy, Gavin had his Senior pictures done with a photographer at Studio ES who, fortunately for you serves the Sanford North Carolina area.

I would like to start with Gavins white background work. Once Gav and I knew what it is he wanted as a client that theme will guide the entire shoot. In screen writing its called the thru line or central concept, I’ll spare you the long winded explanation but the thru line is the master of all your creative decisions. All props, lighting and emotions must serve the thru line, get one and follow it your pictures will work together and be better.

Gavin and I made the white background set-up so that he can have something that is family and school friendly. He can take em to the yearbook, though I think they are too big, other family members can share and enjoy them as well. Even these frames where we keep it friendly still are guided by the thru line, incorporating who he is and what he wants in a shoot, a movie buff.

SEO is like the potatoes to your meat. People complain about the carbs but you gotta have it.

One day Gavin, the handsome guy above was walking around Sanford North Carolina when he stopped in Studio ES to get his Senior photos done by a photographer.

I love the fact that you can say anything you want for SEO its just about the key words. It’s going to be a fun ride.

Lets drop right into the horror and the core that is Gavin. He has props baby! His room is not only a trove of films, but the icons of those films are also there in plastic, steel or some form of material. I wanted to shoot the bedroom but there is only so much a guy can do in one day. 

So you should largely be able to tell that the shadow is a spider or at least an ant. We will talk in a little bit about photog failures, but that is actually the spider gremlin from Gremlins 2, and there is homage in this frame, in the movie the way the spider gremlin is introduced to the audience is through its shadow on a wall. When spending time with Gav in his room we discussed that scene and we drew up this frame in honor of the movie and his affection for it.

I told Gavin lets go for it I can make that happen like in the movie. Which in a larger look we accomplished our idea. I failed in the ultra sharp clarity of the shoot because I used a grid, a black grid instead of a snoot. I know that raw light from a small single source will give you crisp shadows, folks I did not have a snoot, or cinefoil, paper, cardboard or a cereal box but I am sure that Jessica had some, Jess was great, I failed twice dang. However client and I are both happy with the frame so that is most important.

Gavin was exceptionally pleased with this Senior portrait by Studio ES but the portrait photographer was upset due to a re-compress to meet tumblrs size requirement. We are in Sanford North Carolina and its 2017, size limits, sheesh.

Gavin loves scream. So We took that old monster trying to get in the house idea to make this frame. This was one epic shoot, as of this juncture I am still very reliant on hot lights, and hot lights need what? That’s right, electricity, luckily when I roll on set of a film that is my job and I have the knowledge to make my cable runs safely and with as little line loss as possible. Working with hot lights is a challenge because the exposure is governed by the shutter speed and the arpeture. Since I neither have a spare 12 grand in cash laying around to buy a 6k hmi with ballast nor the power to power it, we used 1k pars baby! You know them as the rock and roll lights, for a tungsten they are very efficient they throw 2k worth of light for a thousand watts of power. Did I loose ya? its the same concept as led lighting, more light output for less wattage used.

Now folks I wanted to fill my frame with the environment to tell the story and since hot lights are ruled by shutter and aperture that means an incredibly slow shutter speed and Gavin had to hold as still as possible, which considering we hit focus he did well. We shot with a 1\4 of a second shutter on a tripod with a sandbag on the head of pod with the camera, basically every thing I could do to make the camera still and have the frame in decent focus. Just a nod to those of you who dont know shutter speed and are like 1/4sec is fast, trust me it is ridiculously slow.

Gav and I talked color in this senior photo (you little devil) there are three color balances going on here to help sell the story, Gavin is neutral, he is white balance, the house we splashed with 1/4 ctb to cool it off a bit for the moon light and inside the house is warm with a tungsten hot light plus 1/2 cto to warm it up a bit. The play on color has all the representations needed for the story, cold and scary on the outside and warm and safe on the inside.

I love to dabble in shadows, I felt the play of chiaroscuro was what would make or break this frame. The frame just wouldn’t work if every detail was lit. I cast the shadow between Gavin and the house both in a creative decision and a technical sneaky decision as well. Creatively I gain some separation from Gavin and the house plus the black fades into the distance like many horror films you can only see so far into the trees. On a sneaky technical note I am hiding two things from you. First the fact that there is a slide attached to the little house. Also I am attempting to soften the fact that it is a play house as well. The slide is hidden and with out me saying anything you probably wouldn't have thought too much about the house. I was mildly successful, next time keep mouth shut.

Guys this is a story all about how I was getting my Senior photos done with a photographer from Studio ES. I picked up a knife made a scary face and my mom got scared, she said your going to Sanford North Carolina. Do do do dooo.

Can we give it up selective lighting? yeah or sometimes known as lighting. The power of lighting is this, hey you, look here. That is your goal for every frame you ever create. With Gavin we wanted that horror story feel. Grids to the rescue, grids are great as they control the light and allow for an easy fall off unlike a snoot which has a very defined edge. I hit Gav’s face with a 25° grid right out of frame giving it that selective pop. I also used a 25° grid but a touch further back to hit the mask as well. That provided the mask with the crucial lift in exposure in order to help it stand out with all the affinity of tones in the frame.

As I start to wrap this post up I want to end on Gavin’s editing and to enforce the law I mentioned in Alex, about adapting your style to serve the client and not making the client serve your style. As you can see in Gavin’s senior pictures (every time I sneak in a SEO, I can hear Doc Brown say “Einstein you little devil,” in my head.) we transitioned from light to dark both in lighting and editing. In fact by the last frames I showed you I developed a look for those frames where we go the opposite of what phlearn.com tells you, against the standard cleaning up of skin and photos.

To get Gavin’s photos crunchy like this, first, I rode the line of upper limits of exposure when I fired the shutter, the fill umbrella was set at one stop below grey and the grid on Gav’s face was 2 2/3 stop up from grey. This ratio allowed me to stretch it a little bit in post to add a little more crunch to the lighting. 

I zapped a few acne that cluttered up his face. Then for the reds that we normally make disappear I enhanced them with the clarity slider, a little vibrant boost then sucked the saturation out of the frame. Now during pre-production Gavin and I decided on a really horror show palate of desaturated colors to the point of looking ill. We got it.

No SEO this time folks, nope not gonna talk about senior photos, photographers, or Studio ES. I’m done.

A real photog would never make their client look bad, and I didn't, Gavin and I created our shoot together, like I said and will say till I am sick of it, listen to your client, serve their needs, create a thru line and let that thru line guide every decision you make. In the words of Shia LeBeouf, do it.

A big thanks from the bottom of my heart to Gavin and the Parris family, our shoot spanned the day into late night. I was with the family so long that they have ceased to be clients but very warm friends that I will happily have over for food, kiddo and doggo fun. Miss Drama Queen.

Do you like to dramatize things and always exaggerate the problem that is just actually ordinary happen in life? If your answer yes then you can almost certainly be detected as a miss drama queen.You may confused about this post. Some people that close to me call me miss drama queen. They say it’s  because I worry too much with negative thinking. Just like what happened yesterday, I dont know if this thing is a big deal or not. Because normal people will think its like nothing to be argued actually. But because I am a “miss drama queen” I don’t react like normal people.

My future husband asks me to do a treatment that make my cheeks thinner (my cheeks look so chubby that is what he always say). This one always his concern. Then my evil side said, “so He can not accept you whatever you are. Are you sure He is the one who you looking for?”

Alright! Let me explain what is exactly just happened !

First, As I have mentioned above. That my chubby cheeks is the thing that his concerns. He wants my cheeks to be thinner. He told me He want to look at me more beautiful during the wedding day. At that time I said, “is that really much important?” He said, “yes why not? I am capable and have money to do so. All you have to say is “Yes”. Then, I agree with his request that I find strange.  It is look like He does not accept me for what I look? I think this thought is still normal is not it? not excessive. But some people close to me say why should you worry. You should be glad though. It means He cares with you.

Second, Last week we agreed to go to one of the beauty clinics to do a treatment that can make my chubby cheeks to be V-shape. Before that I phoned, they say this treatment can only be done with a face that is not problematic (I mean free of acne and not too much sensitive in other word normal skin) and coincidently my face is showing some acne. somehow ? Maybe stress? Stress with job problems, and certainly stress before the wedding. This is natural is not it? But we still went to the clinic on Monday. Upon our arrival there we were immediately greeted by customer service. She said if my face is not worth doing that treatment. The first thing we should to do is get rid of my acne. And She said I need 3 times treatment and the price is too expensive. Then my future husband surprised because He thinks nothing wrong with my face. It’s just a little acne. Why should we pay too much? and 3 times treatment does too much. Then the customer service said, no we have package price. You should pay 3 times treatment for acne treatment. Then my boyfriend said again, why? could you look her face. nothing wrong! then the cutomer service a little bit yelled at us. and saying “Alright, if you both of you want to still to do this treatment its up to you, but you should sign an agreement letter if anything happens both of you will not sue us”.Then my boyfriend a little bit afraid and finally he said we will heal my acne elsewhere because in my opinion my girl does not need that acne treatment. Later,  we will come back. Then we left the place. In the car, He looks disappointed and can not understand why the healing of acne as small as it can be that expensive. He laughed. He finally asked, “what the hell do you have acne so? You stress why? Because of me? yes?”. I replied, “no. Because of work problems”. “Yes but you can tell me”, he said. “I'm okay”, I answered slowly.

Third, On our way to home, no matter what demons possessed him. He looks very annoyed because today's treatment fails. His face looked moody and unenthusiastic. Then he said one thing that might make me severely disappointed. He said first when we had not started this relationship, he did not fall in love directly to me. It's 10:45pm, He must go home because it's late, tomorrow we have to work as well. He came home with a gloomy face. I also entered the room with a sad and disappointed face. This is noticed by my mama. then I tell her about the problem. I LOVE HIM! :/ :( I just need to calm the heck down, not react too much.

There is a promo at the beauty clinic where she works. She sent me the promo through what’s app. Wow, God is great. He always knows my need. Unexpectedly the dermatologist came, and brought the good news. And the fact that my face worth to do the treatment. He also gave some suggestions for what treatment I needed. I immediately tell my boyfriend related to this. And you guys know what his reaction is? He was very happy. And very grateful. Of course he is happy, this is his greatest wish. We also agreed that this Saturday we will go to the beauty clinic where the doctor works. Slowly but sure my disappointment also decreased. For some reason every thing that makes me sad, annoyed, and disappointed about him it can not last long. is this Love? Last, basically I am the kind of person who always carries everything with feelings and all tends to negative thoughts. And I always dramatize everything. My major acne area is my cheeks redish and cystic. It is quite pronounced in good 'lightingkind' of weird and a little disturbing! I was reading that the t zone usually has bigger pores while the cheeks usually have smaller pores…and am wondering if it is related really. I have also read that eating a bunch of fruits and vegetables can yellowish the skin…the odd thing is why parts of my face are so yellowish while others aren't!
