Izuku and Katsuki Hospital Comic - Thoughts and Process

I wanted to talk about the process and my thoughts while making this comic! Cause it was A Lot of planning and I feel like talking about how I went about it could maybe be helpful for other people who wanna make comics too ?

Also I just like talking and I've had So Many thoughts about it over the last few months, I just need to get them all out lol

Initial Thoughts

I started planning the comic in January, around the time the chapter with the second user's plan to transfer ofa to shigaraki came out. I remember feeling so anxious and sad seeing how devastated Deku was to lose the 'gift' that All Might had passed to him :'((

It made me start thinking about what it would be like to not only go from having all this insane power at your fingertips back to nothing, but also how it would feel to lose the vestiges, which had been his advisers, yapping in his ear and keeping him company for months. How it would feel to go from constantly having people looking over your shoulder back to silence.

Then I thought about what that would mean for his and Bakugou's relationship, which has developed so much over the series. How Bakugou would feel about Deku no longer having ofa, how the two of them would wrestle with old feelings now that Deku would be quirkless again. Bakugou having to face the kid he bullied and Deku going back to a state where the world saw him as "useless" with dreams too big for somebody without a quirk.

I feel like sometimes it's not really taken into account how Deku's past affects him in the present, and that goes for in the actual series as well. Considering he's the main character, it's funny that we never really get too much of a peak inside his mind lol, especially not recently, which is most likely intentional, but I digress.

What I really wanted to do for this comic was circle back to Deku's question to All Might at the start of the series, "can I become a hero without a quirk" because while yes, deku can be a hero, he had to get a quirk to do so. So what happens now that he no longer has it? After all of Bakugou and Deku's development, would Bakugou's opinion on deku pursuing his dreams while quirkless change?

I really didn't want that answer to be no. I didn't want to believe that Deku would have to give up and "be realistic" again, it just didn't feel right for that to be the answer after 400 chapters.

So I wanted to make something that would encapsulate those thoughts! And I felt like the best way to fully get that out was through a scene in the aftermath of the battle, the two of them in the hospital with nothing to do but talk about their feelings.

It was important to me that the doubts they both felt about the future were stomped out, and for there to be reassurance that things between them wouldn't snap back to how it was before UA. That Deku could still reach his dreams even if they did become harder to obtain.

I also felt like narratively it would be a good parallel if Bakugou were to lose something tied to his power too, and with his arm being so bad off in canon, I thought it made sense that there was a chance he could lose it forever.

So it's like they're both coming out of the final battle worse off with huge losses, but no matter what, they're going to fight to achieve their dreams, and they're going to do it side by side :')

At its core, it’s very self indulgent lmao, I didn’t think that we’d get something that sappy and gross in canon (😳) so I wanted to make something for myself :')

Planning

So then I made a first draft!

When I’m making bigger comics, thumbnails are super helpful! They help me see the full picture of what it could look like, and let me change things without putting in too much commitment. So most of the drawings are loose, but occasionally I’ll put in a little extra detail into things that I want to make sure are included in the final work.

There’s three main things I consider when thumbnailing for comics; expression, composition, and dialogue. Each of these things have a huge influence on each other, so keeping them all in mind when roughing out your drawings is important!

How it usually works is I play out the scene in my head like a movie and roughly come up with dialogue, then I draw characters and expressions based on that dialogue and the visions I had. Simultaneously I plan out approximately where those drawings will go/how much space they'll take up and finally, I add in the dialogue and move things around as needed so everything fits nice together.

Having the dialogue there in the draft lets me know around how big the speech bubbles are gonna be which is a massive help when figuring out paneling. It lets me plan around the bubbles and make sure nothing is too squished!

General tips:

Something I learnt from storyboarding is that establishing a setting for your scene at the start is really important! Most of my comics will start with a long shot or include one early on for this reason. It’s good for making sure readers aren’t confused on where everything is taking place!

Having a variety of shots is good for keeping your story engaging! This comic has a lot of closeups, but I tried to add variety where I could and used a lot of different angles to keep things entertaining even if there isn't that much going on

Final thoughts on this draft:

At this stage, the ending was really different from the final version I ended up with. It was a lot more focused on Bakugou's losses too and the vibe was kinda "well we're both nerfed now but that's chill we can still be heroes." I axed most of that cause I thought it was dumb and wasn’t really the conclusion I wanted lol

After the rough draft, I started sketching everything out and adding in panels based on the composition from the og thumbnails. I also changed the dialogue as I went, focusing on making it sound more natural and easy to read.

This is where the nuances in movement and expression became a bit more refined and speech bubbles where better planned out.

At this stage, establishing clarity and imagining how readers are going to move their eye along the page is really important. Comics are generally read left to right, but you can’t just assume people are going to automatically read it in the order you want, which is why panels and speech bubble locations are so important.

Tips:

A general rule is that along with going from left to right, speech bubbles should be in descending order. This can be broken a bit, but it’s important to remember that the rule is there in the first place for clarity's sake. So if you do plan on breaking it, make sure it's not at the sacrifice of legibility. The human eye is lazy and will jump to whatever seems most logical, so planning things out in a confusing manner is going to make your comic hard to read!

This is another thing I picked up from storyboarding, but keeping in mind the 180° rule is good for clarity as well! In the simplest of terms, if you have two characters in a scene, it’s good to keep character A on one side and character B on the other, and not switch those sides willy-nilly, otherwise it can get confusing. This isn't as important in comics as it is in film/television, but I still like keeping it in mind.

Final thoughts:

I hated the original ending but I couldn't exactly figure out how I wanted it to go, and I was too busy at that point to dedicate the time I needed towards it, so it stayed as these four panels for while :’)

During the period I stopped working on it, Deku lost his arms which had me panicking lmao, so much of the comic was devoted to his emotions and body language, specifically in his hands. I just went "am I gonna have to redo everything? Do I give him prosthetics?" and I was fully ready to rework the entire thing but Eri came in clutch for Deku (and me) <3

After Deku started getting hurt, I didn't really like the idea of him being discharged and sitting with a still injured Katsuki, and wanted it to be clear that they were both still in the hospital, so I had to axe poor Deku's "hospital gown" shirt for actual hospital garb </3

At some point during april-ish, I finally added in a new beginning and end, which took the comic from four pages to seven. I felt like the new parts added a lot more levity and humour which were needed, and I think it helped make Izuku and Katsuki feel closer than before.

For these pages, I skipped the thumbnail stage and jumped straight into full page stuff, which felt easier because they were kind of just add-ons.

Something I specifically liked were the first two panels in the last page. Fun fact, but a few days after I sketched those out, horikoshi released that art of to two of them smiling together and I went !! That's the vibe I wanted !! Me and Horikoshi are on the same wavelength! That was a good day lmao.

At this point, though, while new parts added a lot more to the story and brought it closer to the vibe I wanted, they also messed with the tone and overall pacing and it ended up feeling really off. Deku was now doing this weird 180 from being super sad and upset to then immediately joking around and goofing off with no acknowledgement of anything Katsuki was saying, which had been fine enough when it was just 4 panels, but very off-putting once I made the comic longer

...So I decided to add even more panels :')

I went back to my original ideas, and part of what I wanted to get across originally was the doubts about Izuku's future from here on out, and the worry that things would go back to how they were before he got ofa. I realized those initial things which had fueled the comic were no longer really part of it, and I wanted to change that.

When I thought up the idea of visuals surrounding their middle school selves, I felt so smart LMAO. I think it ended up being the thing that brought the entire comic together.

Izuku reverting back to that anxious, unconfident state, spiralling into himself, and mumbling out all his insecurities, including his fears about losing Katsuki's friendship (and yet still somehow more worried about Katsuki's feelings than his own). And in turn, Katsuki remembering and seeing Izuku as that kid again, and his own fears of becoming a bully once more.

It better explored what I wanted to originally get across and delved more into their feelings, so that the jokes and levity at the end felt like they were earned, rather than being a rapid shift in tone.

(The only other thing that changed was the some of the panels in the first page. I changed up the speech bubbles and got rid of a panel so it would be less cramped and easier to read.)

At this point, I was still having trouble figuring out how to tie everything in and segway pages 6-7 into the ending organically, so it sat like this for around a month.

Then chapter 423 released and the battle was over and I realized how little time I actually had to get the comic out. I knew that the next chapter could possibly make my entire comic obsolete, so I hauled ass :D

These were the final plans before I cleaned everything up! I changed around some of the panels to make the story flow better, I figured out how to tie everything in, and I finalized the dialogue!

At this point all the panelling was redone because I wanted more space in between them. Before, it felt really cramped and I think adding in more breathing room made it feel slightly less overwhelming for readers.

The biggest changes from the previous draft:

First, obviously, I finished the middle school stuff and figured out how to get from one part to the next. This was the hardest part of the planning, but I ended up deciding that Deku would spiral, Bakugou would kind of bring him out of that, they'd hug and then Bakugou would reassure him. I also included motifs relating to their childhood to be reminiscent of The Apology, and Katsuki's thoughts going back to them sharing the special All Might cards, them at the lake, etc. As if this was another healing moment for each part of them; their current selves, their MS selves, and their childhood selves too

I then changed some of the panels in the first page. I switched the direction of the diagonal line in the first few panels because I thought it made it more clear which way to start reading and made the comic flow better.

In the fourth page, I added a panel after Deku starts crying, because I felt like it worked better with the dialogue, and brought in more of Katsuki's POV into the story

The sixth page doesn't really look different, but there was a lot of resizing going on panel-wise. The bottom panel doesn't take up as much space and the panels up top are a little bigger

The final big change was the eighth page. I added in an extra panel and changed up a lot of expressions/dialogue so there was more of a natural transition between the heartfelt moments and the two goofing off

I then made some final changes and drawover notes before I started a week of cleanup and colouring!

Cleanup/Colouring Stage

Cleaning up my sketches usually just means duplicating the layer, putting the original layer at 5% opacity and.. cleaning it until it looks nice lol. It's the easiest way for me to work because I hate doing lineart.

This is what my sketch vs final usually looks like. The biggest change was adding in bandages into all the drawings lol.

For speech bubbles, I drew them all by hand, created a flat colour layer underneath in white, duplicated that and filled it in with black and shifted it with the transformation tool to make a drop shadow effect.

It took me two days to colour the whole thing :')

Usually when I colour, I work in a pretty painterly way, but I thought flats/cell shading would be a lot faster for this. I was right but it still took Very Long.

The smartest thing I did was put colour swatches of each colour I was using on a separate layer above everything else so I could easily use the eyedropper and get the right colour without having to reference them from another page. It was a big time saver!

I colour all on a single layer so I don't have progress photos to show, but for each drawing, I roughly added in all the colours in the approximate locations they'd be, and once I did that for every single panel, I went back and cleaned them up one by one.

And that's that! After colouring was done, I added my signature, posted it, and took the nap of the century.

Final, Final Thoughts

I worked... Very Hard to get the comic out before leaks night and even if it was just a few hours, I'm so glad I was able to do it cause when I saw the actual chapter I lost my mindddd

I feel like as the comic progressed, Katsuki's feelings took a backseat and if I was to redo it, I'd probably put a bit more emphasis on that than I did in the final version. I feel like his ~inner turmoil~ didn't fully come through the way I wanted it to. I didn't want it to be an immediate acceptance — I wanted the fact that he was struggling with his past to be evident too — but with the focus being so heavily on Izuku, Katsuki's inner thoughts get a bit lost which is too bad </3 Good thing is Horikoshi had the exact opposite idea as me, so it all worked out :D

I'm really proud of how the comic turned out, and I'm so happy to have gotten such a positive response to it! Thank you for reading if you got this far and thank you for reading my silly self-indulgent hospital comic :)

I don't suppose you can genetically graft me to a hypermasculine dad or maybe a hypermasculine brother so puberty could have dealt me a way different hand?

Huh. I’ll admit, I’ve never really done anything like that before. I mean, I’ve talked about changes that alter someone’s past in previous post, and I performed one myself using time travel (I fucking hate time travel), but what’s you’re asking is so much more intense. You want me to make it so that you grew up with a super manly dad or brother. You want me to make it so your genetics are different, your history is different, so that you’re basically an entirely different person. I’m not sure I’ve ever altered anyone that much before. But… I’m willing to give it a try.

You’re an only child right? And you never knew your dad? Raised only by your mom? Good, that will make this much easier. Now, I should warn you that we’re going to have to be very careful. We’re going to use an artifact that my Uncle left to me. I’ve mentioned him before. I really should tell you all about him one day. Anyways, what we’re using to change you might not look like much, but… it’s very powerful. We need to use it carefully.

Ok, I know what you’re thinking. It’s a little statue of a metal tree. Yes I know I sound crazy but in a world with time travel, an app that turns people into meatheads, and reflections that can swap places with the person they’re reflecting, I think you can give me the benefit of the doubt. The little statuette doesn’t look like much, but it’s one of the most dangerous magic items I own. It’s known as the Family Tree, and it allows the user to, well, alter their family tree. Literally. All you have to do is press your thumb to the wooden base, and the tree grows and changes until it resembles your own family tree, complete with pictures. Then it’s as simple as moving some things around, or adding a picture to the tree. So, let’s get to work.

You asked for a super manly dad, or a super manly brother. But since we’re already changing your family, why not give you both? First let’s change out your deadbeat dad for someone a little more… impressive. A real man, a man’s man, one so muscular and sexy that if he walked out on your mom you’d still thank him for the amazing genetics. But don’t worry, your new dad isn’t going to walk out like the old one. He stayed with your mom (who as it turns out is a real babe with the right man encouraging her), and raised you to be just like him. He taught you how to play sports, how to workout, how to shave your hairy face, even how to make a girl putty in your hands. You were always especially talented at that last one. As you’re giving him direction you start a little small talk. “So how training been going for you, building chemistry with your new teammates?” You asked. “Yeah, yeah it’s been going pretty good.” He said. “Bet it was easy since you have cama and tchouaméni to help you get used to it.” You look over at him. “Yeah that definitely made it easier I’ll say that.” He laughed.

When you got to the small ice cream shop you got out the car and walked with Kylian inside. You both walked up to the counter ordering what you wanted. Kylian payed for the both of you when you insisted. You walked with him out the shop and started walking down the street. You pointed out a few places like restaurants or little shops you liked.

Then a comfortable silence fell over the both of you. As you walked around Kylian looked down at you as you licked your ice cream. “You’re really beautiful in person.” He said not knowing how to word it. You smile and look up at him. “And I don’t mean like your pictures are bad or anything I just meant-“ he started to ramble but you stop him. “I know what you meant Kylian, don’t worry, but thank you, I can say that you look very handsome in person also.” You said returning the compliment.

Kylian lets out a small laugh of nervousness. You both finished your ice cream and walk back to his car. You started telling him where to go as he drives you home. “Thank you again, for you know showing me around.” He said softly. “No problem, I enjoyed it.” You give him a soft smile. “My building is right up there.” You said mentioning the apartment building that was coming up soon.

Kylian stops the car and looks at you. “Well thanks for tonight, really enjoyed it.” He said. “Yeah no problem, hope this isn’t the last time we see each other?” You said which was more of a question. “Yeah no I’d love to hang out again sometime.” He said with a nod. “Goodnight Kylian.” You said as you open the car door. “Goodnight y/n.” He said.

You got out his car and walked into your apartment building. Taking the elevator to the 8th floor. Once you got inside you apartment you made your way to your bedroom and change into pajamas before going on your phone making a instagram post.

After you made your Instagram post you went to bed as it was pretty late now. Your mind filled with the thoughts of tonight with Kylian. It was fun, walking around showing him different places, and eating ice cream. You’d hope you and Kylian would see each other again.

You woke up to your alarm, grabbing your phone and turning it off. You lay there in bed for a second slowly waking up. When you were awake you check your phone seeing you had a few text messages.

You fill out the paperwork and write a check for the $800 the little kitten was. Just as you finish the paperwork. The worker comes back with a crate that had the kitten inside. “Okay thank you, we will send you all his information and paperwork in the mail in 3-5 days.” They explain taking the clipboard.

It was now close to 2:30. You were cuddling with the little kitten. Right after you got him you went to the pet store to get a bunch of supplies and ordered some stuff online. You laid on the couch and the kitten was cuddled up on your chest.

You hear a knock at your door and gently place the kitten on the couch before going and opening the door. “Hey Kylian.” You said with a smile. “Just give me a second.” You said walking over to the couch and putting the kitten in the crate since you didn’t want it to be out while you’re gone.

You walk back over to the door. “Okay I’m ready.” You said closing the door behind you. “Okay then let’s go!” Kylian said walking to the elevator to go down to his car.

I think its bold of you to say your blog has no AI when your characters are basically rip offs of existing characters or real world people, or characters you took from another user. AI is awul for artists and needs to be separated from art and this blog is basically AI with how many rip off characters you have. You say you don’t write rpf or fanfic but over half your characters are basically rip offs of existing characters or real world people (youre going to tell me that Cassius and Calypso arent ripped off from Gravity Falls, Hemlock isnt stolen from Danny Phantom, Novak is basically a subtle rpf to that one nfl quarterback in florida, the list goes on). For starters, I didn’t even want to think about this message because you didn’t even have the guts to come off anonymous to tell me you felt that way. The only reason I’m answering this is because its actually insane you think this.

Let’s bust out the crayons for this lesson, shall we? 🖍️ i’ll explain this the way i explained a similar thing to some kids at the daycare i volunteered at in college.

🖍️ "Inspired by" means you see something you like, and you use it to come up with your own ideas. It’s like seeing a cool picture of a duck, and then drawing your own duck but making it look different, maybe with different colors or wings. You use the idea, but make it yours.

🖍️ "Copying" is when you take something someone else made and do the exact same thing without changing it or making it your own. It’s like tracing that duck picture and saying it’s yours, even though someone else made it first.

So, being inspired is using an idea to create something new, and copying is just making the same thing!

Let’s look at the characters you mentioned.

Cassius and Calypso are witches. Twins. This isn’t the first time witches have appeared in media, of course. After all, Harry Potter is incredibly popular. Let’s not forget Sabrina the Teenage Witch! Also! Twins are a real life biological phenomenon! I won’t lie, the relationship Cassius and Calypso has is drawn from Gravity Falls, but if you remember the creator of that show even came out and said they were based on him and his sister. How are they mine, you ask? Well… theyre under contract with their aunt and uncle, they perform regular shows showcasing their abilities, and the biggest thing in their lore is Calypso’s deal. Calypso made a deal with a demon who she knows nothing about and hardly knows anything about what she got into but she doesnt care. As long as her brother is safe. They have their own exclusive personalities too!

Was Hemlock based off Danny Phantom? Hell yeah he was. That show was a banger. Is Hemlock a copycat of Danny Phantom? Believe it or not even though he is half ghost and half human and can shift (as is Juniper!) at his will usually, he is NOT actually Danny Phantom. Hemlock is a transgender man, he is a student, he just got his abilities at twenty one. Did I take inspiration from the show? Sure. But is Hemlock also a classical musician, an occult student, a researcher, and a study driven academic with an ironic background in ghost hunting? Yep. And guess what? He also has a whole personality!!

Let’s look at Novak, because he is one of my favorite characters ever and he’s a lot of people’s favorite character. The quarterback you’re looking for is an amazing man, really. I volunteered with that team on an internship for one of my degrees during one of his seasons and he is one of the most genuine people I’ve met! (I went to a game in January, tickets were a Christmas gift, and he actually remembered me by name and I gave him a friendship bracelet like it was the eras tour and I’m pretty sure he wore it for a while). But is Novak a copycat of him? Let’s look. See, I don’t know him (that player you’re talking about) personally! But I can tell you Novak is a linebacker which is an entirely different position. Novak is also a single father who was SA’ed (because that happens to men too) in college. He was a foster kid who went through eight homes, six of which were abusive. He was a double major in college while being a once in a lifetime player for the college football team. He would do anything for his mom, his daughter, and his loved ones without a second thought. In fact we see more lore in his book but Novak has a hefty (six figures) fund for his daughter to go to college or buy a house or whatever she may need later in life. He regularly donates to his mom’s art gallery to make sure it stays running and local artists are supported to the highest possible level. Also, interestingly, that quarterback youre talking about is very Christian (very nice about it. But very christian) and Novak is actually agnostic! Novak also retired after a few years after he acquired a really bad concussion and started having seizures. As you say, ✨the list goes on✨

As for the AI thing, because what the absolute fuck… I never use AI to write my stories. I have used ChatGPT before, but I have used it as a means to get my thoughts organized in a prompt so I can write. Other that that, all me baby.

It's time for a brief break from the people to talk about The Elemental Four's home planet. Pictured above is my best recreation of the kingdom's flag (which is probably way too detailed to be a flag design, but like... whatevs!).

Macbeth was originally supposed to be called "Arcadia", but I didn't like that there was already a fictional place called Arcadia (Trollhunters moment! I used to love that show... which is how I found out about their Arcadia, lmaooo!), so I ended up changing it. Of course, I did end up eventually finding a planet named Macbeth while playing Starfox, but this time it made me happy instead of making me want to change it, I guess???

Macbeth was discovered and colonized by the wife of one of the first Elementals after they all got executed on accusations of witchcraft. The eldest of her children grew old enough to wield the Galaxy Scissors (which are just like the dimensional scissors from Star vs. The Forces of Evil, but they only let the user travel within their own dimension), and took their family, along with a group of humans who remained loyal to the Elementals, to a secluded planet across the galaxy. Yes, they named it after the Shakespearean play. No, I've never actually read it.

The kingdom of Macbeth is split into Old Macbeth and New Macbeth. Implied by the names, Old Macbeth is very old-fashioned and New Macbeth is very futuristic and technological.

Due to its roots in such an old age, and to avoid potential problems with Old Macbeth, the royal family of Macbeth is obligated to uphold the typical gender roles associated with princesses and queens. (This was one of the many reasons why Nevermore hated being a princess so much!)

While we're talking about the royal family, there's also a tradition for its members to be raised on Earth, only returning to Macbeth once the youngest Elemental being in that generation reaches 18 years of age.

The Macbethians worship their own Goddess, La Tierra Madre (“The Earth Mother”). She’s believed to have created the first generation of Elementals. Their names were Andrix, Nash, Alek, and Archer. Not that that was relevant. I just liked their names, lmaooo!

They also have a prophecy, called The Prophecy of Hell’s Elemental, that pretty much ended up making everyone hate Nevermore, but I’ll detail that in a later post…

The current queen of Macbeth is Amarilis, while Anya serves as the kingdom's sole princess. Aerith and Nevermore have no intentions of returning.

I saw this book on the bookshelf and saw Pink and Many Pages and thought Mine. this. book. is forever the world to me. one time I spilled hot chocolate on it and cried so hard. it’s basically about like. citizens from a dirty town searching for peace and happiness in the Land of Far Beyond. if you ever read this book and get to know me you will see pieces of it everywhere in my being. its motifs are floating everywhere in my poetry you’ll find its themes in every second centimetre of my body and when I am sad and have no place to go I go to one of the houses in the story. it’s. it’s perfect. I love the book forever. if someone asked me to explain who I am I’d probably just hand them this book

anne of green gables. but the picture book!. I think this was the beginning of my obsession with country life. first it was the “cottagecore” aesthetic and then I just started just fucking loving nature and trees and flowers and then it spread to cottages and gardens and stuff like that and now it’s just the whole of me. also I loved Anne sooooooo much. there was this one time in 3rd grade where we were learning about similes and metaphors and stuff and while everyone was writing stuff like “as blue as the sky” or “as green as the grass” I was writing shit like “as blue as the sorrow of a mother and daughter’s separation” or “as green as the gutting envy wrapping around each bone in your chest”. and I handed in those papers PROUD as fuck like I was thinking “damn. Katarina comes from a rich family and is a bit of a spoiled only child. After the death of her parents she became obsessed with the idea of legacy- that if people remember your name and your stories that you are never truly dead. With her inheritance money she could have gotten the best ship and the best crew money could buy- but that doesn’t make for a good story. So she started off with ship constructed by a fishman who got roped into being her first crew mate. Teume had no desire to be a first mate which worked out when they crash landed onto the island that Cecilia was on- taking her in as the next member. Altair came into the picture when the three of them quickly realized none of them knew how to properly read a map and some of that inheritance money went to bribing Altair, a seasoned navigator, to take a chance on their rag tag little group.

As for the Lore-Lore fruit- it is a paramecia type fruit that allows the user to bring a story they have written to life. Each story can only be used once and it’s power is directly correlated to how detailed and well written the story is. How long the story can stay going depends on the users stamina- the more complex and long one is the harder it is to keep going. The words also have to be physically written down so any damage to Katarina’s journal is a blow to her abilities.

When a story is activated she can channel characters and/or setting- calling allies to her aid and changing the battlefield. She has as much control over the characters as any author has- sure you can push them to do something but it has to be logically in character for them to do. Settings are a bit easier in general, calling forth terrain for defenses is typically Kat’s go to move in combat situations.

A Worms Armageddon Map Tutorial, by Neo

So since it’s been asked about and there are apparently many a picky detail that can cause custom maps in Worms Armageddon to not show up (and even then, they can be tricky to find), Neo has put together a tutorial on how to make them work.  I thus turn you over to our guest lecturer.

Hello there, Neo speaking, I'm the one that actually made the maps used in Roahm's videos, so I'll be the one guiding you to get your new map working for the game

I presume you have the map already made, but I have to assume all possible reasons as to why the map may not work, so forgive me for writing it down as a tutorial.

Now then, first up, making the map. I won't tell you how to make it, as I'm sure you can figure out the drawing/image editting process to do so, but I do need to address a few things about the maps.

1) Map size is important: the game allows for ludicrous sizes of .png images to be used for maps and although there is a min and a max for sizes you usually wouldn't run into problems here since the size isn't usually an issue. But there is a caveat: the pixel count on either horizontal or vertical axis must be divisible by 8. This means that if your map is, say, 803 pixels wide, it won't work, it needs to be a number divisible by 8.

2) Transparency: when working on a map, I recommend using transparency to figure out where your worms will be walking on, and if you're gonna have a lot of worms in one match (6 teams of 8 worms each, for example) you need a lot of space to work with, so the fields should be pretty open.

For instance, whatever falls into the checkered background (which indicates transparency) is something your worm will be able to walk, jump or jump rope across. Whatever is the solid color will be used as part of the ground or walls that make up your map.

As a result, be careful with stray pixels, as those can be an annoyance for players to find a sudden unseeable thing that impedes their progress. 

The alternative to transparency is having the background colored in pure black (RGB 0, 0, 0) and have the color black be a different shade of color (RGB 1, 1, 1) if you need it, but honestly that seems a bit too complicated, so I just let transparency do the work.

3) Anti-aliasing: Worms can't do anti-aliasing. In case you don't know, its how the outline of an object is smoothed out for the sake of the picture on a PNG. When the game runs anti-aliasing, its interpreted as a bunch of random stray pixels.

Make sure the outline of the map is jagged and pixelated before you load it up. 

4) Color: A reason of why the map may not load is that it has too much color, as Worms has an upper limit of how many different colors are on the palette This doesn't mean you need to count the pixels, just that you need to run it through an automatic filter. 

A program like Gimp will run your png through a color limiting filter automatically. 

just hit Image > Mode > Index... 

And just set the color palette to something similar to this, color max that Worms has is 112 colors. 

Assuming you save the map and its ready to use (or that you downloaded one from the net) then to load up the map you do the following.

This is the steps that I presume you've already done, but no harm in going over where to put them at. Basically, just go to where your folder files of Worms Armaggeddon are located, you can do so (assuming you're using steam) through the client itself or by following a similar URL to the one I have on my folder

Go to the User folder and inside of that you'll find "SavedLevels", that's where they should be in to be able to load in the game. Presuming that the criteria of color, transparency and size are met, anyway. 

To load up the map in-game, simply start up a match and this is the devious bit, the maps won't load on this drop down menu since these are the default ones to the game, they cannot be changed. 

Instead, left click on the map so that it auto-generates one at random and then right click it to bring up the custom map menus. 

Once you do, this menu will pop up, and in this dropdown menu you will find your custom map files. 

Bada-bing-bada-boom 

Just click exit and the game will be ready to go.

Just keep in mind: if you're making a custom map the requirements of color, size and transparency must be met, otherwise the map will not work.

I apologize for making it long winded, but this should more or less help guarantee you can use it.

Oh by the way, if you're playing online with friends only the host needs the map. Since its a png file the game can simply share it with every other player every time its loaded up. Voice packs and fanfares however need to be in every player's computer, but that's besides the point here

Purpose of this acc (plus a bit of an introduction)

Hello fellow reader or writer or poet or human, I’m Lux (that’s my pen name). I’m making this acc for a rlly cool idea I found on pinterest and that was to write a diary entry but rlly dramatized like the scene of a book. And to do that every day. So from now on I will use this app that I think was made to blog with these funny tags that make sentences to write my dramatized diary entries. They will probably be mostly fake, so dw if I write sm that sounds like an insane person wrote it, saying they see ghosts or smth. I will also write some random thoughts in here bc it’s fun and that way it feels more like a blog to me.

Now that you know what the inspiration was, why do I need a whole acc for it? Bc I JUST CANT WRITE A DIARY ENTRY EVERY SINGLE DAY. So I will use the internet to put some pressure on me. Thank you for being part of this.

from the other day, here’s a wip of some designs! I’m also trying to come up with a decent name to call this power/magic system. They’re most comparable to stands or personas, and they are based on mythological, classical, or fairytale characters. I just like the concept of visualizing someone’s personality this way. And they evolve like Pokémon LOL

depending on the emotional growth of the user, of course. For instance, Puck changes with our protagonist and becomes more complex… :P that kind of thing. More mentally ill infodumping + doodles below :3

And that design already suits the user Dia really well so I’m not keen to change it yet. For King Arthur I’ll probably just go with something simple like a disembodied Evil Skeleton Hand. mwahahaha

My gf came up with this funny telephone so it might appear in the final product 👀 sorry I drew a really gross spider guy at the bottom it looked cooler in my head

Thoughts on Episode 127 (S6 E14)

Corrupt commissions, unwavering Uraraka, and public panic. Let’s talk about it

As always, spoilers for the episode. Manga spoilers where I talk about the OP but the actual episode review is fine. I labeled them

The OP and ED (manga spoilers)

The mini break is over and we’re back with a new OP!

I’ll be honest, my hopes for this op were very low. I’m not a big fan of the upcoming arc (if you’ve been reading these little weeks reviews I’ve complained about it before lol) and I couldn’t imagine them doing anything that impressive given the arc mostly revolves around Deku

So when I saw the OP I was… honestly really torn

On the one hand, it’s very well made. The animation is really smooth, the glitching title is fun, the dark comic aesthetic is a gorgeous contrast to the fun comic vibe of the first cour, and I ADORE the sequence of little Tenko falling out of ShigarAFO and Deku reaching out to him

There were also TWO shots of Lady Nagant. I love her so much

Oh and the way the very first sequence was a reference to that panel from chapter 306! So cool!

However, this OP is very different and will definitely take some getting used to. It felt a little slow to me and I feel it doesn’t have as recognizable of a tune as the others. While this might be because I’m not familiar with it yet, I didn’t feel that with any of the other OPs. However, I will say that the song fits the vibe of the arc very well and it is a good, nice sounding song

While I liked the way class A featured (to an extent), I felt Uraraka had way too much screen time. This is coming from someone who likes Uraraka too. I know she has a big moment this arc but JEEZ it felt a little heavy handed. Was she actually THAT prominent in the arc? Maybe I blocked half that fight from my memory because I honestly don’t remember her doing much besides saying like one thing to Deku at Kamino and then the scene with the megaphone

I also feel like the visuals didn’t always go well with the song. Specifically the part where the title was glitching and just… kept being on screen. IMO it felt like it was there a little too long

I also found it a touch weird how much of this op focused on class A. The Class A confrontation is literally the end of the arc and yet it takes up the entire opening! What about the hospital epilogue? What about the other battles Deku fights (they put Nagant but the others?!) What about the OFA users? Despite being a Deku-heavy arc there were a bunch of things they could have snuck in, and I find it odd that they decided so much emphasis would go to the literal end of the arc

Then again, it’s not surprising at all because I saw the op that was shared between EA and MVA and yeah, someone at the studio likes giving the kids the spotlight

That being said, the inclusion of class A brings me hope that we may get some added scenes of the aftermath, which is personally what I’d like to see added. Specifically, I’d love to see what life at the UA shelter was like.

Based on this op, I have a feeling the season will end either with Deku being accepted back into the school OR (my personal guess) the Deku bath chapter. There was no sign of Star and Stripe, so it’s incredibly unlikely we will see her this season

As for the ED, we have a return to form with the running-Deku stuff lol. It’s not super creative, but it’s charming. I like the reminder of how far we’ve come

It’s also cool how all the background pictures are these iconic scenes but through Deku’s pov. Really neat twist on familiar imagery

Not much else to say. It’s cute but certainly nothing to gush over

Also, I highly doubt we will get any changes to the ed like we did last cour. It was awesome, but this one feels like a little concise story, and I can’t see them cutting into it and ruining that progression from past to future. I’d be pleasantly surprised if I was wrong though

As for the episode itself (no manga spoilers)

When I saw that the only promotional materials for this episode ONLY featured stuff from chapter 296, all sorts of alarm bells were blaring off in my mind

I was not looking forward to The Hellish Todoroki Family 2.0 (aka an episode that adapted 1 chapter and padded its runtime with flashbacks instead of literally anything else)

Anyways lol yeah guess what happened again

New rule: episodes must never have the word “hellish” in their titles because clearly that is the cause of all this /j

Very concerned about the fact that there’s a chapter called “the Hellish Todoroki Family 2” lol

Ok technically the Re-Destro scene comes from 298, whereas most of this chapter is 296, but my point still stands. You can’t look at this episode and call it the pinnacle of good pacing. For all intents and purposes, this episode adapted 1 chapter

That said, there were some good parts about this episode

I liked that they added a scene of Re-Destro explaining how the HPSC offered him a deal. In the manga it cuts straight to the aftermath and explains the context afterwards, so it’s nice to actually see it

I don’t know if it was just the subtitles though, but I didn’t like how he called Destro his father. Enough discussion has taken place that manga readers are fairly certain Destro is his ancestor, not direct father (since that would mess up the timeline), so now we get to deal with… whatever this brings up. Whatever. I’m choosing to ignore it

Despite not wanting a flashback, I liked the switch between how matter-of-factly Deku was explaining the report vs the hard cut to the chaotic aftermath. The switch in tone was really cool, and you really felt the panic in that moment

I also think they handled the flashback quite well with the narration. It’s the best way they could do a recap given the fact that most people wouldn’t want to watch it

I also LOVE how they added scenes in the aftermath. I loved seeing Uraraka running around every which way in a desperate attempt to help, only to catch sight of that one hero totally overwhelmed

We also got to see more reactions to Midnight, which was very nice. I’m glad they didn’t leave that as a silent panel

Oh and I loved how they added the fact that heroes denied the students being there. Absolutely fascinating. See, this is what I mean when I say I want to see them expand on what life was like after the war. If the rest of the season keeps this up, I’ll be quite happy

That said, I’m very curious why they felt the need to make this chapter its own episode. While there’s no clear “stopping point” for the season, I can’t wrap my head around why they’d decide to pace it like this since there’s plenty of plot coming up. Season 5’s excuse was (probably) to fit MVA into as few episode as possible and to therefore stretch the EA arc, but I have no idea what their goal is regarding this change. What are they trying to adjust for? Why are they stretching this? I’m curious if we will be able to see their logic by the end of the season (maybe they'll turn the entire villain hunt arc into only 5 episodes lol. Can't say I'd complain)

Like I said, I do hope they add some more scenes of aftermath going forwards, since I feel that was lacking in the manga. Again though, I can’t imagine adding a scene here and there would require an episode like this to make it work

Either way, the non-flashback stuff was adapted well. I look forward to next week!
