The Meaning of Life and the role of Emotions.
So I have been reading a book called The Reason of Things by A.C. Grayling. A.C. Explains that the best questions of all are how is one best to live? How shall one justify ones existence and make it worthwhile for oneself and others? How shall one make experience valuable, and keep growing and learning as one does so, by this means attaining a degree of understanding of oneself and the world? Some philosophers have said that the answer to this is art, love and the pursuit of knowledge. I personally think that some of the greatest philosophers out there are musicians. They have a heightened emotional awareness of life and provide melodies and lyrics that serve to express themselves but also console others who are going through a similar experience. I often find some philosophy difficult because some philosophy is on a more intellectual level that. I personally do not find very useful or helpful with my everyday life and film and music tend to provide a philosophical understanding of life that the general population can relate to. A.C. Grayling has a similar perspective on his series of books because it is a more relatable philosophy and a philosophy that people can use in their everyday lives to make them happier. He also mentions two of my most favourite philosophers; Plato and Soccrates. Such as when he talks about emotions and how a lot of philosophers have looked at emotions negatively because they believe that they interfere with rationality but he also refers to Plato’s way of thinking when he says that “Plato likened the thinking part of the soul to a charioteer driving two powerful horses, each representing an emotional aspect of the self: one is aspirational and tries to fly up to heaven, the other is appetitive and plunges wildly towards earth. Reason, the charioteer, struggles to bring them into harmony- and to make them fly upwards together.” He also explains about Stoicism premised the idea that the mastery of the emotions is fundamental to a virtuous life. People who live too much in their intellectual minds often suffer over stress, overworking and weariness which takes a toll on their emotions and because they have valued their intellect far more than their emotions, they lose control of their emotions. This is why my interest in philosophy is more about emotions, the meaning of life and the soul because without taking care of these aspects of our life, ordinary life starts to take a negative toll on our minds and emotions. This philosophical concept of taking care of our emotional state is explored in the song Relax, Take it Easy by Mika and in Doctor Who with the cyber-men. The concept of the cyber-men is that they are trying to achieve peace intellectually be containing human brains in metal armour whilst removing emotions, race and gender to create a uniform dystopia concept of peace which inevitably always fails since by removing humans from their humanity they lose their sense of morality and blindly try to take over the world. The cyber men tell the Doctor “You’re proof that human emotions destroy you.” But the Doctor replies. “Yeah….but I do like hope, hope is a good emotion.” Therefore with their rush to extreme intellectual conclusions to life they become enslaved to their own fears which inevitably leads to their destruction by hope. This is my way of philosophising that positivity is the real intelligence and that without a positive frame of mind we struggle with survival. I hope this first proper philosophical entry was enlightening for you. :) —Sarah-Josie.
