Market interaction of productive agents in Bangladesh has greatly changed the relative factor supplies, factor prices and the employment and unemployment of productive agents along with changes in ecological and environmental imbalance, material and spiritual welfare. These are reflected in social and political inequities, widespread corruption of the Government and non-government organizations, social conflict and political violence. These, in their turn, have been due to a historical emergence of low land-man ratio, high capital- labor ratio, a fall in the employment ratio and a rise in the dependency ratio, an adverse export-import ratio, tax-GNPratio, debt-GNPratio, and balance of payments position.

Budget deficit and its financing in Bangladesh, like in many other developing countries, is very important parameters for analyzing monetary and the fiscal effects on the countryě°Ë?€™s overall economic development. The government is indebted for debt servicing and deficit financing and the rate is rising swiftly. Taking debt from domestic sources is hindering private investments. Again, for external debt, foreign reserve is declining due to principal and interest payment. The dual effect is mainly responsible for devaluation of currency which in turn increases import bills and further induces debt to meet rising deficit.

International Financial Institutions (IFIs) that primarily loan funds to least developed countries have also committed to fight poverty through providing resources, knowledge and capacity building to achieve sustainable development results. Although IFIs are public taxpayer-funded institutions, they frequently fail to disclose project methods, content and other information that impact loan “beneficiaries”. Due to international and civil society pressure, IFIs have gradually adopted disclosure policies that aim to increase transparency and accountability of their operations; yet significant shortcomings remain, particularly in regards to gender.

This newsletter reports on the issues, news, struggles and life experiences of Asian women workers. “Women Workers at the Frontline of Sustainable Solutions” is the theme of this issue of the AWWN Newsletter and it sends two singular messages: • That women workers must be at the driving, and not receiving, end in a global economy shaken to its roots by deep recession; and • That solutions must be sustainable, taking root in people’s life and work, informed by a larger vision of the commons for the common good.

Oxfam commissioned this research to assess the contribution of different agricultural business models to poverty alleviation, livelihood security, climate resilience, and empowerment of women in the sesame sector in Metekel and Assosa in Benishangul Gumuz, Ethiopia.... Women are marginalized in sesame cultivation as they are excluded from the sales process and expected to manage household labor, thus facing a double work burden. Working as daily laborers on large-scale farms is particularly disadvantageous for women. The smallholder model is more suitable for women since it allows them to manage their double workload burden according to their needs.
